Huckabee’s ” Great Win” in West Virginia; On Romney WV Complaint: “I Thought He said No Whining?”

North Little Rock, AR-

Shortly after his campaign was first alerted by FNC, about the West Virginia victory, a jubilant Mike Huckabee , along with his wife Janet, voted at their polling station in North Little Rock.

Huckabee then took a few moments to speak to reporters about his” great win”  West Virginia, and denied any back-room deal by his campaign in the West Virginia win. ” There wasn’t even a front-deal, ” Huckabee said.

“No there wasn’t a deal, I think maybe the McCain people and the Ron Paul people once they realized there guy wasn’t going to win.. voted for us. “Huckabee said.” We won, and we won despite being incredibly outspent as we were in Iowa and other places.People are responding to our message, and the votes today were votes for us. Were excited about it and were deeply grateful to the people of West Virginia.”

FNC’s Jake Gibson Reported earlier, in an effort to block Romney and ensure a win, McCain WV delegates, who’s candidate was losing that convention, decided to throw their backing behind Huckabee.  FNC asked Huckabee to respond to the Romney campaign’s West Virginia campaign manager, Beth Myers who described  it as” back room deal with the tax-and-spend candidate he thought could best stop Governor Romney.”

” I thought (Romney) was saying yesterday no whining? So is it no whining or whining? He can even keep a straight answer on the whining or now whining question, “Huckabee said,” He was saying that I was a liberal, and now he’s saying that I was taking votes from bc I was too conservative, and pulling conservative votes. So which is it?am I conservative taking votes from conservative views, or am I a liberal? Am I a whiner or is he a whiner?”

So, I am coming to the realization that Huckabee and the English language have yet to come to terms. I know he obtained his undergrad, his only degree, with a minor in English. He does seem to struggle with understanding it. Romney’s campaign made a statement, “This is back room deal politics, which is despicable”. That is a statement, not a complaint or a whine. Did anyone notice, how he didn’t deny the allegation?
Romney never told him to drop out of the race. Others said that, and he said he would never tell anyone that. He went on to explain that a far distant 3rd place with no likelihood of winning, is doing little to try to defeat the front runner, but rather help him.
Huckabee has pissed and moaned about this and that, but never actually shows that he understands the statements. So my conclusion is, he obviously can’t fully grasp the English language. How else could he come to the asinine conclusions that he comes up with.

Is lying a sin? Huckabee should know better than to lie. Some of McCains supporters told the media they were directed to put their support behind Huckabee. Just proves a vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain. Does Huckabee think the American public is stupid or what!

These two are becoming less and less presidential.

Huckabee should be pumping gas somewhere. This guy is retarded.

wow huckabee, way to show the true colors. They look great on Mccain as well. I think I know where my vote falls now. Whatever happened to the GOP. If Romney dosent make it to the primaries, I guess, I’ll become independent.

Huckabee says: “So which is it?am I conservative taking votes from conservative views, or am I a liberal? Am I a whiner or is he a whiner?”

I think it’s that you’re a candidate who can’t win on his own merits. I would be too embarassed to even accept WV if I were Huckabee. This win is as impressive as when you’re a kid in the elemenatary school talent show where everyone gets some lame prize. But I do appreciate him making credible the claim that a vote for him is a vote for McCain. It can’t be denied after today.

Comment by Karen

Huckabee - his ongoing comments prove he is not only a poor loser but also a poor cheater. McCain - clearly he lacks honesty, trustworthiness and leadership skills. Their envy over Romney’s personal, private and public success has clouded their judgment. What is that the democrats were worried about — the party fighting would make their nomination worthless. McCain - you just made the republican nomination worthless. Good for you buddy - you may have won the battle but you will lose the war.

Romney is whining? A fine upstanding, morally pure candidate as he tries to portray. can’t be true. This is part of the political process. If he cannot play the game he needs to take his doll and go home.

Dear Mr. Huckabee

There was a deal. Ron Paul supporers did not throw you their votes because they think you are an acceptable choice, they wanted the 3 delegates (ever so humble) for Ron Paul.

Now I will vote for Romney. The other 2 are destroying the rep. party and they will pay for it in the fall.

Nevermind whether or not there was (or is) a deal. Gov. Huckabee’s comments about Romney sounded quite bitter and mean spirited.

Comment by Tom L

Anyone who is complaining about dirty politics in this race should be laughed at especially after the nonsense that went on to block Ron Paul from winning Louisiana 2 weeks ago, when the backers of all 4 of the other candidates joined up to vote ‘uncommitted.’ Back room deals are only ‘despicable’ when they don’t work out in your favor.

