Huckabee to McCain: Debate Me
Little Rock, AR-
Mike Huckabee, campaigning in Ohio yesterday, formally asked GOP rival John McCain for a two-man debate.
In a letter sent to the McCain campaign, which is leading the Huckabee campaign by hundreds of delegates, Huck asked Mac for a Lincoln-Douglas type of debate, for the good of the Republican party.
“Now that the race for the Republican nomination is down to just the two of us, I believe this is the time for a real discussion about our vision for the future of this great country,” the letter states. “I encourage you to join me in a Lincoln Douglas style debate so that voters can better understand our views on critical issues.”
McCain, the presumptive nominee, had said earlier in the day that his campaign had never heard from Huckabee about a debate, despite the fact that Huckabee had been making the request publicly since Mitt Romney dropped out.
In a recent ARG TX poll, McCain is leading Huckabee only by a few points: McCain 45, Huckabee 41. Senior staffers tell FOX that while the ARG poll can differ wildly at times, the crowds for Huckabee have been considerably bigger than the crowds for McCain; a sign, they say, that Huckabee is gaining formidable ground in the Lone Star state.
Huckabee has said repeatedly that he will challenge McCain until the GOP convention in Minnesota, despite their good relations. A week ago, Huckabee defended McCain during the uproar over a New York Times article (largely rebuked) that linked him, improperly, to a Washington lobbyist.

Entire Huckabee Letter to McCain (SEE BELOW)
Dear Senator McCain:
It’s been my pleasure sharing the stage with you this past year, as we have worked to promote our ideas to lead this country. I have the deepest respect for you as a person, politician, and an American hero – and I appreciate the way you have run such an issue-based, positive campaign.
Now that the race for the Republican nomination is down to just the two of us, I believe this is the time for a real discussion about our vision for the future of this great country. I encourage you to join me in a Lincoln Douglas-style debate so that voters can better understand our views on critical issues such as health care, education, energy independence, terrorism and national security.
Our Democratic counterparts, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, have had recent opportunities to underscore the differences in their positions. It seems only fitting to me that Republican primary voters are offered the same.
I look forward to working with your staff to schedule this as soon as possible. I would suggest we set the debate before the March Fourth Primaries. It is my hope that one of the TV networks would offer to sponsor such an event.
Senator, let’s lead by example and get the ball rolling. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this idea and debating you in front of the American people
Sincerely,Mike Huckabee

They need to debate. It has been some time since the last one, and not much was discussed on the differences between Huckabee and McCain.
Great Idea!!! McCain can’t keep saying he never heard of the idea all the way until tuesday or it’s going to be really obvious that McCain knows that if people know and see more of Huckabee, he’s going to lose not only Texas, but the entire election to Huckabee. I doubt McCain is excited about the idea regardless if it’s the right thing to do not only because it will give more media attention to Huckabee, but also because being near Huckabee will even more accentuate the fact that McCain seems like a walking dead person- he has no charisma, let alone a stale stance on most issues. (Many people are only voting for him because they have been deceived into thinking he has this thing locked. He doesn’t!) Huckabee has charisma and a solid conservative stance on every issue- Texas is eating it up because this is the candidate conservative christians can back wholeheartedly on if not every issue, almost every one. Go Texas!! Hooooaahhhhh!
I am active duty serving overseas and even though there are barely any Americans here I ordered some
“Vote for Huckabee” signs for my yard(and tees, etc) just because I am so thoroughly excited and hoping for Mike Huckabee to become our next President. Would be a great follow on to President Bush, who was my greatest hero walking the earth until I found out about Gov. Huckabee. Now, President Bush is still at the top of my list and I voted for him and hoped for him to win because I was inspired by his talk of integrity and honor and I believe he has done a great job. I am even more inspired by Gov Huckabee because when I read where he stands on all of the issues and when I see him speak (www.mikehuckabee.com), I can’t help but say “RIGHT ON!”
BRING ON THE DEBATE!!!!!
I would sure love to see a debate between Huckabee and McCain, before this tuesday in Texas. In all the debates I have seen with Huckabee, he has come across as an individual who would make me very proud to be an American. There is undoubtedly no one running in this race who has more experience than Gov Huckabee to run a government.
