McCain, Romney are “getting kind of nasty,” Giuliani says
Orlando, FL — Rudy Giuliani may have finally found his message for Florida voters: Can’t we all get along.
Responding to the escalating war of words between John McCain and Mitt Romney, Giuliani said Saturday that the American people are “tired of the name calling and finger pointing.”
“If you listen to my opponents, it is getting kind of nasty,” Giuliani told a “Women for Rudy” event in Orlando. “We don’t want to become like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton right? They are trying to work their way out of it, we dont want to work our way into it. Right?”
At a media availability after the event, Giuliani savored the opportunity to cast himself as the optimistic candidate with a vision for Florida—calling on his opponents to strike a cease fire.
“I think this election should be about the positive things, about what we can do, what we can accomplish. I’m concerned that some of my opponents are engaging in negative campaigning using words like ‘dishonesty,’” he said. “The reason I am being positive is I believe that is the way to win. It seems to me you sorta got that message when you saw what happened in Iowa with Mike Huckabee. The American people are sending us a message that they want us to be positive–that they are tired of the name calling and finger pointing.” (See video above for more)

The annual “Gay Pride” events in Boston, as in other cities across the country, regularly feature obscene and degrading floats, handouts, and activities:
“During his 2002 gubernatorial run his campaign distributed bright pink flyers during Pride that declared ‘Mitt and Kerry [running mate Kerry Healey] wish you a great Pride weekend! All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference.’ Romney also argued that he would not only support gay friendly policies but would fight on behalf of the gay community to secure benefits such as domestic partner benefits and hospital visitation rights for same-sex couples.”

Nominating anyone but Rudy would be suicide for our party.
You may be a nice guy Rudy, but your just not presidential enough. Maybe next time around…
Good luck!
I agre with Key 100%. Go Rudy!
I would never vote for Mr. McCain because he is a flip flopper. Consider that he equivocates on two of the most important issues of our time: (1) immigration, and (2) taxes. He attempts to label Mr. Romney as such, but in reality, it is precisely the opposite.
I’ll certainly vote for John McCain as he is a true partriot who puts America above any special interests!!!!
For once as a Republican in Florida I have a candidate I’m proud to vote for…John McCain rather than someone already picked for me like in 2000. I think Rudy and Huckabee are fine candidates and fine individuals however.
McCain also is lying more than usual as he becomes more desparate.
He claimed during the debate that he won the majority of Republican votes in the states he has won so far, but Romney won a majority of Republicans in New Hampshire, and Huckabee won a majority of them in South Carolina after Romney pulled out of that state to focus on Nevada.
McCain also foolishly tried to make Russert look like he was fabricating a quote for one of the debate questions addressing “Mr. DoubleTalk’s” weakness on economic issues.
“The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should,” McCain had said, as though the subject wasn’t that important. “I’ve got Greenspan’s book.”
The quote appeared earlier this month in publications includinge the New York Times, Seattle Post Intelligencer, Centre Daily Times, Chattanooga Times, and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.
Mr President - Mike Huckabee. He has strong values, excellent fiscal track record, and is the person who is least influenced by corporations and big money. Go Huck.
McCain must be making headway as the negative attacks are starting to come out against him…his service to his country speaks for itself…it can’t be refuted…other candidates (Huckabee and Rudy) are fine people, but for this time in America’s history, I believe John McCain is the right person for the White House. I vote John McCain!
Desperate “straight talking” Senator McCain has once again tried to win support among conservative Republicans by telling whoppers about Mitt. It won’t work. The people of Florida are way too smart to fall into his wolf in sheep’s clothing routine. We want the true blue through and through candidate…Mitt Romney!!
Did you notice during the debate questions the other night, that when Senator Paul asked McCain a question about economics, HE HAD NO IDEA what the answer was!! All he resorted to doing is mentioning all the names of people on his economic team. Is this the kind of person we want as our president? I’m really tired of his lies, and his distortions of the truth. He truly is a desperate man.
Romney’s money isn’t going to work for me….John McCain’s service to his country is more important than money…I’m voting for McCain!!!!!!
McCain is the one “getting nasty”–angry and bitter. Should McCain get the nomination–I am voting for Barack Obama. I am a registered republican but I would rather vote Obama instead of McCain!
If you’d rather vote for a Democrat than a true American Patriot then I feel sorry for you! The rest of us will gather around John McCain!
All I know is spending is out of control and McCain is the only candidate not in bed with the special interests and willing to cut the pork barrel spending by everyone!
