Well, one thing is for sure from reading these comments -- today's Republican Party is splitting, not just down the middle, but into faction upon faction. There hardly seems to be anything the posters can agree upon (not even the Reagan record), except for a general dislike of Democrats.

My take? Well, cards on the table: most people would describe my politics as well to the left of the so-called "center" (moving target as it is); I have no problem saying that Bush is the worst president in living memory, possibly in all of American history, and has done such unprecedented damage to this country in so short a time that WHOEVER is elected to succeed him will have his work cut out for him just climbing out of the hole we're in.

Thus, it should be no surprise that issue for issue, I disagree with McCain at least two times out of three. He IS a "conservative"; his voting record leaves no room for doubt about that, despite the bizarre litmus tests of ideological purity some try to subject him to. Yet, for all that, I thought he was a good candidate back in 2000, and could genuinely have seen myself voting for him had he been nominated.

That's not true any longer. IMHO he's already spent too much time and energy sucking up to the far-right lunatic fringe of the GOP to convincingly embody "straight talk" the way he did eight years ago. But that's just my take; not everybody necessarily agrees, of course... which is why he's emerging as the least-worst of the GOP candidates and the presumptive nominee. What some of the more strident posters here don't seem to realize is that the ONLY reason McCain is doing as well as he is, the only reason he might be even remotely competitive in November, is precisely that he's perceived as a moderate (more than he really is), as a man of personal integrity, and as a break from the Bush regime of which most Americans are so well and truly sick.

Thus, the problem with him cozying up to Karl Rove should be obvious: it flushes away those advantages. Rove is a die-hard right-winger, intimately connected with Bush, and most importantly the very embodiment of dirty, dishonest, Macchiavellian politics -- not only in general, but specifically against McCain himself in the 2000 South Carolina primaries. He is thus the exact opposite of the image McCain is trying to project, and there is no plausible way that associating with him could NOT hurt McCain more than it helps him. That he'd even consider Rove's "advice" speaks only to how desperate he is.

Willing to take advice from Karl Rove is a bad thing and means McCain is dirty?

Are you just going to resort to angry Bush-bashing to make a point? What is bad about taking campaign advice from the architect of the last two successful President campaigns?

If you're a highschool pitcher, and Roger Clemens wanted to give you advice, you'd listen, wouldn't you? So the man took steroids, does that mean he doesn't know what he is talking about?

I've seen opinion pieces already bashing McCain for saying he'd take advice from Rove, I just see it as much ridiculous partisan bashing. It is pitiful.

People don't like Karl Rove because of his association with Bush, but he is still probably the best campaign manager and strategist in the country, he did deliver 8 years of Bush, including growing his margin of victory for the second term. Not taking his advice would be crazy, and taking his advice doesn't mean you agree with all of the policies of the last administration he advised.

Sen. John McCain beware! Karl Rove is off to horrible start on Faux News. He starts his support for you by going against the base of the GOP! By joining the establishment chorus against Gov. Huckabee, Rove shows that he is no different from the rest of the chattering pundits. He wants to use religion to get to power but despises Gov. Huckabee, a sincerely religious person, and the millions of Christian voters who support him.

As a conservative Iowa evangelical, I am uncomfortable with McCain. He is a bitter pill that can only be swallowed in November if he is coated with Huck (berry). Sen. McCain, you will need Huck's Army in November.

It is so transparent what the strategy is for labeling McCain a liberal. He has to distance himself from the previous administration in order to win over voters who are tired of the status quo.

Dr. Rice would never agree to run as VP as long as there is a black or a woman running against her party. She would not stoop so low as to join the race just to be a token. It didn't work when the GOP ran Alan Keyes against Barack Obama in Illinois a few years ago. It won't work now. People would see right through it all, as I'm sure Dr. Rice would, too.

McCain would be smart to put someone else with lots of political experience on his ticket, like Warner or Lindsey Graham. Dr. Rice could continue as Secretary of State, or go for her preferred position, commissioner of baseball - or is it football? Maybe she'll end up heading some conservative think tank, but I don't think she'd want to be a VP.

Looks like Carl Rove has joined the bandwagon and donated in the hopes of securing a job from McCain should he win. What a spineless snake. He will even slither to the other liberal side when it is in his best interest.

I do hope that when Carl appears next time with his handy white chart he let's everyone know that he is no longer an unbiased political analyst. The American people deserve to know the truth.

Want to see Mike Huckabee's plan to eliminate your income taxes and get rid of the IRS?
