Robert DeNiro Hits the Campaign Trail for Obama

The Obama campaign has invited several celebrities speak at events across the country, including Oprah Winfrey, John Legend, Usher, and Chris Rock. But today actor Robert DeNiro surprised supporters and members of the press alike by appearing on stage to help introduce Senator Barack Obama at a rally in Newark, NJ.

The campaign didn’t event hint there would be an A-list Hollywood actor alongside Senators Kennedy and Obama at the home of the New Jersey Nets. The reason per traveling press secretary, Jen Psaki - celebrity appearances aren’t always certain and should the actor have had a change of plans, bad press might have followed.

The normally politically inactive actor made the trek across the Hudson River from his home in New York City to explain why he was speaking out on behalf of Obama. “I’m here because finally one person has inspired me, one person has given me hope, one person has made me believe that we can make a change - that person is Barack Obama.”

DeNiro began his remarks by mocking Hillary Clinton’s argument that Obama doesn’t have enough experience to be president. “Barack Obama does not have the experience to be President of the United States and I can prove that. Remember, he wasn’t experienced enough to vote to authorize the invasion of Iraq,” he said sarcastically. “Instead, even then he voted against the war he said would lead to a war of undetermined length and undetermined costs and undetermined consequences. He just didn’t get it!” DeNiro said as the crowd laughed in response.

“You know, that’s the kind of inexperience I can get used to. That’s the kind of inexperience our country deserves. But if this election were just to be decided on the quantity of experience, Dick Cheney would be our next president. I prefer the quality of Barack Obama’s experience,” DeNiro said to applause.

DeNiro watched Obama’s speech behind security barricades and did not talk to the press corps about his decision. Watch it here:

DeNiro should check his facts. Obama never voted, he was only running for Senate at the time. He was not a U.S. Senator. Obama should be responsible and make it clear that he never once HAD to vote. He just gave a speech.

As for the delegates tomorrow?

Arizona, Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah are all Clinton’s. That’s twelve states that are, as of recent polls, in favor of Clinton by any margin.

Illinois and Georgia are solid Obama. Two states are known to be for Obama.

California will likely be split between the two.

The unknowns are Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, and Minnesota.

Hillary Clinton will have a major victory tomorrow night, and I believe she will win anywhere from 850-900 delegates. Obama should win anywhere from 750-800. Clinton would have over half of the delegates she needs, not counting her wins in Florida and Michigan. If Florida and Michigan are introduced, she will have at least 300 more delegates assuming they are brought in at full delegate counts.

I take it he’s not doing his old Saturday Night Live terrorist routine ( you know, the one where he played several terrorists, Ahsheetz Mbed, Iwanna Fugya …).

What he should do is go back to making movies, not spreading misinformation.

Oh, and “just in” from Clinton, to show the difference between Clinton and Obama — she announced silently, on her blog, that Jack Nicholson endorsed her. He went on a radio show to discuss her.

That’s why I can respect Clinton. Those that support her make it clear, in discussion, why. They don’t have to climb on a stage and give grand, factually incorrect speeches. They go onto radio shows, talk in private, and spread the word without making a huge scene.

Obama marches them out on stage, almost beginning a roll call because he knows that he cannot stand on his own. He has to be propped up by Michelle, Oprah, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Robert DeNiro, Caroline Kennedy, Stevie Wonder, and countless others.

Though Clinton has gotten many endorsements, young and old, she does not have to broadcast them from the mountain top.

I have just lost respect for DeNiro as well as Oprah.
I too am a free woman and I resent so called celebrities trying to convince me who to vote for.
It should be outlawed that they cannot be politically involved. There are too many naive people who will vote because of the influence these personalities have. Of course, that is the point, right Obama??

This is a race for the Presidency, and Obama is making a red carpet event. He has yet to be specific, and I am sick of his rhetoric for change…….When all the hype dies down and the celebs have gone, how are you going to get the job done???? Charisma, and hype will not do it.

