Obama Campaigns in Red-State Kansas

When Obama took the stage at a rally in El Dorado, Kansas, today, he told the cheering crowd to take a seat. “We’re among friends here. We’re family,” he said. Although Obama never lived there, his maternal grandparents did. Stanley and Madelyn Dunham were Kansas natives and his mother was born on a military base in the state - and he did mention that in his speech.

But it was still a surprise when Obama pointed out a 72-year-old woman in the crowd and introduced her (incorrectly) as his grandfather’s aunt. Actually, Margaret Wolf is Obama’s grandmother’s cousin and has now met Obama three times. Wolf didn’t tell the campaign that she was going make the hour and a half drive to hear her cousin, Barack Obama, but the senator spotted her and gave her a kiss on the cheek on his way to the podium.

The African American who was born in Hawaii, raised as a child in Indonesia, and schooled on the East Coast, was sure to include his heartland background to the 2,000 Kansans gathered - he, after all, is the candidate who says he can bridge divides. “Our family’s story is one that spans miles and generations; races and realities. It’s the story of farmers and soldiers; city workers and single moms. It takes place in small towns and good schools; in Kansas and Kenya; on the shores of Hawaii and the streets of Chicago. It’s a varied and unlikely journey, but one that’s held together by the same simple dream. And that is why it’s American,” he said to applause.

Obama also received the endorsment of Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, who touted Obama’s Midwestern values as a reason for her choice. “Barack Obama has Midwestern values, values that we know about, and he got them from his grandparents and his mom. He understands how to bring people together across party lines. He understands how to give people hope for the future. He understands the value of education, transformational value of education. He doesn’t just talk about it, he lives it, he thinks it, he breaths it. He will lead with those values,” she told the room.

Following the event a handful of reporters sought out Ms. Wolf in the crowd to ask her about her family - take a look at Obama recognizing her at the start of his Kansas event and her comments to reporters here:

The Kansas caucus is on February 5th.

I wonder if he thinks Kansan votes are hollow like those in Florida. Then again, they have delegates that he can win. He loves and cares about them as long as they have delegates.

I think what barack did by reconizing a family memeber was truly wonderful, for not forgetting where he came from, that show me that he has Integrity and Love for his fellow man, that is a sign of a true believer in Jesus Christ, and ours New President Of these United States Of America.

” God bless Barack Obama”

Comment by Jack

Robert, does Jesus believe in ignoring non-Christians because he can’t get paid for noticing them? If he’s such a believer, maybe he should care about all people — not just those who can get him delegates.

Which God/god should bless Obama? Didn’t he swear in using the Koran? Who is Obama’s God/god?

The last emperor of a falling dynasty. Ted is not willing to face the reality that the name of Kennedy is becoming insignificant. The Kennedys are feeling threaten by a woman candidate, because the only role a woman can play and the Kenneydy accept is Merilyn Monro. Don’t we forget about all the sex and drug scandals involving so many members of the Kennedy, one after another.

Comment by John Q. Public

Wow, it is truly amazing how many people jump on these comment boards to broadcast their ignorance. Obama didn’t campaign in Florida because of a three-way agreement between the Democratic candidates not to do so. Why? Because the Florida primary was moved forward in a calculated bid by the Republican party to basically disenfranchise the Democratic vote; much like it has in recent elections. Yes, the delegate count is important, get over it.

Obama ‘08!!!

Check out the facts ———————–
Obama has been a member of Trinity Church for nearly 20 years, but he nonetheless has been forced to defend his religion as an e-mail campaign continues to claim he took the oath of office on the Koran, refuses to say the Pledge of Allegiance and attended a madrassa as a youth while living in Indonesia.

The candidate insists that all of those allegations are false.

Speaking to the audience at the Sumter, S.C., rally, Obama said he is tired of his opponents trying to sow the seeds of distrust and “hoodwink” people into believing the worst.

“They’re trying to bamboozle you. It’s the same old okey doke. You all know about, okey doke, right? It’s the same old stuff. Just like if anybody starts getting one of these e-mails saying ‘Obama is a Muslim.’ I’ve been a member of the same church for almost 20 years, praying to Jesus with my bible. Don’t let people turn you around because they’re just making stuff up! That’s what they do. They try to bamboozle you, hoodwink you,” he said.
—————————-Who did ?
Keith Ellison was the only one who took oath on a Kuran. The rumors of Obama having done that are nothing but vicious and ignorant slander.

