McCain open to advice, cash from Karl Rove

Seattle, WA – Maintaining that he does not hold any grudges from the 2000 GOP nomination fight, John McCain says that Karl Rove’s help and advice is welcome aboard the Straight Talk Express.

One day after Rove, a former senior aide to President Bush and architect of the 2000 and 2004 victories, donated $2,300 to McCain’s campaign, the presumptive nominee said Friday aboard his campaign plane that he is open Rove’s support in this year’s election.

“Nobody denies that he is one of the smartest political minds in America. I’d be glad to have him give us advice,” McCain said, joking that “saw the moths fly out” of Rove’s wallet upon receiving the donation.

“They beat me (in 2000). I would certainly be happy to have them give us advice….. he has a very good, great political mind and any information or advice and counsel e could give us I would be glad to have,” he added.

I have been a supporter of Mc Cain from the start but I felt that Bush should have dumped Rove after the lst term. Mc Cain needs keep his moderate support.

Comment by Larry Miskowicz

The primary responsibility of a President is to make sure this country and it’s citizens are safe from harm. The democratic candidates are treating the subject of the problems of the Middle East as if the kitchen sink backed up. I have heard no strength of character from either Dem. Candidate!

For the first time in my life and with this fear, I am voting Republican!

Comment by Bob Cavaliere

Rove is a disgusting human being. How McCain could ask for the advise from someone who basically called this true American hero unpatriotic in the South Carolina primaries in 2000 is strictly polotics at its worst. He is a chicken hawk like Cheney, Wolfiwitz and Bremer. He lies cheats and distorts. Why McCain would allow him to help causes me to doubt my support for him. Please kick him to the low curb he has so earned.

Comment by Sally

If McCain wants to stay on “The Straight talk Express” he should avoid having Karl Rove playing any part in his campaign. Rove represents what’s wrong with politics and what has been wrong with politics since 1988 when Lee Atwater was dealing out advice.

Comment by Jeff Buuck

I just can’t believe that Karl Rove would stoop so low as to help this man who has nothing but contempt for the Republican party. McCain hates conservatives and Christians, why would Karl Rove be interested in seeing him do well?

Karl Rove is an excellent to have on his campaign trail. All these folks that dislike Rove are basically liberals. So just count them out. Rove will get the resources and people power to get McCain the Seat.

Comment by Jim

I am a lifelong Democrat and love this country. My candidates are weak from every angle. I was a supporter of Joe Biden, because he knows defense issues. Since McCain is not a hard line right kind of guy, he is going to be my choice this year. He is a patriot and helps vets, which is more than enough for me.

Comment by Zilana

ROVE?? Considering his reputation for dirty tricks, I guess we’re in for another nauseating campaign of personal attacks at their very lowest possible form. GOP must be desperate.

Comment by Stella

Do I see the making of a VP candidate here?

The GOP is split down the middle between conservatives and moderates. John McCain will need a conservative VP running mate to garner more right-wing support that he will need to win in November.

Comment by Duane McLean

I don’t personally like Karl Rove however I can’t blame McCain from taking his advise or his money. I would however caution him not to allign himself too closely with rove as he enters the general election phase of his campaign, as he is a lightning rod for criticism from the the very independants and moderates that he will need support from if he has any hope of winning the Presidency.

Comment by Michael Elliott

Why can’t you McCain supporters just “calm down” :) and “unite” around all the political people, like Karl Rove, needed to win the election?

After all, if it’s “for the good of the party” or “for the good of the country” you should embrace him, right? After all, it’s ok to compromise what you believe in as long as you beat Hillary, right?

I mean, if foreign governments or felons starting giving money to the McCain campaign to put him over the top, wouldn’t you take that money, you know…for the good of the party??? :)

You see, when you start down the “lesser of two evils” path, you STILL END UP WITH EVIL!

Go Huckabee 2008!

Comment by John Bates

John McCain needs the conservative support in his party to win the nomination without splitting the Republican party in two. He should select Huckabee as his running mate before the Texas and Ohio primaries.

