McCain looks to unify GOP, plans to meet with Romney
done
Seattle, WA – One day after his chief rival for the GOP nomination dropped out, Sen. John McCain said among his priorities is now unifying a divided Republican party.
“We are very aware that there is some unification of the party that has to take place,” McCain said during a media availability on his plane Friday.
While the presumptive GOP nominee said he will continue his effort to outreach to party conservatives, some of whom remain skeptical about his record and credentials, McCain said he will not limit his message to the right in the coming months.
“I am trying to appeal to everyone in the party. I recognize that it is going to take a united and energized Republican party, all aspects of it, if we are going to have a chance to win the election in November,” he said, adding he also will look to attract “liberal Republicans” who supported Rudy Giuliani and even anti-war Republicans. “The formula for success in most campaigns is your base, independents and Reagan Democrats.”
McCain said he is looking to meet with Mitt Romney in the next week to discuss ways to help unite the party, noting that his former rival received more than 4 million votes in the early primary states. The Arizona senator also said he understood that it will take weeks, if not months before the party can regroup–based on his memories from his failed 2000 bid for the nomination.”
“After 2000, there were many McCainiacs that were very angry and bitter…a lot of people were bitter because when you invest your hard work and your effort and your passion to a candidate, you understand that there is a period there where you got to unify people and get them to recognize what the major goal is,” McCain said. “Primaries are tough. Primaries in some ways, as you well know, are tougher emotionally than a general election because of the nature of them and the personalization.”

The facts:
If Mitt drops out his pleged delagates can vote for someone else;
If Mitt suspendes his campain his delgates are still suposed to vote Romney at convention;
It is un-american to freeze these delgates from supporting the “other” conservate Mitt. Shame on you. I think he really is bailing so McCain will make him VP instead of Mike Huckabee if he had stayed in race.
Mitt is an oppurtunstic flip-floper and has now flip from his conservitive base just to try to save face for the VP slot.
All you former Romney donors and voters screaming for him to formally drop out so you can now support Huck and the delgates can vote for the remaining conservative at the convention.
Drop out Romney don’t suspend your campain. If McCain picks Romney for VP I’m going dem the election as protest. I will vote Huckabee/Romney however or McCain/Huckabee. Romney was looking out for his political fortunes as VP by droping out as he always has.
Like when he switched his social stances two weeks before leaving the Governor postion. For abortion than against;
For gun control than against;
For secret timetables than against;
Against that “Reagan thing” than run like he’s Reagan;
Was a horrible Governer if you really look at his record as he raised Fees by 700 million;
Enacted a mandate health care system in Massacutes like Hillary Clintion wants for US;
His health care system pays for abortions;
Mitt is not doing this “for good of Country” his doing it to try to get VP slot. If he stayed in Huckabee would be the shoe-in for VP. As McCain and Huckbee now fight for nomination McCain would opt for Romney to knock out the Huckabee from getting it.
Mitt drop out and don’t suspend your campain and say you won’t be McCains VP then you will really be doing the conservative base and “right thing for the Country” and prove yourself to me.
Romney did not suspend his campaign to freeze the delegates, he suspended the campaign so he can still legally get donations, for future campaigns.
Huckabee is dumb as rope. If McCain has any sense, he’ll pick Romney for VP.
Huckabee has 14 ethical violations - see Judicial Watch (non partisan, non profit group) which named him in the top 10 corrupt Politicians. Romney may have raised some user fees, but still raised taxes less than the Huck. Huck can continue to say he is still in the race, but he will never get the delgates he needs. Who is he kidding and why is he still here? PS. Romney is clean as a whistle at Judical Watch, do the search, not one of the other candidates (Dem or Rep) is>>>>
Thomas Bell,
The “Good” of the country???? Shame on you! That would not have John McCain in it! He is no good for the GOP and our Country!! Romney was the best choice from the beginning!!!! Huck and McCain are both cheaters!! And you all know it! John McCain…Good luck trying to unite the Party…with your background it will be a mess!
Our biggest problem in American politics is not the quality of the candidates. I believe it is the quality and more importantly the quantity of voters. After the end of the Vietnam war, close to 90% of the eligible voters went to the polls, despite the very real threat often carried out of murder and maiming of innocent children by the communists. In Iraq nearly 90% voted in the elections post Saddam, despite the very real threat of being blown up by terrorists. I have to laugh at anyone who thinks freedom and agency are not engrained in the heart and soul of every human being. It is only throught man’s inhumanity to man and the greed of a few evil men that freedom becomes distorted until war and terror seem to be the default condition of man. What more proof do you need?