I feel change in the air.Obama for America!
Out with the old divisive politics embraced by the Clintons which results in gridlock in congress. In with Obama and the new politics of building bipartisan coalitions to get things done for the American people.Mrs Clinton touts 35 questionable years of experience including her 16 years as Arkansas first lady and First lady of the Clinton era. What is ‘experience’if you cannot get things done due to deep divisions which she fosters. She is not electable in November as up to 47% of the country hate her.Her recent gutter politics on Obama will add to that percentage.

I hope more and more people see the light of day
Hillary’s claim to “35 years of experience.” Subtract her years spent as first lady of Arkansas and in the White House, and her time working as a lawyer in the Rose Law Firm and in other jobs. As Reason Magazine’s Steve Chapman reported in November, Hillary Clinton has “just under eight years of experience in elective office — one more than John Edwards and four fewer than Obama.” And, to boot, Hillary the Feminist has her man to fight her battles.

Comment by mmh

James/james: Obama did not swear in using the Quran; he is Christian. As a side note, all Abrahamic religions believe in the same God.

I like how you spread false rumors to attack someone; this is exactly the kind of garbage we need to clean out of Washington.

Comment by Obama Jr.

So your thesis is Obama is not christian and the prof is he said aunt instead of cousin. This sounds like the pointless dribble on talk radio. Obama care more about the United States than Rush Limbaugh Sean Hanity and whoever brings up the rear in the ratings. These heros of the “conservitive” movement are only using and abusing America for there personal ends. That is what you folks need to wake up to.

Obama is the beneficiary of racesim. He has majority of black votes in IL to begin with, to have HISTORICAL black turn out in S.C. to get a shot in the arm.

Notice that my comment(s) were questions - yes somewhat leading, but nevertheless question. Furthermore I believe that AFA and other entities have conducted background check on Mr. Obama which was much more in depth than probably most of those making comments herein know. Everyone should continue to search. Regardless of the man’s religion(what ever he may be), his stance on issues is far from what I believe however as most elections, money, the press, and more money will put someone in the office not the truth. Thank you both for commenting. As far as me being on the attack, hater or a racist - you both couldn’t be further from the truth. You want to keep the garage out of Washington - make elections fair for all.

Buy the way…. almost forgot. No the Abrahamic’s (referring to Muslims) do not have the same God as Christians. Research history, do the study and you’ll find the truth in that. (The moon rock is a hint)

I give two big thumbs up to Obama for coming to Kansas. This is as Red of a state you will find. He actually has a legit shot of getting a lot of votes or even winning Kansas with his Kansas family background, his hope for a better future (people in Kansas need it), and most importantly the backing of Kathleen Sebelius.

He is huge in Lawrence, Kansas City (KS), and Wichita. Hillary doesn’t stand a chance in Kansas regardless. Obama actually stands a chance against the Republicans and that is mind boggling.

Comment by What-Who?

Watch out Kansas….you have a muslim headed your way……..DUCK!!

Comment by What-Who?

ALVIN…You should stop spending so much time on the computor trashing people and sign up for grammer and spelling classes. Seriously, your time will be better spent. Oh, and take a course in politics while your there!!

Comment by Lilly

Chris, grow up, move beyound this race card. Not everyone will agree to Obama’s hype and airy speeches. If you don’t that does not make you racist. We want beef where is the beef? I’m able to inspire myself, I work hard my life could be much better but I can dig in there and will do not thin I can pull change from the air. Besides, I go to a church where the pastor can give me all of the inspiration, I need a President who can fix the mess we’re in.

And as for HUMA hillarys top aide “pie” , don’t put superstitions into this because, was it not your candidate who went to Africa? Have you wondered why someone who had not visited his people for years would go at this time? I suggest you begin your investigations there not at Senator Clinton.

Yes, I am black, thank you very much. This presidency is not owed to anyone, they will all have to work for it regardless of race, gender or color. No one gets it because it is their time. Feb 5th will tell

Comment by James Weathers

When will Mr. Obama tell the truth that he want to take this county into Socialism.

