Tonight’s GOP Debate at the Reagan Presidential Library

Simi Valley, CA

The testiest exchange had to be when John McCain and Mitt Romney got back into their sparring that started over the weekend when McCain accused Romney of wanting to set timetables for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. Romney again denied the statements, which have been proven by the media to be an unfair charge. He even accused his rival of “dirty tricks:”

“By the way, raising it a few days before the Florida primary, when there was very little time for me to correct the record, when the question that was most frequently asked is, ‘Oh, you’re for a specific date of withdrawal,’ sort of falls in the kind of dirty tricks that I think Ronald Reagan would have found to be reprehensible.

But, that didn’t stop McCain from insisting it was true and accusing Romney of not supporting the troop surge in Iraq:

“He said he wanted a timetable. Before that, we have to understand that we lost the 2006 election and the Democrats thought that they had a mandate. They thought they had a mandate to get us out of Iraq. And I was prepared to sacrifice whatever was necessary in order to stand up for what I believed in. Now, in December of 2006, after the election, Governor Romney was asked what he thought about the surge. He said, at that time, “I won’t weigh in. I’m a governor.’ At the time, he didn’t want to weigh in because he was a governor.”

The Romney campaign admits the charges could have hurt Romney in Florida, but that he was able to get his point across and that the false accusations may hurt McCain in the long-term.

I haven’t seen that much of McCain, but the times I have seen him, it’s surprising to me the snipy gotcha type comments he uses. He plays right into his opponents’ comments about his poor temperament. It leaves a bad taste and doesn’t look presidential. I just can’t see this with his hand on the big red button. I don’t think he’s measured or stable.

Go Romney.

I’m glad to see Romney stand up to McCain. McCain came across as snarky.

Mccain and Romney looked horrible arguing back and forth. Even with little air time, Huckabee and Paul were the winners of this debate. The other two danced around every question, while Paul and Huckabee told it like it is

Comment by Mary-Grace Cook

Why do you continuously insist on pretending that Dr. Ron Paul is not in the race?

He is a viable candidate, and it would be nice of you to treat him as such.
You are not doing your job as a media base. d

I watched the debate. Romney clearly outclasses McCain in all areas. Huckabee did pretty well too but I worry that votes for him will equate to votes for McCain. McCain is stretching in his accusations and his back-up data is coming back to haunt him. He spent most of his time trying to justify his accuasations which really are trivial (Ron Paul is correct about that). The most significant thing about them is that they are not correct and it speaks more to McCain’s character than to Romney’s.

One good thing about these more numerous early primaries is that there are more opportunities to see how people really campaign (what their character is) as well as more time between the primaries for a reaction. To come out with his accusation 2 days before the Florida primary really was reprehensible. Also reprehensible were the inaccurate push phone calls about Romney to the hispanic population and another one regarding the 2nd amendment sponsored by the McCain campaign. Most people don’t follow politics very closely so when presented with inaccurate but disturbing information about Romney they are inclined to vote against him. Fortunately, there is a little time before the next primary so Romney will be able to set the record straight.

Romney definately has an uphill battle before him, but now that we’ve seen McCain’s “character” we are counting on Romney to win. I hope a lot of people were able to see the debate. There is no question that Romney outclasses McCain. Sure McCain served in the military, which is an asset, but that doesn’t make him better for the presidency than someone else. A lot of people have served in the military and commanded there - including myself- that doesn’t mean they would be better presidents than someone else. Some of our best military leaders in history came out of the civilian sector. (Consider Lawrence Chamberlain, one of the great heros at the battle of Gettysburg - a professor who was given an officer’s commission just a short time before that battle.)

If you honestly watched all of the debates it is clear that Romney is better suited to be the president.

IT IS NOW OBVIOUS. MR. JOHN McCAN’T TOOK OFF HIS WAR HERO UNIFORM FOR A FEW MINUTES AND SHOWED THE BATTLE SCARS THAT EVEN “REPUBLICANS” CAN GET FROM BEING TOO FRIENDLY WITH LIBERALS…..

…..CAUGHT IN A LIE, MCCAIN HAD NOWHERE TO RUN BUT TO HIS MILITARY DAYS. WILL AMERICANS BE FOOLED NOW THAT THEY SEE HIS STUBBORNESS AND SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT TO BE PRESIDENT?…..