In America, and even in my home state of Utah, we call it an amazing turnout at the polls when we get 30% of the eligible voters to show up for the presidential primary. As long as we care more about worthless entertainment, our comfort and convenience than we do our civic responsibility to preserve our freedom and protect our families by excercising our right to vote, special interests and the mainstream media will control the show, with self interest, greed and a failure to assume social responsibility. Of those who do vote, few vote based on well reasoned criteria and well grounded assessments.
If the Constitution is one day hanging by a thread, and our moral and family values are all but vanquised in the hearts of Americans, we have only ourselves to blame, for our failure to take resposibility for our lives and our collective futures. As more and more children have to grow up in a filthy environment of porn, drugs and crime, without both a father and a mother, without an education to compete in an increasingly competitive world, will we wake up before it is too late?
Thomas Bell is a diehard Huck fan. Who is Huckabee anyway? Who are his parents? Who are his kids? How many? Did he solve any major crisis? How, where, when, what? Aside from being a Baptist minister, what does he do? How does he make a living? Aside from religion, what can he do best? Can he unify all the different religions, factions etc as a President of the US? If he really is the choice of millions of Americans how come he is always third or fourth in the election returns when Gov. Romney was still campaigning? WHere does he get his numbers showing that the Presidential race and between him and Sen. McCain? Is he fantasizing or really out of touch with what he is doing?

Sorry Johnny. I’m not buying it. I’m voting Obama.
Mitt in ‘12!!!
I don’t mind Huckabee’s supporters propping him up and supporting him but can those among them who feel the need to do so while bashing Romney or Thompson please stop their bashing. (Please understand that I’m not saying that all Huckabee supporters bash Romney or Thompson. The request is just for those who are bashing) Both Romney and Thompson are out of the race.
Add to the Huckaphony’s already sordid and corrupt past, now the news media is questioning Huckster’s judgement and character, because of his association with the televangelist Kenneth Copeland, who has refused to cooperate with a Senate investigation into his ministry’s finances, and Copeland donated a large sum of money to Huckster. Huckster spent the night at Copeland’s 18,000 sq. foot waterfront house. Hmmmm, where did Copeland get all that money to buy a house like that?
The dirt just keeps coming out on the SCARY AND CORRUPT MIKE HUCKSTER!

Caroline following is info on Huck’s son Davd from Mike Huckabee’s Skeleton Closet
http://www.realchange.org/huckabee.htm
His Son Tortured and Hung a Dog. Huckabee Covered It Up.
Back in 1998, when Huckabee was Arkansas governor, his son David and David’s friend Clayton Frady were fired from jobs at a Boy Scout camp. Why? Because they hung a stray dog by its neck, slit its throat and stoned it to death. (This same son was convicted in 2007 for bringing a loaded .40 Glock handgun and a 9-round clip through airport security. He was also Homecoming King at Arkansas State.)
When word got out about the dog lynching back in 1998, the local prosecutor wrote the head of the State Police asking for help in an investigation. The head of the state police then, John Bailey, recently told NEWSWEEK that Governor Huckabee’s chief of staff and his personal lawyer both leaned on him to officially deny the local prosecutor’s request. Bailey said he viewed the lawyer’s pressure as improper and cut off the conversation. Seven months later, he was called into Huckabee’s office and fired. “I’ve lost confidence in your ability to do your job,” Bailey says Huckabee told him. “I couldn’t get you to help me with my son when I had that problem.”
I. C. Smith, the former FBI chief in Little Rock, said “Without question, [Huckabee] was making a conscious attempt to keep the state police from investigating his son.” He also says he worked closely with Bailey and called Bailey a “courageous” and “very solid” professional.
Prosecuting Attorney Tim Williamson of Mena, Arkansas said cruelty to animals is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail.
Mike Huckabee told Newsweek that Bailey’s charges were “untrue”, but his Chief of Staff and lawyer at the time both admit they talked to Bailey about the dog killing.