Comment by Sister Yeye Akilimali Funua Olade

Sister Lilly,We are glad Obama went to his relatives in Africa. Now he has gone to his relatives in Kansas. That is fair enough. As a Sister raised in Lawrence,Kansas, who now is back to AFRICA(Nigeria),we are praying for Obama to win cause America needs him to save the bloody, muddy, spent image America has now worldwide. And we in AFRICA ofcourse love him because he is part of us too! Like that Auntie in Kansas loves him.

Comment by Sister Yeye Akilimali Funua Olade

James Weathers, don’t be afraid! Obama is far from being a socialist. If you study his plans he is being very conservative,so he can’t possibly be a socialist. But we love him all the same because he can bring Americans together to get it together before it’s too late.

Comment by Crystal

Ms. Wolf is very, very moving! Seems honest and refreshing, just like Obama. Oh… Obama can get the republicans to change their party affiliation to democrat! Awesome!!!

Comment by Jack

So in this one board I was called a Clinton employee, a racist, and other names! What’s wrong, harpies, can’t actually win through “hope”? Of course you can’t, so like Obama, you pander to the same politics as every day. You’re worse than Ted Kennedy!

Obama’s harpies can’t live with the fact that Obama ignored Florida, lost by massive margins, and then insulted them. They have to spin it, but the reality is that Florida chose Hillary Clinton with the same coverage as many other states will receive by the delegate-minded politician that pretends he wants to notice every vote.

Screech on about how you’re inspired, feel warm and fuzzy inside. This campaign is Clinton’s. She is the candidate of real change, and she proved that in Florida when she recognized their campaign despite the DNC’s unamerican, snotty decision.

Obama just went right along with the institution, who cares about the people, right? That’s the Obama way. Votes don’t matter, only delegates do. Candidate for change? More like Candidate for disenfranchisement. That’s the truth and nothing but.

Oh, and I’m not on Clinton’s payroll. I’m also certainly not a racist. The last thing on my mind is the skin color of either contestant — unlike voters in South Carolina.

Comment by anghiari

Loved seeing Senator Obama’s cousin, Margaret Wolf…I loved how honest and feisty she is. She said she is thrilled about the Senator’s run for the presidency. The Senator has a complex and very American story and its great to see all of his relatives because it tells us so much about the man. I was born in Kansas and find the people to be down to earth and honest…and they love their Governor…who has also endorsed Senator Obama…too many posters on here have a self-hate problem…people who only spew such mean invectives…they must be deeply unhappy with themselves. They don’t even know the Senator, so it can’t really be about him… and then there are Hillary’s hit squad who will say and do anything online to try and discredit Senator Obama. Yeah Obama and Yeah Kansas!

It’s a sad day for America when people can support Obama, who is clearly a Muslim. It does not matter which way you spin it Barack “Hussein” Obama is a Muslim! In case you have not noticed folks this is America! I would sleep better at night with an American in the white house rather than someone who is not only muslim but also deceptive. And, he is pulling you all into his web, just goes to show ya how gullible people can be! Scary…..

Comment by Florida gal

Obama flipped all his voters in Florida the middle finger! Then he snubs Hillary at the State of the Union conference. What a child..I think I seen him pull out a crayon to get Bush’s autograph. This guy is way to imature to run for any office… This combined with ALL the scandal on Obama the past week should tell even the confused voters that Obama is no leader, unless your a duck!

Comment by Voted for Hillary in Florida

I voted for Senator Hillary Clinton in the Florida primary. I was also at her victory celebration in Davie, Florida. She is more than qualified to be president.

Senator Clinton is strong and will be able to stand up to the mud thrown at her by her opponents. As a Florida voter, I want my vote to count now and in November. DNC are you listening? Florida is too important a state to ignore and penalize.

I am a 50 year old female….don’t know when again we’ll have another viable female presidential candidate. A female President will be CHANGE.

Go Hillary !! You have my support all the way to the White House.

