McCain “quite pleased” with his standing despite weekend losses to Huckabee

Annapolis, MD — Acknowledging that he has “a lot of work to do” to attract and energize the conservative base, Sen. John McCain said Monday he continues to increase his share of the conservative vote and is on pace to seal up the GOP nomination in the coming weeks.

“We are doing fine. We have 700 some close to 800 delegates. And the last time I checked Governor (Mike) Huckabee has very few…..we continue our movement in the right direction,” McCain said at a Monday press conference, when asked about weekend losses to Huckabee in Kansas and Louisana. McCain is well positioned to grab more than 100 delegates in the Virginia, DC and Maryland primaries scheduled for Tuesday, noting he believes “it’s important that we do well tomorrow”

“I have said we have a lot of work to do to unite the party…we are doing very well with conservative voters. We continue to increase our share of the vote with conservative voters and we will continue to work with them,” he added, when asked about President Bush’s weekend comments that the Arizona senator has some work ahead to unite critical conservatives around his candidacy.

The campaign is touting the endorsement of former Family Research Council president Gary Bauer. In a written statement released this morning, Bauer said he “admire(s) his consistent 24-year pro-life record and demonstrated commitment to the values that keep our families and communities strong. John McCain alone has the experience, character and credibility to lead as commander in chief on day one and defeat the transcendent threat of our time — radical Islamic extremism. I am proud to support John McCain for president.”

The Arizona Senator also denied that his campaign had any role in Governor Rick Perry’s phone call to Huckabee over the weekend in which the Texas Governor allegedly asked McCain’s rival to drop out.

Additionally, McCain said Huckabee is entitled to call for a recount into the Washington State Primary results, but added that he believes the state party had “sufficient evidence,” to declare him the victor. “I think it is pretty clear that we won,” he said.

Can anyone verify the straw poll taken in Utah over the weekend? I heard Obama beat McCain by quite a bit.

Huckabee has NO chance to win the nomination!

He’s hoping to get enough delegates to keep McCain from the nomination—taking us to a brokered convention—-where he can negotiate his way onto the ticket as VP!

This is classic Washington style politics at it’s best! No consideration for the good of the party, no worrying about what a brokered convention will do to our party’s chances in November—-not a care in the world—-except his own ambitions to become President someday—somehow!

Huckabee is the biggest “Wolf in Sheeps clothing” since Bill Clinton!!!!

Comment by Leslie

The Lord is probably displeased with Huckabee using him as a political chit.

Comment by Scott

Well the liklihood is that McCain will sweep Virginia, DC, and Maryland and he’s currently leading strongly in Wisconsin. That will probably be the kiss of death for Huck. Now if he manages to make a charge in those states it might get interesting but only from the perspective that Huck will be delaying the inevitable

Comment by Malt

I still think that Romney is the best candidate for president. If you agree, vote for Romney in the Virginia, DC, Maryland, Texas,… PRIMARIES/CAUCUSES. Romney has suspended his campaign, but if he gets enough support, he’s not out of the process.

In the end, for the sake of the country, vote for whatever republican candidate wins the nomination IN THE GENERAL ELECTION. Both Hillary and (a very likable) Obama would be terrible for the country.

Comment by Justamere10

Regardless of his faults, McCain is almost without doubt the GOP presidential nominee.

I think if he very soon announced Mitt Romney as his running mate that conservatives would rally around the McCain/Romney ticket and immediately gear up for the fight to defeat the Democratic nominee in November.

If it goes all the way to a brokered convention Huckabee has a very good chance of becoming the nominee. he has a very good chance of pulling this off. ANd to all those that say it would be best for him just to drop out do not understadn the power that FREE media has to offer. IF he dropped out all the press would be talking about is Hillary and Obama…… is that what you really want???????

I COULD NEVER VOTE FOR MIKE HUCKABEE BECAUSE OF WHAT I’VE LEARNED ABOUT HIM

Many would question whether Mike Huckabee is a true conservative; I would question whether he is even a true CHRISTIAN! For an ex-Baptist preacher, the man sure has a potty mouth! Re: where to put the flag pole if anyone disagreed with his position on the Confederate flag, and also considering the risqué music/song lyrics used by Huckabee and his band, Capitol Offense. Imagine the pastor of your church singing H*y Tonk Woman or Devil With a Blue Dress (song lyrics would be offensive to many) (www.irdial.com/blogdial/?p=909).

Huckabee has a history of corruption and lack of ethics and is one of two republican presidential candidates on the list of TOP TEN MOST CORRUPT POLITICIANS of 2007 (www.judicialwatch.org). One example, after being married for 30 years, Huckabee set up a WEDDING registry at Target for him and his wife to receive gifts for their house. The wedding registry was a way to avoid ethics laws prohibiting gifts to politicians.

