Camp Mitt says goodbye

In an email titled, “Defeating the Democrats,” Romney for President Campaign Manager Beth Myers sent a goodbye note to supporters Friday informing them of Mitt Romney’s decision to endorse Sen. John McCain, and asking them to the same.

“It is time for our party to come together by standing behind Senator John McCain for President in order to keep our country prosperous and strong,” Myers wrote. “The Governor and his family thought long and hard about this decision and feel that it is best for the Republican Party to bring the country together and unit behind one candidate. We need to provide our party with the best opportunity to defeat the Democrats in November.”

Dear ##,

Thank you for your strong support and dedication to Governor Romney and the campaign. We had such great success in so many states because of all your hard work and the efforts of your team of volunteers. As you may have heard, yesterday Governor Romney endorsed Senator John McCain for President of the United States. The Governor and his family thought long and hard about this decision and feel that it is best for the Republican Party to bring the country together and unit behind one candidate. We need to provide our party with the best opportunity to defeat the Democrats in November.

Below are Governor Romney’s remarks from his press conference with Senator John McCain:

Thank you all very much. And thank you all for joining us on such short notice.

This isn’t my first joint appearance with Senator John McCain, but it promises to be one of our more pleasant exchanges.

I am honored today to give my full support to Senator McCain’s candidacy for President of the United States. Today I am asking my delegates to vote for Senator McCain.

As you all saw over the past year, things can get rough in a political campaign. And in the thick of the fight it’s easy to lose sight of your opponent’s finer qualities. But in the case of Senator John McCain, I could never quite do that. Even when the contest was close and our disagreements were debated, the caliber of the man was apparent.

This is a man capable of leading our country at a dangerous hour. Senator McCain understands the war we are in – the necessity of victory and the consequences of surrender. For him, national security isn’t just another item on the agenda. It is the abiding concern and responsibility of our nation.

This is a man who tied his political fortunes to the fortunes of his country in a time of war. Such courage is not always rewarded in politics, but it was this time – and that is a credit to both the man and to the party he will lead in the election of 2008.

This is a man who has served and suffered for his country. John McCain’s greatest test was long ago. But the loyalty, and love of country, and strength of heart that saw him through are still the qualities that define him. With their rhetoric, our Democratic opponents are very skilled at striking heroic poses. But with our Republican nominee, we’re going to offer America the real thing.

I am pleased to introduce a real America hero, the next president of the United States, Senator John McCain.

It is time for our party to come together by standing behind Senator John McCain for President in order to keep our country prosperous and strong. Thank you once again for your support of our campaign.

Respectfully yours,

Beth Myers
Campaign Manager,
Romney for President, Inc.

Wow…

Last week:

“McCain’s typical of broken Washington. We’d be fools to send him back to D.C. in a different chair.”

This week:

“McCain’s a real American hero and capable of leading America as President.”

FLIP FLOP, FLIP FLOP, FLIP FLOP!

Does Romney actually believe anything he says? Does he expect us to?

His core convictions seem to change on a weekly basis!

Comment by Anna

Romney said he would endorse the nominee whoever it was. Both he and Senator McCain recognized they both still have many differences of opinion on issues facing America.

Everybody who runs for presidency loves their country. Mitt thank you for the passion you showed on the campaign trail.

Romney ‘08 supporters, there still is a conservative choice in Mike Huckabee. Mike has an illegal immigaration plan, like Mitt, that does not involve amnesty. Both are fiscal and social conservatives.

Please join the fight for the conservative soul of the Republican party. There is a choice.

Thanks,

Romney will not let our soldiers die in vain even if it means swallowing his pride and appearing to those without comprehension of how our political system works as though he s flip-flopping, There is NO flip-flop. Romney is leading the people to unite the party behind the republican nominee even if it isn’t him. Isn’t that what we want in a leader.

We must unite or be defeated and we must rally our voters now or it will be too late!