Romney’s whining b/c he couldn’t buy W.Virginia the way he bought Maine and Wyoming.

Huckabee is a decent politician. He is likable and quick witted. He has at least added some life to the race. He or Mccain or Romney will make a decent President.

Huckabee freezes out Romney for GOP victory with ‘backroom’ agreement

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Like an episode of “Survivor,” West Virginia’s Republican convention ended Tuesday with temporary allies voting off a front-runner.

In the end, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee walked away with the big prize in the convention’s two rounds of voting: West Virginia’s support in his bid to become president.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the pre-convention favorite, was left to complain loudly about last-minute maneuvers that saw Huckabee strike a deal with supporters of Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the national front-runner, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, an also-ran, to squeeze Romney out of the winner’s circle.

Romney had walked into the convention with a strong base of support and a very organized campaign. But things changed quickly.

The convention’s rules stipulated that in order for a candidate to win the convention, he needed to have a majority of votes. Delegates representing each county voted twice.

Romney can’t seal the deal
Romney won 41 percent during the first round to 33 percent for Huckabee. McCain won 16 percent, and Paul brought up the rear with 10 percent. Since no one had a majority, delegates voted a second time, with Paul eliminated.

Representatives of McCain’s and Paul’s campaigns urged their supporters to put their votes behind Huckabee. McCain’s goal was to stop Romney, his closest competitor in the national polls, from picking up momentum; Paul’s goal soon became clear.

As the Huckabee and Paul campaigns huddled, they reached an arrangement: Paul would throw his support to Huckabee in exchange for three of the 18 national delegates that Huckabee could claim with the victory.

“We struck a deal with the Huckabee people,” Edward Burgess, a spokesman for Paul’s campaign, told NBC affiliate WSAZ-TV of Huntington.

“They came to us and dealt with us honorably and with respect. And so we told them that if Dr. Paul didn’t make it through the first round, that we would go for their man,” Burgess said. “They pledged us three delegates to the Republican National Convention.”

McCain staffers, meanwhile, began parading around the hall carrying signs telling their delegates to vote for Huckabee.

Huckabee squeaks through
By the time the second vote took place, Huckabee had just enough to win, 51 percent, to Romney’s 47 percent.

Comment by Joelle Heilemann

Excuse me, but I was a delegate to the convention in WV today. I was privvy to the entire deal that took place. Not only did Huckabee offer 3 seats if we voted for him, but he upped his offer from 2 seats to 3 to compete with the offer from Romeny’s camp.

These men are crooks, liars, and completely untrustworthy. If they cannot stand behind their dealings in small ways, they will back out of every campaign promise they offer.

Please, please, PLEASE, everyone open your eyes. These men are pulling the wool over your eyes to gain a very powerful and very lucrative position. They care about absolutely nothing and no one else.

I for one refused to stay and vote for either of these candidates, because Ron Paul stands for integrity and honesty, and this “deal” smacked of neither. I strongly suspected their offer of a consolation prize was nothing but a play for votes, and was not going to give them the satisfaction of gaining mine. I’m glad I stuck by my principles and refused to be bought by such evil and untrustworthy men.

From the primary FoxNews article on the West Virginia results:

“But before Huckabee’s surprising turnaround in the second round, McCain delegates told FOX News they had been instructed by the campaign to throw their support to Huckabee. McCain delegate John Vuolo said former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer approached him and other McCain supporters at the convention and told them he had spoken to McCain, and that the best thing to do was to support Huckabee in the hope that Huckabee could beat Romney in this winner-take-all state.”

There may or may not have been a brokered deal between McCain and Huckabee, but McCain’s West Virginia backers didn’t come up with the idea to switch. They were instructed to do so by McCain.

It would seem many of you are new to politics… this is how caucuses work, and have worked since America was founded. Wait until the convention later this year… if there is no clear nominee, there will be vote after vote, and yes politicians doing what they do best. If you want to call it a “deal” then fine- but it’s just the way it works. If I was a delegate and didn’t want to vote for candidate B, and knew I would lose as candidate C, then my choice is to support candidate A or no one. Strategically, it makes sense. And besides… people really like Gov. Huckabee. He’s a strong conservative, has genuine candor, maintains his convictions through the years, and is a great leader. I’m a non-evangelical and he has my vote as a conservative. Take a closer look and you may change your mind. Best regards-

Hey Folks,
Don’t be so quick to judge and hang Huckabee. Just think for a minute. A McCain/Huckabee ticket would not be able to whip it’s way out of a wet paper bag. Don’t you think they know that? There is a strategy that McCain has and it’s not to make Huckabee his running mate. Even if it was at one time a plan, it could in no way go forth now. Not after all this reaction. Think about it. I did, and I think McCain knew he had a harder battle against Huckabee, so the only political thing to do is to slam Huckabee. Put bad thoughts in your head. Not everyone will see through this in time.