Comment by cobra

McCain is a liberal democrat, I will not be voting for him if he wins the nomination. McCain has a bad temper and that is not needed when dealing with other governments. Second he is to old for the job, he will not have the stamina that it takes to run the government.

Comment by nick robbertt

Shocking. To think that McCain would team up with the one of the single strongest driving force that removed him from the GOP nomination in 2000.

Rove is smart, cunning, and orchestrated two presidential, but at what price. Its a matter of dignity. If some one suggested that I had a black extra-marital baby… the friendship lines are immediatly cut.

Comment by eric fisher

I could never vote for J. McCain. I have voted Republican for the last 2 election cycles, but let’s call a spade a spade and a RINO a RINO. I’ll vote Dem. or not vote at all. At least the Dems are straight talking that they are Liberal, John is is in their bed and trying to sell us out. Who cares who his V.P. nominee is? He will sell us all down the river. Vote Obama and maybe change will happen!

Comment by Eliza

If conservatives keep attacking Mc Cain everyday and backing Huckabee, who does not stand the slightest chance of winining the republican nomination, well then we can embrace for at leat four years of Hillary or worse, Obama. So stop looking at your own belly, and back Mc Cain once and for all, this is soooo obvious.

Comment by RedShirt

Rove is a disgusting human being ? Dirty tricks ?? Rove represents what’s wrong with politics ???

Concerns about Rove’s character are irrelevant. This is hardball presidential politics and results are the only litmus test. If Hillary or Obama, mired in a bitter dead heat with no end in sight, could hire Rove or someone just as slimey-but-effective they’d do it in a flash. Note that longtime Obama fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko* was recently indicted on charges of fraud, extortion and money laundering. The Obama campaign last month donated a $40k Rezko campaign donation to charity but that’s only because this became public.

* Is there any doubt that Clinton operatives are digging up dirt on the Obama-Rezko relationship for potential negative attacks down the stretch ? Only Rove and GOP henchman do that ? Think again.

Comment by Doug

As a conservative, I have my reservations about John McCain. However, as it appears he will be the candidate for the Republican party, I will be backing him. I believe McCain will follow President Bush’ lead in the war on terror and that is the single most important issue of our time. Despite President Bush’ low approval ratings (due in large part to liberal mainstream media), I believe he was an excellent President. He has executed the war on terror by putting the terrorists on the defensive. I believe history will show the war in Iraq to be a crucial success as part of the war on terror. Neither of the Dems have what it takes to continue this war and protect the U.S. - Vote McCain.

Comment by Sal

Good gravy! McCain said he would accept advise, not a date! If Mr. Rove can help us win let him say what he has to say. John is not bound to follow advise from any one. I agree JM isn’t my first choice either, but does ya like them Dem’s better? I don’t. I don’t want to live under socialism. And if anyone of any party wants to pay more taxes, go right ahead. Mine are high enough, but thank you for thinking of me. Politics is a street fight now. And it’ll get a lot more down and dirty. It’s only February fight fans, 9 more months of mud wrestling left. Within the law we (R) must do what it takes to win. If Carl Rove can help let him.

McCain is fortunate to have someone of Karl Rove’s stature, talent, experience and historic political know how willing to support him. Taking advantage of his expertise would indicate wisdom on McCain’s part.

Go Huckabee Go!!!!

Comment by Jacqueline

Since, I think Huckabee has got some momentum, McCain is going to need Rove’s advice to help him make it to the finish line. As Rove said on FOX, McCain needs 40% of the rest of the deligates. What happens if He CAN’T get it? Does it go to the Convention??? Need I state the obvious?Huckabee slam dunked Kansas! And I think there is more of that to come…..

It doesn’t surprise me to hear that some demorats will vote for McCain. He’s one of them. This may be the first election that I sit out. I will no longer vote for someone that claims to be a conservative when they need our votes but forgets us as soon as elected. I really believe it is time for a new consevative party to be formed. Let the demorats have control. Their policies will fail as they always do and peope will want a change. Without the consevative wing of the party, the Republican party is done. The window of opportunty will open for a new party. That’s what this contry needs.