I have enjoyed watching you campaign. I signed up for news alerts from Yahoo on Mitt Romney. This is one way I keep with your campaign. I must say that it took me a long to decide which candidate was aligned with my beliefs as being very conservative. I decided on Mitt Romney. A year ago I was at a convention in San Jose and some of us were discussing the 2008 prersidential election. At that time I still had not made up my mind, but when I did it was Gov. Romney. Mr. Romney, I truly believe and respect you. I look forward to the future and your part in the Republican Party. It has been my party since Ronald Reagan. I would like to add that Mitt Romney is the best, strongest and most presidential of all the candidates I have seen in many years. “W” was pretty close. Go Mitt in 2012. Count on my support.
God bless you and your family.

I pray Romney’s ‘good-bye’ is not a ’see you later’!

I will never (in a million years) vote for this self-centered, power-hungry, presidency-purchasing, god-making, focus group-consulting, fee-raising, dog-torturing, troop-withdrawing, abortion-subsidizing, truth-twisting politician!

Not in 2008, or 2012, or 2016 . . . not even if/when ‘outer darkness’ freezes over - NEVER!

Governor Mitt Romney truly offered the most benefit to our nation’s future. Our failure to get past the anti-Romney media bias and recognize his greatness is Our Loss! I hope our nation can prevail until 2012 and that Governor Romney will still be willing to serve us. If Sen. McCain would select Gov. Romney to be his running mate, their complimentary talents could go a long way toward strengthening our nation and mending much of what is broken in Washington.

Comment by Elizabeth

I plan to campaign for Gov. Mitt Romney in 2012!

Comment by padreD

Imagine that McCain-Romney ticket - two that can’t be trusted, both flip-floppers and both would help take a liberal stand with the democrats and the real republicans would be worse off than we have ever thought of being. I can not believe so many people are dumb enough to see that the old hogs in Wahington and the biased media is trying to select the president for our country.

Let’s move toward change and a real person, not a Washington made flipper, Mike Huckabee has experience and can bring the needed change to our country. McCain has had alot of years and done nothing except hurt the party he says he is for - slaped us in the face how many times? Don’t be mislead into thinking he is changed and will not slap us inthe face again. Remember you can not trust the media they give us what they want us to know and “fair & balanced” means something other than what it should to them! VOTE MIKE HUCKABEE and lets stop this partying and playing around. I am tired of the same old talk and lies we’ve had - lets move to something great in America again. HUCKABEE (along with alot of other real republicans WILL NOT support McCain, I know the media says we will come around, but as usuall, they are wrong! WAIT & SEE

Shelby,

Just a suggestion: You don’t win over Romney supporters to Huckabee by slamming him and falsely denigrating his character. You obviously do not know the man. I am proud of Romney’s grace and class. If your purpose is to rub our nose in it, you have succeeded. If your purpose is to enhance our impression that Huckabee and his supporters are mean spirited, southern bigots, you succeeded. If you want any of us to vote for Huckabee, you failed miserably. By the way, your leader continues to slam Romney and seems to feel it fine that his supporters continue their uninformed religious hatred. He is a scarry man.

Back to Romney: I swore I would never vote for McCain, but would wait it out for a decent candidate in 2012. Romney is making me reconsider. I’m not there yet, but weighing the choice between suffering 4 years of Democrats to get the right candidate in 2012 and (hopefully) unite the Republican Congress against destroying what we have accomplished in Iraq. By endorsing McCain and swallowing his pride, Romney put his country above his own personal desires, something Huckabee has proved unable to do.

Shelby,

I have to add your comment that Romney is a “god-making” person is deeply uninformed and offensive. Don’t pretend you are Christian. Christ never condoned such hatred. Even if you do not agree with the Mormons, think of the parable of the Good Samaritan. Samaritans were considered unorthodox and were shunned by the Jews-sort of the way Evangelicals now treat Mormons. What is interesting is Christ taught that the Good Samaritan was the true neighbor, unlike the professed “Priest” and “Rabbi”. Romney’s grace and class contrasts with Huckabee’s mean spiritedness and lack of ability to forgive, even after his opponent has left the race. “By their fruits ye shall know them”.

