Clinton Campaign Talking Points

The message of the day is on the economy, but the campaign’s also prepping surrogates and supporters for questions about whether Bill Clinton was playing the race card by comparing Barack Obama to Jesse Jackson (”Look, President Bill Clinton has spent his entire public and private life repairing the breach in this country…so I reject the premise of the question”) and Senator Ted Kennedy’s Obama endorsement (”Regardless of which Kennedy supports which candidate, we are aware that ultimately this election will be decided not by one family but by the voters themselves”).

Read the rest of the campaign talking points after the jump.

Daily Talking Points — Monday, January 28, 2008

DELIVERING REAL SOLUTIONS FOR THE AMERICAN ECONOMY

* As President, Hillary will deliver real solutions and make sure the American economy works for working families.
* The state of the union is about the state of people’s lives. For many people throughout America, the state of the union is a state of economic anxiety.
* Every day, Hillary listens to people who are hurting. People whose incomes are down while their health care premiums, mortgage payments, energy prices, and tuition costs are up.
* Hillary hopes that tonight, President Bush presents a real plan to jumpstart our economy now and rebuild our economy for the future.
* Hillary knows we need not only tax rebates, but also real solutions for people who are at risk of losing their homes, their jobs, or their health care.
* As President, Hillary will take responsibility for delivering real solutions for all our people. Solutions like ending the housing crisis, providing health care for every American, rebuilding the middle class, and ending the war in Iraq.
* Hillary believes leading an economic comeback is a fulltime, hands-on job.
* As President, Hillary will bring America together so that the state of union and our economy is what it can be, should be, and must be — strong.

DAILY Q&A:

JACKSON, FLORIDA, KENNEDY AND MOMENTUM

Wasn’t former President Bill Clinton playing the race card when he sought to downplay Barack Obama’s victory in South Carolina by comparing him to Jesse Jackson?

* No.
* Look, President Bill Clinton has spent his entire public and private life repairing the breach in this country.
* Both his Presidency and his post-presidency career have focused on unity, not division.
* So I reject the premise of the question.
* We need to focus on the challenges facing this country — the state of our economy, the continuing war in Iraq, the need for universal health care.
* And those challenges require a President who can come to the office ready to lead on day one, Hillary Clinton

Why is the Hillary Clinton campaign playing in Florida? No delegates will be seated and previously the campaigns promised not to campaign there.

* We are the only candidate who has not broken the pledge.
* While both sides promised not to run ads in Florida, Obama’s campaign broke that promise and is running paid television ads throughout the state.
* Senator Clinton has kept her word. While she has made private visits to the state, she has not made any public appearances and will not until the polls close tonight.
* But Florida clearly matters.
* An amazing thing is happening in Florida –
* People are already turning out in record numbers to make their voice heard.
* Over a half million Floridians have already voted.
* And for that reason we will continue having a presence in that state — but without breaking our word.

Liberal Icon Senator Ted Kennedy is announcing today that he’s endorsing Barack Obama. News reports say that Bill Clinton personally lobbied Senator Kennedy to stay neutral but was ultimately rejected.

* We have enormous respect for the Kennedy family.
* We appreciate that Bobby Kennedy Jr., Kerry Kennedy, Anthony Kennedy Shriver and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend all made different choices and are supporting Hillary Clinton.
* Regardless of which Kennedy supports which candidate, we are aware that ultimately this election will be decided not by one family but by the voters themselves.
* And when it comes to a direct comparison on the issues, leadership skills and experience, Hillary Clinton is the best candidate in the race to lead this nation moving forward.

Who has momentum going into February 5?

* This has been a closely contested race until now.
* But as we look ahead to Florida, American Samoa, and the February 5 states, which include California, New York and others — Hillary Clinton is better positioned than Barack Obama. In fact, two new polls give Hillary double digit leads in CA and NY.
* The reason? Hillary Clinton is more in tune with the concerns on the ground.
* Most of these states are facing economic pressures. All have military ties. All don’t want a patchwork solution to Healthcare — they want universal health care.
* And when it comes to the economy, Iraq and ensuring universal access to health care, Hillary Clinton is the best candidate in the race to lead this nation moving forward.