If Mike Huckabee had made racial comments about a leading black candidate or sexist comments about a leading female candidate, he would have been castigated by the media. How he was able to topple Romney’s campaign with religious bigotry is dumbfounding to me. It seems that everyone is oblivious to the obvious.
Now that Mitt Romney is out of the race for the GOP nomination, history will show that Mike Huckabee pulled off the political crime of the century. It was Mike Huckabee that raised religious issues among Iowa evangelicals by comments toward Romney’s religion.
As Huckabee’s tactics started to show in the Iowa polls, Mitt responded with his “Faith in America” speech. Romney was then forced to work on damage control. Romney’s efforts in Iowa payed off and he continued to rise back in the polls but the damage gave him a second in a state he held firmly until Huckabee’s misuse of the public forum.
McCain saw his window and concentrated on New Hampshire while Romney was being unduly “occupied” in Iowa. Romney was forced to agressively address things detracting from what his positive messaging had been and did so famously. Romney then relied on comparison ads to contrast differences. These ads were constantly referred to as “attack ads” by Huckabee, who continually portrayed him as “desperate”, and “attacking”.
Then Huckabee, and John McCain for that matter, was able to capitalize on such tactics. Because of Huckabee’s misleading of the majority evangelical state of Iowa and with the ignorance of the media toward the Mormon religion, he flew under the radar of a nation that has worked since Lincoln to erase such bigotry.
A majority of the nation now sees only that Mike Huckabee won the Iowa caucus and that John McCain began his comeback by winning the New Hampshire primary yet know nothing of the back story. I think it important to present it. Observe for yourself and pass these perspectives along. America was robbed of a president that would have been a TRUE man for change with a proven record of turning things around in the oval office.
“What would have been…” is how this campaign will be characterized. Stories will be told without the media and dirty political agendas and America will come to know the authenticity and integrity of Mitt Romney. My only hope is that he finds the determination to try again in four years.
I concur with Kelly’s accurate analysis. The press further facilitated Huckabee’s devious ploy because he plays so well into the MSM’s desire for a foolish looking GOP nominee (or VP nominee) who they will fully expose after the GOP selection is finalized. Romney is smart, articulate and presidential. The MSM could not tolerate that. They want a democrat back in the White House.
All Huckabee supporters please read this. I’M SOFA KING WE TODD DID!! Thats right! Say it again.
I’M SOFA KING WE TODD DID!! Much better! Try it one more time. I’M SOFA KING WE TODD DID!!
Probably the first correct thing you’ve said in a long time:)
Thomas Bell:
Shut up!!
To: Southron
Huckabee is not just dumber than rope he is dumber than “Balam’s Ass”.
I’m sure as a preacher he is familiar with the biblical story. This stubborness only shows his true Jack Ass nature and just how well he looks and fits the democrate mascot and symbol.
He and McCain would never be able to come together on a ticket because they could never agree on which was going to be the “Jack” and which was going to be the “Jenny”
Huckabee fans,
Can somebody please explain to me how his “fair tax” will not totally destroy our economy? Since Huck said he didn’t major in math, I’m assuming that he didn’t major in economics as well. His national sales tax is a regressive tax. Let me put that in simple terms for the Huck supporters. A regressive tax is one that puts you in a higher tax bracket if you make less money. Think about it, poorer people will spend a greater proportion of their income. They have no choice, they have to spend it to buy the things they need to survive.
The middle class and wealthy, however, will only be taxed on what we purchase. So, if we want to be taxed less, we buy less stuff. I would definitely think twice about buying something if it had a 23% sales tax. If the American people were stupid enough to elect Huck (I doubt they’re that stupid), then I would try to minimize my spending as much as possible. We’d just save our money until the next president came in and fixed Huck’s problems. When nobody is spending money, the economy will suffer. But I guess we don’t need to be smart; If we have a president who knows how to eat fried chicken we should be entitled to miracles.
Message for Thomas Bell…What Planet are you from and please go back to your people.
Suspending the campaign allows someone to continue to pay for future races. Romney got shafted by the liberal media and couldn’t fight or (chose not to) the dirty politics of both McCain and Huckabee. Romney left the race so that the GOP might find common ground, something that Huckabee should also do.
I can’t stand McCain, but I abhor Huckabee. He is a Bigot and thinks he can hide behind his uh-shuckes persona. Huckabee is the one wanting the VP spot. God help us if the best we can do for the GOP is a RINO/BIGOT ticket for 2008.
