Hillary Deeply Offended by Reporter’s Chelsea Remarks

Hillary Clinton may be a former first lady, a US Senator, and a front-runner in the race to be the next President, but she reminded reporters tosay that she’s first and foremost a mother.

Asked about MSNBC reporter David Shuster’s on-air line that Chelsea Clintonls phone calls to recruit superdelegates were tantamount to being “pimped out” by the campaign, Clinton said “I am a mother first and a candidate second, and I found the remarks incredibly offensive.”

“I can take whatever comes my way, that’s part of what I signed up for as a candidate, as an office holder,” she said. “But I think that there’s been a troubling pattern of comments and behavior that has to be held accountable.”

“So I have sent a letter to the head of NBC expressing the deep offense that I took and pointing out what has been a troubling pattern of demeaning treatment and I would expect appropriate action to be taken.”

Shuster has already been suspended for his remarks, and Clinton did not elaborate on what she thought would constitute appropriate action.

As for whether she’ll go to the scheduled MSNBC debate on Feb 26th? “We’ve accepted a lot of debates from a lot of different sponsors. So we’re going to wait and see how this plays out.”

UPDATE: read that letter below:

Dear Mr. Capus,

Thank you for your call yesterday. I wanted to send you this note to
convey the depth of my feeling about David Shuster’s comments.

I know that I am a public figure and that my daughter is playing a
public role in my campaign. I am accustomed to criticism, certainly
from MSNBC. I know that it goes with the territory.

However, I became Chelsea’s mother long before I ran for any office and
I will always be a mom first and a public official second.

Nothing justifies the kind of debasing language that David Shuster used
and no temporary suspension or half-hearted apology is sufficient.

I would urge you to look at the pattern of behavior on your network that
seems to repeatedly lead to this sort of degrading language.

There’s a lot at stake for our country in this election. Surely, you
can do your jobs as journalists and commentators and still keep the
discourse civil and appropriate.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

Good for Hillary. A national reporter should be able to choose appropriate standard language that everyone can understand, without resorting to derogatory slang. Shuster and Matthews should step down.

Comment by bill

Shuster and some seem to always be venting something not important. He is wendy and not worth much. I wonder how concerend the Dems are when they use such horrible terms against others seems not to ever . He may not have even wanted it to sound as it did, but it did. He does own the apology to her, but not sure he deserved to loose his job. The Clintons are burning so many bridges, they may not have one to get home on.

Why would we be surprised.

Comment by Scott

Well it’s not quite as clear cut in my mind. Yes his comments were unwise but for Hillary to essentially say she can take what comes her way but leave her daughter alone…look…you put her in the fray, Hillary or at least she chose to enter it. That makes her fair game for attack. Again I think the comment probably crossed the line but if you jump into a snake pit expect to take a bite or two.

Comment by Vince Foster

It was a joke! Did it hurt Chelsa? NO! Hillary is scared because Obama is catchng her, so she is trying to take the attention off of her less than expected showing. This is a typical Clinton trick. Hillary went out of her way to insult General Petraeus who is a man of honor and integrity, but has a fit because somebody makes a joke about they way they are using Chelsa to campaign.

Poor Bill and Hillary!

Comment by Bob Griffith

Well, the comment was directed at the campaign, not Chelsea.

Comment by Paul

If Shuster had said that Obama was “pimping out” Mrs. Obama for campaigning for him I am sure SC would have burnt to the ground. Why is there always a double standard when it comes to the Clintons?

Comment by Dean

For everything I can not stand about Hillary, she is crafty like her husband. Stir up a stink so that the public gets to have it in their face and apeal to the women voters at the same time for free. Great political move.

Comment by sean

I am an Obama supporter but I think the comments were ridiculous.

Comment by Bill

I agree with Vince Foster. Hillary, I think, just sees a chance to get up the cross and garner a little sympathy. And not a very original response by her, either.

Poor, poor Hillary.

Comment by Steve

And journalists wonder why people dislike and distrust the media? I’m a conservative Republican and am no fan of Mrs. Clinton’s, but journalists regularly go over the line of good taste and decency with the Senator. I appreciate that the reporter was working live in a controversy style show, but these kind of comments are too common to attribute to carelessness or pressure. Journalists are just mean-spirited, hard-hearted, and cynical protectors of the First Amendment. (Or are they just hiding behind it?)