……THIS DEBATE WAS VERY REVEALING AS TO MCCAIN’S TRUE CHARACTER. DON’T BE FOOLED BY NEWS COMMENTATORS—WATCH THE DEBATE FOR YOURSELF AND MAKE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT AS TO WHICH CANDIDATE IS THE STRONGEST LEADER FOR OUR NATION DOMESTICLY, ECONOMICALLY, AND INTERNATIONALLY……

…..WOULD MCCAIN BEAT HILLARY OR OBAMA? THREE RECENT EVIDENCES TO THE CONTRARY:
1. MCCAIN WAS ENDORSED BY THE LIBERAL NEW YORK TIMES
2. BILL CLINTON GAVE HIS OWN ENDORSEMENT SAYING MCCAIN AND HILLARY GET ALONG WELL
3. MCCAIN IS NO LONGER A STRAIGHT-TALKER AFTER HIS LIE ABOUT ROMNEY RIGHT BEFORE THE FLORIDA PRIMARY

NOW WHY WOULD THE LIBERALS WANT SO BADLY TO HAVE MCCAIN BE THE NOMINEE IF THEY THOUGHT HE WOULD BEAT THEM?
……ON A MORE ENTERTAINING NOTE, CHECK OUT MCCAIN’S PRAISING ENDORSEMENT OF ROMNEY IN 2002, BACK BEFORE IT WAS POLITICALLY CONVENIENT TO HATE MITT ROMNEY:

I am afraid Mr. Romney is right, the Government is broken. It is broken so bad that a normal citizen no longer who he is, Romney, Huckabee, or any other. We have no chance of breaking into that inner circle and being what everyone is told they can be as a child, the President of the United States. BS, thats the way our forefathers invisioned it. Thats the way it is suppose to be. But, the inner circle of congressmen, senators, etc. have made it so that that can never happen. If only the nominating committees of the Republican and Democrate parties were honest, God fearing and honorable folks, could that become possible. If only they were, this process would be a wonderful thing instead of the joke on the people that it is. Only it it were still the country founded “under God”

I am greatful to Mr. Romney and Mr. Huckabee for trying their best to make changes to the country for the rest of us. They should be commended and remembered as true Americans who really wanted to do right things for our posterity. Shame on the McCains, the Clinton’s, the Kennedys, etc. who have let our nations Government become so corrupt that change is impossible. McCain won our love and adoration for his service and gained his way into a position where he could have offered great things for the people, but apparently soon became as others, dishonest and willing to do whatever necessary for self service. Our nation is truely on its way out. Only if change was possible through the Romneys of the world would our children and grand children have a chance. Maybe its time for a revolt of the people for the people, a time for the people to take the government back by firing all currently in office and starting over from scratch… maybe … just a thought. Anyway, thanks Mr. Romney for trying to make a difference. The people I guess could still get the “in crowds” attention, but what great odds that is……

Comment by Debbie Smith

I’ve been trying to warm up to McCain because of all that is at stake over the next four years and because after Florida, everyone seems to be pushing him as the inevitable Republican nominee. But after watching McCain’s debate performance - flashes of anger, arrogance, and downright nastiness - I was compelled to log on to Mitt’s website and make a donation. Mitt answered the charges hurled at him and did so in a gracious and classy manner - of course you would never get that if you just listen to the commentary after debate. Go Mitt!

Comment by Shelley~Idaho

There are times when McCain comes across a bit arrogant and acts as if he is the only one entitled to be President.

Comment by Larry - Arizona

If McCain wins the Republican nomination - there will no doubt going to be a massive exodus from the party, myself included (I’ve been reg. republican for 30 years). McCain would be a much more dangerous president than either democrat. Though it is doubtful he could beat either of them. We need to hope this can be turned around!

Comment by Chris

If everyone who wanted to vote for Huckabee just did it - he’d win the nomination. He’s the best candidate on the Republican side. Romney is the Republican version of John Kerry. He’ll never survive a Clinton assault. McCain is just too old - and boring (sorry). Huckabee has a strong conservative record (despite what Limbaugh says), is charismatic, and has the ability to pull votes from the “other” side. He got 49% of the African-American vote in Arkansas. Unheard of for a Republican. He is our best choice. Vote for him and stop worrying whether or not it’s a wasted vote. It isn’t. Romney isn’t going to beat McCain anyway, so go ahead and vote your heart.

Comment by M108

Debates are good. I hope every voter watches before they step into the booth. I have been following this election very closely for a year and I’ve become very cynical and disillusioned. American voters are like pawns in this giant political game. The media is far too influential, even though internet access is nearly ubiquitious.

I hope that people will stand up to the power hungry politicians and draw the line. They work for us, and if they don’t keep their promises or ignore the people then they need to find another job. They are the civil servants and we are the masters. Let’s keep that in check. McCain doesn’t deserve the Republican nomination. He mocks conservatism and no matter what the polls say he will not get my vote. I refuse to be a political pawn and play the political games. Conservatives are finally waking up and recognizing our foe. We will do what it takes to keep McCain from getting the nomination.

Comment by Shelley~Idaho

I agree Washington is broken and that the Washington inner circle is closing ranks against the 2 outsiders ie Romney and Huckabee. Maybe the 2 of them can team up to take Washington on?

Comment by TO CHRIS

You are living in a dream world. Huckabee is not going to win. Please accept that. You can vote your heart out, but you are just handing the nomination to AMNESTY McCain. Romney is the only one with the resources to compete against the liberal media’s darling. THe GOP is also going to need those resources to fight the Democrats in the general election. At the last reporting the Dems had $68 million more than the GOP. Is Huckabee going to make up the difference? NO. Are his supporters? NO. Even if he won the nomination it would take 15 second to convince the majority of Americans that they don’t want a president that plans to “amend the Constitution to God’s standard.” He doesn’t have even a glimmering of hope to beat Clinton/Obama.

