FOX Embeds: Follow the ELV

The Across America Tour, Day Eleven: Stanley, NM

By Lee Ross

Our final stop of the night took us a spot were there is more talk of ponies than politics. Here in Stanley, New Mexico the action is at the Rocking Horse Ranch Arena where cowboys from all around are working on their roping skills before the start of rodeo season in the spring. We met Jim Shiver who is a more-seasoned cowboy who explained how he’s going to vote for John McCain and how he thinks the Arizona senator’s experience is what is needed most at this time. Speaking of Arizona….that’s where we are off to tomorrow.

You’re approaching Gallup, NM. I hope you’ll stop and get the Navajo perspective on the election from a couple of the locals there. It’s a unique opportunity - you’ll actually be only about 1/2 hour from the capitol of the Navajo Nation in Window Rock. Go interview their President!

Johnathon,

I stopped by to look at the ELV when it was here in Peoria, IL. From what I was able to see, here is what I gathered… I can’t be sure on any of this, but this is what I saw:

I am not sure what in-motion satellite system they use, but I believe it may be a BGAN satellite, using satellite phone/IP technology to get a connection to the internet.

The encoder/decoder system is from Streambox. It is both hardward and a codec. It translates the video and audio into a small IP stream and is sent to the in-motion satellite system.

There is a roofcam that has pan/tilt/zoom. It also has a lipstick camera for Phil Keating in the front seat.

For the third camera that is taken outside of the vehicle, I believe they are using a wireless system from RF Central. Once again, from what I could tell, it wireless does the camera video, wireless mic, and wireless IFB for Phil. They can walk within a certain radius of the vehicle.

Hope that helps. And hopefully someone w/ the ELV can come on here to correct me!

Brian
