Romney Calls Dole

Boston, MA—

Mitt Romney tried to call Senator Bob Dole this morning before the campaign plane took off from Charleston, West Virginia to Bedford, Massachusetts. He left a message with the former presidential candidate’s secretary. It is unclear if Romney wanted to apologize to Dole or just explain comments he made this morning on FOX & Friends.

Dole sent a letter to Rush Limbaugh telling him to lay off John McCain and that the Arizona senator is a conservative. Limbaugh has been attacking McCain and it has escalated in recent days. Romney was asked about it this morning:

“It’s probably the last person I would have wanted write a letter for me. I think there’s a lot of folks who tend to think that maybe John McCain’s race is a bit like Bob Dole’s race. That it’s the guy who’s next in line, the inevitable choice.”

The McCain camp was quick to respond–McCain called the comments “disgraceful” and called on the former Massachusetts governor to apologize.

After speaking at the West Virginia Delegate Convention, Romney tried to clarify his remarks, calling Dole an “American hero, a war hero, a fine man and a great leader for our party.” He even commented that he thinks he contributed to Dole’s presidential campaign and if he didn’t then he should have. He tried to explain his comments:

“What I said was he’s not the person I would’ve wanted if I were John McCain to be writing a letter to Rush Limbaugh about this election process because Bob Dole reminds the American public that our selection at that time was seen by most as being one that went to the person who waited in line the longest, who deserved the nomination, who’d been in the Senate the longest, and that I don’t believe will be a successful strategy in this process,” Romney told reporters.

“I don’t think that Senator McCain will be helped by a parallel to a campaign based on being in the Senate the longest, being the person who deserves it, being the frontrunner. Instead, I think we’re best to select the nominee who brings new vision, passion, energy, judgment and ideas to the White House.”

Once again, Mitt Romney, flipping and flopping for all the world to see!!!

Comment by Gayle

The joke here is Romney said what he really meant the first time and is now trying to retract it…blah! Romney changes his opinions, his statements, his positions to suit the climate. What a joke and what a loser! If Romney was such a great leader in Massachussetts, why did the two conservative newspapers back McCain? That’s because Romney had too many positions and changes them based on what he thinks people want to hear. I don’t trust Romney and anyone that has to buy the election will never get my vote!

Comment by Stephanie

It is McNasty that should apologize; To America for all of his lies and to his party for not leaving it.

Comment by glenn

mark,
Your flip-flop charge falls flat. He had to clarify in light of the false accusations and spin coming out of the McCain camp. There was nothing wrong with his original comment.

Comment by Ci2Eye

Romney isn’t flip-flopping, McCain is once again trying to twist his words to his benefit.

McCain is proving himself to be sleazy and whatever residual ‘war-hero’ status he may have had is gone in my opinion.

The fact is that the party nominated Bob Dole in 1996 because he was an old hero and they thought it was Bob’s turn to run. Likewise, in 2008, the party is looking to another old guy who’s been waiting in line to run. But the 71-year old McCain will get beat too if he’s the party’s nominee.

Well, Romney does have a point. Bob Dole, although he didn’t do that bad in the national election, was not all that popular overall. And after his stunt as spokesman for Viagra and a lobbyist for Middle East businesses (he is on the payroll for Dubai I believe), I don’t think I wouldn’t want him speaking out for my campaign. Not to mention how annoying it is listening to someone speak in the third person all the time. My real fear is that the Republican party is being pulled faster and faster to the left because conservatives have lost their voice and their cohunnas. Conservatives must win not only the Presidency but the Senate and House in order to keep this country from looking like France. After that, they must act like conservatives and start conserving.

First of all, the writer of this article, Shushannah Walshe, needs to do her homework. She obviously didn’t read the letter that Bob Dole sent to Limbaugh. Secondly, it’s been over 10 YEARS since Dole and McCain “worked” in the senate together.

Limbaugh and millions of other conserative Republicans do not favor McCain or care for his politics. The media is taking it easy on McCain because they want him to be the Republican candidate. Once the race is between Clinton/Obama the media will beat McCain like a rented mule. They’ll care less he was in the military or a POW. Don’t think so… just watch if (heaven forid) McCain gets the nomination of Mitt Romney. By the way, the reason they’ve been nice
to Huckabee is he provides another avenue to get to Romney.

Neither Obama or Clinton are qualified to be President, nor do they have the guts for it.

