Obama v. Clinton: It’s Even

As we in the press corps wait for Senator Barack Obama’s 9 o’clock victory speech here at the Columbia Convention Center, the crowd is trickling in after going through security. Obama’s staffers are freely mingling in the press area - something they did in Iowa, but not in New Hampshire - or Nevada, when they all left the state before the caucus. A giant television screen suspended from the ceiling is blasting CNN - which just showed video of Senator Hillary Clinton leaving her South Carolina hotel. The crowd booed. The boos were just as loud when the monitor showed video of former President Bill Clinton speaking in Independence, Missouri. The crowd, of course, cheers every time the network delivers pro-Obama news. At one point the diverse crowd chanted, “Race doesn’t matter!”

Barack Obama began what would be a successful day in his candidacy at Columbia’s Bethelehem Baptist Church, followed by a quick stop at a polling precinct at the historically black Benedict College - sans press. A small press pool was allowed to accompany Obama to greet patrons of Harper’s Restaurant, where Obama exchanged pleasantries and posed for photos with nearly every table and some of the restaurant’s employees before leaving.

The Senator spent much of the day holed up in his Columbia hotel, where he did multiple interviews via satellite with South Carolina and February 5th state television stations. To unwind, Obama along with two staffers (including his body guy, Reggie Love, who used to play for Duke University and 6′8″ trip director, Marvin Nicholson) played a little basketball with some of Obama’s Secret Service detail. Obama’s team won the best of three contest, two games to one.

Shortly after the polls closed in South Carolina, Senior Advisor David Axelrod and Communications Director Robert Gibbs emerged from their hotel to walk the short block to the Columbia Convention Center. Gibbs told a gaggle of reporters that it appears the white vote was “far closer” than anyone had thought it would be - early exit polls show that Obama received a whopping 80% of the African American vote and 24% of the caucasian vote as compared to Hillary Clinton and John Edwards’ 38% each.

This is an election about delegates - not states, Gibbs said. The campaign sent out a statement that estimated Obama snatched 25 delegates here in South Carolina. Clinton picked up 12 and Edwards 8, per the Obama campaign. Their tally now has Obama leading the delegate count 63 to Clinton’s 48 and Edwards’ 26.

Gibbs waas sure that the race for the nomination would not be decided by February 5th. Expect a long battle that could extend into April. Gibbs was unsure if Hillary Clinton had called Barack Obama to congratulate him on his victory, but in a statement put out by the Clinton Camp, Clinton said she had called to “congratulate him and wish him well.” It continued, “We now turn our attention to the millions of Americans who will make their voices heard in Florida and the twenty-two states as well as American Samoa who will vote on February 5th.”

This is as it should be. hillary is the 90’s and Obama or Edwards is the future. The nation must put the democrat nominee out hillary’s reach.

Let the clinton’s go write their history as “THEY SEE IT.”

Get serious denise…Obama is a Muslim and he did admit it, but quickly said he is catholic now when he seen that his Muslim background was an insult to every American!!

Congratulations on winning in a racist state, Obama. You managed to publish racist memos to paint the Clintons as anti-black, and the imbeciles in South Carolina bought it along with the extra spicy original recipe.

Thankfully, there are 49 other states, 20 of which will decide that experience is much more valuable than skin color.

Clintonism turned me into a republican. If you want me back as a democrat, then get ALL Clintons out of our government. Hillary should not even be a senator. Send Hillary home and don’t even think about considering Chelsea for anything.

In the old days, Republicans were the first ones to fight for diversity and low spending. Now they fight to silence anyone different while spending everything possible. I guess you can’t always be a great party.

Isn’t it wonderful listening to Democrats accuse each other of
racism after years of dragging up this old cow against the Republicans.
Finally some Democrats are seeing the Clintons for who they are!

Comment by Ken

Anybody but Hillary in 2008.

