Romney Slams McCain on Climate Bill

West Palm Beach, FL—

Governor Romney went after his rival, Senator John McCain at an early morning press conference outside of a Texaco gas station, purposefully located to go after the McCain-Lieberman climate bill and his sponsor. Romney said the global warming legislation would add an extra 1,000 dollars to the average Florida homeowner’s energy bill without putting restrictions on other countries sending companies and jobs overseas:

“The burden on the Florida homeowner would obviously be excessive and what is particularly troubling about the bill is that the affect on the global environment would be negligible and that’s because the bill does not require other nations to participate in order for the regulation to be promulgated,” Romney said.

He continued his attacks mentioning two more pieces of legislation McCain sponsored and pointed out what he believes is a lack of understanding of economic policy on McCain’s part:

“McCain-Feingold has not reduced the impact of money in politics, it has made it worse. McCain- Kennedy is viewed by virtually all as an amnesty bill and McCain-Lieberman would cost the families of America as much as 1,000 dollars a piece. All 3 are bills, which evidence a lack of understanding of our economy. The very lack of understanding which Senator McCain has admitted on numerous occasions. “

The former Massachusetts governor was asked what he would do to reduce global warming if he so fiercely opposes McCain-Lieberman:

“With regards to global warming, certainly we want to work with other nations of the world to create a global solution which involves the largest green house gas emitter in the world – China. The idea of America saying we are going to unilaterally but a huge burden on ourselves and hope China follows, is simply out of touch with how the world works. “

The McCain campaign was quick to issue a response:

“Mitt Romney has proven in this campaign that he will say anything to anyone at any time if he thinks it will help him politically. His stunning capacity to reverse his position on virtually every issue casts serious doubt on his ability to lead. Floridians need to ask themselves: If he changes his position today, what prevents him from reversing himself again tomorrow?”

“Just two years ago, Mitt Romney fully supported a ‘cap and trade’ system to deal with global climate change, saying, ‘I’m convinced it is good business,’ and citing its positive effect on development of technologies and economic growth. Today, desperate to attack John McCain in the heat of a political campaign, Mitt Romney has changed his position once again.”

**UPDATE**

From Romney press secretary, Eric Fehrnstrom:

“As governor, Mitt Romney refused to sign a multi-state greenhouse gas initiative because it did not contain limits on price increases. A national cap and trade policy only makes sense if it involves other energy-consuming nations and contains safety valves to protect against sharp price increases.”

Rush Limbaugh just came out and said that he and many others agree that McCain was dishonest about his comment on Romney’s ‘timetables’…. Pretty dirty. McCain shows his true character when pressured. Rush says McCain’s behavior was ‘contemptable’ and even though he claims to be an ‘honorable man’ there was no honor in this. Rush compared McCain’s behavior to Clinton tactics.

He should apologize to Romney and I hope McCain’s dishonesty does hurt his votes in Florida - I hope the people wake up we have too much at stake.

Vote for Romney ‘08 !!

Comment by Terri

Can you trust anything McCain says now?

Prove you are an honorable man McCain and apologize…

Comment by CC

I don’t know….and can’t trust McCain’s version of what someone else said….to know what Romney said 2 years ago. BUT, I think it’s entirely REASONABLE to GROW your understanding of how to deal with the environment! Taking a GLOBAL position on problems and not just imposing restrictions, etc on the US businesses, has been something I have heard on the debates so I think McCain is twisting….again…..

Comment by JH

Hmmmm, Why haven’t we heard McCain talking about his “Energy Bill” at all?

He is trying to sneak it through, just like he tried to sneak through his AMNESTY BILL!

Someone who does their work behind closed doors like McCain, colaborating with liberals, is not a man who I would trust to be at the head of the Republican party!

McCain has proved just over the past week, how dishonest he is! He is a Washington politician through and through! And is playing Washington style dirty politics down in Florida!

What a disgrace!! He cannot compete with Mitt Romney when it comes to the economy so he throws out lies one after another to try and change the topic.

