Romney Attends Mormon Leader’s Funeral

Salt Lake City, UT—

Mitt Romney stepped off the campaign trail this morning to attend the funeral of the president of the Mormon Church, Gordon B. Hinckley. Sat next to his wife, Ann in the 2nd row of the VIP section he was right behind U.S. Senate Majority leader Harry Reid,–also a member of the LDS church.

Romney sons Matt and Josh also attended the funeral. Josh took a redeye flight to Salt Lake City from Alaska where he was campaigning for his father.

Thousands of mourners joined the Romney family at the Latter Day Saints Conference Center to mark the passing of the spiritual leader. The service began with the next presumptive head of the church, Thomas S. Monson. Various family members and church leaders read from Mormon scripture, secular poetry like Longfellow, and even a message of condolence from President Bush and the First Lady. They praised Hinckley known as the “great communicator” for explaining and publicizing the religion to the American people. Most notably, in a 1996 interview telling Mike Wallace, “We are not a weird people.” Almost all of the speakers also spoke of the leader’s great humor.

Yesterday while campaigning in Denver Romney reflected on his relationship with Hinckley:

“During the Olympics I had the chance to meet with him two or three times, and to discuss matters about the Olympics and he was gracious and generous in his support.  And prior to running for office I got the privilege of meeting with him one more time and with a twinkle in his eye, he made the comment,” Romney told reporters, ‘“if you decide to run and you win it will be a great experience, if you run and lose it’ll also be a great experience.’ And he’s a man I respect a great deal and I want to pay my respects to his family and acknowledge the importance of his life in my own life.”

There was no mention of Romney during the ninety-minute service. But, when he entered the conference center mourners surrounded him and shook his hand.

With Super Tuesday just three days away, Romney did eight local satellite interviews this morning and gets back on the trail right after the funeral, traveling to Minnesota before heading to Chicago and St. Louis tomorrow.

It was a touching funeral service for a giant of a man. President Hinckley always saw the best in people. His love and grace will be sorely missed.

News on the street is McCain has cancer. He has threatened law suits against anyone who leaks the information. Is this true?

Comment by kp

Huckabee is a crook!!! He joins the likes of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Harry Reid on the list of Ten Most Corrupt Politicians of 2007 awarded by Judicial Watch (non-profit organization who does not endorse any candidate).

Comment by Dan

Let us look at McCain’s conservative credentials:
-IMMIGRATION: he wrote the bill granting amnesty to illegal immigrants (co-sponsored by Ted Kennedy)
-SOCIAL SECURITY: he voted to give your social security money to illegal immigrants
-TAXES: he voted against the Bush tax cuts multiple times (he has since flip-flopped and has campaigned as a lifelong tax-cutter)
-RHETORIC: he routinely engages in Democratic class warfare against big companies in America, particularly the “evil” drug companies who research cures to debilitating diseases for a profit
-ECONOMY: as recently as December 2007 he admitted “he does not know the economy very well” and needed to get better at it
-1ST AMENDMENT: he wrote the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill that was declared to be an unconstitutional infringement of the 1st Amendment (co-sponsored by ultra-liberal Democrat Russ Feingold)
-2ND AMENDMENT: he was called the “worst 2nd amendment candidate” by the president of the NRA
-ENERGY TAX: wrote a bill (co-sponsored by his buddy Lieberman) imposing a massive tax on energy which, according to the Department of Energy, would drastically raise the price of gasoline and put 300,000 Americans out of work
-GLOBAL WARMING: supports radical global warming legislation which involved him voting with every Democrat; think only America is responsible to take action, not other superpowers
-JUDGES: he joined forces with Democrats (Gang of 14) to block the Senate Republican’s attempt to confirm conservative, strict constructionist judges; also said Alito was too conservative for his liking
-WAR ON TERROR: fought with Hillary Clinton to demand that terrorists be given a full American trial
-GAY MARRIAGE: he joined liberals to fight against a federal marriage amendment supporting the institution of traditional marriage
-CHRISTIANS: campaigning in 2000, he famously described Christian leaders as “agents of intolerance”
-PRO-LIFE: he filed an amicus brief against pro-life advocates in Wisconsin
-BI-PARTISANSHIP: he met with leading Democrats in 2004 to discuss the possibility of being John Kerry’s Vice-President; publicly considered leaving the Republican Party in 2001 after he lost the primary
-PROFESSIONAL ETHICS: ringleader of the infamous Keating 5 ethical scandal which cost US tax payers $160 billion (Google it)
-PERSONAL ETHICS: McCain cheated on his first wife after she had a severe accident that left her partially disabled. He then divorced her and married his multi-millionaire mistress, whose daddy bought McCain a spot in the Congress

I have great respect for Mitt Romney. His family is an amazing example to us all. They have been involved in many charities and they have done much good for many unfortunate persons. I am choosing Romney because of his economic expertise, values, strong family, optimism, policies on Iraq and immigration, and his proven track record of success.