Comment by Gary

Labels, labels, labels….I will begin by saying I am a registered Republican and have been for years although I am not so close minded not to listen to all sides and base my decisions on things such as honesty, character, values and policies. I don’t always, nor will I ever vote strickly along party lines. I would rather someone tell me the honest truth then just what I want to hear or what will get him or her elected. Sometimes the truth hurts. I could care less if the canidate is man, woman, black or white as long as he or she have integrity. With that said, I will have to say that there are very few canidates in this race that meet my criteria and I will say that the Clintons are definately NOT in that category. Open your minds and ask yourselves which canidate you would like to represent you, as an American abroad. I know that I want a true statesman with character and integrety as Commander and Chief. Oh, and by the way. Why is it that when someone is biracial, they are automatically considered BLACK? They are as much white as black and should be described as simply as an American.

Comment by Rae Ang

It is sad to see that the vast majority of Blacks voted for Obama. Clearly, this race is about race and nothing else. The blacks chose race over issues. They want change. Please specify for me what that change is? To have a black President. The word change is used so loosely, it means nothing, it doesn’t say what Obama stands for. Are the American people so stupid to follow so blindly such an ambiguous term. And as for being divisive. The votes in S.C. clearly showed how divisive a candidate Obama is. Mark my word if Obama is nominated the Republicans will be in the White House another four years. The reason Obama did well in Iowa was because they are not ready for a female president. Remember women did not get the right to vote until 1920, the blacks in 1867. Women still are considered by many second class citizens. Notice how few white males voted for Hillary. It is still a man’s world!!!!!!!! Remember, women only make 77 cents to a man’s dollar. American women, wake up!!! Here is an opportunity to empower women and show to the world that women are not second class citizens and are not the property of men ( like in so many Middle Eastern countries!)

Comment by Jack

Mike, you should read the polls instead of trusting Rush with your news. The only Republican that will win against Hillary is John McCain — and that’s by a VERY small margin. Every other one loses.

Meanwhile almost every Republican beats Obama.

Comment by Jack

Dawud, change what? What exactly will Obama change, please tell us.

Being black does not mean you will change anything. Promising change will not change anything.

So please, what will Obama change other than the name and skin color of the man in office? Absolutely nothing, that’s what.

I’m happy that Obama won SC but I still feel a little uneasy( I’m an undecided voter but I didn’t like the negativity from either candidate, and it seemed to start from the Clinton camp). I can’t help but feel that this victory was not only anticipated but encouraged by the Clintons. Regardless of what the polls show, Barack comes off as the “black” candidate. Of course this isn’t true but in politics perception is everything(the 81% African American vote for him didn’t counter this notion either, regardless of the 24% of white voters that went for him). This is not good for him coming up for Super Tuesday, especially in the West where Latinos favor Clinton over Obama almost in numbers close to his African American support(why this has not been analyzed closer amazes me). Basically, Obama will spend the next 10 days trying to become the “uniting” candidate, while the Clintons are off all over the U.S talking about the issues, things that voters really care about. Thus back to my uneasy sense, is a political move that borders on genius(in the worst possible sense), do the Clintons have Barack exactly where they want him?

Comment by Jack

Gonzalo, search “Obama racist memo” then say that the negativity and racism comes from Clinton.

Comment by David Schultz (Chicago)

The title of this article is a bit off. They aren’t exactly even. Popular vote? Obama has had more people vote for him if you add up all of the votes in all of the states thus far. Also, Obama has substantially more delegates than Clinton if you add up all the delegates across all the states thus far. They are only even on the number of states they have won the popular vote. Clinton won popular vote in Nevada but Obama had more delegates in Nevada. You would actually call it a tie in Nevada but it depends on what you consider to be more important… popular or delegate.