Florida, I hope you show McCain that this kind of dirty politics is NOT wanted in the Republican party, and maybe he SHOULD cross over to the other side of the aisle just like he considered doing in 2004 to run as John Kerry’s running mate! Despicable!!

MITT ROMNEY FOR PRESIDENT!!!

Did you guys know that Romney graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School and top-five percent from Harvard Business School? Romney is a brilliant guy!

What did John McCain do? Barely graduated Annapolis, near the bottom of his class in 1957.

Romney is a hands-down smartest man, proved himself in school, made himself a multi-millionaire in business, while John McCain was wasting air promoting Shamnesty, McCain-Feingold, and McCain-Lieberman global warming initiative.

Before his despicable and shameful attacks, only McCain knew he is is a closet liberal. Know everybody knows.

Comment by Andy

Why isn’t McCain proud of the legislation he’s sponsored? Why doesn’t he defend it instead of lashing back with the “flip-flopper” comment? My guess is that he doesn’t understand the implications of the bills himself, just as Romney suggests. I don’t think Romney is being hateful, I think he’s telling the truth! And McCain once again trys to change the subject… It’s because he sponsored the legislation to get his name on a famous bill, to get him in position to get elected… Not that he understands it. He only understands what his senate staff tells him about the economy. McCain will buy some beachfront property in Nevada if it’s sold to him in the right package…. Romney may have changed his position on abortion while he was governor several years ago, big deal, but he is clearly a heck of a lot smarter, and in my opinion more sincere, than John McCain.

McCain want to bomb Iran and stay in Iraq for 100 years. McCain want to get interest rate to zero and lead to our economic collaps. McCain want all the illeagal immigrants to stay in this country and leagal immigrants who can vote do not support it. How secure could our country be with him in power???

Comment by Dan

Let us count McCain’s conservative credentials:

-he wrote the bill granting amnesty to illegal immigrants (co-sponsored by Ted Kennedy)
-he voted to give your social security money to illegal immigrants
-he voted against the Bush tax cuts multiple times (he has since flip-flopped and has campaigned as a lifelong tax-cutter)
-he routinely engages in Democratic class warfare against big companies in America
-as recently as December 2007 he admitted “he does not know the economy very well” and needed to get better at it
-he wrote the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill that was declared to be an unconstitutional infringement of the 1st Amendment (co-sponsored by ultra-liberal Democrat Russ Feingold)
-he was called the “worst 2nd amendment candidate” by the president of the NRA
-wrote a bill (co-sponsored by his buddy Lieberman) imposing a massive tax on energy which, according to the Department of Energy, would drastically raise the price of gasoline and put 300,000 Americans out of work
-supports radical global warming legislation which involved him voting with every Democrat
-he joined forces with Democrats (Gang of 14) to block the Senate Republican’s attempt to confirm conservative, strict constructionist judges
-fought with Hillary Clinton to demand that terrorists be given a full American trial
-he joined liberals to fight against a federal marriage amendment supporting the institution of traditional marriage
-campaigning in 2000, he famously described Christian leaders as “agents of intolerance”
-he filed an amicus brief against pro-life advocates in Wisconsin
-he met with leading Democrats in 2004 to discuss the possibility of being John Kerry’s Vice-President
-ringleader of the infamous Keating 5 ethical scandal which cost US tax payers $160 billion (Google it)
-McCain cheated on his first wife after she had a severe accident. He then divorced her and married his multi-millionaire mistress, whose daddy bought McCain a spot in the Congress
-with most of these positions, unfortunately, McCain hasn’t flip-flopped and vows to fight for these liberal causes as president

http://www.cain2008.org - here is more evidence of his backdoor, behind the scenes, corrupt legislation while collaborating with the elites of the democrat party to make some money on the side.

Comment by Drew

I don’t understand why this is even a story. Mitt and McCain are both lying scumbags. They are lifelong politicians who are known for basing their stances on the polls and dirty, back door dealings. Both are Liberals and this country is being snowed by the proverbial wolves in sheep skin.