Huckabee has also spawned a son who stoned and hung a dog to death. David was fired as a Boy Scout’s counselor for disobeying the “Be Kind” rule. Daddy Huck hindered the police investigation of David for animal cruelty. This should bring pause to anyone thinking of voting for Huckabee. Family animal cruelty issues often times indicate other problems as well.

His personality is described at Wikipedia as petty, thin-skinned, self-righteous, and somewhat vindictive (www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Huckabee).

He could never win in a general election. Imagine his Confederate flag flap being played over and over in the Dem’s TV ads. And he wants to amend the Constitution to his religous agenda. This would alienate too many moderates and independents.

YOU ARE WASTING YOU VOTE IF YOU VOTE FOR HUCKABEE!

The Republican party, is going to crumble if its current leaders do not step up and show some leadership.

To bad, so sad that they didn’t get the rich guy they wanted for President and their efforts have hurt the Republican race.

Against all odds, we are choosing Mike Huckabee to be our President, so stop with the harassment and allow us our choice.

I am a former Marine of 13 years who got out of the military this year. I thought we were fighting for our freedoms as well as those of other people around the world. We are OUTRAGED!!!!!!!!

Huck will get what he deserves… what goes around comes around. He’s selling us out for his ego’s sake… said it himself, he’s staying in the race just to ‘watch himself.’ He admitted he knows he can’t ‘win.’ So, keep dividing the party Huckabee - what IS your angle anyway.

We will have to rally behind McCain no matter what our first choice. Romney said it when he stepped down. We must strengthen our party to beat the Democrats in November.

God Bless you Romney… and thank you for showing love for our country and keeping our best interests at heart. You didn’t ‘lose’ … you proved your integrity and honor.

Mitt Romney for Vice President!! : ) We can hope, right?

I would like to see one more debate between McCain & Huckabee. I know McCain doesn’t have to engage in this but it would be a chance for him to put Huckabee away once and for all. Or maybe not! After the last debate I wondered if McCain and Romney engaging each other was a way of keeping Huckabee silent. In a one on one debate we could size each of them up. As of now Huckabee has my vote on values and experience.

Comment by Sarah L

I stand by Huckabee because he believes in something a little bigger than himself or the political party. He takes a stand for God, his beliefs pertain to His understanding of right and wrong. I am grateful for the voters that take a stand even though another candidate may seem more popular. One voice truly makes a difference, especially if it’s a good one. I am so thankful that we have someone like Huckabee who Still Cares. . about what the Bible says. To some of us, it’s not outdated and it’s not crazy. It’s bigger than a popularity contest. It has to do with Jesus and what He’s done for us. May our country know how great He is and stand by the men who stand by Him.

Hallelujah… still

Just got back from a standing room crowd at Va Beach for Huckabee. Duncan Hunter, a true conservative was there! It was great, and screw the press, and all these armchair politicians putting their arms around McLame. I’m with Rush - if McLame is the GOP, I’m staying home. Go Mike Go!! Virginia - vote Huckabee. Do NOT listen to the polls. He can do this.

Comment by Neutrino

Do NOT vote for Mike Huckabee. The man is NOT a conservative. Conservatives don’t have a net tax increase of half a billion dollars. They don’t pardon 12 convicted murderers. They are not soft on immigration. Lastly, conservatives are not religious bigots for the most part. You cannot give power to someone who is a religious bigot, especially when our country is founded upon the principle of men worshipping how or what they may. A vote for Mike Huckabee is a vote for religious intolerance.

WOW!!! There sure seems to be A LOT of bitter Mormons out there. These people would rather see Hillary or Obama get the ticket than for Huckabee to stand a chance in Hell at getting it. I’m not a Christian but after this crap I’ll definetly NEVER listen to a Mormon about what they believe. Their message is nothing about forgiveness. I thought that was what Jesus was all about.

McCain and Huckabee are both morons and they’re both going to get trounced, which is probably a good thing, as Republicans won’t be able to be blamed for the damage that the Dems inflict.

I am embarrassed for Republicans when I have to think about McCain or Huckabee having to debate Hillary or Obama. Ouch…. I mean, you saw McCain stammer off beauty pageant answers in his debates. If it wasn’t so tragic for our country it would be a scream….

But their stupidy means OUR stupidity.

But we voted for what was IMPORTANT!!! Romney has funny underwear! Do we even know whether Hillary wears briefs or a thong?

Comment by Neutrino

William,

Your comment about Mormons is a bit presumptuous on your part. I didn’t see any religious affiliation stated by those who are voicing their opposition towards Huckabee in the preceding posts. My comments are based on the observations and actions of someone who is running for the highest office in the land. I don’t care whether he/she targets Mormons, Catholics, Atheists, or whatever. Someone who advocates intolerance towards ANY individual because of their belief system cannot and should not be allowed, especially if that someone is running for President of the United States. Using religion to advance a political platform is scary to me, given the separation that should exist between Church and state. Huckabee’s insidious approach of using the religion card to get gain and power should scare anyone. The founding fathers must be turning in their graves…

Comment by Sean

Dan Campbell:

In my precinct meeting at the Washington State caucuses on Saturday, the ONLY military members there and the only immediate family of military members there ALL voted for Ron Paul. A good percentage of those stated that they would have voted for Romney had be still been in the race.