It was a wonderful service. They did not show Mitt there at - which was appropriate.

I think the fact that he stopped campaigning to attend shows a great deal about the values of this man.

If O=only Gordon B. Hinckley could have run for president!

ROMNEY SUPPORTERS (please read)!!!!!!!!

We need to start exposing McCain’s 2 big personal scandals to tip the scales to Mitt. This guy will say and do anything to sabotage Romney and it’s about time he give him a bit of his own medicine.

We need to expose:

1) McCain cheating on his disabled wife with a mistress half his age, McCain divorcing his disabled wife then marrying his millionaire mistress, and then having her rich daddy buy his seat in Congress.

2) Keating 5 ethics scandal and how McCain was the only member of the rebuked 5 not to resign his seat in Congress.

Mitt has had too much class to bring this up, but we must! The American people, who know nothing about these scandals, are evidently under the delusion that McCain is a straight-talker and man of honor. We must spend today spreading the TRUTH of why he is not.

Dan,you don’t want to go there, there are things like being arrested because he thought he was above the law, when launching his boat in front of the authorities, after being told it didn’t have the proper registration or the fact that he went on that vulgar tirade, lashing out at a traffic cop, during the Olympics, and as far as marriage goes,if He’s so happily married why is He working so hard to attain that Celestial planet near the star of Kolab, where He will have many wives.
Now Dan you can find that info at http://www.saintsalive.com,and for those of you that don’t undertand what the star of Kolab is or who Elohim is check it out on this site and it will explain hat they’re a cult

You want to know what Romney stands for? The video below is of a news broadcast talking about Romney’s new tactic to win the White House. Is this who you want as your President?

Comment by Joseph

Romney lost Iowa after spending millions. Romney lost New Hampshire after spending millions. Romney lost SC after spending millions. Romney lost Florida after spending millions. What does that tell you? He is good at losing and spending millions while doing it. I am sure he can spend your money just as well as he spent not only his, but the $730 million of Massachusetts taxpayers money.

Romney won Wyoming which no other candidate campaigned for, none. Romney won Nevada which only Ron Paul contested. Romney won Michigan which is where he was born and his father was a 3 term Governor. Of course he should of won those.

Huckabee is statistically TIED with Romney nationally according to the RCP average. If you look at polls for Super Tuesday, Huckabee is ahead of Romney in more of them than he is behind. So exactly who is splitting the vote here?

Comment by J Scott

To Mike Huckabee

Mike, the press and the conservative talk show hosts that are saying you should back out and let Romney and McCain duke it out. That would be the honorable thing to do.

Just looking at the popular vote in all of the primaries so far, has McCain and Romney right next to each other and you, Mike Huckabee, with less than half of either of the leaders. Do the right thing and give it up. Help save the conservative values of the Republican Party from a McCain ticket.

When McCain speaks of “reaching across the isle” does he mean he reaches across the isle to try to appease Republicans? Because, the Democrats surely have their arms around McCain in a strong, loving embrace.

Mike, you have been stiffed at the alter and just don’t realize it yet. McCain is just using you as a stooge to split the conservative vote, but he will spit you out like curdled milk once he has the nomination locked up.

(Joseph, your comments are ignorant no matter which article you paste them under.)

Maine voters are choosing Governor Romney today, and others of us are talking up your candidacy with our friends and neighbors because we SO STRONGLY DESIRE to have a NOBLE, HONEST MAN like GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY LEADING OUR PARTY AND OUR NATION.

MEN & WOMEN WHO STUDY THE FACTS AND VOTE USING THEIR BRAINS WILL VOTE FOR GOV. ROMNEY. BUT ARE THERE ENOUGH OF US TO OUTVOTE THOSE WHO VOTE BASED ON THE POLLS, THE MEDIA, AND EMOTION??? If not, we will all have to suffer the consequences together.