Ron Paul is the only TRUE conservative in this election. He is the only one who defends our Constitution, our Liberty and our Freedom. Ron Paul is the only candidate who actually understands monetary policy and has a real, working solution. Mitt has never been involved in federal economics and has zero experience when it comes to controlling currency and managing the economy at a federal level. Only Dr. Paul can claim this expertise.

Ron Paul for President in 2008 so that we don’t slide into depression!

Comment by Warren

Hey, John, start thinking for yourself and forget about what that fat windbag Rush says. At least McCain has served his country doing something other than making money and bragging about what a hot shot he is. Romney is an empty suit, used car salesman and most of the country wouldn’t put a mormon in the white house anyway.

Comment by Mrjimbo, TX

Warrren,
Do you just say that most of the country are religious bigots????? WOW….

Comment by Robert Hansen

Warren, what has being a Mormon got to do with it. Every Mormon I have ever known is honest, hardworking, very family oriented, and on average a cut above the average person.

If America won’t put a Mormon in the white house and would instead prefer a liar like McCain or Clinton then America is stupid and derserves exactly what it gets.

Drew, how can you call Romney a life long politician? What part of “25 years in the private sector” do you not understand?

Romney is the man for President

Go Mitt!

Comment by Bryce

It’s good to see the Romney campaign has its personnel combing the FOXNews site and spewing his dishonest campaign smears. So, while I rarely comment, someone has to bring a little honesty to this discussion.

First, it is absolutely TRUE that as Governor of Massachusetts, Romney adopted and the Democratic platform in most respects, including:

Support for government spending on “family planning,” aka pharmaceutical abortion - http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2005/10/15/romney_signs_bill_on_family_planning/

Raised government fees, aka taxes - http://www.factcheck.org/UploadedFiles/Romney2004BudgetFigures.pdf

Raised corporate taxes - http://www.factcheck.org/UploadedFiles/Romney2004BudgetFigures.pdf

Increased government spending over his term by over 7% (a 7% increase in the Federal budget would amount to another $186 billion…) - http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/one-two_punch_for_gop.html

Romney opposed the Bush tax cuts, and was complimented by the most liberal of Democrats for that, but was too cowardly to take a position - http://reasonbellpundit.blogspot.com/2008/01/romney-is-lying-again.html

He added Massachusetts to the list of states imposing higher vehicle fuel economy standards, a la California, imposing greater hurdles on DETROIT, WHERE HE NOW SAYS HE WILL HELP THE AUTO MAKERS - http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/01/15/romney_singing_new_tune_sweeter_to_detroits_ears/

…in short, Romney is exactly like Clinton - he will say anything to get elected. The problem is, you never know what he will do. He is not a conservative, he is a panderer. As governor, he took the Democratic line, now he speaks a conservative line, but one he has never followed. This guy is as slick as his hair and CANNOT BE TRUSTED.

McCain may have his faults, but he is by far the most honest candidate in this race. Follow the links and educate yourselves on the facts, folks. Then, vote for anyone but Romney.

Comment by David Caldwell

I wonder…. When McCain does not get the republican nomination, will he then accept a Vice President position in the Obama campaign? I think that if Hillary wins the democratic nomination, she will invite Obama to be her VP, but I doubt Obama would want a Clinton VP. I think he knows most of America does not want a third term for Bill. I could see Obama going for McCain, just like Kerry did in ‘04.

Comment by ArizonaConservative

Good one Drew!! Lifelong politicians? You need to learn before you speak. Romney has been in politics a relatively short amount of time compared to his rival McCain who is inundated into Washington poltics and all Her special interests.

Ron Paul is good, but is lacking leadership ability. Mitt is the only candidate that can lead. There is a difference between having good ideas and being a leader that can lead to these good ideas. Mitt all the way!! I predict that Romney wins the votes 40%, McCain 20%, Rudy 15%, etc.

Comment by badmoveMcCamnesty

John McCain is the perfect liberal! He attacks people for the exact things he has done and then tries to attack Romney strengths.

Sorry McCain, but I think you are done after this one.