Huck won on his own merits?

You may support Huck but get a clue as to what has happened here. Huck could not win the state on his own - this was a back room, Washington politics as usual, deal between McCain and Huck. Yes this was a victory - a victory for insider politics.

Open your eyes folks. It takes two politicians to bring down one (and that was a small lead - 3%). This is not a win I would be hooting about.

I guess the MSM and insiders won this one - not Huck, and to the Huck cheerleaders, you know it!

I have been a life long Republican and I am so irritated by the “good-old” boy Washington-type network backing John McCain when he fails to represent the party and is an arrogant jerk. Meanwhile, the religious right led by Mike Huckabee continues to run against Romney, essentially giving McCain support. Huckabee seems to care more about beating Romney than standing up against McCain like his religious morals would dictate. I guess Huckabee is the true hypocrite caring more about himself than his professed convictions. Conversely, Romney represents what is good morally and consistent with conservative ideals. Apparently, the party does not care any more. Romney was right, the Washington insiders are going to give McCain the nomination. McCain will use Huckabee’s candidacy to destroy Romney and in the end Huckabee will accomplish nothing but futher destroy the Republican party. I will say right now, I am not voting for the McCain ticket. I hope he loses.

When is the news media going to realize that Huckabee is getting votes, not because of his religion, but because he supports The FairTax? Wake up everybody.

OK Stanton
So what you are saying is that Huckabee, who is campaigning on merits and little money is hindering Romney who has campaigned on millions of donated money and millions of his own money, and help from the media and endorsements of officials and entertainers, and still the voters lean to or favor Huckabee. Who is really hindering who?

There was a deal struck and the deal gives Ron Paul three delegates look it up it’s been reported in several different places including Ron Paul’s own website.

Comment by james rogers

God will judge Mike Huckabee for his lies and his deception…

Comment by Jim Peterson

I warned the Ron Paul people not to throw support for Huckabee because Huckabee WILL make a deal with John McCain before the September convention, avoiding a brokered convention.

Romney would not do that.

However, it is true that the Ron Paul people in the WV convention made a deal for 3 delegates. Whether that was legal or ethical or not is another matter.

Now, not only does RP not get the 3 delegates, but all those delegates will go to John McCain when Huckabee brokers his deal with McCain over the spring or summer.

In the end, Ron Paul should have warned all players in caucuses to back Romney if they are eliminated because Romney is the only one who can block McCain until after the first round of voting in the September convention.

Comment by Tony

Conservative leaders Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family and Tony Perkins of FRC are endorsing Mike Huckabee for President in the huge value voters guide that I received last night from them.

Huckabee scores 100% in the value voter guide they issued while Romney’s liberal views are still showing through on abortion, human cloning, watering down the Federal Marriage act of 1996 and giving the government authorization to take any American’s property if they choose so.

Dr. James Dobson and Tony Perkins and many other huge National Right to Life groups are supporting Mike Huckabee for President.

Don’t let the Republican party fall in the trap of liberals. The Republican platform can not be water down with Romney’s liberal agenda.

If Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family and Tony Perkins of FRC are endorsing Mike Huckabee, and with the million member supporters they have through the last 20 years, the conservatives are rallying around Huckabee for true conservative values.

Comment by believehuckabee

Romney and his purchased media have told more lies in this election and is recorded in his own voice telling voters this was “now a two-man race” on election eve. He would not even be close if he had not spent millions of dollars feeding the public with lies for the last year. Huckabee is supported by grassroots conservatives because Huckabee is by far the best candidate!

Comment by Eric

Seriously… If you consider yourself a true conservative, how can you feel comfortable with Romney or McCain? Ron Paul might be an ok guy, but he scares me big time on national security issues.

I wish Huckabee had half as much financial backing as either McCain or Romney. He’d trounce them… It’s hard to get your message out there these days when people are too busy in their lives and decide not to inform themselves about the issues and the candidates vs. accepting what they’re fed by the media and pundits…

Go Mike Huckabee! http://www.mikehuckbee.com

Comment by Kristina Penfold

I can not in good conscience vote for McCain or Huckabee. Their lies and scheming against Mitt Romney are not only false but coming out of left field. Romney didn’t even mention Gore’s military experience! And of course he believes in God. Just look at the name of the religion. It is the only religion that has Jesus’ name in the title. And when McCain gave his WV votes over to Huckabee just so Romney won’t win. This is unethical! Our party should not be taken to this level. Come November I am voting for Romney whether he is the nominee or not. Join me!