Comment by Colby

It is clear to me that Romney has the class, experience, leadership and sheer intelligence to be the President. All McCain has going for him is “curb appeal.” People know his name. Mitt would be winning by a landslide if the majority of people REALLY knew what was going on. In my opinion, Romney is an outstanding communicator. Whether we are discussing economy, foreign affairs, illegal immigration, or Iraq, success depends on proper communication. Mitt Romney is well spoken and presidential. He is the man to get the job done.

May God bless Mitt with a Super Tuesday!

Comment by Shane

Did you notice that the market dropped when McCain won Florida? I wonder if that will continue to be the trend…?

Comment by Jay in Iowa

Please consider giving your support and vote to the true candidate you saw on the stage tonight, Governor Huckabee. He has the Reagan spirit in his sails and is our party’s Great Communicator. He is intelligent, grounded, and in touch with the average American and their concerns and needs.
What an eloquent speaker and orator! Like Reagan, he’s an experienced executive who has governed.

Of those debating tonight, Governor Huckabee simply shined as the steadfast stalwart of his beliefs and vision to better our great country. The new surge of interest and support is now moving in his direction, because he has the integrity, character, and executive leadership to move America in the right direction!

God Bless you and God Bless America! Our country has a lot of runaway problems that need to be resolved through outside leadership with a common sense approach. !

Comment by Chancey

First if you listen to the whole soundbite closely, it is obvious that Mitt does not support a “timetable for withdrawl.” It is clear he speaks of goals and reasonable timetables to reach goals in Iraq, but at no point states that he seeks a “date certain withdrawl.” If you have not, please watch on youtube. Be sure to see the entire quote and it’s context. Next, if Huck believes in consevatism he needs to step out and endorse Romney. His votes, as stated above, are a vote for McCain. It is obvious to me that conservatism as a movement would be better served by someone who has a chance. Finally, I felt that Romney conveyed his message much better than McCain. In the final question Mitt put all of his points out there and I new where he stood (I love drilling in Anwhar, and I love nuke). McCain started his response with a snip and looked like an ass. I feel that te television media is not going to give Romney a break. They are not so much being negative toward Romney, but they don’t seem to be as delighted as usual, about nailing someone like McCain. They will though, if/when McCain Faces Hillary.

Comment by Ella

I am a legal immigrant, and I have a question. What line governor Romney is talking about? As far as I know, one must have a relative or a sponsor to immigrate in the US, and it takes on average 10 years for a relative of the US citizens. That does not include uncles, cousins, etc; only mother, father, spouse, children, sisters and brothers.

Comment by Chancey

If, Ella, you are saying the line is to long. Then dont wait. Go Romney!

Comment by Taxman99

If politics is one thing, it’s fairly easy to read, and it is pretty obvious that McCain will win the nomination, and the dems will have a huge night in november. Not that I am happy about that.

I am predicting a landslide for Hillary, which will affect republican sens and reps as well since many republican voters will choose to stay home. The democrat majority will grow by leaps and bounds.

In the mainstream/DC type republicans quest to find a moderate to run against Hillary, they have fialed to take this into account.

As a sidenote, McCain, Huckabee, and Giuliani have all played the “Class-Warfare” card against Romney. And these are the best the republicans (???) could put up. Well, Screw you and all the rest Mr. Mayor!

Comment by Dan

Let us look at McCain’s conservative credentials:
-IMMIGRATION: he wrote the bill granting amnesty to illegal immigrants (co-sponsored by Ted Kennedy)
-SOCIAL SECURITY: he voted to give your social security money to illegal immigrants
-TAXES: he voted against the Bush tax cuts multiple times (he has since flip-flopped and has campaigned as a lifelong tax-cutter)
-RHETORIC: he routinely engages in Democratic class warfare against big companies in America, particularly the “evil” drug companies who research cures to debilitating diseases for a profit
-ECONOMY: as recently as December 2007 he admitted “he does not know the economy very well” and needed to get better at it
-1ST AMENDMENT: he wrote the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill that was declared to be an unconstitutional infringement of the 1st Amendment (co-sponsored by ultra-liberal Democrat Russ Feingold)
-2ND AMENDMENT: he was called the “worst 2nd amendment candidate” by the president of the NRA
-ENERGY TAX: wrote a bill (co-sponsored by his buddy Lieberman) imposing a massive tax on energy which, according to the Department of Energy, would drastically raise the price of gasoline and put 300,000 Americans out of work
-GLOBAL WARMING: supports radical global warming legislation which involved him voting with every Democrat; think only America is responsible to take action, not other superpowers
-JUDGES: he joined forces with Democrats (Gang of 14) to block the Senate Republican’s attempt to confirm conservative, strict constructionist judges
-WAR ON TERROR: fought with Hillary Clinton to demand that terrorists be given a full American trial
-GAY MARRIAGE: he joined liberals to fight against a federal marriage amendment supporting the institution of traditional marriage
-CHRISTIANS: campaigning in 2000, he famously described Christian leaders as “agents of intolerance”
-PRO-LIFE: he filed an amicus brief against pro-life advocates in Wisconsin
-BI-PARTISANSHIP: he met with leading Democrats in 2004 to discuss the possibility of being John Kerry’s Vice-President
-PROFESSIONAL ETHICS: ringleader of the infamous Keating 5 ethical scandal which cost US tax payers $160 billion (Google it)
-PERSONAL ETHICS: McCain cheated on his first wife after she had a severe accident that left her partially disabled. He then divorced her and married his multi-millionaire mistress, whose daddy bought McCain a spot in the Congress