Comment by Pixie

McCain, better known as Senator Amnesty, is about as trustworthy and honest as Ted Kennedy. In fact, I would trust Ted kennedy above John McCain. At least we know that Kennedy is a liberal. McCain just lies and tries to convince us he is a conservative. The recent New York Times endorsement of McCain should tell you everything you need to know about this moron. Wake up America. Senator Amnesty is way past his prime. Send him back home to Arizona so he can watch the illegals cut his grass. I support Mitt Romney.

Comment by Oho watching Republicans

Let’s contrast the Republicans….McCain vote for me because you are either militarily aggressive or fearful of the world…Huckabee vote for me cause I’m a good ol’ boy, and by the way as long as you think like me, an evangelical (not Methodist, not Catholic, not Lutheran ) you’ll be just fine…Romney vote for me and let’s role up our sleeves and work together to restore what America has lost…Paul vote for me and let’s radically change the way we have behaved since World War II…

I don’t like McCain…as an Air Force veteran…I don’t how he wraps himself in the flag and is a one issue candidate.

I don’t like Huckabee because he is too narrow and small minded…out of touch with the diversity that is America and overwhelmed by issues that are bigger than him

I like Romney because of his thoughtful expression as to why he has embraced the positions that he has..even if he has changed them…(and they have all changed them) … he is moderate…yet stands for something new

I like Paul…he says what he believes even though several things I disagree with him…but I think he would fail trying to change too much…and I’m not sure all correctly

Comment by Clarkca

McCain is just another Nixon

1) Neither had a real job, they were both lifelong politicians
2) Neither knew anything abot economics or business
3) Both had a hunger and thirst for personal Power
4) Both had problems with their temper and their judgements were colored by personal scores to be settled
5) Neither had respect for the constitution or personal property rights: Witness, McCain-Feingold’s assualt on the Freedom of Speech, Nixon’s Executive Privledge, the EPA, OSHA, and even the most Brezhnevian of all moves……PRICE CONTROLS.

Don’t elect professional politicians, ever.

Comment by TrueConservative

Warren mentions that John McCain served his country and certainly he did and is a Patriout for doing so.

However, just as you would never assume that a low-level manager has the ability to be the CEO of a large corporation, so can you assume that a mere squadron commander does not have the ability to be The Commander In Chief of the United States of America.

John’s position on Climate Change is just another example pointing towards his betrayal of Republicans and conservatives.

Comment by Doug

Just so you know Warren, you are a biggot, Why dont you say the same thing about Obama and throw the ‘N’ word in there while you are at it? If you think you can take a free shot at mormons by saying “this country shouldnt put a Mormon in the office” its only because you are an ignorant low life biggot! So get real, its possible that Rush actually sees McCain for what he is.

Comment by Dr. S. Beck

The people of the USA needs Mitt’s expertize in the White House as President. McCain maybe a hero, but politically speaking is too close to being like Clinton duo.

Comment by Andy R

God help us all if McCain wins Florida.

Romney is so clearly the better choice for president. McCain will open the borders, screw up our economy and allow China to drive us into a third world status.

As a republican i never thought i would say this, but I will vote for Hillary before I vote for McCain.

Romney 08!

Comment by Ken

so Mr. True Conservative, by your reasoning and I quote, “a mere squadron commander does not have the ability to be The Commander In Chief of the United States of America.” so where does that put ALL of the other candidates running? NONE of them have ever served in the military…

by your definition does that mean we can’t have a Commander-In-Chief if McCain isn’t elected? considering he is the only candidate to have served…

and by following your reasoning…when Mr. Romney was a CEO of a company he bought floundering companies then laid off the employees and sold those companies for a massive profit….I suppose by your reasoning we can assume that Romney will have ALL of us out of work if he is elected?…

if that method is how you and others that think like you choose a president….please do us all a favor and don’t vote…and if you do…please educate yourself on the facts before you make football team mentality decisions…

Comment by pbj

Has anyone noticed another twist of the truth by McCain here? Apparently his hearing doesn’t work so well. It’s one thing to unilaterally adopt climate change measures like McCain wants, at our sole expense, but it’s another to advocate that we should do something along with other countries, as Mitt favors. That’s a critical difference in plans, not a flip-flop, Mr. McCain. McCain’s up to the same tricks he tried to pull this weekend. When the outcome is in doubt, distort, distort, distort.