Am I the only one who caught this during the last debate!!! Obama said that we don’t need someone with experience on day one…We need someone who can be right on day one.

Most successful people in the world have become successful because of trial and error, taking risks, getting up when you’re knocked down et-cetera.

Regarding her vote on Iraq…Hillary voted based on the information at the time that she thought was correct. If that information was correct and we didn’t do anything…Obama would then have voted to do nothing and we would have watched Iraq wipe out Israel and Kuwait and millions of his own people. Obama choose to NOT get tough with a known, proven killer!!!

I worked places in management where after a few years, i was able to run that company…Hillary was in the White house for 8 years…she knows how it works.
Obama is inexperienced to lead this country. I worked with a man like him once. Great presence, talked a good talk but, when it came down to it…his inexperience hurt the department and ultimately because of his being a “poser” we lost a lot of good people because they were teaching him everything and he was teaching us nothing. What can Obama teach us…how can he mentor us…what are his successes that make him so great…there aren’t any.

Lastly, again, am I the only one who caught this…Obama said he will surround himself with good people because he won’t always be right!!! WOW!! But I thought he will be right from day one!!

I’d rather have Bill as an adviser than anyone else at this point!! Hillary has proved she has what it takes to run this country!!

LibraMan, I haven’t seen many catch that so far. I also caught it along with other errors, including Obama’s insinuation that he VOTED against Iraq. He did no such thing, he merely gave a speech while running for Senator against the war. He even said, in 2006, that he did not have the benefit of the intelligence and it could have changed his mind.

If these celebrities were standing up for hungry children you would admire them. Now Robert Deniro is standing up for someone he believes will make America, and the world, a better place, and you think it’s wrong. I am a white, 39 year old female who values the priviledge to vote. I speak for Barack Obama whenever I can. Is that OK with you, or can only famous people not have a say. I believe you are underestimating all voters and their ability to make up their own minds. I believe wholeheartedly in Obama hope, and YES WE CAN.

Comment by Jay

Elizabeth, do you realize you just made absolutely no sense?

DeNiro must be desperate for attention…go back to making movies you moron!!

What a crock this is starting to be. Is this a Presidential election or a Celebrity election? Obama is turning this election into a circus and he is the biggest clown of all!!

Comment by Princess Di

I never have liked DeNiro as an actor and this gives me a better reason not to like him as a person. Talk about a has been!! Where do they find these people?

Comment by CThomas

ROFLMAO. For someone preaching change Obama got a funny way of displaying it. He is knee deep in the Rezko/Chicago crooked politics scandal. He has missed several key votes, liberal votes that could have tarnished his phony moderate reachout. He has sided up with the General Betrayus faction (another vote he skipped)/ He has joined forces with old school leftist Teddy Kennedy the most polarizing politician in both parties. And now he has taken on “Wag the Dog” Deniro into the fold. Obama is all about no change and will be just as polarizing with his extreme liberal stances as GW Bush is currently. What a joke!

Comment by goldenstate

Why should anyone care who DeNiro endorses? As we’ve seen in past elections, celebrity endorsements don’t matter.

Wow this is a real Obama bashing board….

Jay your polls certainly show different than mine….

Comment by Huey DE

Bill O’reilly you should be ashamed of yourself. By allowing Huckabee to spew his negative agenda against Romney last night on your show, you sir are a PinHead.

Why is it that although McCain and Romney are both leading Huckabee in nearly every state and McCain is the supposed “front-runner” that the only person Huckabee seems to be running against is Mitt Romney?

Why does he never talk about McCain’s record, and point out the reasons why he thinks he is a better candidate than McCain? He does not ever take issue with McCain’s record or positions, but is continuously taking shots at Romney!

You have to ask yourself why that is…..and the answer becomes pretty clear that Huckabee realizes he will not win the nomination, but hopes that by staying in the race and helping McCain to win, that McCain will look down favorably on him and give him the VP nod!