I realize this style pays the bills and has for a long time now, but isn’t there a better way?

Comment by Bennett

Gimme a break!

The “pimped out” comment was not, in any way, a reflection on Chelsea. It is, however, a big reflection on Hillary , who is willing to do whatever it takes to obtain power.

Hillary will attempt to take umbrage over any comment, however accurate, that she believes will help give her victimhood status.

If the shoe fits, wear it!

Comment by Disgusted

Chelsea Clinton is a bleeping adult. When she was 13,I thought it was kind of cruel when SNL
did the Chelsea skit. But she’s what? 26 or 27 now? Even if it was directed at her (and I
believe “pimping her out” was a slam on her parents) she should be tought enough to handle
it.

Comment by Betty Hicks

Finally something I can agree on with Hillary. I believe Hillary does love her daughter and has done her best to protect her from some EVIL people out there in the media who will do anything for a laugh at anyone’s expense. It’s pitiful. I would never in a 1000 years vote for Hillary, but I do think she’s right on this issue. She would be wrong ot to stand against this. I

Comment by Chad

Having somebody punished for using free speech that she doesn’t approve of? She doesn’t sound any better than Bush.

Comment by Rob

If Hillary has difficulty with remarks about her family now, what will she do if elected? Certainly she will be bombarded with much more of the same and those comments won’t be as nice.

Comment by goldenstate

Hillary’s always been very protective of Chelsea so I’m not surprised by her reaction. No one can deny she’s been a great parent. As for Obama, he’s all style and no substance. Hillary is more knowledgeable about the issues than he is. Debates are her strength and his weakness. That’s why he doesn’t want to debate her. I trust Hillary on the economy, health care, and foreign policy. Obama doesn’t even come close. When Hillary talks about experience, she’s talking about life experience.

Comment by Cerebral_but_dull

It is totally classless that announcers use phrases like “pimped out”. And if people can be fired today for using perfectly valid words like “niggardly”, they should clearly be fired for using “pimped out”.

Paul has the right take: if anyone had said Mrs. Obama was being pimped out it would be the leading news item in every newspaper and TV station in the country. In fact, with Al Sharpton around, we wouldn’t hear the end of it for twenty years. It is so insulting to blacks that we think they need “protection” from even a nasty tone while anything goes for whites.

Comment by senesp

She is either in the fray or out. If Hillary doesn’t want her daughter involved and subject to public scrutiny then send her home and keep her out of harms way!

Comment by JOhn

boohoo….

This could be our future leader? Give me a break…this is not the women I want to have for our first lady president.

I don’t know why this is such a big deal. Hillary does nothing but complains and crys.

Comment by Rob

Shuster’s comments come as no surprise. Look at the shame based pathetic Republicans!!! Larry Craig, Abramov, Tom Delay, Bush, Coulture, Limbaugh…they like to think they take the high moral road but the true condition of their psyches (souls) always comes out with a Freudian bang…exposing their true colors to the world. Misogynistic, bigoted, racist, demeaning comments is all they know. In their primitive consciousness and literal mythic mindset….which is entirely fear and shame based….the Republicans have bankrupted this country, squandered our national treasure, and have made a mockery of America and Democracy throughout the world. Hillary should boycott the debate. And Americans will boycott the Republicans and their irresponsible carnage in November. Time to take our country back from these born again idiots.

Comment by Dan C

You guys gotta be kidding…I am neither a Clinton fan, nor big on political correctness, but “pimped out” definitely paints a dark pictured. Those of you attacking Clinton for this are way over the top…I mean she can be conniving, but pimped out has to do with pimps who “own” and mistreat women, and prostitutes, who for the sake of money, have surrendered their integrity and respect!!! This is the type of slang that I constantly tell the young people around me to stop using, and here is a professional reporter not understanding that this language is inappropriate!!! Give me a break!!!

Comment by Ralph

Shuster is a two-bit, over paid, a–hole. NBC, especially MSMBC, should be firing a bunch of their commentators. I watched Scarborough put down Mika, the other morning, just for doing her job, which was reporting the news.