Comment by Lindsey Graham

Forget the economy, folks! McCain is winning the war for us in Iraq (not Bush, Petraeus or the troops) and we need McCain so we can start some more wars–like the war on global warming (McCain-Lieberman), the war on issue advocacy (McCain-Feingold), and the war against those who would close our borders (McCain-Kennedy).

Comment by Steve Z

Give me a break! Mitt Romney on Global warming! Ha,ha,ha….what a joke. Just a few weeks ago as he was desperately trying to win Michigan, he told the Autoworkers there that he’d lower fleet standards for fuel economy! Yeah Mitt! That’s gonna help! He is the worst Flip Flopper I’ve ever seen. Ask the people of Massachusettes what he did for them! This guy has lied and changed his stance on everything including abortion.
Who’s the moron who said Rush Limbaugh says anything that matters?…..Who cares what that Drug Addict says? He’s another lier who coined the phrase “Don’t do as I do, Do as I say”. What a joke.

Steve Z, I didn’t think liberals were allowed here. :)

You really don’t know your candidate when you say Mitt is a flip flopper. This phrase is old… every politician and person for that matter have at least changed positions or viewpoints on one or more issues. McCain is notorious for this.

Come to AZ and understand the problems we have because of people like McCamnesty. Just because McCain is good at dishing personal attacks doesn’t mean he hang with people like Romney who stick to the issues.

Mitt will win in Florida!

Comment by Pixie

That’s great news (Dan) about Romney opening up a big lead in most recent Florida poll. Floridians are seeing the real John McCain and know that even Hillary would be a better choice than him. I’m sure McCain will lose tomorrow but I hope he gets stomped just like Hillary did in South Carolina. Good riddance to him!

Comment by LB

Mitt Romney is the best GOP candidate. In addition to strong family values, Romney may be what this country needs to solve our national challenges and fix broken Washington. He can win the war against Islamic jihadists. He can secure our borders and deal with illegal aliens without stay-forever John McCain “Z Visas”; he will implement employer verification and penalties for noncompliance. His energy policy would include domestic drilling and conservation, with nuclear and renewable options.
Romney has warned about the impending Social Security and Medicare crises. He will cause a paradigm shift in medical care with portable health insurance. He wants to reduce taxes and eliminate taxation on capital gains and dividends.
He is the only Republican candidate who can usher in a new day in America, as President Reagan did in 1980.
Giuliani comes in a distant second and Sen. McCain is an honorable patriot who has been dead right about Iraq and dead wrong about core principles: freedom of speech (McCain/Feingold), rule of law (immigration) and economic justice (taxes). He has no executive experience.

Comment by Brian Keane

John McCain’s comments on Romney are a distortion of the truth. Of course, Mitt Romney’s whole current campaign has necessitated a distortion of his own record. Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton are alike in that their positions have been determined by fear of polls. In fact, the Republican legislative performance and resulting chorus of rhetoric has been such a distortion that when an old school Libertarian like Ron Paul speaks, he seems like he’s way off on the fringe. Republicans would do well to pay more serious attention to the Libertarian part of the party, as the mainstream of the party have been spending like a teenager with a credit card. The resulting devaluation of the dollar is what is causing discontent on mainstreet. What if the rhetoric of trying to win in Iraq was really a distortion of trying to save face over impetuous, bad decision making? Would that be worth the blood and treasure? Didn’t the concepts of a “mushroom cloud” or “mission accomplished” or “Saddam linked to Al Quaeda” prove to be distortions? I don’t recall hearing any outrage from Rush Limbaugh’s camp over those.

Romney is a career politician. Just because he hasn’t always held public office doesn’t change that. Notice Romney is nearly indefensible when contrasted with Ron Paul.