Hope Matt doesn’t mind if I repost this tidbit of truth here (I’m thinking he won’t….) :

COMMON GOMEZ, YOU KNOW THAT GOVERNOR MIKE HUCKABEE IS NOT MATHEMATICALLY ELIMINATED!!!! HE WILL ONLY BE MATHEMATICALLY ELIMINATED IF JOHN MCCAIN HAS THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF SECURED DELEGATES PRIOR TO THE CONVENTION. HE DOES NOT HAVE IT YET AND MAY NOT. IF HE DOES NOT GET THE REQUIRED NUMBER THEN THE NOMINEE WILL BE DECIDED AT THE CONVENTION. HISTORICALLY IT HAS BEEN A TOSS UP AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THE FRONT RUNNER GETS THE NOMINATION AT A BROKERED CONVENTION. NOW IF Y0U WERE TO SAY THAT MIKE HUCKABEE HAS BEEN MATHEMATICALLY ELIMINATED FROM WINNING THE NUMBER OF DELEGATES NEEDED TO SECURE THE NOMINATION PRIOR TO THE CONVENTION, THEN YOU WOULD BE CORRECT, BUT HE DOES NOT NEED TO WIN OUTRIGHT! HE JUST NEEDS TO PREVENT JOHN MCCAIN FROM WINNING OUTRIGHT! WITH ALL THE RECENT NEGATIVE ARTICLES SUCH AS: http://www.usvetdsp.com/nov07/mccain_deceit.htm BEING WRITTEN ABOUT MCCAIN, MIKE HUCKABEE HAS BEEN CLOSING THE GAP IN THE POLLS. IN THE MOST RECENT TEXAS POLL HUCKABEE IS NOW ONLY DOWN BY 4%!!! A STATISTICAL TIE!! COMMON CONSERVATIVES DON’T SETTLE WHEN YOU CAN STILL HAVE A TRUE CONSERVATIVE IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!
OF COURSE YOU WON’T HEAR THIS ON FOX NEWS FOLKS. FOX NEWS IS DOING ALL THEY CAN FOR JOHN MCCAIN AND MAJOR MEDIA IS DOING THER PART BY CANCELLING ALL THE REMAINING DEBATES AND SAYING THINGS LIKE GOMEZ SAID IN THIS ARTICLE” “MATHEMATICALLY ELIMINATED”!
TEXAS FOR HUCKABEE IN 2008!!!!!
Republicans need to grab back some headlines from the Democrats. It certainly will not be helpful if all that appears on the front page for the next week is the Clinton/Obama contest.
A good debate on our side would help focus some attention away from the Democrats. If vast numbers turn out to vote for Obama in Texas and Ohio because that’s the more interesting contest, it doesn’t bode well for the general election.
Heidi B,
I certainly do not mind and appreciate you reposting it!!!
Mike Huckabee, against all odds will win Texas! Just like the New York Giants won the Super Bowl! None of the media “experts” gave then a chance. They were wrong then and they’re wrong again!!!
There was originally a debate planned for Feb 28th. I assumed it was going to occur as long as Huckabee was still in by then. I guess not?
Its a good idea as it will give both of them an opportunity to counter many of claims the Democrats that have been made in the two debates they had recently.
Especially in regards to Iraq.
Senator McCain,
For the good of the Republican Party, have a debate!! A debate would be an opportunity to counteract all free press the Democrats are getting right now with their debates. It would also be an opportunity to counteract some of the negative attacks made against Senator McCain in the press recently.
Come on Senator, have a debate, for the good of the party!!!
Huckabee is beginning to annoy me.

It is possible that ignoring Mr. Huckabee’s request for a debate will allow Mr. McCain to slide into the Republican nomination. It is not possible, however, for Mr. McCain to win in November with a large portion of the Republican party estranged from him, at worst, or not energized at best. Mr. McCain’s avoidance tactic, though probably clever in the short run will be a disaster for him in the long run. For someone like me, an evangelical conservative, it will be difficult to even show up at the ballot box much much less vote for someone who has ignored my desires for attention to my interests.
Joel Persson
Alert,
Thanks for the encouragement!!!!
GO GOVERNOR HUCKABEE, WIN TEXAS!!!
Ya’ll want a debate or another staged TV appearance?