The GOP focus needs to be on how to stop the DEM duo of Bilary/Obamanation from steam rolling over the American people.
One of the the DEMS that is currently running will win the White House be it McCain, Bilarry or Obama.
Conservatives need to step up to the plate and not throw in the towel because you don’t trust McCain. Remember that the Supreme Court will probably have members retire in the next 4 years, so even if you hate McCain, the GOP might have a bit more influence over his selections than the two liberal senators from NY and IL.
As an American I have the privilege to vote, and I can not hit the switch for another Clinton White House, or the side kick Senator from IL. Both of these spell bigger trouble for the U.S.
I don’t buy it, Anne. Obama is smart enough to be a more centrist Democrat. In example, at first he was supporting something similar to HillaryCare, but he has since seen that such a plan is not feasible, so he adopted an idea more similar to what Mitt Romney did in Massachusetts. Obama will not withdraw from Iraq when he gets a good Cabinet together and they advise him against it. He listens to experts, I believe, and he has shown that he can truly work for bipartisanship. We need to send a message to the GOP that if it sends us a crap candidate like John McCain, we will reject him in favor of a more centrist Democrat. McCain may be more conservative on some important issues (i.e., abortion), but sometimes a more important litmus test is honesty, not one’s view on abortion, and the Straight Talk Express is more of a loose cannon. We need to elect Obama so we can try for Romney again in 2012, if he chooses to run then, as I suspect he will.
Democrats will win the 2008 election for sure! Who would vote for failed Republicans and old McCain? I’m sooo glad that Romney ended his campaign on high.
ROMNEY for 2012! Greetings from MONGOLIA!
Romney had the support of the base and talk radio which a lot of the base respect and listen to. Romney was the most qualified candidate that we have had run in a long time. He received over 4 million votes. McCain received 4.7 million. Huckabee was less than a third of that. McCain needs Romney as VP to unite the party. He also needs Romney’s economic skills. I do hope to see Romney run for President in 2012.
Hope Romney will not ruin his 2012 bid. Running with McCain will happen in our dreams at night!
Its easy to hate Its harder to forgive, I hope we can come togather for the good of this great country. Just a thought that keeps going through my mind If Mitt thinks he’s the best man to be President Why quit? Mike has proven you can run a race and not spend a kings ransom if your message is the right one.
Mr. McCain, I could have voted for you until you became drenched in dishonest rhetoric and political mudslinging. Since Romney left, Obama is the only candidate without the stain of hate and selfishness. It will be the first time in my life of 57 years that I will vote Democrat.
Kelly, you have millions who agree with you. Huck’s bigotry sticks out like a big, infected pimple on his face, religious based, and hypocritical. Teach kids on the playground to be nice to all the other kids, black, white, rich, poor, and then give them a future created by bigotry! That just doesn’t make sense to me.
I wonder what Romney knows that we do not know. He certainly wasn’t “suspending his campaign” because he was loosing. Maybe he knows the presidency has already been bought. Remember, we don’t select the president. We take off work, drive thru the snow and rain to stand in line to vote but those votes are like kids asking for ice-cream. “We’ll see”.
From my perpective if McCain becomes President, Mitt Momney would be the wisest choce for Vice-President. The balance would enhance the chance for an improved adminstration.
Huckabee Evangelicals will go down in history as the reason for the election of a Democratic President in November and the disaffection of western Republicans from the party, e.g. Mormons in the west who are the Republican base. Good job Evangelicals!
Next you will want to withdraw from the union and renew slavery. Put your teeth back in and read the constitution. The whole point of America was to stop tyranny and protect the rights of men and women to believe as they desired. I don’t want a preacher for my President. I want an executive who will respect the views of all and advance the COMMON GOOD, not the uncommon, bigoted, narrow-minded, and exclusionary minority.
Here’s a news flash: Christ would not have done what you have done, e.g., lied about another’s beliefs, hated your brother, slandered an honest man — all for gain. Huckabee and his Evangelicals can vote their religion all they want, but they may want to consider being truthful and honest along the way if they want to LIVE their religion.