Comment by Tony

Good for Hillary!! This is not an isolated thing for MSNBC, Chris Matthews has made a host inappropriate comments.

Comment by Scott

Cerebral but dull writes…

It is totally classless that announcers use phrases like “pimped out”. And if people can be fired today for using perfectly valid words like “niggardly”, they should clearly be fired for using “pimped out”. <<<

LOL. It’s a good point but in all fairness the aide WAS re-hired when everyone figured out that the word “niggardly” has absolutely no connect to the racial slur. That was funny though.

Comment by Jeff Tuttle

Good! I’m glad she didn’t let that comment roll off her back. For eight years we have appropriately left the Bush twins out of the lime light (even when they were out partying & underage drinking). We do owe Cheney’s daughter some apology for how she was trumped out for political purposes, but, by & large, it has been the ‘code’ of honorable journalists to leave the offspring out, even when they are campaigning. Its just good manners to attack the candidate, not their family, eh?

Comment by RuthAnn Ducmanis

Give the woman a break! She’d already spent 5 million to keep up the facade, all the campaign staff were working without pay, and she needed a volunteer to call those superdelegates, and they are so important those superdelegates, just another badge of pride for our country, along with waterboarding and preemptive war…

Comment by Vicky

When will we as society understand that the language we use creates and demonstrates our values? Chris Mathews and his band of “bothers” at MSNBC have taken their bias against women and demonstrated on a daily basis that its OK to demean over half of the world’s population.
What is clear in the words they use is that they are Sexists of the first degree. If they had made one racist comment their careers would be over ..just ask Imus… as it should be. Do you think they would have said that the Obama campaign was “pimping” out his wife and daughters when they appear on TV with him or advocate for him.. I think not.

There should be zero tolerance for racist And Sexist comments in our public And private discourse.
All mothers and fathers should be outraged. It is not a joke..it is not right.. and it must end. Women and children are the most abused and discriminated against majority in the world and it is time all of us joined together to lift our mothers, our daughters, our sisters, our grandmothers, our aunts to their rightful place of equality and dignity in our society and world. Now is the time.. MSNBC is the place!

Comment by Richard R

So HRC is upset that the media coverage of her campaign tactics has been unfavorable… So what!!!
The FREEDOM of speech carries a responsibility, as do all rights and privileges.
The Media is accountable for what they tell us, sure, but journalism is not to be wavered by influence.
When a publication allows a story to be influenced by the interest of the subject it is reporting it becomes propaganda.
I say shame on MSNBC for suspending their staff based on the boo hoo’s of a powerful political figure.

If HRC lacks the constitution to take criticism she has no business representing the people of the United States.
And If MSNBC lacks the integrity to defend itself despite threats, then they should start broadcasting sit-coms.

Comment by Ken

Integrity in the news media is all but dead. The news media needs to report, period. Sensationalism, speculation, rumors, and opinions need to stop. The issue is the election and the state of our Nation. I could care less what the Hillary, Obama, or Bill do… I want to vote for someone that will lead our country. Personally none of the two mentioned are on my radar.

Comment by Carolyn Sidener

My husband and I watch Chris Matthews’s Hardball every night. During the last month or two we found Chris Matthews and Mr. Schuster’s comments on Hillary and now Chelsea hitting below the belt. They should stop and think before they make remarks that could and should result in their dismissal especially when it is aimed at a Senator, former First Lady who is running for President and now her daughter. They both lack good judgement and common sense. Have they forgotten what happened to Don Imus??? Chris Matthews needs to be more involved in what is presented on HIS show. Maybe they should go to a time delay on their newscast to avoid ending up in a turmoil that hurts everyone.

We are both very disappointed and disgusted in the poor judgement they showed.

Comment by Tony

Richard R wake Up! HRC was not upset that the media coverage of her campaign tactics has been unfavorable; that’s a given. She was upset at the words use, and they very inappropriate.

Comment by Gene

Although the comment shows that MSNBC has crude reporters (or at least one), Hillary’s reaction to it is indicative of how she may react to more important issues on the international front. Why not take him to task on the spot? Show us that you’re capable of deflecting inconsequential comments and staying focused.