Anyway. What’s up with the stuff about Obama being a Muslim? Yikes, I hope were a little more educated/aware/smarter than that!! lol #1 You live in a country that supports freedom of religion. I for one am proud of our freedoms and my country! You as a Christian should know this country was founded because of the way Christians were being treated in Europe… so… even if he was (WHICH HE NEVER WAS) a muslim… why would you care? Government / Religion = Oil / Water. #2 Obama was never a muslim… that’s so silly… is it because of his name?? are you kidding? Are you just saying that to get a laugh/shock out of people? lol #3 That silly email that went out to people saying Obama was a muslim has to be the silliest thing I’ve ever heard in a modern presidential campaign.

One more thing…

Imagine - John Lennon

Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

Gonzalo,

Political Strategy though I can’t see how… so early in the race it would EVER be ANY good to loose ANY states. Winning is like a train starting to move… build the momentum and that train just keeps going and everyone wants to jump onto the train that’s moving faster. Than again, you could be right… sacrifice 1 state for the big win… loose the battle… win the war…. hmmm :) interesting.

Comment by David Schultz (Chicago)

Obama wins because of skin color.

Ignorance breeds statements like this. Early polls showed for many states that Clinton had the black vote. Matter of fact, one of Clintons favorite puppets was the president of BET (Black Entertainment Television) amongst other African voters.

Actually, Obama had the highest % of white voters too.

Obama is 50/50 he’s actually not African American but he is a mix. His mother is as white as a ghost! lol

Ignorance / racism / intolerance = you people pull us backwards while we who’s minds are free attempt to move us forward. Please, evolve.

How can anyone really vote for Hillary, just because they want to see a woman president. Think about this decision carefully, we really need to set our standards much higher for the first woman president. Don’t let the party rhetoric fool you, she is mean spirited and her & her husband’s judgment too flawed. These are the people that allowed sale of nuclear weapons to Korea & China, these are the people that regard an unborn child as an insignificant compare to selfish rights. None of us should be selfish when it comes to the protection of the helpless and human life in every stage.

Two differnt messages and the positive message won. Its a good day for Politics. We need to end the Bush Clinton dynasy and move forward, not backward.

Obama isn’t just for change, he is for a whole new kind of politics. The Politics of unity over division. The politics of hope over fear and the politics of change over the status quo.

Comment by Jack

David, you’re again wrong. Clinton’s highest numbers came from women through this campaign. Obama did not have the highest white vote from exit polls — Edwards and Clinton split that.

If Obama is “split”, why does he call himself “brother”? Why does he maintain he is the black candidate? Simple.

Racists and bigots do bring us back, but people who lie and manipulate the facts bring us to destruction.

jon, what change is Obama for?

Politics of hope? Is that the same politics that releases a memo on how to attack Clinton’s statements to make her look racist? Is that the politics of demanding apologies whenever someone questions your credentials? That doesn’t sound like politics of hope. That sounds like the same politics that have existed for quite a while now.

Thank you for the Obama selling pitch, but it failed when the charismatic racist you support tried it. He’s a lot better at it than you.

From the nature and tone of these comments one must conclude that divisiveness, pettiness and xenophobia are alive and well in the United States.

It is interesting how the candidates who profess to have the nations well being at heart allow this mindless bickering to proliferate and fester in the national psyche. How does all this anger so easily engendered in the wakes of their political rhetoric move the nation in any one particular direction?

If the electorate is upset and angry then they are likely to be irrational. If the electorate is irrational who does that benefit? Or perhaps one should ask, who is the lightening rod for all this ill focused discontent?

A great statesmen leads with a single concept easily codified that galvanizes the national psyche and focuses the energies of the nation. A mediocre statesmen leads only when forced to do so. A poor statesmen leads in every direction at once while beating their breasts saying ‘look at what has been accomplished.’

One must ask what has been shown thus far, great, mediocre or poor?

Hold them to a single empiracally high standard. Start with something as simple as requiring them to specifically answer a question and not just talk around it. Be bold and demand that they meet this simple standard and then and only then will things start to change.

Comment by Jack

Nelly, what proof do you have that Clinton’s campaign is calling Obama a Muslim? She has forced resignation of those who published the memo.