BILL BUETOW,

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF, LIKE YOU I READ HISTORY. MILES COPLAND FROM THE GAME OF NATIONS WOULD AGREE. IT COVERED THE MIDEAST FROM 1947 THROUGH THE 6 DAY WAR IN 1967. THERE THEY WERE OUR ALLIES TOO, AND THE ASSAULT ON THE LIBERTY, KILLED MANY AMERICAN’S AND MERCHANT MARINE SAILORS. IN THE OPENING OF THE ISREAL WAR FOR THE WEST BANK.
NOW WE LIVE WITH THE CONSEQUENCES. SO GOES OSAMA AND AFGANISTAN, AND WE AGAIN LIVE WITH THE CONSEQUENCES,

SO LIKE YOU SOME OF THE PEOPLE GET IT, SOME DON’T. WHAT WE HAVE TO DO IS TRY TO GET THE INFORMATION OUT THERE. SEEMS THEY WILL COMPLAIN, IF WE EXPLAIN, AND IF WE DON’T GIVE THEM FACTS TO BACK THEM UP TOO. NOT THE TRUTH, OF HISTORY. SO ROUND AND ROUND AGAIN. YOUR GUESS ON THE NEXT MOVE, CHESS ANYONE?

NEXT BLOG?

END TRANS.

The best advice I can give you John is to humble yourself and take the vice president job and select a running mate to run for President. You can still handle the war on terror from the VP job. WE THE PEOPLE would have a lot more respect for you and it would be for the good of this great nation.

I “have” to address this “conservative” smokescreen issue people are having with McCain. Most far right conservatives hold President Reagan high on their pedestals, as he should be he was a great President BUT if he were running today he would be receiving the same slaughtering McCain finds himself in with conservatives. After all, Ronald Reagan was NOT a true conservative BEFORE he became president, thank God we all gave him a chance! Where was the conservative outrage when he got the nomination? Another fact…he raised taxes 7 of the 8 years he was President and signed an “amnesty bill” so the “true conservative” argument really rings hollow to me. Is President Bush a liberal democrat as well since he was in full support of McCain/Kennedy AND spending has been out of control on his watch! Who REALLY fits the definition of a “true conservative”, not Ronald Reagan, not President Bush……..find another argument because the “true conservative” argument you are trying so hard to cram down our throats is BASELESS. Grow up, be men and women and quit throwing your TANTREMS!

My number one issue in supporting and voting for President of the United States of America is this - who is going to continue to go head to head with the terrorists in defending our public aviation transportation, rail, and other vulnerable points including getting them at the border, the station, the airport, and hopefully busting the cells by surveillance before they ever get to the point of carrying out the tragic event. When you have kids traveling to go to college via train and/or airplane, and you travel by air for a living, this is the bottom line. We have got to have a leader who supports the financial and policy infrastructure of surveillance and the highest level of transportation and venue security possible. The Fed and Stock Exhanges can waiver up and down all day long, you can lose your home to foreclosure, your job or a contract BUT if you lose a loved one or your life from a needless act of terrorism that could have been prevented, your life is forever saddened with grief and loss from which you cannot fully recover. I know that George W. Bush has done whatever possible he could during his tenure to fight the war on terror, and I want the next President to continue to focus on this issue.

This is so funny. The chickens are coming home to roost for John “Maverick” McCain.
The man with very little party loyalty, now wants the Conservatives he gave the finger to on Immigration to back him.

Ha ha ha ha.

Next he loses Louisiana.

Comment by Sally

Few people understand why McCain is doing so well despite the non-support of Limbaugh, Coulter etc. It’s because people are tired of the polarization. These people have made a lot of money with their schtick. McCain has shown an inclination not to go along with the game plan and that’s the problem for the talking heads. McCain is popular precisely because of this. With the addition of Rove this could signal to the moderates that McCain is turning to the tactics of division and he risks losing the moderates. Rove has done what was asked of him and serviced his employers well but the times they are a changin’.