Well, I’m afraid it’s going to backfire on him, because conservatives are on to his political tactics. And they are rallying behind Romney in a big way!!!

HUCKABEE WANTS MCCAIN TO WIN, AND IS HOPING FOR A VP PLACE ON THE TICKET……….IF THAT’S WHAT YOU WANT, VOTE FOR HIM!

IF YOU WANT A CONSERVATIVE PRESIDENT WHO WILL LEAD THIS COUNTRY WITH VALUES AND ABILITY, AND AN UNMATCHED RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT AND SUCCESS IN FIXING BIG PROBLEMS AND DOING WHAT IT TAKES TO GET THE JOB DONE!!!

VOTE FOR STRONG, NEW, LEADERSHIP……..FOR A SHAKE-UP IN WASHINGTON……….FOR REAL SOLUTIONS TO REAL PROBLEMS…………FOR ECONOMIC KNOWLEDGE!!!!!

Jason, the polls I use are not singular — I don’t pay attention to Zogby and ignore another like you do. My information comes from multiple polls.

Comment by Larry

Well, it’s time for action not talk. Seems like some of you have found a wonderful forum to express your bias opinions. All of the bashing going on here will not have an effect on the people who will actually go to the polls today.

Now, please listen to the people, they will have their chance to speak for themselves, and not have their views summed up by the media’s perspective. We will see if all of your predictions are correct. The political process is what it is and we are part of it. Everyone can participate in the process.

Our people parish for the lack of Knowledge. Educate yourself and become informed. Stop, Look, Listen and Pay Attention to the results. The People will speak today! “We Shall See” said the blind man.

DeNiro is right up there with Ted Kennedy, I can hear them both whispering to each other ” hey, did you bring your flask with you?” What a good example for our Youth!!

Comment by Stomp It

I thought I heard Deniro whisper to Ted ” Hey, how did you get away with murdering your mistress?”

If you look at both sides intelligently Obama is the best presidential candidate. We need an overhaul in the white house and a new set of eyes and initiatives in the whitehouse. People need to stop looking into the past and start embracing what the future has instore for us. Its called social change and people are scared of change but its part of social evolution. Stop istening to what your grandfather went through and start thinking about what your kids are going to go through. Obama is the man!!!

Comment by Sherry

Obama is no man!! He is a whiner that chooses to get involved with people like Rezko, and then to get the attention off of himself he sends our youth into Clinton rallies to start shiat as he sits back with Kennedy drinking a beer and discussing the perfect homicide that Ted got away with.

And you call him a man, ha?

Guys make sure you check out the article “The Intoxication of Inspiration” on the blogzine SAVAGE POLITICS (not related to Mike Savage) at http://www.savagepolitics.com. It is awesome……everyone should read it before voting.

Jay et al — Go someplace else to vent your bashing spittle. Don’t hide behind the Internet blogs. The negative comments about a man (or woman) willing to sacrifice his/her time and life to lead this country with all the problems we are now facing, just makes me want to vote for that person even more. The coments serve NO PURPOSE other than to see your name in print. It’s called cyber bullying. Get a life and do something pro-active. Actually, I just got back from doing so. Here’s to my man.

I find no inspiration in Obama due to his record…He hasn’t done anything amazing. He is just a regular person just like Hillary is. The difference I see is that people are being made to believe he can bring big change, (by people like Oprah) when in fact, his goals are no better than Hillary’s, just different. Look at the Governor of Illinois and his better than thou leadership…Look at the Cook County President Todd Stroger that Obama endorsed. Is that change…is that inspiration, no it’s more of the same. He is a politician just like all of them. I can’t vote for him because I think he doesn’t even believe in himself. I truly feel he is just making an attempt because he thinks he is in the right place at the right time and he was talked into going for it (nothing wrong with that). I have faith that the majority of Americans will do the right thing and that is to vote for Hillary.
