5-Star Safety Rating System Brings Transparency to Credit Card Agreements

Washington, D.C. – Working to give consumers the tools to make informed choices about complex credit card agreements, U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Barack Obama (D-IL) today introduced the “Credit Card Safety Star Act of 2007.” The legislation creates a five-star safety rating system for credit cards in order to increase the transparency of credit card agreements and encourage issuers to abandon abusive practices by offering consumers fair terms they can understand.

“This legislation will help people understand if they can expect their card issuer to treat them fairly, or kick them when they are down,” said Wyden. “With the financial future of so many Americans dependent upon unreadable jargon in credit card documents, arming consumers with usable information is more critical than ever.”

“Consumers need some way to know which credit cards are safe and which ones are most likely to get them into financial trouble with fees, penalties, and charges,” Senator Obama said. “A Safety Star system is an innovative approach to require credit card companies to increase transparency and hold them accountable for any hidden charges or changes. This bill will give consumers a powerful tool to protect themselves, while giving credit card companies an incentive to improve their practices.”

Much like the five-star crash test rating system for new cars, the “Credit Card Safety Star Act of 2007” will give consumers a window into the safety of their credit cards. Under the legislation, every credit card, billing statement, agreement, application, and piece of marketing material will be required to carry the credit card’s safety star rating, which will range anywhere from one to five stars, with five stars representing the safest cards. …..

2. Has already traveled extensively with the foreign committee, including visits to Russia and Iraq, among many others.

4. Demonstrated ability to get bills passed, such as ethics reform, and to get both Republicans and Democrats to come together to get bills past gridlocks (gridlock means NO issues are progressed).

Oh yeah - he has also shown good judgment by the fact that he put the right people together in the right way to work on his campaign. He has also shown that he engenders strong loyalty, cohesion and commitment from the people that have worked for him and has kept his team tight, unlike others who tend to ‘reshuffle’ people when things don’t go their way. That is part of being ‘right’ from the start and a testament to his people skills, which one would argue strongly are desirable in a leader.

Despite attacks and mis-truths and under-handed tactics from an establishment that has been supporting the interests of the Clinton campaign he has managed to come out stronger, while Clinton’s ill-advised statements, actions and tactics have continued to alienate Democrats from her.

anonymous– I think there are more important issues at hand like the economy and the war. Health care will be taken care of when the economy improves and people can find jobs that include health care. If that is the only reason you are voting for Obama then you obviously don’t care about the more important problems this country is facing. We need strong leadership, not empty promises of hope and change without laying out a plan to achieve those campaign promises. How is Obama going to give us this change? Obama is one of the emptiest candidates in this race in my opinion. His game plan usually includes something like this:

1. Have Opera introduce him. (Because we all know that we should vote for someone just because they are endorsed by a celebrity)
2. Stand up and give a speech where he says “change”, “hope” and/or “Yes, we can” until he is blue in the face. (Funny he never defines what the change is, what the hope is or what it is that we can do)
3. Be charismatic and promise the moon and the stars to everyone. (Empty promises in my opinion)
4. Rinse and repeat.

If the Republicans had actually nominated a candidate that I feel is worth supporting then I would gladly “bring it on” but as it stands we will likely have old (and I do mean old) Juan “I still support amnesty” McInsane. Obama will probably win, but not because he is better. I swear that some people support Obama simply because he is hip, charismatic and because the media is in love with him. To people under this category: This isn’t American Idol, this is the presidency. How hip and cool a candidate is should be but footnotes to more important things like where they stand on the issues, the quality of their personal lives, etc.

I love to sit and read love stories and watch Lifetime movies on T.V. also but, as we all know, that is not the real world! Inspiration comes from proven leadership and experience. If you had to have a life saving surgury would you choose a surgeon with 4 years experience or a surgeon with 35 years of experience?

Before we, the American people, consider putting Senator John McCain in the white house, there are some things to be considered. When my family contacted him on three different occasions about violation of our Constitutional Rights, we did receive correspondence back on all three. The bottom line is he did nothing to help us. My father is a Korean War Veteran. I only mention this because it is used by Senator McCain in his campaign. So apparently it alone is supposed to stand for something.
A doctor and his wife, Arizona Residents, filed a dependency petition in AZ for 2 minor children that were residents of Nevada. Not only did AZ have them brought to the petitioners but they also did not tell NV that they were residents of the state. AZ also never contacted the immediate family and when the family found them on their own, the state refused to process them. The Korean War Veteran I spoke of is the Paternal Grandfather to these children. The Attorney General’s office in AZ have stated in federal court documents that “at all times have acted Under a Color of Law.” I guess baby brokering is legal in the state of Arizona! The children have been adopted by these people and the immediate family has been severed (even though we passed a home study in Florida).
If Senator McCain cannot help protect the rights of one family how will he run a nation. (copies of letters from Sen. McCain upon request)

Hillary preaches that she is going to fight and work hard for the people, yet here in Maryland I have not seen one person from her campaign out in my part of the state nor did I see one flyer nor did she bother to visit my area. She has repeatedly stated that these states mean nothing because I wasn’t favored to do well anyway which is sense discounting all those people in these areas. She claims that the big states are what matters so I ask you… is this the sign of a leader? All she does is throw in the towel and concedes any chance of gaining an advantage rather then fight for voter support. Sounds to me that her motto should be… I am for only the big states forget the little people.

As for Mr. Obama he has made stops all over the state as well as having people out knocking on doors and talking to people and handing out fliers. He even made the effort to visit my area Saturday to talk the people. This is what makes a real leader one who goes to the people regardless of weather he stands a chance of winning or not.