How about a true debate in the Lincoln-Douglas vein, without moderation?
The democrats have dominated the news.
The republicans need to get in front of the American people and present a contrasting case. The idea that the GOP race is over is non-sense. If it were, then the elections should be cancelled and everyone go home. It is the McCain campaign and the overwhelming support from the media that continue to push this illusion.
McCain and Huckabee should debate, and this should be nationally televised. You have heard “We Report, You Decide”…. Wouldn’t it be nice if that actually occurred and the American people could decide?
?
In our circles, we think the fairtax should be more appropriately named, the “used car salesmen employment protection act”.
You see, the fairtax will not be imposed on “used” goods. People will be flocking to our lots to avoid paying that nasty 30% national sales tax on a new car.
We know the fairtax will shut down detroit and severely reduce the production of new cars. I smell big bucks!
Go Huckabee!
When have McCain and Huckabee ever debated. They pat each other on the back and never discuss issues. I think Huckabee wants more free airtime to help his speaking career. Politically he has nothing to gain.
Please, a McCain/Huckabee debate….I’m so tired of watching Obama and Hillary! We need the republicans to get some air time.
Why shouldn’t Sen. McCain debate Gov. Huckabee? Isn’t the purpose of a debate to allow the citizens of this country to see how the candidates differ and choose which one they would like to support? This is a good thing for the Republican Party. I think McCain could actually loose support if he isn’t willing to debate Huckabee.
Huck really has a flair for the dramatic. Lets see, its been 3 weeks since super tuesday, less than one week before the 3/4 primary and now I am “formally” asking for a debate?
McCain, this is a mugging waiting to happen.
On the other hand though, Huck really misses his friend McCain. Maybe Huck just wants a hug on national tv.
please PLEASE PLEASE LET THEM DEBATE===I MISS HUCKABEE==HILLARY AND OBAMA ARE SO BORING===HUCKABEE IS BY FAR THE MOST QUALIFIED FOR PRESIDENT==WE RE WAITING ON A MIRACLE
One more thing.
We are working on a bumper sticker “used car salesmen for Huckster, ’cause he’s one of us”
Hey Alert, if you read Huck’s request on his site, he does ask for a Lincoln-Douglas style debate….
“Judge Douglas is of world-wide renown. All the anxious politicians of his party . . . have been looking upon him as certainly . . . to be President of the United States. They have seen in his round, jolly, fruitful face post-offices, land offices, marshalships, and cabinet appointments, charge-ships, and foreign missions bursting and spreading out in wonder exuberance, ready to be laid hold of by their greedy hands. And as they have been gazing upon this attactive picture so long they cannot bring themseles to give up the charming hope but with greedier anxiety they rush about him, sustain him and give him marches, triumphal entries and receptions, beyond what in the days of his highest prosperity they could have brought about in his favor. On the contrary, nobody ever expected me to be President. In my poor, lean, lank face nobody ever saw that any cabbages were sprouting.” (Abraham Lincoln)
I would LOVE to see a FAIR debate!
Tell me about yourself, Vanilla Ice. Who pays your salary to blog all day? FOX?
huckabee reminds me of my flu i had last week. I had felt really bad for several days. Then I began to feel better for a season( half day). Then my fever and the chills returned. this cycle continued for a week. It was similar a never ending nightmare.
Go ahead debate. It will do him no good. WHy? They are bff! Alll they do is kiss eachothers but. We all know that.
If there is a slight chance that huck(finally!) desires ti challange mccains record. It is wayyyyyyyy too late! I think after texas and ohio, he is toast. Even if huck wins texas, mccain will still gain Many delegates.
reguardless he has the right to stay in.
Ike, Huck wants to win. All this speculation on his ulterior motives is incorrect. He runs on conviction, principle, and is running due to his strong grass roots support. He is doing it for us. This is our chance to actually get a candidate in from outside the Republican elite circles. Don’t jump on the McChicken bandwagon, vote your conscience. Huck does have a chance and it can only happen if we give him that chance.

Michigan - are you saying Huckabee is our next Lincoln?
Grandma - I’m independently wealthy. I know that makes me an evil person to the Huck supporters. Sorry for living the american dream.