I appriciate the GOP’s understanding of the importance of unity, and as a Huckabee supporter I also hold Romney, McCain, and Paul in high respect. However, it seems to the that the GOP is trying to unite before the election is finished, according to their own rules.

Here’s what it comes down to for me: while an election is going on, you vote and endorse with your heart, your values, and your beliefs, because that’s the whole point of the election process. That’s why Romney’s endorsement is a shock to some. It is a truly noble thing to rally behind your party for the sake of unification…AFTER the nominee has been chosen. At that point it’s time for the party to come together. But if you rally behind someone before the nomination is certain the implication is that you’re doing it in alignment to your core values.

Huckabee has stated that if McCain becomes the GOP nominee, he will support him, but (speaking as a supporter) that doesn’t mean Huckabee should just walk off the field when America keeps voting for Huckabee despite the media and GOP party talking him down. When there is a chosen nominee, we should unite despite our differences. When there is an election we should analyze, discuss, challange, draw distinctions and then vote for the person we want!

Or at least, that’s how it used to work back in the old days.

…or so I’m told. :)

Mitt’s Awesome!!!! It’s too bad that he can’t represent our great country for atleast four more years.

Comment by Ginny

Just another example of Mitt’s class. Instead of selfishly thinking of himself, he has taken the high road and done what is best for the Republican party. When it became obvious that Mitt could not win he did the best thing he could do for the party. As sad and disappointed I am in the fact that Mitt will not be our nominee and that he is saying “goodbye”, I think he has conducted himself graciously. I will continue to support Mitt in whatever he does in the future. For now, I must support McCain because the thought of 4+ years of Obama or Hillary is too scary to think about. I appreciate and understand what Mitt is trying to do for the good of our country. Thanks Mitt, you are great!

What the apostle Paul said of the Jews, I would say (sincerely) of Mormons . . .

“Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites (and Mormons) is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. Christ is the end of the law (man-made righteousness) so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.” (Romans 10:1-4)

MIKE HUCKABEE IS A SNAKE OIL SALESMAN!

Huckabee raised a son who stoned and hung a dog to death. David was fired as a Boy Scout’s counselor for disobeying the “Be Kind” scout’s creed . Daddy Huck hindered the police investigation of David for animal cruelty. This should bring pause to anyone thinking of voting for Huckabee. Family animal cruelty issues often times indicate other problems as well. http://www.newsweek.com/id/78241

Mike Huckabee does not appear to have the best judgment. He pressured the Arkansas Parole Board to free a convicted rapist, Wayne Dumond — who then moved to Missouri and raped and killed two more women. Worse yet, he lies to this day about it, denying he had a role. Huckabee’s former lawyer — referred to reporters by Huckabee’s own campaign, to support his story — actually said that the governor called Dumond’s sentence “outlandish” and “way out of line”, and that Huckabee pushed for Dumond’s release. Huckabee refuses to release the documents from his office concerning the case. A former aide has said that Huckabee’s staff discussed how to make sure that documents about the case, especially the letters from other Dumond victims, could be kept secret. When he left the governor’s office, Huckabee spent the entire governor’s emergency budget - set aside for hurricans, tornadoes and the like — destroying the hard drives of 100 computers in the governor’s office.

Huckabee commuted or pardoned over 669 prisoners, including 12 murderers — 10 times as many as Bill Clinton did over 9 years, and more than all of the larger states surrounding Arkansas put together — as long as they claimed to be born-again Christians, or worked at the governor’s mansion, or played in the prison band. http://www.realchange.org/huckabee.htm

Huckabee could never win in a general election. He wants to amend the Constitution to his religious agenda. This would alienate too many moderates and independents. Americans don’t want to be ruled by an extreme religious leader. Huckabee underperformed in every state that didn’t have a strong base of evangelicals, even losing to Ron Paul in five of those states.

Please keep in mind, Huckabee may be an ex-preacher, but ACTIONS ALWAYS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS! Please do your homework before voting for this man!

Romney turned his back and his coat on Conservatives by endorsing McCain. Notice I said Conservatives, not Republicans. Romney’s delegates still have a choice, as do the states who have not voted in their primarys, yet. Question is, will Romney’s delegates abandon all that Romney stood for to follow the “me too” crowd back to Washington for more of the same, or will they take a stand for the Conservative Core moral and principled values? There is still a Conservative in this race. Mike Huckabee. Voters deserve a choice and a voice. Contrary to “popular” belief, this race is not over.

Shelby, knock it off with the sleazy conspiracy website lies. Those accusations against Gov. Huckabee were attempts by Clinton supporters to dredge up mud to sling at the Governor during election and re-election Arkansas Gov. campaigns. The BEST man won every time.

What is happening now, is an attempt by the “me too” crowd to SILENCE voices that still believe the election process should be carried out to the last man standing and speaking FOR THEM.

Comment by RD

LUCY… this is not from a conspiracy site.

One reason Huckabee cited was “I couldn’t get you to help me with my son when I had that problem,” according to Bailey. “Without question, [Huckabee] was making a conscious attempt to keep the state police from investigating his son,” says I. C. Smith, the former FBI chief in Little Rock, who worked closely with Bailey and called him a “courageous” and “very solid” professional.

Is this the type of man we want as president. I say ABSOLUTELY NO!!!

If Huckabee were not such a con man, maybe Romney would have had a choice.

Comment by Ryan Heath

RE: Shelby: as a a Mormon I find your comment unbelievably patronizing. (regarding the Romans 10:1-4) Do you honestly believe that given the strict requirements of being a Mormon that we are all just a bunch of simpletons only need to hear the real truth? I can attest that most Christians while many have great faith and are excellent people understand only the very surface of their own religion. I have had many long discussions with pastors, and priests. Many of whom I count as my friends and what I can tell you, is that when you really start digging in to the core beliefs of Baptists, Methodists, Protestants, Catholics, and Mormons, you will see that we all believe the same thing. What I have also found, is that in all areas where our beliefs do differ, the only way you can justify the difference as a Non-Mormon is to ignore some portion of the Bible. It took me 20 years of research to figure this out, but it is the truth, and I find it amusing that you would point at Mormons as the ones who simply don’t understand.

Next time you start thinking about that ask your self, why does my church not have Apostles and Prophets, Why don’t we understand Baptisms for the dead? If we are saved by faith alone, then what does it mean that “Faith without works is dead” and how do these two seemingly contradictory doctrines co-exist?

This list goes on and on, and most good Christians don’t even seem to want to think about it. Which means they are happy to drink the milk of the gospel but hesitant to chew on the meat.

I would suggest you save your pity, stop blindly following your pastor (who has no more authority to interpret the scripture than you do) and start reading and studying the scriptures and start asking questions.

You know what is really funny, is that if Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee got into a debate of scripturally founded beliefs, Mitt would bury Huckabee. Of course this debate would not solve anything, or convert anyone, but it would be fun to watch.

Comment by Shelby

You are so self-deluded. You act as if you are a biblical scholar. Do you have a doctorate in theology? I do! And to suggest Romney knows more about the Bible than Huckabee…what utter nonsense! Believe what you want to (obviously), but don’t lie and call it Christian or Bible-based. May God open your eyes to His truth. And may you have the humility and intelligence to seek Him through His Word, and not through supplemental so-called ’scriptures’ written by your non-prophets. I pity you!