Ron Paul has the highest number of active duty military members supporting his campaign. What do you think that means…?

William,

Why are you assuming that those who are anti McCain are automatically Mormon? It is true that there are many people who are upset about Romney dropping out (for that matter there are a lot of people upset about Thompson dropping out too) but, 1 that doesn’t mean that they are all Mormon and 2 it would seem to me that it is more conservatives are mad about a man they deem to be a liberal (McCain) getting the nomination. Romney and Thompson were the conservatives in the race and a lot of people (people mind you, not Mormons) are upset about the ways that Romney and Thompson were treated by Huckabee and McCain.

Comment by John

William… Huckabee has not, and does not act like a christian. His behavior during the campaign and his comment about staying in the race just because he likes to ‘watch himself.’ That’s the kind of ego that will hurt our party.

Romney showed honor and integrity by stepping down when he did. He loves this country and proved it. We must back the frontrunner McCain, even if he was not our first choice, or what Romney predicted will come true.

Vote for McCain… would be nice if Romney would be VP - we can hope. Keep our party strong!!

Comment by Myself

It is hilarius to see all the Romney supporters bashing Huckabee because their candidate left. Did you ever see a Romney supporter (or this many) bashing Huckabee before he left. Don’t think so. They are whining and they choose to play the religion card and attack a decent, Godly man. None of you will ever convince me of your lies. Get over it, deal with it, suck it up. Vote for someone still in the race, be it McCain, Huckabee, or Paul. Geeze-a-loo!!!

Comment by William

I’m basing my assumptions on many posts here on the Fox News blogs and in the 10 or 12 Mormons that I know personally. These folks all but get violent when you try and discuss why anyone (whether it be Thompson, Huckabee, Paul, Hunter, etc.) was a better candidate than Romney. The fact is that most of the people that seem so bitter are admitting that they are Mormon. I’m not here to pick a fight. There are far more Mormons than there are me so I’d never win. I’m just saying that based on their behavior in this presidential race, I want nothing to do with them or their god. The way I see it, everyone has as much “right” to be angry at Romney for not getting out sooner as they do Huckabee. To disagree with this would be one sided and a double standard. Allāhu Akbar!!!

Comment by Carol

I just read a comment on another FOX comment section by a fellow that claimed Romney had won only 3 states — and that they were all Mormon states….

Wow. The misinformation our media has pumped out this election cycle is nothing less than criminal — treasonous actually.

Why did this guy think that Romney had only won 3 states? Because that is what the media wanted him to think — and he believed it.

Had he been investigating for himself, he would have learned that Romney had won 11 states before withdrawing, and was significantly ahead of Huckabee even when he withdrew. Perhaps this guy would have started to question his sources…

Rather than concluding that Romney thought he could only win Mormon states, this fellow might have concluded that Romney saw that Huckabee was willing to let that proverbial baby be sawn in half…. So he let Huckabee have the baby and bowed out….

Comment by Michael Litz

McCain should be joining WITH Huckabee in expressing outrage at the ridiculous decision of the Washington state chairman to NOT COUNT all the VOTES!! Further, as the author of the McCain Kennedy AMNESTY bill John McCain has FORFEITED any
right to even be CONSIDERED for the job of Commander in Chief of this country. No man who would REWARD the GUILTY at the expense of the LAW-ABIDING should EVER hold ANY office in America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Comment by Eric

William,

The reason that many believe that it should have been Huckabee bowing out is that Huckabee was significantly BEHIND Romney, in delegates and in actual popular vote.

But who knows what would have happened…? Just as Huckabee has not picked up the votes of former Romney supporters, perhaps Romney would not have picked up the votes of Huckabee supporters….

Comment by Ellen

Myself,

We did vote for someone still in the race: Ron Paul.

Now there is a decent Christian who doesn’t think his supporters are so dim-witted as to be lured in by posting a cross in a politcal ad. There is a Christian who believes in the separation of powers. And there is a Christian who doesn’t make bigoted remarks about other denominations….

You Huck supporters could learn a LOT about Christianity from Ron Paul. Perhaps you could become do-ers of the word, and not hear-ers only, though I think that verse is sorta crossed out of your Bibles….

Looks like Huckabee has turned to the lawyers instead of God for his “miracle”.

I have to agree. The race should not have been declared until ALL the votes were counted and McCain should condemn this action as well.