Vote Romney. This liberal, old fraud McCain can’t fool this conservative!

Comment by James

Romney impresses me. He is optimistic, bright, and fair. Romney is the one to not only save the economy, but to save the republican party. He wins every debate. We need this man to represent us internationally. Thompson had class and Rudy had name recognition and they have both dropped out. Tancredo endorsed Romney as the immigration specialist. Huckabee is out. He ruined his bid with religion. Thompson played the religion card better than Huckabee. Ron Paul has some good ideas, but many ideas that most won’t agree with. McCain is embarrassing. I don’t like watching him. He is old and emotional and he does appear to think that he is entitled. I don’t like that. He doesn’t contrast. The man flat out lies and they are inexcusable ones. The man is also, basically, a democrat. Romney has my vote all of the way to the white house. He has the most class and knowledge of any other candidate running. I feel good when I see his family and when I hear him speak. I trust him. Best of luck to Romney on super Tuesday!

Comment by Missouri Voter's

We watched the debate with careful consideration tonite. We will be voting on tuesday and have solidified our support of Mike Huckabee, for those who say he is not electable, watch and see.
For those on the fence may I encourage you to vote your conscience, and not listen to the pundits and naysayers, Rush, Hannity and the drive_bye’s.
He is a true conservative in every sense of the word, and is a very passionate man of integrity.
I hope you will consider getting on board and supporting him.
GO MIKE!!!!!

Comment by Dane

Just a curiosity. Why does nobody talk about the only candidate that intends on following the Constitution? The only candidate that has a sound economical policy?…Ron Paul.

Comment by Janice

Another lousy debate. Huckabee had a good point when he said it wasn’t a two man race. CNN did not treat Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee fairly. Ron Paul was absolutely correct when he suggested that it was silly - all the nitpicking between Romney and McCain. Ron Paul has the best ideas. I just wish he had more opportunity to express his opinions. It is not right that the media tries to decide who we should support/elect. Fortunately, in this case, McCain and Romney just made each other look bad and made the others look good. Ron Paul - thank God he was there to offer a voice of reason and reality. It is time the media treated all of these candidates equally.

Comment by CynthiaS

Huckabee team with Romney? Haven’t you seen how he, like his favorite candidate John McClinton, holds Mormons in contempt, especially one Mormon in particular? Not a chance of that ever happening. In fact, I am confident that his motivation for hanging on despite his empty coffers is to do permanent damage Romney’s chances. He is aiding McClinton in getting the nomination, in hopes of a vice-presidential nomination. I sense that McClinton is hinting (for expediency) that it could happen, too. We shall see. Huckabee would be a good Mormon bishop or stake president if he could get over his religious bigotry, and he’s a talented preacher for the Baptists, but he is by no stretch of the imagination a great Reaganesque communicator. Only an Evangelical could feel that way, and I don’t fault them for it, but they need to get out and hear how it sounds from the outside before assuming everyone can connect with him.

Much as I dislike negative campaigning, I do feel that these are desperate times we live in, and unpleasant though it is, what a blessing that a man of proven character like Mitt Romney has the toughness to play hardball with the media-darling Washington bullies. Huckabee’s teaming up with them against him is a most foolish and blind move. He’d be better off to stand alone and maintain some self-respect, as I believe they’ll soon drop him like a hot potato when they’ve used him up. I agree with Gene above, though unfortunately I don’t state it in so gentlemanly a manner, that the political insiders have closed ranks, and are doing their best to shut non-club members out. How long it will take citizens of this nation to realize that, I don’t know, but I hope not long. Okay, enough cynicism. I’m off to work for MITT!

By the way, I can’t figure out why Romney generates so much support in the blogs, like this one here, and yet doesn’t win handily. . . Reading the blogs before Florida, I thought sure he’d win . . . Could it be that those who blog also study and read more intently, and therefore end up favoring him? Are the rest just going on the reports of their most convenient media outlet? I wish I knew.

Comment by Brett

I think Huckabee represented himself well tonight but then again the heat wasn’t on him and he didn’t have to defend himself against bold face lies. too bad the two true conservatives are going to split the votes and give McCain an easy road to the nomination which in turn will provide the democrats and easy road to the big house.