John McCain learned everything he knows about the economy by being involved in a savings and loan scandal. Remember the Keating Five everyone? McCain is a dirty bribe-taker. Did you all forget? Some patriot! Sell your office for a buck?
Its Rudy all the way for me! I don’t think the other guys have the background in economics and understand foreign policy beyond Iraq.
BTW, nastiness is usually a product of dropping your ideas and fighting instead. If McCain or Romney deserve to win they should be able to convince us without personal attacks.
So, A. Burns, did the S&L scandel stop you from voting for Bush, the brother of one of the biggest S&L criminals around? Probably not as it didn’t stop me! Let’s cut the attacks and all get together to beat what will be the really detrimental to the United States, the “wave the white flag” democrates.
I agree Flying Man…McCain’s willingness to buck members of both parties to control the extreme overspending by the Government is why I’m voting for him.
McCain is playing nasty… From all I read, I saw the cheap shots from from McCain camp. Can Rudy really play the Edwards card?
This whole Romney - McCain fight of words.. interesting note—
Surprise… when you have democrats on FOXNEWS defending McCain… Another surprise it was Hannity that came to Romney’s defensive.
I thought McCain was enemy #1 of democrats. This kinda makes you wonder?
McCain playing straight out of Hillary’s play book.
This is getting ugly.
I have to admit as a conservative Republican I was so proud of our guys during the debate. We looked like we were working as a team. It has gotten ugly since then, not Hillary/Obama ugly, but ugly. McCain’s statments about Romney were far fetched to say the least. I think we all wanted to set goals on the war. It isn’t smart to start a war without thinking about the consequences and having goals in place. Romney may not have responded the best to this attack, although I’m not sure how I would respond. I think if McCain keeps up these attacks then he will alienate many voters (I personally just don’t want to watch any more of them stooping to the level of the democrats). McCain might take Florida and even the Presidential nomination because of these attacks, but he will alienate the conservative right and surely lose the White House. If he is going to beat Romney, let him do it fairly, and positively.
Can’t believe anyone thinks McCain is playing nasty after what happened to him in 2000 in South Carolina by the Bush camp…did eventually vote for Bush though it did hurt!!
I would think that all the top tier Republican candidates should apologize. We are at war. This bickering is insipid. The war issue IS the economic issue. They can NOT be separated. We need to cut somewhere and empire building is the first choice, especially since we are not even going after Osama bin Laden, the man who killed 3000 Americans! It is very painful to watch, particularly since Osama explicitly claims to have bankrupted the old Soviet Union and wants the same for us. He may get his wish if we do not get focused on what is truly important in our foreign policy. And cut the unneeded military bases over seas.
We each seem to have our own major issue(s) that make their choice for President seem like the best one. The economy is a big one for me. My question is: Would someone tell me why we should NOT elect Ron Paul?
The rest, with Richardson and Kucinich out, seem to be talking crazy talk (or did last week, who knows what the Democrats will say next week!) about our military adventures in the Middle East. Additionally, no one else seems to understand the problems with the economy, inflation, and out of control deficit spending. Inflation is going to eat us alive, as it has already started to do so. Do you really believe that the REAL inflation rate last year, the rate that was used by the government for Social Security check increases this month, was 2.3%? Just look at the price of gold up 30% in 2007, now at an all time high and getting higher!
One can not talk about tax cuts without ALSO talking about cutting spending. We have a $9 trillion debt (nearly double since 2000) that must be paid so we can afford Social Security and Medicare. The interest payments will go sky high when we begin to fight inflation with higher Federal Reserve bank rates.
And we must stop inflation or everyone’s life savings will go down the tubes, along with the middle class, like what has happened to the middle class in most countries south of our border. And do not forget Universal Health Care, which is coming down the tracks right at us, unless Republicans begin to understand the seriousness of runaway deficits and inflation. And start educating the country. A Democratic President will surely not fight inflation like Volcker and Reagan did!
Please vote Ron Paul and save the country from bankruptcy abroad and at home!
I agree DenisL that “One can not talk about tax cuts without ALSO talking about cutting spending” and that’s why I’m voting for John McCain!
Dan — follow Rush and Ann Coulter to your demise if you wish…me on the other hand would rather have John McCain than a democrat!!
I like Rudy, but there’s no way he can carry the GOP. He and John McAmnesty do not represent true conservative values. If you consider yourself to be a true conservative - take five minutes to review their positions and values on their sites. You will quickly learn that Rudy is way to close to center and John McAmnesty might as well join the Democratic party! MITT ROMNEY is the only true conservative left in the GOP after Fred dropped out. We will miss you Fred, but Mitt is our hope for values, ethics, and future
ooopps!! Dan was on the Romney to McCain: “He Should Apologize.” blog!!!!