I AM A STRONG MITT ROMNEY SUPPORTER. I WAS ANGERED BY THE UNDERHANDED, DISHONEST TACTICS OF BOTH MR. MCCAIN AND MR. HUCKABEE. MR. HUCKABEE’S NEWS CONFERENCE TO ANNOUNCE THE NEGATIVE THINGS HE WAS NOT GOING TO SAY ABOUT MITT ROMNEY WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS A TYPICAL HOLIER THAN THOU, TACTIC COMPARABLE TO THOSE JEWS WHO PUT CHRIST TO DEATH. MR. MCCAIN’S BLATENT LIES ABOUT MITT ROMNEY’S POSITION ON HAVING A TIMETABLE FOR WITHDRAWL FROM IRAQ WERE CLINTONESQUE. HAVE WE NO HONOR? VOTING AGAINST MITT ROMNEY BECAUSE HE IS A MORMON IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR COUNTRY.
HOWEVER, THOUGH I VOWED TO NOT VOTE FOR MR. MCCAIN, AFTER MITT’S SPEECH AT CPAC I HAVE DECIDED TO CHANGE MY MIND. MR. OBAMA MAY BE A GOOD MAN, BUT PULLING OUR TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ WILL CAUSE THE ISLAMIC JIHADIST’S TO WIN. IRAN WILL WIN. IRAN AND HEZBOLAH WILL KEEP ATTACKING ISREAL. AMERICA WILL ALSO BE ATTACKED. WE MUST NOT, WE CAN NOT VOTE FOR THE DEMOCRATS WHO WILL PULL OUT OF IRAQ. I WILL NOT BE LIKE THOSE RELIGIOUS BIGOTS WHO WOULD NOT VOTE FOR MITT ROMNEY, I WILL VOTE FOR MCCAIN BECAUSE HE WILL STAY IN IRAQ. FURTHER, IF WE WANT OUR ECONOMY TO RECOVER, MCCAIN SHOULD BE MAN ENOUGH TO ASK MITT ROMNEY TO BE HIS V.P…
nvlawyer,
I agree with you. In fact, isn’t there a commandment about such things. Ah yes, the tenth commandment reads, “Thou shalt not bare false witness.” I think there is a huge difference between claiming to belong to a Christian church and actually acting like a Christian. It is to bad that people are having a hard time telling the difference. Claiming to be a Mormon, Baptist, Methodist, Pentacostal, Presbyterian, etc. only means you belong to a religion that believes in the existance of Christ and that he had a ministry on earth. But, to live the principles Christ taught in so far as you understand them is quite a different thing. Either Christ’s gospel, whatever form it takes is a dead gospel or a living one. If it is a living gospel, then it will be found in those living it. If it is dead, then it is found in those who only claim to belong to a church that believes and doing nothing about it themselves. In my study of the Old and New Testaments, I have never found anything that tells me that Christ went about slandering other religions to get gain.
On other issues, I think Mitt Romney is going after the position of Vice President. I mean look at the situation. Senator John McCain is 72 years old and the stresses of the presidency are sure to take a toll on any persons’ life. I don’t know that Senator McCain will make it through this political cycle. There has to be a reason why Mitt Romney has only suspended his campaign and his delegates. This particular tactic is something that probably has Huckabee and his supporters fighting mad. With McCain and Huckabee fighting it out in this competition for the nomination of the Republican Party, only Romney will have the ability to make the difference even if the the margin is slight.
If McCain truly wants to unite the Republican base, he will be forced to choose Romney and his deligates. If Huckabee wants to win, he will have to obtain more delegates then McCain and Romney combined. It would appear to me that Romney keeping his delegates and only suspending his campaign will be a major deciding factor at the Republican Convention as to who the Vice Presidential candidate will be.
There are considerable tactical advantages for a Romney Vice Presidency. As the President of the United States Senate, he would have a significant influence in keeping moderate Republicans in check. He would also act as a voice of conscience for McCain in making decisions that would improve his position with the conservative base.
Should Romney become the Vice Presidential candidate, he would be the establishment candidate for future election cycles. There would be no doubt that he would then have a significant base of support built in to a prospective bid in future presidential elections. He would have the popularity, the organization, the leadership, and the money.
Romney’s campaign has mostly been dogged based upon his popularity in states who have had little to nothing to do with him. He was virtually unknown. While some losses have hurt him, the investments he has made in his campaign are on hold status right now or at least the convention. But, my bet is that his stock will rise because of the delegates he has and the need for them at the convention between McCain and Huckabee.