Comment by jerry

Billary has shown her/their true colors in SC. Win at all costs. Noone doubts their contribution to the Black cause, but they are not above using that clout in to play racial politics and divide the country. Now she wants to change the rules in Fla and Michigan after seeing the polls. With them in the White House, we can look forward to diviseness and paralysis in our Nations Capital.

Bill Clinton is campaigning like is the candidate. It is time for him to stay home and let Hillary speak for herself. The voters need to hear from the candidate. As a candidate she needs to be speaking with voters. Bill is doing damage to her campaign.

We want the best candidate at the Oval office.

Comment by Agnes

Thank you for writing the facts about Hillary’s campaign. Hillary addresses most of my concerns, health care, economy and alternatives to higher gas prices. Barack on the other side campaigns and talks nothing but, “Yes We Can”. Frankly, I’m tired of hearing that. I want to hear about his health care policy, economy and how it’s going to benefit everybody in America.

Comment by pAUL

Note that Ted Kennedy does Not have a good record of endorsing “winners”… previously endorsed Al Gore and John Kerry … Democrats who Lost!
I want a Democrat who can Win and that’s why I’m Sticking with Hillary. Who cares what

she is on her way out, you all can kid yourself to you hearts content but just watch the rest of this play out. she’s on a downhill slide to behold, its kinda funny to watch her try to hold on to that greased rope. ha ha

Comment by Jean-Marc

Don’t you find it interesting that Fox would post Hillarys talking points…

And Karl Rove talking her up as well?

Perhaps they realize the best candidate to go up against a Republican (and lose) in the general is Hillary (and that a Hillary candidacy would motivate a fractured republican party)

And anyways, aren’t distributed talking points just more of the same old political machine that is destroying American Democracy?

Comment by Shirley

Thank you for an informative and honest piece. The rest of the media has been so awful in twisting everyone’s words and trying to make it racist when it clearly is not. I suppose there will always be those who thrive on hatred but thankfully most voters are showing that we are not thinking that way. Whoever wins the presidency, I hope that the other side will just shut up and stop the hatred that much of the media loves to provoke.

HEY AISHA,

DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THE ARTICLE IS JUST REPRINTING HILLARY’S CAMPAIGN’S TALKING POINTS? IT’S NOT LIKE FOX IS FINALLY, ACTUALLY, REALLY BECOMING ‘FAIR AND BALANCED”, AND WRITING AN ARTICLE IN SUPPORT OF HER.

AND WHY DO YOU CAPITALIZE EVERYTHING — IT’S REALLY, REALLY ANNOYING.

Comment by Gorgon '08

Talking points are essentially how the politicians script their strategic messages to be delivered as “one voice”. The topics selected above by the Clinton campaign are quite revealing… they provide insight to the Clinton’s own perceived vulnerabilities and weaknesses

Today’s panic list includes: The economy (take focus off Hillary’s Iraq vote); explaining Bill Clinton (who is increasingly out of control on race); justifying Hillary’s manipulation the party rules in Florida; the Kennedy endorsements (begin to discredit the messengers); momentum problem (terrified that big mo could snowball to Obama’s).

The first comments above look like desperate attempts to have us ignore what these talking points imply. Time for a reality check, folks. Things are changing by the hour.

Re: pAUL

It does not mean Ted Kennedy has a bad record of endorsment, because Gore, and John lost the last two election, Bush stole the 2001 election, and he got elected for the 2004 election because America were scared that the country might get attack again, and thought that Bush was doing the right thing by going to war with Iraq. Ted Kennedy did make good endorsment, endorsing the two best candidate in the last two election. And now he is endorsing the best candidate again.

America is not scared anymore, they know now Bush was lying to the country, and going to Iraq was wrong. People will vote for the best candidate.
Obama is getting vote from the higher educated class while Hillary is getting vote from the lower educated class.