“Used Car Salesman” , you are half right about that. It will also save us money on new vehicles, since all the hidden federal taxes included in the cost of buying a car are eliminated and thereby decreasing the cost of the car. Then it is taxed 23% sales tax. When all is said in done, you end up spending less on a new car as well with your ENTIRE paycheck. Go look up the Fair Tax on-line and get the whole story.

http://www.mikehuckabee.com
I’ best friends with my wife and we can still debate..trust me…it’s healthy. It’s good for the Republican party as well, no matter the outcome. It will sharpen and strengthen the candidate who emerges. Plus it gives us national exposure. Why should the Dems control the headlines? Huck is doing everyone a favor by staying in. Hopefully though he will come out on top. He is by far the best candidate we’ve had in years.
Chris - you are assuming all companies make money and pay income tax. If I’m not making money, I can’t lower my price.
What about all the foreign companies? They still have to pay tax in their home countries. They will not have any incentive to lower prices. Have you really researched the impact of the fairtax?
We are still for Huckabee and in 10 years when everyone is driving used cars, we will gladly join the chorus “thanks mike”.
Thought Huckabee dropped out . Wht won’t Bill Cunningham vote for Huck in the Ohio primary ? What is Huckabee’s middle name ?
Vanilla Ice, originally there were debates scheduled in Ohio for the GOP but the OHIO GOP backed out when they decided for you that McCain is who we should back. Huck has responded to thousands of supporters who wanted him to challenge Mac and get him to publicly accept or reject an invitation. We have been petitioning Mac, the Ohio GOP, and the major news networks to get it done. It’s NOT that he was just sitting around until now. Get your facts together before getting on here spewing your ignorance.
Go to http://www.fairtax.org for the long answer.
Mike Debateking Huckabee, I believe is his full name.
Chris, I don’t think I am being ignorant. The news article says Huck sent McCain a letter asking for a formal debate. My point is why didn’t Huck send the letter 2 weeks ago? Its like Huck wakes up every morning and says “wow” look at how many more people are supporting me today, I guess I better do this or do that.
Is Huck somehow more serious today than he was three weeks ago? Thats a crock. The Romney exit turned Hucks campaign upside down and they are barely getting back on their feet and trying to figure out how to campaign against their friend, McCain.
He did it now becasue McCain said he never heard that Huck wanted to debate and that he should give a formal request…so he did.
My simple question does not need a long answer. If my business is not making money now and I am not paying income tax, how can I lower my prices? How the hell is my business supposed to survive long enough to weather an economic downturn?
Advertising
Great idea. I am sick of hearing about the democrats. McCain is not getting any publicity, except for negative items with that bozo’s remarks in Ohio. Senator McCain, the ball is in your court. Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and the rest of the states with an upcoming primary want to see a debate.
Heidi, spend more money so I can lower my prices. Genius
Ice: I hope this is your prove that Huck is confrunting McCain.
To Ike and Dean: No doubt you will be here shorly. I just wanted to apologize, I was wrong about Mitts’ deficit. I got mixed up about whether he cut spenting(which according to some sourses he didn’t) of the deficit. He did leave Mass with a surplus. I hope we can put yesterday behind us and debate some more.
The used car lot purchases a used good from a person and sells it (still a used good) to someone else. There is no FairTax on either transaction.
Vanilla Ice,
Well, if you are independently wealthy, you should be donating your time to something other than bashing the presidential candidates on the blogs. How sad!
By the way, I knew Romney’s father “George.” Honorable man. Unfortunately, I can’t say Mitt’s politics are the same as dad’s.
Customers are buying the used goods, not the service of making the goods available for sale.
Vanilla Ice, it’s more like Huck woke up this morning and said
“okay, Mac wants to play “dumb” and pretend the debate is no longer needed that we already had scheduled and use “oh, he never asked me” as an excuse to get out of it. Well, I guess I better ask him then just so everyone is clear either way that IT WAS ASKED FOR, not just mentioned or “suggested”. Let’s see what he says now.”
I don’t think Huck is surprised at how many people want him to be President. He is the one, afterall, who DOES believe in miracles. That’s part of why we love him so.
Blessings!