I think McCain should steer clear of Killer Karl Rove, he is the original “evil doer”

McCain….you are going to need more than Karl Rove’s advice and wallet!

What you need to do is retract all the liberal programs that have been presented by you as well as the McCain Feingold act which whittles away YOUR constituents’ Freedoms”…

You have to renounce these….all of them, including amnesty for law breaking illegals….you can’t take an oath of office as Presiden twith hand on the Bible that says you will uphold the laws of our land and then turn around and give every lawbreaker who has illegally crossed our border a freebee and a piece of our failing Social Security Sysem’s pie…..that is already broken and gone in a few years…..as well as free Medicare….have you heard? We are closing Hospitals due to lawbreakers like these…but this will be the Grandaddy of them all!!!

We as American Citizens will be denied our Sovereign rights under your Presidency with this law breaking act….

yes….you will need a lot more if you are to receive anyone’s conservative vote!
WE might as well take our chances with an Obama….at least he hasn’t lied about what it is he will do! signed….A patriot and a proud American!!!.

DO NOT VOTE. The big picture is McCain has more character, fortitude, patriotism and analytical ability than anyone the Dems could ever dream about, much less nominate.

Try graduating from the US Naval Academy, surviving the USS Forrestal catastrophe and flying off the USS Oriskany to spend 5.5 years in the Hanoi Hilton. Revered by his comrades and fellow prisoners, McCain, who graduated 5th from the bottom of the class of USNA 1958, rose to the top as evidenced by countless testimonials to his Naval career and political record.

Think about those years in captivity and ~ half of those in solitary confinement. John had a LOT of time to think about America and he has a plan. John McCain, with ~50 years service to our country should be our next PRESIDENT & COMMANDER IN CHIEF. For those that think he is too old, check out his mother, Roberta, age 95. She is Ms AARP hands down.

I dont even think this story is worthy of a headline, he is not about to appoint him to any position if he does get in the white house. Rove is a brilliant political mind, anyone who didnt take his advice would be a fool!

Comment by Rod Venger

McCain’s request for help from Rove is probably the nail in his campaign’s coffin. It’s bad enough that he’s a wimp when it comes to illegals, but half of all conservatives felt Rove should have gone 3 years ago. McCain will lose the conservative GOP vote over this. -Rod-

Comment by Sonya

Nothing will be important if America and the West loose this WW4 against radical Islam. Both Obama and Clinton will not even try to fight. Right now McCain is our last best hope.

Comment by Sonya

And the last but not the least. Talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh who now say that 4 or 8 years of Hillary or Obama would bring somebody like Reagan later cannot be sure that the USA will survive these years without fighting our mortal enemies, but there is one thing that Rush can be pretty sure if he tries to put his emotions aside: He himself most definitely will not survive these years as conservative and popular talk show host. With Democratic Congress and several more young liberal Justices on Supreme Court both Hillary and Obama will implement so-called “Fairness Doctrine” even before they retreat in Iraq, and bring new 9/11 to America.

Comment by Gwen Spivey

Great comment Charlie Hunter! Sally is dead on too!
I think John McCain should not change anything about himself. His voting record is Republican and he appeals to a broader picture than the “RIGHT WING CONSERVATIVE ZEALOTS” will ever appeal to. Personally I think people like Rush,Sean, Ann, Laura, Dr. Dobson should all keep their mouths shut. If John McCain gets the nomination taken by the likes of Huckabee, I will be voting Obama (I have been a moderate Republican for 21 years and am tired of the Far Right causing so much hatred) .

Go McCain!!!!

I couldn’t even watch Fox coverage of the elections between 8-10 because Sean Hannity makes me want to throw up! Alan Colmes actually has more positive things to say about McCain, something is wrong with that picture.