Comment by Ben - Montana

Honestly, we need to beat McCain. Romney’s the one to do it. Read some of the other comments, I don’t feel like repeating all of the reasons. Besides all of that, Mitt’s a good guy, he really does care about people. Let’s give him the chance that he deserves.

Comment by Brett

yes cynthia, most voters drift toward the opinion of the media or go with an “endorsments” opinion even though the endorser usually has a clear self serving political gain on the line. Most Voters are very lazy and simply follow the crowd/media. That’s another reason the true conservatives are in real trouble.

Comment by CynthiaS

One more thought, in answer to why nobody talks about Ron Paul . . .

A) He has big ideas, but doesn’t deal with modern realities. It’s a kind of political puritanism. A voice in the wilderness.

B) While he seems like an honest, good man, he does not have the personal demeanor to inspire broad confidence. He lacks the quickness and polish to match his passion and intelligence. (Then again, so does John McClinton, so explain that!) (Okay, I’ll explain that–J McC has more passion, and less intelligence.)

I wish his supporters could rally for Romney, but they too tend to be purists. They have my respect, in a politically pure kind of way. But alas, there is no such thing.

Comment by John Meyer

As a life-long active Republican, I’m shocked that I may actual skip voting this year if McCain is the candidate. Reagan, if he were alive today, would boot McCain to the left where he belongs.

Comment by Bert in Oregon

Note to Larry - Arizona. One way to let the rest of the country start to see McCain for the dishonorable RINO that he is would be to get out the Romney vote in Arizona next week and make it at least a close race in his own state. McCain’s “dirty tricks” in Florida showed how dishonest he really is and how “entitled” he believes himself to be. McCain would be crushed in the general election by either Obama or Hillary. If it is he or Hillary, I will be sitting out my first general election in 40 years.

Comment by T keoki

I’m a lifelong Republican that will vote for Hillary or Obama if McCain wins the nomination. Honestly, how many questions can he dodge by beating his chest and saying ‘I’m a war hero’? I really hope his last minute baseless accusations against Romney and his completely pernicious performance in the debate tonight will finally show people the liberal wolf that he is.

Comment by Kevin

Why does the media continue to give John McCain and his vice-presidential running mate Mike Huckabee a free ride?

McCain with the help of the media have attacked Romney as flip flopper negative and lacking authenticity. Yet when McCain has consistently run a dirty negative campaign which puts Bill Clinton to shame (prior to the New Hampshire primary McCain sitting next to his aging mother while she goes on a bigoted tirade against Mormons and McCain says he didn’t know she would say this (LIE) Why hasn’t the media disclosed the many earmarks that Senator McCain has put in legislation when he says in his “straigtht talk” he is against earmarks?
McCain flips and flops on his vote against Bush tax cuts, immigration for political expediency but silence from the biased media.
Huckabee doesn’t fool anyone. His purpose is to stop a Mormon from becoming President. Huckabee is the Huey Long in the campaign. Wants to build a great big road just like Huey Long. Why hasn’t the media covered the Huckabee corruption who believes it is better to receive than to give (notorious request as he left the Arkansas governor you can give me this gift for my mansion) From the first primary in Iowa the media says it is over for Romney when he came in second yet for Mike Huckabee who consistently comes in third and fourth place nothing is said by the media. Huckabee’s purpose is to stop the Mormon and get delegates for McCain that McCain can not get in exchange for the vice-presidency.

Comment by Ryan Garrett

McCain talks about all of the endorsements he is getting from people in Washington. Well, of course!! He IS Washington. He plays these backscratching games with all of his Washington buddies who have systematically been ruining our country. We need to get away from the establishment games and elect someone who actually has the ability to make a difference. McCain looked terrible tonight, like a grumpy old man. He won’t answer any question with detail, just starts rambling about prison camps. Thankful for his service, but that doesn’t qualify him to be President–obviously. GO ROMNEY!!!

Comment by CONSERVATIVE 08'

I don’t know how Republicans have let John McCain come this far. There should have only been two candidates in the debate last night, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. Now lets take McCain’s horrible performance last night and use it as a wake up call. Republicans can’t afford a candidate like John McCain life is too short to waste 4-8 years, and the thought of having two democrats to choose from in the General Election scares me to death.

-VOTE CONSERVATIVE 08′

Magic Underpants, Getting your own planet when you die, Answering to the founder of the Mormon faith at the judgement (not God), claiming the African Americans are black because they are cursed by God, secret rituals, claiming that Jesus had three wives, claiming there are many thousands of gods….and by the way you can become one…if you just work hard enough…

Mitt couldn’t be less Christian.

A president has a profound influence on the spirituality of the American people. If what Mormons truly believe is the direction you want the souls of American pointed to…than vote for Mitt. This idea that Christians should just turn the other way and vote for him is shameful.

Scott,
I wouldn’t necessarily put it the way you did, but you’re right!
Faith matters!
And, yes, it matters where, better still, in Whom, you put your faith.
A person may sincerely believe that a secret handshake learned in a temple ritual may get them into heaven but, no matter how sincere and tenacious one may believe such a thing, it doesn’t make it true.