Comment by tea party

Hillary will use anything she can to get elected, and has zero shame. when she talks, watch her eyes and not her smile, you will see the true nature of her character. She has the style of politics that has worked so well for so long, but folks, people are getting wise. If she is elected, the split between the country will be just as bad as ever, we cannot afford 4 or 8 more years of hate, gridlock, and power plays. If we elect Obama, at least we have a clean slate that just maybe, the majority can give him a chance. Hillary will get no “honeymoon”, guaranteed, and the sniping will be at an all time high, Senators grandstanding and stalling any proposals of meaning, Hillary is a nightmare waiting to happen to America.

Comment by Mike

First and foremost a mother? After Shuster’s well worded apology on NBC I can not see why Clinton continues to drag this matter out other than for it’s use as a political ploy. That, then, it seems, she would, indeed, be pimping her daughter out.

Comment by Mother first

What a shame! Schuster needs to be ripped for this comment. Who is he to pass out slanderous comments. Shows his upbringing and how stupid he is. No surprise: nBC is full of them!

Comment by Trey

This is why I NEVER watch MSNBC! The comment in question, in my opinion, was great! Why should Chelsea be afraid to talk to reports. I would love it if a reporter would ask her what she thinks of her dad and monica. Why not, Billary wants to put her out there for everyone to see and she takes no questions form reporters (not even a child, who more than likely had an innocent question.) It is time for America to send a message to the Clintons. Go HOME to Arkansas or New York or better yet maybe Bill can carpetbag in Arizona when McCain wins by default because why would the USA actually elect Clinton.

Poor, Poor Billary

Comment by Bodin

It seems that if Queen Hilary doesn’t get her way it’s “Off with his head” for anybody crossing her. I don’t recall anyone losing their job when Bush’s daughter were being made fun of for being party girls. Queen Hilary is showing her true colors now. Throwing her not inconsiderable weight around over one crass (face it, anybody would be offended at someone saying that about a family member) but in the long run negligible rermark is over the top in her reaction. That woman truly scares me. I don’t think she even vaguely understands the concept of democracy–she is out for POWER. She makes Lady Macbeth look like a shy, unambitious wife.

Comment by Peter

Shuster should probably not have made those comments, Chris Matthews on the other hand was right on target when he said that her rise to national prominence was based upon her husbands “philandering”.

Comment by Tony

It’s funny how the people who have such odium for HRC, attempt to justify MSNBC’s behavior. How sad!!

Comment by Richard R

Inappropriate or not, my point is about mis used power. as for the language used… that is censorship, take it or leave it.

Comment by Dean

see what I mean? Look at the reaction by women especially, and you will see the absolute brilliance in Hillarys’ tactics.

Comment by Jeff Tuttle

Vince Foster says it was just a joke. Disgusted (good handle) says Chelsea is an adult and is fair game. Bennett says “Pimped out” says more about her parents than it does about her. Well, that is interesting! Implying that one’s offspring are prostitutes out turning tricks for your ambitions is a little different than criticizing someone for their political philosophy, isn’t it? Has the conservative movement become so jaded they don’t know the difference?
If one were to take any of the so-called Entertainment “NEWS” commentator’s family members and denigrate them, because they assumably were in the public eye by association, then I’m sure those same character assassins would be crying foul.

Comment by Darla Jean Christopher

Rush Buttpimple got cheers from CONscum when he called Chelsea as a child the “White House dog”; yes, the radical right has made degrading the Clintons a sport.* This sick occurrence carries over to those perhaps not infested with the NeoCON penchant for ignorance. The Senator addressed the offense well.

*Lest those on the rational right forget, McCain was the target of smears from the slimeright in 2000 also.

Comment by Katie

You know what? I am a registered Democrat in this country, and I will vote for a Democrat in the next presidential election, whether it be Obama or Hillary. But I am disgusted that this stupid little man who say she was being “pimped out” might lose his job over stupid little words. I’m sure the man’s an idiot, but for Christ’s sake. Suspended? Let me the man say he’s sorry, even though he shouldn’t HAVE to, and let him do his job. I don’t know what it feels like to have someone say something like that about my kid because I don’t have any…but come on…take it and move on.