Voters should be reminded that Hillary’s first official act as first lady was to convene a secret assembly of advisors with no public oversight to develop a healthcare program. She failed dismally and has since refused to take responsibility. Bill had eight years to worry about about healthcare and did nothing. And the biggest fairytale of all is the Clintons taking credit for a strong economy, which we all now know was built on the fairytale of dot.coms and under Bill’s watch, companies like Enron and Worldcom hatched their frauds which has led us to the sorry economy we have today. And who can forget Bill and NAFTA. How many good jobs went offshore while the Clintons cozied up with big business. Does Hillary feel for her fellow citizens? Ask the White House travel staff.

Comment by Gorgon '08

As you watch/read the news in the next news cycle, compare soundbites against these list of talking points. It will identify those spokespersons who are under the Clinton’s spell.

This old style of politics looks to control public perception by controling and repeating key messages. Obama’s momentum has already made these talking points obsolete. When you need to spin your own previous messages or mistakes you are on defense.

The Obama campaign is now in full control of the campaign’s communications agenda.

Kennedy votes Obama. I vote Clinton.

Comment by Sarah

I agree - having lived in MA for a decade, Kennedy can only be described as fiercely liberal (I like to think of myself as a liberal moderate - or moderate liberal). The people backing Obama should look at this - the independents, the moderates, he is NOT moderate, and he lacks experience.

He is a brilliant speaker but he lacks substance. Why is the country so enthralled by him? Do we really need someone else in the White House who doesn’t know what he’s doing?

GO HILLARY!

Comment by Sarah

And btw - that is not true. I am a highly-educated woman (PhD in physics), surrounded by highly educated people. We are all endorsing Hillary.

So saying that Hillary is getting votes from the lower-educated class is simply not true.

Edward-Obama-Hillary

Comment by Pedro

If you’re a die-hard, yellow-dog democrat, you probably want Billary to win and feel confirmed by this message on the textual, surface level. If you’re a strategic-thinking republican, you’ve seen preliminary poll comparisons and prefer the Billary-GOP candidate match-up (instead of Obama, if you checked Zogby). So, you hope that the Clinton campaign uses these talking points to effect, regains steam and doesn’t lose the big mo. If you’re generationally behind the wave of boomers, you probably see the older generation as blowhards without a way out of political bickering that plagues our political process. You’ll try change, particularly to someone closer to your own generation, from either side of the aisle (though hopefully closer to the middle). You see Obama as a promisary note for a bighter future and you’re likely to surprise the older generations with the enormous and unacknowledged collective power of your vote.

Romney to win in Florida.

Comment by robert

Obama is a first term senator, who spent 11 years as a legislator. Hillary is a seconf term senator who spent her whole preceeding life as the wike of a career politician, who by the way, never held a job in the private sector. Hillary’s big lie is her career of public service. She was as qualified to run for the senate as Laura Bush, or Nancy Regan, for that matter.

Comment by Jules

Hillary should win and will win the presidency because she got more substance than charismatic Obama. Listen, this is not a Mr. Congeniality election where we vote for the best smile, the most charismatic, etc. Our country is in jeopardy of becoming a third world country and we cannot put an apprentice in the Oval Office. We need to stop thinking like cows and follow the Obamania herd. Let’s concentrate on what’s matter –the issues so to speak. Obama with all of his inspirational and eloquent speeches make me skeptical. I want someone with a high IQ, sharp, READY from day 1 and that to me is Hillary.

Comment by tOd

Interesting to see how angry the Clinton advocates have become since Uncle Ted’s endorsement and the trouncing in SC. It just shows the true colours of those who can’t accept NO for an answer- not a good leadership quality.

Perhaps Obama is the new paradigm of leadership for US interests.

I have personally not committed to a candidate … yet …

Ready from day one. If there were nuclear missiles on the way here, Hillary would commission a poll. Has anyone noticed that when Hillary has good news, she becomes almost giddy and when the news is bad, she is ready to commit murder. Not a very stable and reassuring presence, if you ask me.

Comment by Wanda

The Clintons are the reason we have had eight years of Bush. If they had a single ounce of respectability, we would have had Gore in 2000. Instead, they squandered all the political capital the Democratic Party had like a couple of drunks with winning lotto tickets. The Republicans are dying for a Hillary nomination, because she’s the one candidate that will fall flat on her face in a general election. Look at who is getting swing voters, because therein lies the key to electability in 2008.