Scott,

This is McCain-esque. The last two slurs against Mormons have less basis in fact than the barbs McCain has been throwing at Romney regarding policy.

Once again Governor Mike Huckabee is ignored! CNN declares him the winner and you don’t even mention him in the article about the debate. So sad!! A vote for Mike Huckabee is not a wasted vote and you will see that on Super Tuesday!!

Comment by A true AZ conservative

Mike Huckabee is a nice guy, but he would get slaughtered by the liberal machine in November (he can’t even stand up to Chuck Norris, who is on his side).

McCain is not a nice guy and, despite the polls, would also get slaughtered by anyone from the Democratic party. They want to run against him. Can you imagine McCain in a debate against Hillary or Obama? His list of supporters answer to the tough questions just won’t cut it. He struggles to throw together complete sentences!

I am sick at the thought of John McCain representing the Republican party. We have failed!

Those of you who are for Huckabee should go to abc.com and complete the questionaire at the bottom right of the screen…you can see for yourselves who you match up with on the issues. (Based on records, not on double, oh, I mean straight (?) talk.)

Isn’t it ironic that McCain is given a pass on his flip/flops which happen to be much more current than Romney’s and on much more hot-button issues:

flip/flop on tax cuts,
Flip/flop on anmesty (did he ever answer the question last night?) These are within the last six to twelve months!

Comment by BK

I bet McCain was CRUSHED when Kennedy endorsed Obama instead of him- Perhaps he and Hillary should consider a Clinton/McCain ticket since they’re such tight buds, share so many views, and both got dissed by the Kennedys.

I cannot imagine that arrogant geezer talking with world leaders. Will he laugh at them, gloat, roll his eyes, and make faces while speaking with them? He is in NO WAY qualified to lead this or any country, although Mexico may benefit from his leadership. His manner of delivering a speech is sing song, condenscending, and insincere.
I’m tired of him saying the American people want the border secured- Doesn’t HE want the border secured??? I don’t trust him on the illegal alein issues or any others.

Comment by Anne

John McCain made an absolute fool of himself during the debate. He was rude, pretentious, and could not respond in an intelligent way to Mitt Romney’s remarks. The Viet Nam War was fought in the sixties. Many good men died for their country. It was a very unpopular war and John McCain still tries to further his own interests by referring to his status as a prisoner of war. He has been in Washington for many years now. What has he done for Vietman Veterans? VERY LITTLE. Mitt Romney is the only Republican left to serve our party well. He has a fine family, good morals and the abilty to speak without smirking. GO MITT!

Comment by popt

Huckabee is only in the race to slow down Romney so he and his lover mCliar and beat romney. huckabee do us all a favor and step down and do whats right for the party! You actually think you will win the southern states. The evangelical vote has been spilt into three. In Michigan Romney beat huck in evangel votes, in flordia mccain beat both romney and huck in evangel votes(romney and huck tied). Does everone see the pattern? Look what happened in south carolina, you were so nice to mcCain (the whole GOP race) people could not see the difference between you two, so they went for mcCliar, your polls numbers took a nose dive. The same will happen is the southern states in super tuesday. Watch the polls little by little Mcliar will eat into your poll numbers. Either join the fight against mcCliar or step down. But do not stop Romeys progress. Romney has won more delegates than huck (+19) He is ahead of (huck) of you in national polls, and has won three times as many states as you. Facts do like lie!

Anne- I agree- Between a formally drug addicted wife and close ties with Donald Segretti (of Watergate fame, and co-chair of McCain’s 2000 campaign), McCain has a lot of baggage the Dems can pick away at and that threatens his viability against them. Just how does being a POW prepare one to lead a country, anyway??
Heck, it sounds like even Republicans don’t like him- He’d better keep his fingers crossed that he’ll split the illegal alien vote w/ Obama or Hillary from massive voter fraud. God knows he’s pandered to them enough,
I don’t get all the endorsements- If he’s our candidate, I will write someone else in.

I find it interesting that whever Mitt Romney tries to point out McCain’s non-conservatism, he is criticized for negative campaigning. Yet, when McCain is obviously snippy & snide - nothing is said. It seems like the press gives McCain a pass. I like certain things about both candidates (as people) - - but the bottom line is - - - MITT ROMNEY is a better man for the job. He does not play into the hand of the liberals and is not a Washington Robot. He is a brilliant man, who will not only protect our borders - he’ll straighten out this economy. He has an awesome family, unwavering morals & values and handles himself with dignity and grace when under attack.

I will say, however, that I strongly disagree with some previous posters indicating that they will vote for Hillary or Obama if McCain gets the nod. That is INSANE. I disagree with many of McCain’s views, and question his conservatism, but NO WAY would I EVER vote for Obama or Hillary. McCain may tend to lean left - but, Hillary & Obama have been sucked so far left there’s no hope. I really hope Republicans will stick together no matter WHO the candidate is.