Comment by Ethan

CI2I,

You’re right. McCain wants to be thought of as ‘next in line’. I don’t see how this guy has even gotten this far. How many times has he tried to run anyway? And how on this green Earth is McCain a conservative? Because he supports the war (for now)? So does Lieberman. Is he a conservative? There’s a ticket for ya, McCain/Lieberman. HaHa! He’s (McCain) just trying to be the ‘great compromiser’ of the 21 century. Another Henry Clay…ya right. Too bad none of his compromises ever came to fruition. And by the way, Clay ran for the presidency twice and lost both times.

Comment by M. J. Bee

Correction: Typo - It should read:

… just watch if (Heaven FORBID) McCain gets the nomination OVER Mitt Romney.

Comment by KH

“I think I may have contributed to his presidential campaign, or if I didn’t, I should have.” - I guess that’s the way you think when you’ve got so much money you don’t even know where you spent it, and you’re willing to say anything to endear yourself.

The only thing Romney has going for him is the eternal hate-on that the Republican politico insiders have for him for taking the campaign finance punchbowl away from their party through McCain-Feingold, even though it’s what the voting public asked for.

Comment by John

If McCain wins the nomination it will be the demise of conservatives in the republican party. There will be low turnout on for the republicans participating in the general election because conservative I know only like Rhinos in Africa and Zoo’s not in the republican party. If the huckster from hope becomes the VP nominee all I can say is Romney/Thompson 3rd party! The last thing this country needs is 4 more years of Rhino rule, 12 years of Bush rhinoism is enough for this conservative. At least with the Hillbillary administration you were able to put together a loyal opposition which if I remember correct Sen McCain was not a part of and defeat there socialist agenda. And by the way Hillary and Obama are socialist not democrats so, please start referring to them correctly.

Comment by Mike

To Gayle

If you think the two Mass papers are conservative, then you just don’t get it. Thats like saying the New York times is conservative. Romney offers a new very bright personality to get real change in DC. Do you really think McCain will “cross” his democrat buddies and fix taxes, immigration, recession, entitlements, etc?

Mike

Comment by David

There is nothing wrong with “flip-flopping.” It just means that a person is “open-minded.” The only difference in terms is connotation. I also think it applies to every single candidate out there who has ever run for the presidency.

Comment by Ethan

Everyone will have a change of opinions as they grow. Politicians have this all the time. However, the point is whether they can be trusted when they say “I will be a conservative president”. Even Reagan changed his policy decisions. Reagan had a clear moral foundation for the country. He once said, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, they left me”. McCain, on the other hand, should say I didn’t leave the Democratic party, I joined them. If he wins, I will probably vote for him for the only reason that I believe he is much less socialist than either Clinton or Obama. However, his election would forever pull the Republicans to the left unless the Senate and House can be taken by true conservatives.

Comment by Craig

If McCain is the best the Republican party can do, then please stop the bus because I’m getting off!

Comment by Jim Flanagan

It’s about time Sen. McCain realizes that military experience does not, in and of itself, determine who is an “American hero.” His service to our country warrants our respect and admiration, but it certainly doesn’t make any of his social or economic positions more relevant. When cornered Sen. McCain seems all to willing to unsheath his military trump card like a sword, warding off those who would question his ability to take this country into the future. His calculated attempt to suggest Gov. Romney, by virtue of not being a military veteran, has somehow disparaged Bod Dole’s service only seems to cheapen his own. Sen. McCain keep your distinguished service where it belongs….out of the gutter.

Why should Dole accept a call from a draft dodger?

Rush Limpwrist is in then same class as the elite celebrities and movie stars that people seem to swoon over, totally in a world of his own, needs to pop a few more pills and return to reality.

I wish people would stop bashing Mitt Romney, period! If u would stop & listen to this guys heart & not prejudge him; he does have a lot of business & ethical sense! Something we badly need in this country! He’s only human and makes errors just like the rest of us, but he’s for real!

I just wish everyone else had his sense of moral character and fiber from within! We need someone to come in from the outside and clean the mess that this sitting President has made, along with Congress!! It makes me sick to listen at all of the stones they want to cast against Mitt and if u really really listen to him, esp. his good honest heart, u’d come away knowing full well of what he’s trying to make happen! He’s not trying to buy his position…please! I gotta hand it to someone that puts up his own millions only to change the terrible state this country is in with the present ones’ running it amuk!!

Stop giving Mitt a hard time!! He’s a good honorable man. U go Mitt!!

Comment by DenisL

Rush knows the Republican Part has gone astray and has drifted from its conservative moorings. I wonder if he is hoping for a brokered convention with none of the currently active candidates getting enough votes. We then have to draft someone.
I would suggest Ron Paul who remembers what Reagan believed in AND was endorsed by Reagan in 1978!
He also knows that the Islamic Jihad must be beaten but NOT by invasion of countries where a lot of innocent children are killed in the hunt for Osama bin Laden. Ron Paul also knows to cut spending first and taxes later so that the budget really balances and we can save Social Security. He knows what Ben Franklin said paraphrasing: “Those who give up freedom to achieve security, will achieve NEITHER.”
I do not see why it is so hard to see that ALL of the top 3 active candidates are warmed over neocons, not worthy of the proud name of conservative.