Even then, since when has being a Muslim been BAD? The fact that you and your shrills feel you have to defend this as an attack makes me disgusted that you consider being Muslim something negative.

Maybe you should look in the mirror when hunting bigots.

Nah. Honestly, I’d be happy with ANY Democrat after Bush. I’m not a liar but thanks for the drama-queen antics, you sounded real cool. Here is a quote from CNN regarding the vote brackets including the white brackets:

“Among voters 65 and older, Clinton beat Obama 40 to 32 percent. But Obama handily defeated Clinton in every other bracket, and overall garnered 58 percent of the vote among 18 to 64-year-olds while 23 percent of those voters picked Clinton.

And half of those polled said both candidates shared blame for the rancor between the two camps. Of those who said one of the contenders was more to blame than the other, 21 percent blamed Clinton, and 6 percent said Obama.”

There are three pertinent reasons why Obama is an inappropriate choice for ALL Americans.
HE HAS NOT THE EXPERIENCE!
HE HAS NOT THE QUALIFICATIONS!
HE HAS NOT THE MATURITY!
Obama has not provide a shred of evidence why he is better qualified than Clinton except to make his arguments personal and wholly racist. Oqjectively speaking, he would be the reason why the Democratic Party will lose to the Republicans in November. He has caused more damage to the Democartic Party’s cause than any Republican attacks ever could. His immaturity leaves me with the lingering thought he may be a planted Republican trojan. Why and how else can he explain the manifest danger he has cause the Democrats and the REAL HOPE of all Americans for a better tomorrow. Unless sanity and fairness returns, there is mountain to climb in Noverber.

Comment by Denise Matteau

This old news story concerning Hillary Clinton and the death of Vincent Foster needs to be revived and you must pay special attention to the part about the wallpaper accounts. I am Denise Matteau, and I was the assistant color-matcher at the small company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts that printed that paper. Over $200,000 was channeled through that company and several people, not just Vincent Foster, eventually died as a result. I was forced onto disabillity and kept from speaking. I was hounded for years by Hillary Clinton’s activists in the arts. I have photos of one of the shows that was forced into cancellation because the curator was defying the Clintonites. They control Pittsfield Massachusetts and have been using it as a criminal Clinton money conduit since the 1980’s.

My brother is James Matteau, the Vermont official (Windham Commission) who was given an award by Howard Dean not long ago, in anticipation that he will follow the Clintonites into Washington. He owes his job partially to his willingness to co-operate with the members of my family who ran some of Clinton’s dirty money through county channels in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Renee Matteau Burke was the prime mover. I was supposed to co-operate as an artist but I refused. James and Renee teamed up to destroy me and my daughter. Renee’s son Joseph Burke is one of the accused killers of Barry GRiffin, Jr whose father, Barry Griffin Sr was a union steward in a position to blow the whistle on the money conduit that my family handled. That conduit was established in 1983 and it served the Clintons from the very beginning of their careers. Hillary’s Wellesley, Massachusetts connections were heavily involved.

Recently I tried to revive the wallpaper story but found that all evidence that Berkshire Hand-screened Wallpapers ever even existed has been expunged, EXCEPT FOR THE EMPLOYMENT RECORDS! I got a copy of my old employment records from social security this week.

Thank goodness that Obama is running and winning a strong campaign to oust the Clintonites from politics.

David, despite your pathetic insult, I will educate you:

There are two sets of delegates for Democrats. One group is appointed for the convention, these are chosen as representatives from the district and they usually are beholden to the electorate. If Bob County votes for Obama, then Bob County’s representative will put the mark down for Obama. 2,000 or so of these votes and Obama wins. They are NOT elected — they are appointed.

However, the Democratic party builds in super-delegates. These are elected officials — mayors, governors, representatives. They are not held to the electorate and their vote is representative of their office. Mayor of Bobville will say Clinton, and while there was not election for this, his choice is seen as representative of his office and his electorate.