James: U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota was sworn in using a Koran. not Obama. There is a good reason why Ellison used a Koran: he is a Muslim. It would have been stupid to swear him in on a book he did not believe in. Obama is a Christian, unlike the liars who keep insisting he’s a Muslim. Their ignorance is an embarassment to the Christianity they usually simultaneously espouse. Real Christianity is about truth, but their version of it seems to require perpetuating falsehoods. Jack

Comment by Karena

Okay, people… Obama is not Muslim. While his church is predominently African American… so what? I guess that makes all white churches, or Korean churches racist too? Only white people who feel threatened by minorities would repeat such a falsehood… hardly a christian sentiment. And, all the democratic candidates agreed to forego Florida… do you honestly think Hillary would show there if she were gliding to an easy nomination? Do you think the repubs would spend any time there if it wasn’t for delegates (besides Rudy, of course… what is up with that strategy?)

I am a midwestern moderate who feel in love with politics in high school, but I have never had a candidate inspire me as Barack Obama does. (Maybe Reagan… wish I was around to hear JFK/RFK in person…) I do not agree with Obama on everything, but after reading his books and listening to him speak, I am a convert.

This land needs healing, after 8 years of a horrendous presidency and an ill begotten war. The repubs have had 8 years to fix things… The Clintons are a train wreck…

Obama has that message — united we stand, divided we fall. Some of you with your petty bickering, name calling only reinforce that, all the while hiding here in anonymity.

Comment by Davd

Wow, how enlightening to learn from Kansans that Obama is a Muslim! And here I was uncomfortable with him because he was wearing his Christianity on his sleeve and pandering to the black Christians too much and just not saying enough progressive things in generl, other than to remind us that he was smart enough to vote against causing a disaster in Iraq. How foolish of me!

The only good organized religion is a discredited organized religion. Give me spiritual freedom and a government guided by reason.

Comment by Cherry Watts

After reading your column, I am confused. Obama’s father is African, his mother is white from Kansas so why is he called African American? Where does his mother fit into the equation? Only Americans call each other these silly names, Italian American, Irish American, Jewish American etc. Since they were all born here, shouldn’t they be Americans? Most of my family lives in England, and no one calls them African English. My children’s father is Irish and he is very insulted whenever anyone calls his children African American. They are Americans of Irish and Black descent and we let them know it so that they can be proud of both sides. My children reside in Ireland with there grandparents so that they can attend university and the Irish refer to them as Americans. Only Americans like to label each other.

Comment by jay00789

umm Cherry really? He’s proud of his African American heritage. He’s proud of his American heritage. That’s why he is labled as an African and American. It can only be portrayed as a negative name if that’s how you view it.

Comment by Tom J

I see James is still trolling any thread about Obama, just so he can ask his ‘questions’ about muslim/koran/whatever.

If people point out the facts, he claims ignorance/curiosity/whatever - what does he care? He’s managed to waste some supporters’ time and energy.
If people don’t, he’s managed to continue the whisper campaign.
What a waste of bandwidth.

Isn’t junk like that exactly what we want to see changed in politics?

Comment by Mr. Better than You

“ALVIN…You should stop spending so much time on the computor trashing people and sign up for grammer and spelling classes. Seriously, your time will be better spent. Oh, and take a course in politics while your there!!”

Congratulations What-Who, you’re as ignorant as you are stupid. Don’t preach to people about needing grammar and spelling classes when you misspell computer (computor), grammar (grammer), and you’re (you meant to use it as a contraction, as in “while you are there”) all within three sentences. Your grammar is only slightly better, but I think I’ve already made my point.

About this politics course you speak of… Where did you get your education? If I were a betting man I’d guess you made it all the way through your senior year of a No Child Left Behind era high school.

I find it very disturbing to hear people say that they would vote for Obama JUST because he’s black. Funny,,,, he’s BIRACIAL!
After the Pastor Wright stuff hit the media fan, those same people were clearly divided into two camps;

the ones who will not be voting for Obama, because he’s not bright enough to realize that associations and appearances DO matter

the ones who will vote for him, no matter what he does or says, just because he’s black.
(Yes, that’s what they said!)

The only thing that disturbs me more is the fact that three illegal aliens are registered to vote from my residence,,where they have never lived.
When I presented this disturbing fact to Voter Registration and my polling place, I was told that
they didn’t require proof of where these illegal aliens lived, or proof that they are citizens, in order to vote.

How lovely.
