The Senator, The Governor, The Mayor

California’s movie-star Governor Arnold Scwharzenegger is throwing his support behind John McCain—giving the Senator his second major endorsement in less than 24 hours.

On Wednesday, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani dropped out of the race and endorsed McCain. Both Rudy and Ah-nuld accompanied McCain on a tour of a Los Angeles solar technology company Thursday. Afterward, a reporter asked whether the support of the governor and mayor do anything to help the Senator with the conservative wing of the Republican party.

Gov. Schwarzenegger explained why he decided to endorse McCain, when just days ago he said he was staying out of it.

The endorsement was McCain’s only public event of the day. That means he spent almost two days in California, and never held a campaign event where he actually met voters face to face. A McCain aide said the only thing the campaign wanted circulated Thursday was the image of the Senator with the governor.

Democrats say McCain nearly abandoned GOP

By Bob Cusack

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was close to leaving the Republican Party in 2001, weeks before then-Sen. Jim Jeffords (Vt.) famously announced his decision to become an Independent, according to former Democratic lawmakers who say they were involved in the discussions.

I had the opportunity to go to Michigan five days before their primary and volunteer in Romney campaign headquarters. While in a small call room, we were surprised by a visit by Denny Hastert, well respected, former speaker of the house. He spoke on a personal level about his years of interaction with Romney and his great admiration and complete support of Mitt. As he spoke emotion welled up within me confirming what I had already known. That without question, Mitt Romney is an amazing MAN. An honest patriotic driven man. With a just as an amazing women behind him.
WHY IS THAT NOT NEWS HEADLINES???
Could it be that we have men and women in high places of power that don’t want a “good” man the spoil things for them?
And is it possible that the media is controlled by them?

Are we witnessing the end of conservatism, or will we unite and defeat John McCain?
TIme to get behind Romney all the way folks……
send in some money, call some friends, and try to sway the Huckster voters, who need to get over the difference in others religious beliefs, I’m afraid that religious bigotry is going to destroy this land where our forefathers fought for “freedom of Religion”, not “Validation of Religion”

Go Mitt!

Comment by Cephas

Folks,

I’ve been bloigging about this for nearly a month now, I remember when it happened. McCain can’t be trusted to stick to conservative principles. Never has been, never will be!

http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/democrats-say-mccain-nearly-abandoned-gop-2007-03-28.html

Here’s a quote or two from the story:

Democrats had contacted Jeffords and then-Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-R.I.) in the early months of 2001 about switching parties, but in McCain’s case, they said, it was McCain’s top strategist who came to them….

Downey added, “It’s my hope that John McCain is the Republican nominee because from my perspective, although I think Democrats are going to win, if they don’t, McCain is the sort of man I would feel comfortable [with] as the president of the United States. I’m not trying to hurt him.”

Daschle said he doesn’t believe the new revelations will hurt McCain. “Everyone has known John McCain to be independent, to take his own course. That was a time in his life when he at least weighed the possibility of becoming an independent, but he rejected it, so I can’t imagine that can ever be used as a political liability.”
Unquote

If Downy and Daschle like and want McCain to win, WHY ARE WE EVEN GIVING HIM THE TIME OF DAY!

McCain isn’t a Maverick he’s a snake in the grass.

It’s interesting to watch the classic conservative vs. neoconservative fight that’s going on.

Sean Hannity endorsed Mitt last night on his show and on his radio show yesterday afternoon. Who do you think the real conservative is in the race now??? Its not McCain or Huckabee, although Sean did say he respected Huckabee.

Comment by Dan

Let us look at McCain’s conservative credentials:
-IMMIGRATION: he wrote the bill granting amnesty to illegal immigrants (co-sponsored by Ted Kennedy)
-SOCIAL SECURITY: he voted to give your social security money to illegal immigrants
-TAXES: he voted against the Bush tax cuts multiple times (he has since flip-flopped and has campaigned as a lifelong tax-cutter)
-RHETORIC: he routinely engages in Democratic class warfare against big companies in America, particularly the “evil” drug companies who research cures to debilitating diseases for a profit
-ECONOMY: as recently as December 2007 he admitted “he does not know the economy very well” and needed to get better at it
-1ST AMENDMENT: he wrote the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill that was declared to be an unconstitutional infringement of the 1st Amendment (co-sponsored by ultra-liberal Democrat Russ Feingold)
-2ND AMENDMENT: he was called the “worst 2nd amendment candidate” by the president of the NRA
-ENERGY TAX: wrote a bill (co-sponsored by his buddy Lieberman) imposing a massive tax on energy which, according to the Department of Energy, would drastically raise the price of gasoline and put 300,000 Americans out of work
-GLOBAL WARMING: supports radical global warming legislation which involved him voting with every Democrat; think only America is responsible to take action, not other superpowers
-JUDGES: he joined forces with Democrats (Gang of 14) to block the Senate Republican’s attempt to confirm conservative, strict constructionist judges
-WAR ON TERROR: fought with Hillary Clinton to demand that terrorists be given a full American trial
-GAY MARRIAGE: he joined liberals to fight against a federal marriage amendment supporting the institution of traditional marriage
-CHRISTIANS: campaigning in 2000, he famously described Christian leaders as “agents of intolerance”
-PRO-LIFE: he filed an amicus brief against pro-life advocates in Wisconsin
-BI-PARTISANSHIP: he met with leading Democrats in 2004 to discuss the possibility of being John Kerry’s Vice-President
-PROFESSIONAL ETHICS: ringleader of the infamous Keating 5 ethical scandal which cost US tax payers $160 billion (Google it)
-PERSONAL ETHICS: McCain cheated on his first wife after she had a severe accident that left her partially disabled. He then divorced her and married his multi-millionaire mistress, whose daddy bought McCain a spot in the Congress