Elect a real conservative in 08! Ron Paul in it for the Long Haul!

Outfundraised all Republicans, including Romney.
More military supporters than John McCain.
More votes than Guiliani.

Ron Paul is the answer that Fox News and the LAGOP want to hide from you.

Comment by Joseph, Grand Rapids, MI

Drew, Mitt Romney has raised way more money than Ron Paul. I hope Ron Paul counts numbers better than you do, because we need someone that can add numbers in the white house. Good luck voting for someone that will never win. 5% nationally? What planet are you living on? Seriously, are you that blind that you can’t see that Ron Paul will never get the nomination? What are you trying to prove by voting for someone that clearly doesn’t respect party lines. He is not a conservative. Wake up and smell the blue, it all over Ron Paul. All he is doing by staying in the race is pull 5 % of the voters away from Republicans that actually stand a chance of beating the Democrats in November. Ron Paul would be eaten for lunch by the Democrats. Seriously, wake up, get an education or something.

Mitt Romney has:
1. graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School,
2. graduated top five percent from Harvard Business School MBA program,
3. has run several hugely successful businesses, becoming a self-made multi-millionaire
4. turned around Massachusetts economy

What did John McCain do in his life besides being a war hero, promoting illegal immigration (McCain-Kennedy), stifling free speech (McCain-Feingold) and promoting global-warming lunacy (McCain-Lieberman)?

BTW, McCain is supported by the same Republican Senate establishment that filed so miserably in 2001-2006 years. They deserve each other. I only wish Romney could fire them when he gets to White House.

Comment by Jeff

If you guys honestly think Romney is a conservative, the only ones you’re fooling are yourselves. I have one word for you: abortion. Try to help Mittens twist his way out of that little mess where he two-faced yet another issue.

I don’t care where they graduated, I know McCain is ready to lead this country now and capable of delivering Bin Laden dead or alive. Mitt was no great shakes as governor of the Ma$$holes. When unemployment was down near 8% nationwide, it was only down 1.2% in Massachusetts. Mitt promised $20 million in auto industry investment to Michigan to win their primary. Where do you think that’s gong to come from? He’ll raise fees just like he did in Michigan. When Mittens was at Bain Capital he made a profit by putting troubled businesses out of business and selling off their assetts. Some economic hero.

McCain’s the only candidate who beats Hillary and Obama head-to-head and can win the war on terror. Don’t send a mormon who’s never seen the battlefield to do a man’s job.

Comment by Mrjimbo, TX

Jeff,
I see you have aquired a trait from your candidate….false information spreading…..
Romney changed his views on abortion, yes, no flip flopping at all……..
Bain Capital restructured a lot of companies, started MANY companies, and very few companies has all their assets sold and disolved.
Would you rather see 300 people laid off, in order to save the jobs of 2000 more? or would you like to see all 2300 lose their jobs and the company go belly under?
Many companies out there need and have restructured.
McCain is the ONLY one who can win the war on terror, GOOD, maybe he can go over there and my wife and 150K other soldiers can come home, considering I wont be able to see her for another 5 months…..

as far as the mormon thing, guess you are a bigot as well as ill informed.

by the way,
McCain….against tax cuts, now for tax cuts…
for amnesty …..now against amnesty
McCain/Leiberman
Keating 5
gang of 14
nice qualities, you admire that eh?

You are so misinformed, puppeting sound bites and smear campaign sites. If you’d do a little research of your own you’d find that most of what you have been listening to is twisted and full of half truths. None of it gives you the full picture.

It takes an enormous amount of time to do your own research, but it is well worth it.

McCain McLies. His stubbornness to accept the truth on this topic is disgraceful and deplorable. It’s a shame when a grown man refuses to take responsibility and apologize for his dirty tactics and smear campaign to get political gain. I came across a quote the other day from you McCain during the 2000 election that states that you “would not take the low road to the high position for President”….so much for that promise? I guess times have changed, just like your politcal agenda (McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman)? It’s time for the “staight talk, no walk” express to derail.