With the FairTax you are only taxed once on any good or service. If you choose to buy used goods − used car, used home, used appliances − you do not pay the FairTax. If, as a business owner or farmer, you buy something for strictly business purposes (not for personal consumption), you pay no consumption tax. The FairTax is charged just as state sales taxes are today. When you decide what to buy and how much to spend, you see exactly how much you are contributing to the government with each purchase.
McCain and Huckabee should debate . Does McCain stand for more than War, slack immigration and gay rights? sign the petition at http://www.mustdebate.com
Are you REALLY a used car salesman?
Used car man- why don’t you ask Vanilla Ice, he’s “independently wealthy” and sarcastically apologetic for living the “American Dream”
Don’t hate on the Huck just because you serve the buck! : )-
The fairtax is going to shut us down. Under the current system when a new car is purchased, it may lose a grand of value when it drives off the parking lot.
Under the fairtax system, the loss of value will be substantially increased upon the new car leaving the parking lot. Lets see I can buy a new 2008 for $20,000 plus 23% sales tax or a used 2007 and pay no sales tax. The car is only worth what is worth, the sales tax paid does not increase its true value.
It is unfair that the used car lots do not have to collect tax on their sales, but we do.
You new car dealerships always inflate your prices anyway. This system keep you guys honest. I hope you do go in the red, but it won’t be because of the Fair Tax.
http://www.fairtax.org
As a Huckabee supporter, I can only imagine how scared the Sen. McCain supporters are. We all have heard Gov. Huckabee debate and know what the outcome would be. I have heard reporters say over and over again, “Sen. McCain has nothing to win by debating only to loose support.” This would be the only reason McCain would not debate…because he would loose. Didn’t I hear earlier in the week that Sen. McCain was quoted as saying he would loose the election in Nov. if he can’t get Americans to go along with the Iraq war?
Even he knows he can’t win in Nov. His only stance is “I know how to go to war”. America is much more than just a war!
RANDY
McCAIN SHOULD BE AFRAID OF A DEBATE WITH MIKE
GO HUCHABEE
As a Centralist that leans right the GOP is in bad shape . I’ll hold my nose and vote for McCain , although it looks like Obama is going to win . The center is moving to the left .
This is what troubles me about the Huck supporters. They can’t talk about their man without the religious reference of miracles, blessings etc. You treat him like Moses leading the children of Israel out of egypt. Its a little over the top on the religious zeal for me.
Why does Huckabee’s faith not give medical treatment to children ?
Chris, nice try avoiding the issue and calling on stereotypes while being happy about our demise.
We question your intellect when you assume a 23% sales tax will not affect our business.
Chris Taylor writes….
He runs on conviction, principle, and is running due to his strong grass roots support. He is doing it for us. <<<
Look, I like Huckabee too. He’s seems like a very fine guy, he’s funny, etc. But let’s not delude ourselves about his motives. On March 4th it is very likely that McCain will reach 1191 and at that point Huckabee will drop because he will no longer be able to effectively fundraise. At that point he can withdraw from the race and legally he can transfer all remaining campaign funds straight into his personal bank account. Personally I don’t have a problem with it. Rake it in with both hands, Huck. But we really need to be honest about why he is still in it.
Some of the comments here are so ridiculous that they’re funny. McCain and Huckabee have never debated because Huckabee (or Paul for that matter) hardly got a chance to speak at a debate. Just think about it: they have laughed at MH in the beginning, was dismissed as a fluke when he won Iowa, was told that a vote for him was a vote for McCain (utterly untrue, by they way), and now is probably getting under the skin of those elite GOP people because he is not handing the nomination to McCain as many of the other candidates have done. He is the only one who has stuck with what he said he was doing from the beginning: running for president. Now, if they were allowed to debate, we would actually hear some differences. As far as voters looking to him as Moses leading them out, that is utterly ridiculous—that seems to be the Obama crowd. If MH were allowed to speak, many non-religious people (many of whom have blogged as supporters on his website) would vote for him because of his stance on the fair tax, among other issues. Huckabee is the only chance the Republicans of winning in November. He is the only one who can hang with or beat Obama in a debate and he wins the base of the party along with youth voters. GOP needs to wake up.