If you look on factcheck.org today, you will see that while Romney smugly accused McCain of getting the facts wrong, it was actually Romney who was distorting the truth. Also, as far as the timelines go, all McCain was really trying to say was that he risked his reputation by supporting the surge and all that went with it, while Romney protected himself with the answer he gave in April. You guys call McCain a liberal, but I see a lot of John Kerry characteristics in Romney. I wasn’t thrilled with the way McCain conducted himself in the debate - to be honest. He practically has this thing locked up, and all he needed to do was coast at the debate. But, think about this - when you have been in the trenches of war for as long as he was, maybe - just maybe - you develop a lifetime mentality of never letting your guard down.

I’m sorry so many of you feel so negatively about McCain. I worked for him in Michigan, voted for him in Michigan, and am proud to say so. I am so tired of the conservative vs liberal fighting. Can’t we all just get along???

Comment by Doug

I know that this message will not likley hit home to some Hucksters… but You guys have to understand, Romney is your last chance for a true conservative. I’m sure you hare thinking to yourselves, “That guy is a Cultist” trust me if he were a cultist you would have seen that by now in the things that he does… but really take a look at Romney… Dont let McCain’s media machine Steamroller you and us as well We need to unite the people behind the guy that will help us the most. Its not even a matter of beating the Democrats Its a matter of standing up for conservative principles. This is what we need! Conservatives UNITE!

ROMNEY 2008!

Comment by Doug

Patty the problem with McCain’s comment was not the picute he was tring to paint it was the fact that he had the arrogance to try and put words in Mitt’s mouth. If he was really trying to paint a picute of “look guys I staked my whole reputation on this claim and this guy didnt take a side” then he should have said that much. But McCain didnt say that he was saying that Romney supported a SPESIFIC timetable for WITHDRAWL. when it was obvious that Romney was talking about benchmarks and timetables for PROGRESS not a “pull everyone out” Withdrawl! This is something General Patraeus has been talking about and something McCain SUPPORTS! he even said as much on Anderson Cooper’s interveiw on CNN! Dont try to shove the “Bad Guy” note to Romney Lord knows his opposition has tried that all too much, has it stuck? not really, WHY? because he is not the “Bad Guy” that some people think he is. You want a “Bad Guy” Take a look at McLovin’ with that shark-like grin of his.

Comment by skies11

McCain stayed at RINO simply for electability reasons in AZ - he is NOT conservative.

Evaluate candidates on one criteria: which is most closely aligned with the Constitution.

Then you’ll know who’s the best candidate for POTUS.

Comment by Patty

Doug,

Actually he did say that. When they came back to him, he said, “You should have just said No.” What he meant was, don’t give long explanations that you can use to manipulate the subject later - just say “no.” McCain also said that the buzzword was timelines. Romney tried to use the word timelines and put it into a different context, also to protect himself for future debate on the subject. One thing I can say about Romney is that he is very smart - he knows what he’s doing now and did then. But don’t think for a minute that he is the honest guy here. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy, but neither is John McCain. They are both fighting for their lives, and Romney is just more believable even when he isn’t being truthful. Kind of Bill Clintonesque. I am going to use the same argument that I will use if it is a McCain/Obama race, and that is - do you want “great talk” or “straight talk.” McCain is not a great speaker. You either have that skill or you don’t. Romney has it. Obama has it. Kennedy had it. Bill Clinton had it. That is not what I use to measure who I want for Commander in Chief. And as far as uniting conservatives, it’s a great idea, but not practical in today’s political climate.

Who do you think won the Republican debate in California 1/30/2008 ?

From the DEBATE held in California 1/30/08. POLITICO.COM interviewed several (11) women who sat down before the debate and asked them who their candidate or leaning to and after watching the debate again asked them about who IS THE CANDIDATE that impressed them and their view had changed dramatically.

When I see John McCain line up one more endorsement I say to myself, “There’s one more favor that he is going to owe to someone eventually.” Washington is in business to promote itself. The establishment by and large has gotten behind McCain most likely because they owe him favors, and now he owes them. Altruism and Washington do not walk hand in hand.