Comment by Tildawen

On Super Tuesday let conservative voices be heard on the ballots not on polls or media. Vote For Mitt Romney!!! McCain’s liberal views are not whats Republican partys all about. We conservative will be heard on the ballots.

Mitt is not a Creedal Christian. However, he does believe in the Jesus Christ of the New Testament:
The Church of Jesus Christ (LDS) is often accused by Evangelical pastors of not believing in Christ and, therefore, not being a Christian religion. This article http://mormonsarechristian.blogspot.com/ helps to clarify such misconceptions by examining early Christianity’s comprehension of baptism, the Godhead, the deity of Jesus Christ and His Atonement.

The Church of Jesus Christ (LDS) adheres more closely to First Century Christianity and the New Testament than any other denomination. For example, Harper’s Bible Dictionary entry on the Trinity says “the formal doctrine of the Trinity as it was defined by the great church councils of the fourth and fifth centuries is not to be found in the New Testament.”

One Baptist blogger stated “99 percent of the members of his Baptist church believe in the Mormon (and Early Christian) view of the Trinity. It is the preachers who insist on the Nicene Creed definition.” It seems to me the reason the pastors denigrate the Church of Jesus Christ (LDS) is to protect their flock (and their livelihood).
Evangelicals should read:

I agree that it shows what values Mitt Romney has - knowing that he has little time to campaign before Tuesday and understanding that many (the ignorant and foolish) still “worry” about his Mormonism - he still took the time to go to the funeral of the President of the Church. Gordon B. Hinckley was a great man - whether you recognized him as a prophet or just a man - he did wonderful things for the world. He will be greatly missed.

Comment by valerie

Butch - you are certainly among the ranks of the Huckabee supporters! Why should anyone really care what the Mormons think happens AFTER death? What counts for those outside of their church is the values it’s members put forth! Mormons are good, decent, hard working people. They are encouraged to work in their communities and help ALL mankind -not just Mormons. I agree with the earlier post that suggests you should grow up!

Ian,learn to face facts,everything I stated,about wives came out of Mormon literature……

Comment by Butch

Valerie, just pointing out that it is a cult…cultists are lead by a living Prophet in this case that states to his people that He can’t be taken out of polotics, and you have a Bishop that is bound to him thu the covenant….So,Romneys decisions in some ways will be attatched to theProphet…..Before you respond check it out…there’s been too many lies told to protect Romney already

Comment by robinbl

Sorry to jump in on this post late in the game, but I wonder why some people insist on calling the LDS church a cult. Are you aware that it is the fourth largest church in America? And one of the fastest growing in the world? A cult is a religion based upon a “prophet” who convinces people to follow him originally through charisma or the power of his personal connection with them, and then doesn’t allow people to leave when they come to disagree with him. He alone holds supreme control over their lives and over the doctrines of the church. When the leader is removed, through death, or getting arrested or something, the cult almost always collapses.

Most mormons never meet the prophet or most of the other general authorities of the church in person, not even the ones in Utah. They might go to a meeting and hear them speak, but they consider themselves lucky if they get a handshake afterwards. That is not enough influence to “brainwash” anyone. Also, do you seriously think that 13 million people across the globe could be persuaded to enter in a “cult” that took away their free agency and ability to control their own lives? Hardly. If following a living religious leader is a cult, then the Hebrews under Moses were a cult, and the Catholic church today is a cult.

Also, the LDS church has been around for almost 200 years now, surviving the turnover of sixteen presidents, and has kept its key doctrines the same for that whole time. Yes, I know that there are some interesting tidbits by Brigham Young and there’s that whole racial issue, but those tidbits are, believe it or not, not main doctrines that the church teaches. They are not taught in Sunday School or by the missionaries, not out of secrecy, but because they are not officially sanctioned doctrine. They are speculation. I doubt that you will find any other religion in which the key doctrines have remained so consistent throughout that length of time.

And last, no member of the Church is prevented from leaving with force or threats. We of course do what we can to convice them not to leave, but they are in no way physically or emotionally threatened when they disagree with the teachings of the church. Sorry to go on a little long, but I get rather infuriated when people try to use scare tactics to defend their disagreement with a religion. Disagree all you want, but when you start pulling out that scary “cult” word, any argument you make goes down the toilet.