Comment by Cindy

Any man who would allow those words to be used, in reference to their daughter and not say anything are wimps. To say only women are offended is stupidity at new level.

Comment by Swannie

HEY Rob, you nailed it … I think it is extraordinary that when Hillary asks for some real standards she is constantly accused of being manipulative by people who dont care that our children are learning that opinions now pass for news, attacking passes for debate , and status is what really counts , over substance . However, the “fundies” are about to find out the world truly is flat not in the sense they would have us believe but more along the Friedman model .
And if any newsman had said Obama was pimping out any member of this family , I am certain that repercussions would have been swift indeed.

Comment by Azadeh Sefidroo

I am very happy that she took some action against such an attack. I feel so bad and sorry for dear Chelsea and all our children who have to face such a things. I hope their generation learns from this and can find a civilized way to avoid such an incidents.

Comment by Clarence Bell

This another Clinton to ploy to garner sympathy ! Give me a break you have her working for you !

Comment by Leonardo

Well,
Get use to it, there will be full moon once every month. Just imagine!

Comment by Darrell

Oh give me a break! This is a publicity stunt. “Pimping out” is slang for getting your friends to help you for free. So he used the term and perhaps went over the line. Suspension and Hillary threatening to not go to the debate? Way to go Hill! Show them who’s boss!

Yeah right. Hillary did a good job of rolling with the punches on this one.

This one costs her if she does withdraw from the debate as she’s already having a tough time getting Obama to come to one.

How many times will the media and the people come running when Hillary cries “WOLF!”?

Comment by Richard R

Leonardo.. your humor is refreshing indeed.

Comment by observer

I don’t care for Mrs. Clinton, but Shuster’s comments were way over the line.

The issue isn’t how tough Mrs. Clinton or Chelsea are, but rather how professional and decent Shuster is NOT. Every once in a while, one of these guys shows what scum they really are, and this was one of those times.

Shuster should be fired, but Shuster alone is not the problem, because he doesn’t control what actually gets on the air. The producer, director, and anyone else who failed to stop that stupid comment should also be fired…however high that goes.

The real test for Mrs. Clinton will be what she does now that she’s had her sound-bite moment. If she goes ahead with the debate, it was all just for show.

If she actually cancels the debate (I’m sure Obama would agree to move it to another venue/network), then I’ll give her some Mommy points.

If she crys (again), I’m going to puke (again).

Comment by joseph

well, I did not realize that Chelsea was such an innocent creature, is she 10 ,11, 14 years old, if she is part of the Clinton election team she better take the heat or put her in a glass case

Comment by airplanejim

Gee Rob, at 2:01, you manage to take an inappropriate remark made by a liberal commentator on a left wing cable network and turn it into a tirade on Republicans who had nothing to do with it. Could you be a Koz member, maybe?????? Perhaps Moveon????? What a bigot!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Adam

O.o
Hillary claims to be the better one at fighting slander, etc.
Perhaps what she means is that she has more friends in high places. This is just a small demo of her ability to crush opposition with a simple wave of her pen. I can’t wait until she garnishes my wages to force me to buy health insurance!

Comment by Janice

From reading these responses, I’m beginning to believe most of the public understands the mindset of Hillary Clinton. NBC was wrong to suspend anybody. She’s a big girl (Hillary). To insinuate to NBC that “the appropriate action” be taken….and then they suspend Shuster is cowardly. Hillary Clinton is sure to always have Chelsea in the audience during her debates to insure that ‘offensive’ remarks about the scandals of her husband (and her) are not thrown out. I know she is a mother and ‘loves’ her daughter, but after all the trash of the Clinton administration, you would think that to protect Chelsea from those sort of comments, Hillary would ask her not to atted. No one can put more insult on their child than both of the Clintons already have.

Comment by Gene

Shuster has the same freedom of speech rights as all of the rest of us. I have the right to not watch or listen to him and also MSNBC. If MSNBC chooses to remove him because it is financially costing them then that is their right. However, we as a society clamor for episodes like this, whether it be Shuster or Cowell and so we make it financially rewarding to make reporters become provocative - that ,ladies and gents is our fault - we buy it.
However, Hillary’s continued response shows not a person of strength, but one looking for the sympathy vote. Given today’s climate I personally want someone of strength leading this country. It is not a “woman” issue - Maggie Thatcher, Bhutto et al have proven that. Given her weaknesses, I dout Hillary will be “our first”

Comment by unreasonably rationed

Crass? yes. Rude? yes. Stupid? yes. Appropriate for television? No.