Wake up America. Mitt Romney doesn’t owe anyone anything. He can go to Washington and fix what is broken, which is just about everything. Approval rates for both the President and Congress are extremely low. If you vote in the Washington insider you will get more of the same.

Change must come from outside of Washington by someone that is not in other people’s pockets.

On the lighter side of politics, go to http://www.conservativesformitt.blogspot.com to see a hilarious Princess Bride parody involving Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. It’s amazing how similar saying Huckabee looks to saying Humperdink…

The Republican Party bigwigs seem to be lining up behind McCain and leaving Romney out to dry.

The result will be another old, has-been, Bob Dole-like candidate that won’t have a chance in the general election.

Not to mention that the majority of Americans DON’T support the war and that many Republicans DON’T like McCain.

Meanwhile the Democrats will be running either a woman or an African American, breaking new ground, attracting new voters, and the Republicans will be stuck with their has-been candidate just because they think it’s “his turn.”

Sometimes you gotta wonder if the Republicans WANT to lose. Or are they that incompetent?

Patty,

Maybe Mitt should have just said no but he wanted to do 2 things by saying what he said… one he wanted to show people that he wanted PROGRESS in Iraq and not simply just leaving our troops over there forever, and 2 he was stating quite clearly, and you can argue this all you want but everyone will tell you that you are wrong, that he was not supporting a SPESIFIC timetable but more progressive Benchmarks and (buzzword) Timetables that should be kept secret!. John McCain said that he would show the american people by november “Significant Withdrawls” I bring this up because it was the exact words that he used RIGHT AFTER he slammed Romney for “supporting timetables”… what does this say to you? That if John McCain is a bad liar he gives bad liars a bad name. Mitt may not be honest ALL the time but I trust what he says WAY more than McCain. If McCain wanted to support General Patraeus the way he says he does then he actually agrees with what Romney said. Because Patraeus’ plan actually calls for Benchmarks and Timetables, not to be disclosed.

I dont think McCain will win the Delegates needed for the Convention and then they will have to have a contested Convention, since the GoP Base doesnt support McCain this time it will be ONLY conservatives that will vote and I dont think McCain will pull it off. Romney just has to stay in long enough for McCain to open his mouth again and keep sinking his own ship with his “straight talk”.

Doug I have to agree with Patty on this one. One of the reasons why so many people think iran is not a threat is because they read the headlines and accepted it on face value without bothering to actually READ the NIE report which, taken as a whole, completely contradicts the headlines and that particular point of view. The best Romney supports could argue IMO is that Romney’s comments are open to interpretation, but I read the transcript of the interview, I watched the interview on Youtube to make sure it was being reported correctly and I see nothing in his comments that lead me to believe he was talking about “milestones for progress”. You are free to embrace Romney’s explanation but it sure sounds to ME like he is talking about a timetable for withdrawl.

Frankly, I don’t really care if he is or isn’t as the reality is that we are not leaving iraq regardless of WHO gets elected. Even if Hillary or Obama get elected we aren’t leaving Iraq and they know it good and well. Both of them concede thet we will need some sort of military presence to protect our interests. Well, come on…that essentially means “we’re staying”. So I don’t really care if he said it or not because the “I’ll get us out of Iraq” line is a pipe dream first and a political strategy based on gaining votes with no basis in reality.

Doug I think you are struggling with reality here, brother. 1,081 delegates will be given on Super Tuesday and conservative estimates have McCain grabbing 630 of them and Romney aggressively getting about 360. That means prior to the convention Romney would need to get about 77% of the remaining 1,070 delegates and McCain needing 51%. Romney has three days left to turn it around or he’s toast.

What a surprise, the mayor, the governor, the senator. How about titled it as Juan Mexccain’s circle of Washington friends. You media are so disgusting. I thought Fox news supposed to be fair, but I don’t see any fairness in this. You hardly give Romney any coverage, it is always Juan Mexccain. Governor Romney has been treated badly by you so called journalists. Romney not only has to defend himself from all the attacks from Mexccain and huckabee, he has to defend himself from the media as well. The game is just not being played fairly when you have so many bullies ganging up on one person, it is cheating and disgusting. I am proud of Romney for still standing tall after all this kicks and punches from Juan Mexccain, devil Huck and the liberal media. Come one guys play it fair.

100% for Romney.

Give me a break!! Romney is not a conservative. I can’t understand how anyone can trust this guy (Romney). Is it because he is RICH?

The only way that the Republican can keep the White House is if Huckabee and McCain are on the ticket (Huckabee for President and McCain for Vice President).

Romney said;

“I promised that if elected, I’d call a truce - a moratorium, if you will…I vowed to veto any legislation that sought to change the existing rules…I fully respect and will fully protect a woman’s right to choose.”

(Taken form http://www.perrspectives.com).

He raised fees, but he said he didn’t increase taxes. Give me a break!!!.