Comment by Wayne Armstrong

Mitt is a big boy, talks all the time about his experience in the ‘real” business world running companies. For his campaign to complain about such deals being cut during a political caucus is laughable. Those type of deals are part of the process. The rules were very simple, it takes a majority to win and his campaign was simply out maneuvered by the Huckabee campaign. Simply put Huckabee closed the deal and Romney could not. Time to shut-up and move on.

I am really enjoying this!

First Romney whines that he can’t win competing against Mike. Then he whines when the caucus system works like its supposed to.

How much longer before Romney throws in the towel? The crying towel! lololololol

Huckabee won nothing in West Virginia. McCain instructed his delegates to throw the race. I think in boxing and football that is illegal.

But, no whinning. I’m enjoying Huckabee’s positive spin on this thing–he’s getting Washington training from the best.

Comment by Mimi

I am, quite utterly and completely, sick of all of this. With the apparent victory of the scalawag, McCain, the end of the conservative movement has arrived. Say goodbye to the gains made in the Contract with America, Reaganomics, conservative core values. The party has been taken over by left-leaning Republicands In Name Only’s and people like me have no where to go. I have no party to support. In 2000, I stayed up all night to see if Bush would win. He did and his second term has been a monumental failure, with the exception of the war in Iraq. I wouldn’t vote for John McCain for dog catcher. He wanted to change parties in 2001. I wish he had. After he lost the bid for the nomination in 2000, McCain has done everything he can to “pay us back”. Don’t the people of America remember that this man seriously wanted to be John Kerry’s running mate as VP in 2004??? Don’t the people of America who were SO ANGRY about McCain-Kennedy remember that partnership? Honestly, if McCain is all the Republican party can come up with to offer people like me, I fear America’s best days are behind it. The Republican party has been such a disappointment. We gave them the White House, Senate and House and they blew it - totally. I believe the time is now right for a viable third party for TRUE conservatives, not those who parade as such. Romney was a better choice. Huckabee, while interesting for his Fair Tax stance, has shown himself to be disingenuos at best, and unelectable at worst. He appears to be a Man of the Cloth who has sold his soul to the devil McCain. Too bad. I prefer candidates with principles and positive values.

Walking away in Georgia.

Just like Muslims are taught to hate Americans, evangelicals are taught to hate Mormons. The results coming out of the south is no surprise. Comment by Skip

Gosh Don!

You’re such a WHINER! Romney’s more than a Mormon. Just like Huckabee is more than a preacher. Huckabee has over a decade of successful, conservative governing. Romney has been flip flopping since he ran to the left of Ted Kennedy in 1994!

Your trying to make it a ‘Mormon’ thing sounds like religious bigotry to me.

Comment by Michael

As a delegate for Logan County at today’s GOP convention, I voted for Mike Huckabee, not because “all the cool kids were doing it”, but because I felt he was the candidate that best reflected my conservative views. As for this so called “scadal”, I was there. The representatives of the McCain campaign called for all McCain voting delegates to meet in room 105. There, Senator McCain called his delegates and asked them to put their vote for Huckabee. I personally doubt that Huckabee would have agreed to making a deal with a moderate such as McCain, but I feel that McCain felt that by putting his votes for Huckabee was voting against Romney. This can be looked at several ways, but I honestly feel that Huckabee had nothing to do with a scandal, and that it was McCain who made a deal with himself.

Comment by Wayne Armstrong

Coulter says she’d support Hillary over McCain! Rush lambasts McCain and Dole! Funny watching the far right violate the 11th Commandment of the real conservative, Ronald Reagan, who proclaimed, “Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican.” Mimi’s response above, as well as Coulter’s and Rush’s comments are exemplery of the demise of the far fight.

The far right establishment has sunk so far they are supporting a candidate who until recently supported positions that are contrary to their vaunted principles. Romney was pro-life when running for Gov of Mass, changed his position to garner support of the far right - talk about selling you soul and having no principles!

If the far right cannot live with the results of the process that selects their party’s candidate they can do whatever they want; stay home on election day, run a spoiler third party candidate, or shut up and vote the candidate that is most closely aligned to their positions. I know what Ronald Reagan would have done, he would have supported the nominee of his party, kept his mouth shut and waited for the next election - that is exactly what he did when Ford beat him in the 76 primary.

