McCain declares cease-fire in war with NY Times

Indianapolis, IN — One day after his campaign led a full frontal assault on the New York Times, Sen. John McCain said Friday that he is “moving on” and will no longer answer questions about his relationship with a Washington lobbyist.

“I don’t have any more comment about this issue. I had a press conference yesterday morning and I answered every question,” McCain said at a press conference following a town hall meeting in the Hoosier State. “I am moving on. I am talking about the issues and challenges of America and the big issues that Americans are concerned about. I addressed the issue. I addressed every question that was addressed to me. And I do not intend to discuss it further.”

Despite the fact that his campaign aggressively deployed surrogates Thursday who attacked the Times and sent an fundraising e-mail to supporters rebuking the paper as part of the “liberal attack machine,” McCain said his campaign is essentially declaring a cease fire.

“My campaign is not doing that anymore,” McCain said. “The fact is I won’t discuss (the issue) any more.”

McCain also confronted further ethics concerns that a number of his senior campaign advisers previously worked as lobbyists.

“The right to represent interests or groups of Americans is a constitutional right…I am proud of the record of many of my advisers,” he said. “These people have honorable records, they’re honorable people and I am proud to have them as part of my team.”

The Arizona Senator found support among attendees and surrogates at his town hall meeting.

During the question and answer session, a Vietnam veteran seated in the audience took a moment to defend the presumptive GOP nominee. “When I see attacks upon your character, I am infuriated because you have the core values to be a great President and I thank you,” the veteran added.

Additionally, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels urged the more than 300 town hall attendees to buy the Senator’s book while introducing McCain. He noted that, “after you have canceled your New York Times subscription, you will have money leftover.”

McCain represent everything that is wrong with politics. As an independent, I was a supporter in 2000. But his straight-talking express is now the jive-talking express. I am voting Democratic for now on.

This guy is lying! His wife now is a product of infidelity so what makes him a changed guy? Besides, the ny times are not as interested in his sexual escapades as much as showing his relationships with lobbyist. And that is what Barack is promising americans that he will not allow them to run america and its policies any longer. But Fox is such a terrible news station, instead of caring about the plight of america you would rather see this mancherion candidate get into office. The lesser of 2 evils my ass! He is more evil than satan himself. Why? Because this crackpot has flashbacks of his pow days and wants revenge. I gaurantee you he will start a war with Vietnam, WATCH WHAT I TELL YOU!

I am afraid this will hurt him in November. Republicans, we still have a choice…Mike Huckabee. He has the most executive experience of anyone running.

There is a choice in the Texas GOP primary..Mike Huckabee. Don’t let other states or the media decide for you. I encourage you to vote for the things that are important to you. If you believe in the things below, there is a choice:

Secure Borders – Mike Huckabee has a 9 point plan to secure our borders that DOES NOT involve amnesty like others. Also, he has set a date to have the Southern Border fence complete by July ‘10.

Pro Life – If you believe the ALL life is important and not only want to overturn Roe vs. Wader, but to have a constitutional amendment that will prevent states from deciding this issue. Mike Huckabee is the only one who wants to pass a Human Life Amendment that will protect life.

Tax Reform – Mike Huckabee wants to eliminate the federal income and payroll taxes and pass the Fair Tax, a national sales tax at the point of consumption. Our current system penalizes people for working harder and being more successful. Also, Fair Tax would make American goods 12-25% more competitive by eliminating corporate taxes, compliance taxes, etc. We could bring jobs back to US soil. It just makes sense.

Energy Independence - We are financing the terrorists with our middle eastern oil habits and it does not make sense. Mike has a plan to be energy independent

Hey Johnny, are you moving on from thr Newsweek article too?

The Times did not present enough factual information for anyone to know for sure, so most of the responses are opinion.

Now, lets apply some facts. If The Times is making a false statement, this would give McCain a legitimate deformation lawsuit.

Facts:
1. Why isn’t McCain filing suit for The Times to prove their statement.
2. NY Times gave just enough, If McCain legally challenge the statement, the detail will then follow.
3. If you were accused of such, would you just say it’s not true and not make them prove it? Yes if you know it’s true.

The Times story backfired on them. Just more left hints and innuendos. No facts, just gossip and smears to republicans. To be expected from the limosine liberals.
Every one has there minds made up by now any way. At least those who have minds of their own and don’t believe campaign rhytoric and media hype.
Dems are running on one leg of the stool and that is America sucks. Blame America first, gloom and doom. They create chaos for votes. There will always be civil rights turmoil as long as they need the black vote. Dey been used, over and over again. Broken promises and then used again in the next election.
If you think they will bring the troops home now you’re nuts. Listen to the words. “Will start bringing them home when its safe”. Both have admitted they didn’t exect them to all be back before the end of their first terms. Some yes. some people just hear what they want to.
I remember the dems running for congress saying they would end the war. Didn’t happen did it.
Could it be that the enemy doesn’t want to quit? They’ll come home when its done who ever is president. We’ve always been in a war some place or the other.
having a plan and doing it is 2 different things. “The best laid plans of mice and Men”. Shakespear.

Facts….McCains lawyer, Bob Bennett answered your questions last night. You would have to prove intent to harm as you are a public figure. It would distract from the campaign. It is up to Them to prove it.
The general consenses is the Times story backfired on them. They have an agenda and it isn’t hard to figure out what it is.

I always thought the front page of the NY Times was reserved for important news stories of the day. I also always thought duedilligence and fact checking were required prior to publishing any news story much less one of such significance. If my name was Bill Keller, I’d be deeply concerned about my job right now. His decision making process obviously is not well enough developed to hold this important editorial position. If he did not envision the second and third order effects that are currently playing out due to this reckless and incoherent collection of innuendo being published, he should seek employment in a less mentally taxing line of work. His decision (for whatever reason known only to him) has made the NY Times look like a bad high school newspaper’s gossip column. If this story is true, it’s important and people need to know the facts. The only problem is we’ll never know whether it is or isn’t true because the Times has become THE story instead of reporting it.

ROFLMAO! If I were McCains age and the paper printed that about me I would frame the article then hang it up right above my La-Z-Boy recliner and point it out to everyone who entered my home.

I will be glad when nut-case McCain loses to Obama. McCain would continue to fight a war with a half ass effort to keep congress happy- just as Bush has done. There is a good chance he will start a war with Iran and others like Syria could join forces against us. BTW don’t think China and Russia aren’t watching. They know we have our necks out right now and there are many parts of the world that are easy pickings for them. Nut case McCain has tunnel vision and wants to continue Bush’s policies that have failed our country.

Why does the Media continue to report on nonissues? Who cares about all the so called headlines? Why are not they talking about the war, the economey? The Future of this country?

I will tell you why. None of the front runners have workable solutions and they want voters to focus on silly crap that does not matter.