Unfortunately, for me - I’m in a state that doesn’t have our primary until May (INSANE). So, I’m counting on all of you SUPER TUESDAY voters to give Romney the boost he needs and deserves! I am in great hopes to see a ROMNEY/THOMPSON ticket for 08! They are the only two true conservatives.

(footnote: Fred Thompson was always my first choice based on his record, values and beliefs. I think he perhaps got in too late and took a bit too long to get his train running. I still think he is a terrific man and a TRUE BLUE Conservative. I think he would be a great VP choice for Romney)

TO THE MEDIA….

I’m writing to Anderson Cooper and the rest of the media.

I am absolutely appalled at the handling of questions at our Presidential campaigns. I want to hear from everyone at that panel. It’s not about the persons presenting the questions nor is it about CNN or whomever is sponsoring the debate. Do not think it’s your right to weed out my candidates for me. I was so angry that I could not hear the facts and opinions from Huckabee or Paul. They showed more composer and patience than anyone at that fiasco last night. And, neither of them are my first choice for a vote. In fact they’re far from it. However, that’s my vote to use and my choice to use and I need to make it based on debates, voting records, background and even commentary style of the candidates. Anderson and the hosts were the ones who looked absolutely ignorant. Do not ever think what you all did last night was good for America. It only proved that those with power, money or something to gain feel their importance and opinion out way the people.
Now I have to research Paul and Huckabee even more to see what you and the panel is trying to hide about the other candidates. Maybe they’re better!

Regards,

An absolutely disgusted viewer & voter!

Please consider giving your vote to the true candidate you saw on the stage last night, Governor Huckabee. He has the Reagan spirit in his sails and is our party’s Great Communicator. He is intelligent, grounded, and in touch with the average American and their concerns and needs.
What an eloquent speaker and orator! He’s an experienced executive who has governed and bettered lives and the economy of his state.

Of those debating tonight, Governor Huckabee simply shined as the steadfast stalwart of his beliefs and vision to better our great country. The new surge of interest and support is now moving in his direction, because he has the integrity, character, and executive leadership to move America in the right direction.

McCain has many old republican establishment politician endorsements -

These people obviously wouldn’t want a Washington outsider who doesn’t owe them any favors to stir things up in Washington. They want someone who will do more of the same and try to make them all happy.

Every time McCain starts naming off his Washington friends who are voting for him, I feel more inclined to vote for someone who is not intertwined in all these politicians.

Let’s show Washington that we want someone in office who will work for “we the people” and not for them “the politicians”! Mitt ‘08

The debate just showed how the media and pundits really are clueless about grassroots movements. This was exemplified by the fact that most of the time was dedicated to McCain and Romney, playing to the thought that this is now a 2 man race, this contention is laughable given the fact that the difference between 1st(McCain) and 3rd(Huckabee) is 7% on the National RCP average. This very fact flies in the face of the false advertisement of a 2 man race promoted by the news makers(not news reporters) on FNC, CNN, MSNBC, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingrahm, Ann Coulter, Bill Kristol, and many more useless members of the media.
I found it Laughable that McCain, Romney and Paul made fools of themselves thinking that Reagan would somehow endose them thinking that they were the next Reagan. Huckabee was the only who gave an answer based on the humility a president needs.
I doubt anyone at Fox News will have the brains and guts to actually respond to me, because the seem to have gotten very prideful and unwilling to take correction, which is too bad because I actually enjoyed watching them at one time.

To all you Romney voters who think Huckabee is stealing your votes … get a brain. Huckabee has spent probably 5% of the money McCain and Romney have spent on ads and pure political force, and yet Huckebee is still in the mix. It’s Romney who should back down and realize that his Mormonism is holding him back, and he should endorse Huckabee. And to say that Huckabee is playing for McCain is flat out ridiculous.

All one needs to do is evaluate the answers of each candidate as they responded to the Reagan endorsement question … the egos and arrogrance came from all of the candidates except for Huckabee, who responded in humility and respect for Reagan.

The media (including Hannity and Limbaugh) are playing all of us for fools, creating divisiveness and more confusion as who to vote for. My family and I stopped listening to Hannity and Limbaugh, and we are encouraging all of our republican friends to boycott those pandering and biased idiots, and vote based on true conservatism … HUCKABEE is the only man up there who can unite all republicans and bring Reagan’s values and standards back to the forefront.

I think both McCain and Romney have an arrogance to them that will not resonate with General Election Voters as Florida Voter above comments listen to there response to the Reagan question at theend of last nights debate it was clear who hold Reagan in the highest regard.

Limbaugh and Hannity need to get off their high horse and listen to what Huckabee says. I think a boycott of them is in order well said Florida

John McCain showed that he can’t be trusted in the debate. He had nowhere to go when cornered with his lie about Romeny wanting to pull the trops out. The only thing he could do was to begin sputtering about how he was proud of his record. He may be proud of it but it doesn’t follow that we should unless it meassures up and it doesn’t. Romney won the debate easily against McCain. It’s great that McCain is a war hero but being a war hero doesn’t automatically qualify you to be president. Wake up America! Romney has the experience and the vision to lead. He also has a much better chance of McCain than lasting for two terms.