Vanilla, most of Huck’s supporters are Christians who believe God is in control, as I do. However, even if you aren’t as zealous, there are plenty of reasons to support Mike. You don’t have to share our faith or zeal, but you can share the values that come with it. What true conservative doesn’t want a Fair Tax system and lower taxes? Or an end to abortion? Or marriage defined as between a man and a woman? Less government? Secure borders? Look at the issues and you’ll be with him whether you are of faith or not. Faith is what drives him and most of his supporters.
http://www.mikehuckabee.com
What Bible does Huckabee use ? I am a born again Christian and will only use the KJV of the Bible . This does make a difference to me because I need to know what version Huckabee will change America towards .
Question my intellect if you must. It doesn’t hurt my feelings. Apparently I hurt yours, but the truth does hurt sometimes. I’m not avoiding the issue, if you want me to help you understand the Fair Tax, I will. I gave Used Car Salesman some nuggets of info, I would be happy to help you out too.
http://www.fairtax.org
Vanilla : not all of Huck supporter are Christians. Whats wrong in believing in miracles, it just difference in religion or opinion. And whats wrong with Christians supporting him(you act like it a problem). That like saying I should not support Mitt because the Mormons support him. There is nothing wrong with it.
You’re a funny guy Scott. Are you a leftover from the Romney campaign?
I agree with many of you on this comment site that a debate is a good thing not just for the candidates but for the party. All anyone hears on the news is about Obama, Obama, Obama. Some Hillary, only negative on McCain, and NOTHING almost zippo on Huckabee. A debate would put before the country the REPUBLICAN ISSUES that are being squeleged by the media. I think it makes McCain look unsure of himself if he doesn’t debate. We need this!
All of the previous republican debates have had too many candidates to allow for much substance and detail. A one-on-one debate between McCain and Huckabee would give all of us the opportunity to hear more detail from each candidate, and would prevent the appearance of a “coronation.” Please, Mr. McCain, accept this challenge. It will do the party good to see that you are not afraid of competition and it will help to put the republicans back in the spotlight as a party that is not afraid to continue exploring issues and allowing all voters voices to be heard before a nominee is officially chosen.
Wait I get it, Used Car Salesman disappeared right when new Car Dealership arrived. Are you the same person, different arguement? I like it…..slick…..
***ADS4Huck*** hey , I have been saying it for months and now it is to late . A vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain is a vote for Obama . Now we will get what we deserve . As a born again at ” evangelicalsformitt ” it hurts to think about the hate and lies that goes on .
Chris, maybe your intellect is picking up……. You feel like you’ve been taken by a Huckster selling his wares!
Is this guy an idiot or what! What an ego he has. He’s an embarassment to the Republican Party.
McChicken is too afraid to debate Huckabee, because the more people in Texas find out about Huckabee, the higher his poll numbers go. Polls in Texas show that Huckabee is only 2% behind McCain (statistical tie) and regardless of what the media is saying, McCain is only a shoe in if Huckabee drops out. If Huckabee keeps fighting on behalf of true conservative Republicans, this could go all the way to the Republican Convention and the Delegates would decide who is the better representative of the Republican Party. In a side by side comparison people will see that McCain is nothing more than a Democrat with an “R” behind his name.
Huckabee is only in the race because he is gearing to be the next Falwell or the next Robertson. He is starting to really get on my nerves! I will not vote for him in Texas. I will not vote for McCain, either!
***McCain*** 2MAR08 , my friends , I believe that Mike would like to have a meet to talk about a debate . Both of us are getting together to talk about this as soon as I wrap this thing up .
A debate would be a great idea at this point in time. Although McCain pretty much has this locked up, eventhough I like Huckabee very much, what a debate would do is show the contrast of a Republican party and the abundance of intelligence over and above that of the two remaining Dumbocrats and the circus environment which the two Dumbocratic candidates have created between themselves on National television. What we have seen with these two Dummy Democrats from last night is a lack of knowledge, a lack of sophistication and the lack of maturity and it has shown that they have no clue about running a country of over 300 million people; however, if McCain and Huckabee were to put together for one more debate in front of a National audience then this would do nothing less than draw some fence sitting Democrats over to the Republican side which is needed. Its not too late to convert to the intelligent side for some fence sitters. Further, if there was another debate it would be highly recommended to keep Ron Paul out of it. Not that he doesn’t have a few good things to say, however, his participation would be a waste of time and it would merely draw the focus off of the mainstream ideas for the Republican Party.