Comment by RedShirt

I’d like to elect a conservative Republican in 2008 but consider this. After 8 years of Bush we’re just not going to get an ideological conservative in the Whitehouse this time around. The pendulum and all that. This election calls on conservatives to be a little bit pragmatic. McCain is the best we’re going to get. Perhaps after 4 years of Obama that could change but Romney and Huckabee, as much as I like them, won’t beat the Dem contender this election cycle.

Comment by Ad Nauseum

I’m a lifelong Democrat, and I can assure you your GOP candidate will be McCain. In the end, all the rabid extreme right wingers will take a chill pill and get behind him. They are losing sight of the big picture - they do want to WIN the Whitehouse, don’t they? However, if he’s going to use Rove for a consultant, he might as well take some paint and block out the “Straight Talk Express” on his bus - Rove is a master of lies and deceit, to put it mildly.

I am not happy with either of the Democratic candidates. Bill Richardson and Joe Biden know more about what really matters to our country than Hillary and Barack combined. Why neither of them got much support is beyond me. I am still angry and disappointed that Al Gore refused to become a candidate. With his recent achievements and his international standing, not to mention his contribution to solving the global warming problem, he would have generated lots of support.

It will be interesting to see how Rove figures out how to smear Hillary or Barack without looking like a sexist or a racist. Settle in, kiddies, it’s going to be a long bumpy ride to November!

Comment by J Bishop

Dear Romney supporters;
Didn’t Mitt say we should come together and vote Republican for the good of the country. He dropped out for that reason so we could unite behind the GOP. Regarding bigortry, lots of evangelicals voted for Romney but hardly any LDS voted for Huckabee (or McCain for that matter) just look at the Utah primary numbers. Your right there is a lot of bigortry but on which side?

Comment by J Lee

Karl Rove, Mike Huckabee, and the memory Ronald Regan won’t be enought to save McCain. He is just not smart enough to win the Presidency. Obama will dance CIRCLES around McCain in the debates. All Obama has to do to win is simple back off on aggresive Iraq troop withdrawal. That will SINK McCain’s run, pretty much flushing it down the toilet.

Comment by C. Huber

I KNEW there was a reasson Rove stepped down when he did…put a little time between, stay low profile, and then….go work for Bush’s heir-apparent….so that Bush can see his faorite concerns be realized……
1. AMENSTY and millions of Hispanics become ciitizens BEFORE the ones workng through the system LEGALLY and COSTLY…beign thwarted at every turn!
2. Keep the war in Iraq going for as long as they can and occupy that HUGE Embassy etc.
3. Get social security tied in to the “market” and persoanl investment…and we ALL know where that has just gone! :)
Well, IF McCain takes help from Rove, he will have the most cunning, vicious, devious, brilliant, and brutal! campaign manager/strategist I have ever unfortunately observed. Rove will stop at NOTHING and come to think of it…that will probably suit McCain just fine.
I am from AZ and have NO regard for McCain AT ALL. He IS a maverick and never intended to SERVE anyone other than John McCain! He certainly did NOT serve the Republican base and conservatives here in AZ EVER!

Comment by J Lee

I agree the Condi Rice is a good choice for VP, but McCain has no other choice right now, other then Mike Huckabee. Without Huckabee McCain can’t lock up the evagelical base that moves in lock step to their pastors, who in turn move in lockstep of Huckabee’s campaign. Mike Huckabee knows what he is doing.
Huckabee will go to McCain, who may or may not lock up the nomination in delegates and say, If you want the evangelalical base you make me V.P. Otherwise, Huckabee has plenty of of dirt on McCain as well to sink his presidency. i.e. Make sure every envangelical know McCain divorced his cripled wife to go to greener pastuers, that will pretty much keep the evangelalical vote home.

Somebody above posted that McCain should elect a conservative VP. I definately agree. Perhaps Romney or Huckabee would be a great possibility. A perfect balance, I’d say.