“Insensitivity was reflected in a recent issue of the New Yorker, when Clinton’s veteran Latino political operative Sergio Bendixen was quoted as saying, “The Hispanic voter — and I want to say this very carefully — has not shown a lot of willingness or affinity to support black candidates.”
That brief quote from an obscure politician has generated shock and awe in Democratic circles. It comes close to validating the concern that the Clinton campaign is not only relying on a brown firewall built on an anti-black base but is reinforcing it. A prominent Democrat who has not picked a candidate this year told me, “In any campaign I have been involved in, Bendixen would have been gone.”

If a Hillary Clinton campaign official told a reporter that white voters never support black candidates, would the media have swallowed the message whole? What if a campaign pollster began whispering that Jews don’t have an “affinity” for African American politicians? Would the pundits have accepted the premise unquestioningly?”

“The Clintons attempted to make South Carolina a ‘Black thing’, they underestimated both the intellect and evolution of the southern state.”

Truth be told, Bill Clinton,s presidency was a failure in every respect, domestically, overseas and personally. He rode an economy built on lies and fraud, which lucky for him waited until he left office to collapse. Hillary will do the same; tread water for eight years, blame everyone else, and leave the country’s problems for the next poor sucker.

Comment by mark christopher

More generalized blather from the Clinton machine. Here’s a thought…how about being more specific? There is nothing safer than making generalizations about being in favor of nice things, against bad things, and the ever-popular “I have listened” tripe. If Hillary found her voice after New Hampshire, it is only because she suddenly remembered which face it came out of.

Speaking of having heard something:

I remember Hillary and Chelsea insulting a young U.S. Marine back in the early days of the Clinton administration, when Chelsea stated that she “loathed the military”, a position clearly inherited from her mother. The media has buried this incident but those of us with sons and daughters in the armed forces have not.

Facts Jeremy? Here’s some facts for you! Obama shut down his website at http://www.islamichope.com because he was pictured as a member of this organization that claims to want to unite all colors and religions, however, there was not one white or latino person on his website. When this organization was posted in the blog comments Obama shut down that site a few days later! Hmmm.. I wonder why? Then, he gets busted for his affiliation with Rezko, the slum lord and says ” well, I gave him back the money he donated to my campaign fund”, Sure….. Now, the most corrupt of all politicans, Teddy Kennedy, endorses Obama? Just goes to show ya that you are who you hang around with!

WISE UP!!

Do any of you know of Hillary’s experience? The only time she did not hold a paying job was when she was first lady. Again, I have a PhD - if I tried to do my job with say a Bachelor’s (nothing wrong with a Bachelor’s, my husband has one), I would fail at it miserably. Each position requires a certain level of education and experience. Obama is a great person, but he is just NOT READY. If he WAS ready, he would talk less of hope and change (I can’t find a soundbite from him that doesn’t have those words in it, it is driving me crazy) and more of what he’d really do. He’s a lot of talk, not a lot of substance. I’m sure he’d make a better candidate if he gained some more insight!

I am voting for the most qualified candidate that can bring us out of the mess that we’re in. And anyone who says that the former Clinton presidency was a disaster needs to read their history books (or maybe look at their past bank statements).

Comment by David Gibbs

“As President, Hillary will take responsibility for delivering real solutions for all our people. Solutions like ending the housing crisis, providing health care for every American, rebuilding the middle class, and ending the war in Iraq.”

I may not be getting it here, but these “solutions” sound more like goals to strive for than solutions. A solution is a plan that can be applied to a set of circumstances in order to reach a goal, like “ending the housing crisis, providing health care for every American, rebuilding the middle class and ending the war in Iraq”. Where in these talking points are the concrete steps that make up Hillary’s plans?

Don’t hold your breath waiting for her to present her plans. As soon as she does she will be attacked from all sides and will immediately be put on the defensive. No politician as clever as she is would ever be caught in such an untenable position. You can’t get elected by conducting a defensive campaign. So just keep the voters focused on things that sound high and admirable. Things that we all can agree are good and desirable. Don’t trouble them with details.

Well, unfortunately the “Devil is in the details”. Intelligent voters will want to be well informed about the particulars of her plans before they place her hands on the power knobs of our government.