Why does Bob Dole still have a secretary?

Isn’t he like 107 years old by now? He should be well planted in his rocker by now.

The Church of Fake Conservatism

Pasters/Ministers :- Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh

Associate Pasters:- Sean Hannity, Mitt Romney, Laura Ingram, Michelle Malkin

Beliefs:-

The poor can’t be conservative.

Only the Rich can be Conservative.

Worship Money.

Conservative has no compassion for the poor.

Conservative has no compassion for the immigrants,

Conservative has no compassion for blacks.

The only thing conservative cares about is reducing taxes.

It is O.K to be LIBERAL all your life and then convert to Conservatism in “the election year”

Comment by Carol

But Romney was exactly correct. Dole did feel entitled to the presidency as does McCain now They both did think they were next in line due to their age and interminable tenure.

Comment by Eric

If McCain somehow wins this thing, my vote will be going to the Democrats, hopefully Obama. I won’t support a Republican Party that has devolved into liberalism. If I have to vote for a liberal, it will be for a liberal that does not pretend to be otherwise. And it will be for a decent human being as opposed to the abomination that is McCain.

Comment by Eric

Look Glen,

Are you trying to redefine conservatism because you don’t like the sound of liberal? You sorta know it’s bad, but aren’t sure why…?

Of course poor people can be conservative, but conservatives don’t resent wealthy people for their money. Liberals do. There are many poor who don’t covet.

Conservatives have compassion for the poor. They just don’t think handouts are compassionate because they create a permanent underclass. If you believe in handouts, you are a liberal.

Conservatives are color-blind. Conservatives think blacks are equal and so don’t need special treatment, as if they were mentally handicapped or something. If you think blacks aren’t as capable as whites and so need “white people’s” help to make it, you are liberal.

Conservatives care about reducing taxes because government is incompetent and wasteful. We know best how to spend our own money and do more compassionate service with it than the government can ever do….

Conservatives don’t worship money. But they do think that they are entitled to the product of their labor. If you think someone else is entitled to the product of thier labor, you are a liberal.

I hope you weren’t actually voting today….

Comment by Amy

Well said Eric! The conservatives in this country need to stop being ashamed because of the Bush presidency and band together. We keep letting the liberal media and those drug-addicted celebrities tell us what to think.

Comment by Carol

A number of years back it was looking the same way up in Canada. The Conservative Party morphed into the Liberal Party and it was impossible to tell them apart. So some really fantastic conservatives created the Reform Party, which had a bumpy start at first, but had a good enough showing to keep them going. Eventually the Reform Party annihilated the Conservative Party. (It was a beautiful thing.)

Well, eventually the Reform Party melted back into the conservatives and Alliance, but the current Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, is actually an old Reform party member. And he’s a really good guy, who runs circles around Canada’s insanely liberal media (and you think ours is bad).

The point of my rambling is that maybe there needs to be another conservative party formed down here. Our two parties are becoming one and the same, so what is a person to do…?

Comment by Tony

Mitt Romney should drop out of the race.

He says he knows how to run a business, well if that were true then he should fire himself. Romney has used up more than $70 million in American voter’s donations and has little to show for it. His product is a flop, too expensive and not selling.

On the other hand, Huckabee’s product is very inexpensive and selling just as well or better. Now come on, which product would you buy?

Romney product = $70 dollars for a widget that yields 293 delegates = $0.23 cents per widget
Huckabee product = $2 dollars for a widget that yields 190 delegates = $0.01 cent per widget

Huckabee’s product cost 1 cent per widget compared to Romney’s product at 23 cents per widget which calcuates out to the same performance of the product (division of delegates won so far). Any one in their right mind would buy the widget that costs 1 cent if it performs exactly the same as the widget that costs 23 cents.

The business formula that Romney says he is good at proves that he should drop out of the race. He is wasting tons of money. If he can’t run a campaign finacially sucessfully how in the world will he run a huge American government successfully???

Romney is losing money as fast has Enron did with social security of it’s employee’s.

Huckabee is a true leader, someone who wants to share the power with all Americans, not show his prideful power like Romney does.

Vote for true conservative Mike Huckabee!

Excellent article. Romney has ehibited leadership qualities now and that is what we look for in a president! He has a positive attitude!!