The Republican party is heading for disaster. You did not see Democrats change their core values as ludicrious as they are after they got their butts handed to them in 04′. Why did we? Until we get back to our core values of securing our borders, language, and culture is when we will gain control of both houses of congress and the presidency. As much as the republican establishment has moved left, it may never happen again. I feel there should be no parties and should elect a man or women based on their record and plans for future policy. I guarantee you our economy would be up and our congress would actually get the necessary things done. If there has to be a party system, then there has to be a third party called the ” American” party.

Comment by Victor

McCain doesn’t need a conservative VP. He’s got the Rep nomination just about sewn up, and he can win the general election by just appealing to moderates in BOTH parties. I’m hoping for a McCain/Giuliani ticket.

Comment by PW

I smell a rat and it’s name is Karl. This is nothing more than a very thinly-veiled plea from McCain (in code, no less) for Rove to “dig up some dirt” on whoever the front-running Democratic candidate will be so that when McCain’s numbers begin to tank (and they will) he can “leak” whatever slime Rove comes up with during his “fact-finding” mission. Same old dirty Republican politics…as usual!!!

Comment by George de Crawford

The way to run the Cult Leader off the stage, and blunt the argument of gender and race, would be for McCain to tap Dr. Rice as his running mate.

Comment by J.J. Davis

Mccain is no less of a conservative than Ronald Reagan, they shared similar positions on taxes, spending, and imigration. Ronald Reagan raised taxes 7 out of his 8 years in office, granted amnesty to three million illegals, and appointed two liberals to the supreme court.

Comment by Roger

Rove can steer McCain ‘hard to the starboard side’ for the good of the Republican Party. If not, Hill or O-Bomb-A-Allie will win and take this great country down the wrong road like Ted Kennedy on a dark Chappaquidick night. So, Super-Rove can save both the GOP and the USA in one move. God bless Karl Rove!

Comment by Eric P

Just because McCain hasn’t declared Jesus his hero like Bush did (brilliantly) in 2000, doesn’t mean he’s not conservative or wouldn’t appoint proper judges to the bench. His record indicates he’s voted conservative 84% of the time through the years. He has a realistic approach to immigration (deporting 12 million not possible). He thinks spending is out of control and introduced bipartisan legislation for it. At least he follows through with what he believes in unlike Hillary (Iraq).

Comment by John Allen

McCain needs Rove, because he doesn’t have the nomination yet. He is scared to death of Huckabee. We still have a chance. Conservatives can still get Huckabee the Republican nomination. And Democrats, be they for Clinton or Obama, if you would rather see the Republican race drawn out, if you think Mike Huckabee would easier to defeat in the General Election, you too can contribute to his campaign. If you hate Karl Rove, donate to Huckabee campaign. McCain won at most, only 1 of 3 states today and we will not know if he won any until at least tomorrow.

Comment by Eric P

Mathematically, Huckabee cannot win this nomination. But God Bless him for staying in there and being a renegade, snatching up primaries with little money and a big heart. His Southern roots would really help a McCain in the Bible Belt.

Beware of commentors who proclaim to be Republicans who say they will vote for a Dem. They’re really Dems with alterior motives trying to ‘con’ people into believing their lies.

One such person claimed that Reagan wasn’t a conservative due to granting Amnesty ( not true; a liberal distortion of the facts, selectively reporting only a part of the entire reform package enacted but not implemented due to incomplete funding by Congress ) and raising taxes ( tax DOLLARS were increased by LOWERING the RATES, thus INCREASING productivity and investments by businesses no longer burdened by punitive taxes ).

I think that some of the conservative discontent with Sen. McCain will pale in comparison to what’s going to happen on the Democrat side when (surprise!) the majority Clinton Michigan and Florida delegations are seated at their convention.

In my view, McCain needs a conservative running mate from outside of Washington, who’s younger than McCain. I think that Gov. Huckabee is the best fit for this; he can get votes that McCain would truly struggle for; Huckabee seems to have more of punch at the ballot box than Gov. Romney.