Comment by Joel O

Shelby,
Glad you have a degree in theology! Did God himself come down and give you your degree and annoint you all knowing? Didn’t think so! That’s right you got a degree from a man made University from people that make money telling other what the Bible says. Now you are quailified to teach your man made theology at your man made church.

Spew all the hate you want Shelby, it won’t change the fact the Huckabee can’t and won’t win!

Comment by Ryan Heath

Well, lets see, a Doctorate in Theology, no, I did study in a Seminary for 3 years. Then upon becomming truley converted I spent 2 years on a LDS mission preaching and studying the Gospel all day every day. So while I don’t have a Doctorate, you could hardly call me unlearned. I also find it interesting that rather than address any of my questions, you simply fall back on your Doctorate degree. Well, since you have your Doctorate, then my questions should be easily answered. I’m waiting….

As to my comment about Mitt and Huckabee, its purely speculation I grant you, but Mitt also served a mission (spent 2.5 years in France) then in later life went on to be a Bishop of the LDS church and then later on a Stake President (considering your long study of theology I’m sure you are well versed in what these posistions are) But in a nut shell it means that Mitt has all the experience of a minister, plus he is just a heck of a lot smarter than Huckabee. I also base this comment on the simple fact that I have never met a single pastor or minister (and I have met many) that could best me at the scriptures and they always fall back to the same kind of crap answer that you just did, “I’m a minister, or a pastor, or I have a Doctorate in Theology so I know more than you” but they are never able to answer even the most basic of questions. You call my comments arrogant, I say thay are based on long experience and deep study.

Comment by Ryan Heath

In Shelby’s defense, I don’t believe she is spewing hate. (though there are many others that have) I believe she is speaking out based on deeply held beliefs. You can never fault anyone for holding true to their beliefs. That is a key factor in what makes this country beutiful. We are all allowed to have those different beliefs.

Shelby you don’t need to pity me; I feel my salvation is in excellent hands. If my previous comments have offended anyone I do apoligize. Its just very frustrating to hear other people spread mis-information about your beliefs. Its the same frustration Mitt Romney displayed when McCain was inisisting he had called for a specific date of withdrawl from Iraq when he had obviously not said anything of the sort. Sometimes you just feel the need to lash back.

Comment by Kelly Warnick

Scholars will speak highly of the Romney campaign. It’s unfortunate that
Huck employed religious bigotry to derail a formidable candidate. I feel
that when the dust settles on the evangelistic ANTics that Huck stirred up,
the religious right will feel a bit manipulated by Huckabee. They should
have weighed out more of what their heart first told them. Romney was the
straw poll winner and was out in front in Iowa before Huck stirred up
trouble. After each primary, Mitt’s respect returned in nearly every primary
state but it was just too late. If I am right, and McCain is truly smart
enough to lead this country, he will humble himself to see the merits of
Mitt Romney and capitalize on his wisdom by adding him to the ticket.
Everybody wins, McCain gets his long-awaited presidency, Romney gets to
assist in making this nation better immediately and starts ramping up to his
own presidency and the religious right get to repent for putting their trust
in the flesh of Huck’s selfish arm.

In case anyone is wondering, everything I have said is absolutely true.

I did study in the seminary for 3 years
I did serve a 2 year mission to preach the gospel. (at my own expense)
I have continued to study the gospel ( I even teach a class on occasion)

You know I see a lot of posts telling people that if they want to know about Mormons they should ask one. Well here I am folks, ask away.

It is so amazing the utter hatred that is being thrown around on these comments. Obviously no true Christians would be so hateful, cruel, and despise another. The Jesus I know taught tolerence of those that are different, Love of neighbor and all people are our neighbors. Look at your heart and see the need to change and become like the Savior of all mankind.
Not a mere confession of belief because the ” the devil believes and he trembles” belief is not enough, real heart felt change is what is needed. Please do not spew hatred in the name of God. He is not like that at all. Think about it. Get to really KNOW him.