Those who underestimate Mike Huckabee do so at their own peril. When he first started his campaign, they told him that it would never get off the ground because he had no money, the media said he needed at least 10 million dollars, ha not Mike.

The pundits and media had no idea how popular this man would become. In August they were still counting him out, the media hardly carried anything about him and if they did it was negative. Mike Huckabee was attacked by a huge ad campaign put out by Mitt Romney in Iowa, against all odds Mike Huckabee won.

When Mike decided to carry on in this election, everyone told him to drop out, you cannot win, Mike went on to win Arkansas, West Virginia, Alabama, Louisiana, Kansas, Georgia and probably Washington state (we will know when they stop playing political games).

You see no one in the media or the pundits thought that Mike Huckabee would succeed and he has. You cannot count Mike Hucakbee out, he is the candidate of the people and he is doing well standing up to the establishment candidate John McCain. The people want Mike, The Washington beltway wants McCain. Who will win? I put my money on the peoples candidate.

Mike Huckabee has proven that he is a fiscal conservative by spending each and every campaign dollar wisely. Mike has shown he has strength in the face of persecution, true grit and enormous drive. Mike Huckabee has all the qualities we want (the people) in a President..

I have been a Huckabee supporter for a long time and with each fight or obstacle that Mike Huckabee overcomes, I admire him even more..

America is missing out on a truly great leader who can bring refreshing and stable change, if they fail to put Mike Huckabee into office..

But if you people want to coronate John McCain, you will get Washington as usual, no change and the same old failed policies. A John McCain Presidency would be about as refreshing as the scent of an old stale cigar…

Comment by The Other Beth

Huckabee’s supporters range far beyond the religious right and evangelical base he’s credited with; we support him because he’s the only candidate with a tough stand on illegal immigration (how has that issue been sidelined?!), because we support the FairTax (please visit http://www.fairtax.org), because he’s a magnificent orator, with Reagan-like communications skills…for myriad reasons. We believe that a brokered convention is possible. We believe that the Republican Party needs a candidate who can inspire a renewed enthusiasm, with a constituency that will actively work to put our guy in the White House in the upcoming election. It’s going to take that kind of dedication and drive to beat the Democratic ticket, and folks, that guy is not John McCain!

It is interesting to point out, as Governor Huckabee did on NPR today, that the states in which he’s won are states that are going to be vital in the general election for the GOP. Many of McCain’s delegates come from traditionally Democratic states, where we don’t stand a chance in November.

I urge all Republican and Independent voters to take a good look at Governor Huckabee, rather than believe what is portrayed in the media. He is far better qualified through executive experience than any remaining candidate, bar none.

GET A CLUE AMERICA… this country needs GOD more than ever and we need a man who will lead us…

Again, you CANNOT vote for someone who advances their political agenda on the basis of religion while stepping on other religions or beliefs in the process. Huckabee has done just that to get gain and power. On this merit alone, he disqualifies himself as a Presidential candidate. The insidious nature of his politics laced with his disturbing religious twist cannot be accepted. In the mind of Huckabee, the separation of Church and State is null and void. On this point alone, he must be summarily rejected!

How can you vote for someone who has over 1000 pardons of convicted criminals (12 of those being ers) on his resume? How can you vote for someone who wants to shut down Gitmo and bring those detainees into this country to have rights under our Constitution? Are you kidding me? This man is NOT a true conservative. At least with McCain, people know what they’re getting. With Huckabee, it’s anyone’s guess. The uncertainty poses a risk we just can’t accept. Vote NO for Mike Huckabee!

The Republican who stopped the counting with more than 1500 votes to count with a difference of about 200 votes calling it for McCain is a BAFOON and a disgrace to the party. Anyone remember Rossi V Gregoire? Why are Washington Republicans sabotaging themselves against something as basic as the democratic election process? This lack of integrity makes me want to smack the crap out of these allegedly honest voting officials. Why not let every vote be counted? (correctly and honestly) Isn’t that what literally HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of our soldiers and sailors have died defending? While I concede that Mr. Huckabee has a very slim chance of winning the nomination, but nonetheless, why not let it play out fairly?

I was a very disappointed Romney supporter who had to figure out where to send my vote upon his withdrawal. Since I was intimately familiar with the politics of McCain and Huckabee, I thought I owed it to myself to check out Ron Paul SERIOUSLY and not just use him as a protest vote.

Now I wonder why I wasn’t supporting him from the beginning. Oh yeah…. I thought he had no chance… But he WOULD have had a chance if EVERYONE would not just dismiss him as a kook.

The only thing kooky about Ron paul is that he is not your typical slime-ball politician. Why are we so comfortable with corruption and willing to accept it if comes from someone we like…?

Huh, McCain supporters?
Huh, Huckabee supporters?
Huh Romney supporters?

Ron Paul cannot make it this time, but America needs to listen to this man. Why not start here:
