There is always going to be some revisionism with historical figures -- Earl Ofari Hutchinson did a killer deconstruction on the recent rewriting of Martin Luther King Jr's legacy -- especially those who have died, so, let's dispense with the niceties: John F. Kennedy did propose the landmark civil rights bill and that is most of his "legacy." Actually, the record was mediocre. Just some of the highlights: Opposed the 1957 Civil Rights Acts. Used this as a wedge issue against Nixon! to help capture the "solid South" in the 1960 election. Did absolutely nothing for civil rights in his first year of office. Encouraged, told or instructed Robert Kennedy to sic Adam Clayton Powell on Martin Luther King, threatening to expose an imaginary sexual scandal with Bayard Rustin, MLK's black gay top lieutenant, to prevent a march in Los Angeles. Opposed the 1963 March on Washington. Refused to deploy troops to protect the Freedom Riders. Ignored the Albany, Georgia bus station riot. So many more lost opportunities to choose from....

In the early 1960s, obviously, JFK's attention was diverted to Cuba, Berlin, Vietnam, and, increasingly, Marilyn Monroe and other actresses. If Kennedy capitulated to the blacks, the Southern white Democrats would revolt. If he did nothing--which he mostly did--the violence would continue and world attention would focus on the inept White House. The Kennedys had a horrible relationship with Congress, so, there wasn't much the president could on his. On the other hand, by sitting on his hands, the violence quotient increased, which is why he was forced to "propose" the 1964 Civil Rights Bill. Oh yeah, this probably helped endear his family to black voters in Chicago and New York City. There was an election in 1964 ...

 Come on Kathy, living in Chicago, you above all should know the absurdity of Obama's message of change. Obama is a part of Chicago politics. Rezko is the first thing that comes to mind. Either Obama was totally clueless about the misadventures of Rezko (which should send up warning bells about someone wanting to lead this country amid the even worse corruption of DC politics) or he is lying through his teeth about the situation. Chicago politics was dirty before I was born and they are just as dirty as they ever were. There is not a political event that happens in our "State of Illinois" that does not the stench of Chicago politics on it. It has a lot to do with why so many of our governors and politicians seem to play "catch me if you can" with the legal system. Obama's message of change is as phony as a three dollar bill. He just has not been in the system long enough to accumulate as much baggage as the most of the political candidates in both parties.

If I had any doubts about voting for Barack and Michelle, they were put to rest by the time I read half the comments on this discussion. As anyone can easily recognize, just by looking at the speech, grammar, curse words, anger and ignorance of the "anti-Barack" movement, the state of our nation is in bad shape.
What is especially sad is the fact that most of these Hillary/Edwards/Republican fans don't even realize how good it could be with Obama's candidacy of hope. I must assume most have no idea that they can't spell, write or speak well. I would bet most have taken their opinion right off the Fox News website without researching any of the candidates or their track records for themselves because our "education system" failed to teach them how to read.
The racial comments are just symbol of ignorance. I'm really sorry that America has done this to all of you. Sincerely, katychicago

p.s. if you guys can find someone capable of deciphering text above your reading level, have them read from Obama's website, the news services, Hillary's website, etc. etc. Good luck to you all, you are in my prayers. katychicago

Clinton has a great chance with, right now, only McCain beating her in a head-to-head match. She has much more support than Obama, who would also lose to McCain.

This is all about who Kennedy can manipulate better. He knows that Clinton is too wise to bend to his murderous will. She has her own plans. But Obama is a blank, empty, plan-less slate. He has no original idea, just a desire to tell others to come up with a plan.

Kennedy wants his plan to be that plan, so he'll throw his considerable, physical weight onto the workhorse and hope, despite lower numbers nationwide, he can win. Then Kennedy would sit pretty, whisper in Obama's ear along with Kerry, and get whatever he wants.

Which is why we need a candidate who won't be at Ted Kennedy and John Kerry's will. We need someone who really isn't a Washington insider. We need someone who won't take endorsements from Democratic establishments then say that he's outside of the establishment.

We need a candidate who really CAN change the country, not just talk about it while rolling in the money of party stalwarts.

The left tilting press has blown this way out of proportion. The only reason the Kennedy Clan is endorsing Obama is because they know Ms.Clinton has about as much chance as a snowball in hell of being elected president. I hope the endorsement came with swimming lessions. This much I know for sure, Obamalot will no more real substance than Camalot did. It is all smoke and mirrors.

The last emperor of the falling dynasty. Ted just can't face the reality that the name of Kennedy is getting insignificant. For the Kennedys, the role a woman can play and they accept is Merilyn Monro.People still remember all the sex scandals involving the Kennedys.