A comment about the child? or A comment about the parents referencing the child?

Beautiful manipulation of language. The clinton experience demonstrated again.

The comment while referencing the child, is in fact about the parent. Yes, this
was another version of ‘they will say or do anything to get elected’ in the crudest
possible language. They will use their child and clearly, they have taken full advantage
of this opportunity to maximize that use to get what they want. The multiplier effect
here is phenomenal. The experience the clintons have and use best.

Why do so many allow the clintons to tell them how to understand language?

When the clintons are manipulating language to create the illusion of victimhood?

The comment itself implies that the child too is being manipulated and used
in a victim like way by the experienced parents. The magic of the clinton machine
to create this sort of illusion is fascinating. Is that the leadership you want?

Are you going to put a mother who holds her child out in front of her as protection
into the highest public office in this country? One where she will be in a position to
not only use her own child but will also be in a position to use you or your child?

Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Charles Mackay is an amazing chronicle of alchemy and other epidemics that have been foisted on societies over the past six hundred years. Very few people recognize these schemes while they are in play.

Are you a participant in the largest confidence game in the history of mankind?

You have a choice, either you wake up now and pay attention to what is happening around you for yourself or you accept the reality that the clintons create for you and wait to read about yourself five years from now. The books will be written.

MSNBC should boycott the Clintons. That would be a public service.

It is not too late to break the spell

Is Hillary is going to cry, send big daddy to beat up bullies, take her toys home and refuse to play everytime someone says something she doesn’t like? That would make for interesting foreign and domesitc policies.

Chelsea is grown. The comment, was not even directed at her. Yes, the comment was crude. True, but crude.

Enough with the smoke and mirrors. Isn’t that what you are acusing your opponent of doing? Get over it.

Comment by ray

None of the cable networks practice objective journalism, they fill their time with opinions from a very narrow revolving gene pool of pundits. Shuster’s comments were out of line but I am also tired of hearing Pat Buchanan say for the umpteenth time, “let me tell you how it is”. Mathews, Blitzer, Shuster, Tucker, Scarburough, and others need to retake Journalism 101 and raise the level of their programming. Fox folks probably never took it to begin with, however they don’t seem to offer up regurgitated poll data as much as MSNBC or CNN, they are just lopsided. I prefer to watch Animal Planet.

I think you should step down, sir, graciously- for you have no clue about the respect due a young woman the stature of what Chelsea Clinton represents.

Apology’s are not accepted, as in the case of Mama Bear Clinton!!!

With good reason!!!! May the rest of the networks take note.

Some in the press think they can get away with anything and everything in the name of “freedom.” They are disgustingly insensitive, partial, and barbarous. They don’t realize their freedom ends where your nose begins. Just look at how the sleazy paparazzi hound the celebrities day in and day out.

While curbing freedom is not a solution in general, the public has the power and should exercise it to straighten up the rogue elements in the media — just abandon them when they cross the line to display insensitivity and partiality. In other words, let them exercise their freedom and we’ll exercise ours.

Hillary shouldn’t have to put up with such garbage either. It’s not a prerequisite for any job.

I see people are putting more emphasis on the remarks made rather then looking at the core of the reporters comments. I do not agree the comments were made properly in the wording, but should it not be the responsibility of Hillary to be making these calls if it’s such an important issue to her? It should be her pleading the case for the votes instead of having your child calling and in essence begging for votes.

I don’t even believe Hillary would still be married to Bill Clinton had she not wanted to further her own political career. What example has she set for Chelsea after Monica Lewinsky and so many other women? There were many accounts of Hillary’s temper, control, cursing and swearing, and throwing ashtrays in the White House with Bill….and she is a very smart cookie. She is a hypocrite….encouraging women’s rights and being so ‘experienced’ in the attacks of the media. Her concern is not for Chelsea; her concern is for her own ambition.