All you Huckabee supporters-

Can you please explain to me how you think that Huckabee is a conservative?

Clearly he gets high marks as a social conservative for his strong stance against abortion and same-sex marriage. But his support for scholarships for children of illegals isn’t really a conservative position. Nor is his ducking of the question in the debate last night about children of illegals being citizens. Yes, the Supreme Court has ruled on that, but guess what, they also ruled on Roe vs. Wade and that hasn’t stopped him. Poor excuse. And frankly, his comments on religion

He gets very low marks as a fiscal conservative. He raised taxes- a lot. His plan to stimulate the economy? Build roads??? That sounds way too much like FDR and the New Deal. Doesn’t he realize that the private sector is far better at creating jobs than the government? His constant animosity towards Romney because of his wealth shows he clearly does not understand how a free market economy works and the conservative ideal of work hard and get paid for it.

It is hard to judge how Huckabee rates as a security conservative. His original plan for illegals was not conservative. He has the right idea on Iraq- but because he is tied so closely to McCain he doesn’t get the same attacks on lack of military and foreign affairs experience as Romney. It is easy to say “I’ll meet you at the gates of hell”, it is something else to know how to deal with foreign leaders.

So, in terms of the three legs of Reagan conservatism, Huckabee gets at best a 1.75. He is a great debater, but so was Bill Clinton. The ability to speak well does not translate to having good, consistent policies.

McCain is a buffoon!! He needs to stop referring to his military record in an effort to avoid answering questions Never did I hear him last night give a clear answer when asked about immigration. No wonder the media is pushing him so hard, he is a “Kennedy” Democrat in sheep’s clothing!

It seems that all the support on all of these blogs is going to Romney…then WHY IS MCCAIN WINNING?????

Comment by sherri

OOPS, I wasn’t done…I listen to talk radio and all I have heard is the support for Romney and lack of support for McCain. If this is true where are the votes going? And does anyone know who has come out and endorsed Romney? I know that National Review has, but that is all I have heard. Why do they not come out and throw their support to him? And Huckabee should get out…unless there is already a deal with McCain for a VP or another job!! I am feeling very defeated at this point. I hope that Super Tuesday is better than Super for Mitt!!

GO MITT!!!

Why don’t you keep it to politics. It’s clear that you’ve been spending a little too much time on anti-mormon websites so why don’t you share your bigoted statements there.

Comment by Dean

Sherri,

Why is McCain winning?

Because too many Republicans and Independents are willing to give up their principles and vote for someone they think is electable. The problem is, he isn’t electable if the base is turned off and does not come out and vote.

Has anyone noticed the huge numbers of Democrats showing up in the primaries? No Republican stands a chance unless the party is united. While McCain likes to tout his 80+% conservative rating, it is important to note that as time has gone by, he gets more liberal (Aaahnuld backing him just shows that). Everyone knows about his bills that have been touted non-stop by Hannity and others as being against conservative priciples and most if not all of those came in the last 10 years and after he considered being VP for Kerry! For me, it is his LACK of character (post-Vietnam with his first wife, his treatment of conservative Republicans) and obvious lack of belief in the free market (why else do he and Huckabee jab Romney on his wealth- and last time I checked, McCain married into big money) that disqualifies him as someone I could support.

While Hillary or Obama would be a disaster for the country, so would liberal leaning McCain. The big difference is that at least under Hillary or Obama, the party would unite against them and have another Republican Revolution. Under McCain, the Dems would get even more control of Congress and there goes his effort to keep the war in Iraq going.

So, using classic game theory- I am more inclined to vote for the Democrat than McCain to save not the Republican Party, but conservative ideals.

Up until the debate last night, my husband and I were McCain supporters. We couldn’t believe how aggressively rude he was. His insistance on sticking with the Romney “timetable” thing was embarrassing! Every credible news source has said that was untrue. And his shark-like smirk was down right creepy! I though he was going to bite Gov. Romney. I have never been a Romney supporter, but last night has certainly caused me to take a second and third look at him. Mitt came off as much more presidential.

Comment by G.R.

McCain isn’t electable against Hillary or Barack. Huckabee is the most viable Republican candidate land can certainly come across as likeable as Barack. Let’s face it…likeability goes a long way in these races. Regardless of how much experience (McCain) or money (Romney) you have, if the folks don’t like you, they are going to vote for someone they do. Huckabee has it all — experience and likeability.
GO HUCK!!!!

Comment by Dean

G.R.

See my previous posts. Bill Clinton was likeable and could speak well- had experience and likeability. Huckabee is not doing well because he represents only one part of the party.

Maybe if his followers and believers opened up their pocketbooks (other than just when he raises taxes or rejects the tax rebate stimulus), we wouldn’t have to hear folks like you whine about money. Remember that thou shalt not covet thing…….

Hucakabee’s comments on religion scare way too many people for him to be electable. Today he bashes Mormons, tomorrow it will be Catholics, then Jews, and then anybody but Southern Baptists. That isn’t very likeable.