Unfortunately, this generation of right wingers is choosing to ignore the advice and example of their hero. If that proves to be the case, perhaps they have out-lived their welcome and need to sail off into the sunset.

Good Night, Romney supporters. There’s always the next election.

Comment by Jay

This is such nonsense. First off I was there and anyone that knows anything about caucus knows that this is how the system always works. One candidate is out - people from the other camps try to convince supporters of another camp to stay and vote for their man. If a campaign is smart they encourage their voters to vote as a block in whichever direction is strategically best for their man.

Was their a deal with McCain people? NO! Do you really think a McCain supporter in their right mind would vote for Mit Romney? He is their biggest rival, no way. The Huckabee campaign wouldn’t need to do any brokering or deal making.

As for this other ridiculous nonsense about Mit Romney pretending like his campaign is saintly and would never do such back-handed politicking, anyone who was actually in WV knows this was a out-and-out lie. Yes he is whining! He offered the Ron Paul people to match any offer of delegates from the Huckabee camp and at one pointed tried to up the deal to 5 delegates. The deal had already been made for three and they weren’t going to play this auction game with Romney’s camp. This is fair considering the RP people were getting something for Dr. Paul and that is their main focus. The only reason Mit Romney is complaining is because his back room deal was not accepted.

[...] apparently McCain supporters in a nominating convention in West Virginia switched their support to Huckabee on the convention’s second [...]

I will also vote Obama over McCain or Huckabee even though I disagree with him on the issues because at least he isn’t a bigot.

There was every indication that this would be a positive day for Mitt Romney and now he has to deal with dirty back room politics….and despicable tactics by the McCain campaign that will stop at nothing to get their man elected.

Unfortunately, Romney is now fighting an uphill battle with almost everyone in the establishment against him. It used to be, to stand on principle meant something…to take the high road was honorable, integrity was a virtue. Now, they are recipes for failure in politics. If I was Romney, I’d take my millions, take my morals, and my good name and character out of the race and retire from American politics.

The media and the political establishment do not want Honest Abe in the White House, they would much rather have a Slick Willy candidate much like themselves. It makes them feel better about their immoral conduct and helps them sleep at night.

Congratulations to the McCain/Huckabee ticket….GREAT tag team!

Mr. Romney lost. Huckabee did not lie.
If McCain’s team called his own supporters and asked them to support Huckabee–which was asserted by a Romney blogger, not exactly an objective, sure-fire source–but if this even happened, Huckabee isn’t responsible for it. Moreover, McCain didn’t do anything wrong even if his team did make that call: it is a strategy to knock the wind out of the sails of your closest competitor. The risk for him was that Huckabee could end up being his closest competitor.

The Romney team is upset, but nothing wrong was done. Nobody lied. Nobody cheated.

Romney lost. Huckabee won.

He really hasn’t demonstrated the ability to win in key battleground states. McCain has, and so has Huckabee.

If what happened to Romney last night had happened to Huckabee, the media and the talking heads like Rush and Hannity would be shouting that Huckabee should leave the race. But will they even whisper that about Romney now? Perhaps not. But Romney ought to think very seriously about it, nonetheless. And so should everyone who claims to be determined to stop McCain. In all those battleground states Huckabee won, it was McCain who finished in second–McCain whom he beat.

Romney is in trouble, and any objective observer knows it.

The least of Mitt Romney’s worries is West Virginia. His candidacy has failed, and deep down everybody knows it.

Let’s look a bit closer at Romney’s situation. He has thus far won in three states where he really had a big advantage:
1. Massachusetts, where he was governor.
2. Utah, where the huge Mormon population supported him.
3. Michigan, where his father was governor.

Besides those, he has mainly only won in the uncontested states, the ones where almost no one else even battled for. These include Wyoming, Nevada, Maine, Alaska, Montana, and North Dakota.

That leaves just Colorado and Minnesota, where Romney won a state that was at least marginally contested and had a reasonable vote turnout. But neither of these was a real battleground state like California, Georgia, Alabama, New York, Florida, South Carolina, Iowa, Missouri, and so on.

This isn’t to say that those delegates don’t count. In one way, it is a smart strategy for him to pick up those states, and he has the money to go after them. Every delegate counts. However, the point is that his candidacy is very weak, even weaker than it appears according to his delegate count.

He really hasn’t demonstrated the ability to win in key battleground states. McCain has, and so has Huckabee.

I can’t believe the people of W.V. could vote for anyone of these people to seriously say you were part of that vote is sad! That was a dirty vote and I’m ashamed! We are supposed to vote, we were given a right to vote and how could you throw your vote because someone decided for you? Did you really vote? I don’t think so!