How about a Obama/McCain ticket? They will carry the centrist/populist/middle straight to DC
“John McCain is Bob Dole minus the charm, conservatism and youth. Like McCain, pollsters assured us that Dole was the most “electable” Republican. Unlike McCain, Dole didn’t lie all the time while claiming to engage in Straight Talk.” –Ann Coulter
“If nominated, John McCain will destroy the Republican Party.”- Rush Limbaugh
“Florida will be the beginning of the end of Juan McLame’s career of fighting for amnesty, teaming up with liberals against tax cuts, giving your social security away to illegals and being the single biggest backstabber to the conservative movement.”- Me
Let’s count McCain’s “conservative credentials”:
-he wrote the bill granting amnesty to illegal immigrants (co-sponsored by Ted Kennedy)
-he voted to give your social security money to illegal immigrants
-he voted against the Bush tax cuts multiple times (he has since flip-flopped and has campaigned as a lifelong tax-cutter)
-he routinely engages in Democratic class warfare against big companies in America
-as recently as December 2007 he admitted “he doesn’t know the economy very well” and needed to get better at it
-he wrote the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill that was declared to be an unconstitutional infringement of the 1st Amendment (co-sponsored by ultra-liberal Democrat Russ Feingold)
-he was called the “worst 2nd amendment candidate” by the president of the NRA
-wrote a bill (co-sponsored by his buddy Lieberman) imposing a massive tax on energy which, according to the Heritage Foundation, would drastically raise the price of gasoline and put many US companies out of business
-supports radical global warming legislation which involved him voting with every Democrat
-he joined forces with Democrats (“Gang of 14”) to block the Senate Republican’s attempt to confirm conservative, strict constructionist judges
-he joined liberals to fight against a federal marriage amendment supporting the institution of traditional marriage
-campaigning in 2000, he famously described Christian leaders as “agents of intolerance”
-he filed an amicus brief against pro-life advocates in Wisconsin
-he met with leading Democrats in 2004 to discuss the possibility of being John Kerry’s Vice-President
-with most of these positions, unfortunately, McCain hasn’t flip-flopped and vows to fight for these liberal causes as president
-if I wanted to elect a Democrat, I’d vote for Hillary or Obama
Let’s now look at some of his endorsements:
-New York Times
-Geraldo Rivera
-Joe Lieberman
-Bill and Hillary Clinton
-nearly every member of the liberal media (most Newspapers have endorsed him for this very reason, phrasing his strength as an ability to “attract the support of liberals”)
If you’re a Republican, do not let the most liberal elements of the media tell you who to vote for and who is “electable”. Electability polls fluctuate wildly every week (+16 this very week in favor of Romney). A recent example: Bob Dole was considered far and away the “most electable” Republican because he was respected by Democrats and because of his military service.
Voters in Florida and around the country, if you’re a conservative, consider whether McCain’s career record of liberal positions and ineptitude is actually the best you can hope for. Consider if he’s the most electable candidate even if many prominent conservatives have vowed to “sit out” this election if he’s the nominee.
Spread the word to other conservatives before the liberals on TV and in the newspapers steal this election away from the conservative movement (lower taxes, stronger families, stronger military, no amnesty).
Ok, now I can say it…!
Dan — follow Rush and Ann Coulter to your demise if you wish…me on the other hand would rather have John McCain than a democrat!!
To Mark:
So as a strict conservative, I don’t see a problem with this. Romney shows his views on fighting for the RIGHTS of everyone. Is this bad? He has been the strongest fighter for the sanctity of marriage act, but he isn’t trying to take away rights of others. Should we take away someone’s rights, because you don’t agree with them?
I don’t agree with homosexuals. I think it is wrong, and many other things that I won’t say, but they are still people. So why do you look at this like it is a problem?
Romney is the leader we need for the future of our Country…..
Go Mitt!
I endorse John McCain!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, so John McCain is a patriot…That’s nice. No argument. But so was John Wayne and Ted Nugent, but that doesn’t mean that they should run the country. Challenges and big problems are common place in the world today. We need someone with creativity, ingenuity and who is SUCCESS oriented. Alot of McCain’s supporters come from “the greatest generation ever”, i.e. 60+. We appreciate your service to the country, WWII, etc, etc. But, now it’s time for some new ideas and creativity. MITT ROMNEY epitomizes that.
The DEMOCRATS want to feed people fish so they won’t starve. That’s nice. MITT ROMNEY wants to teach people HOW to fish, so they can feed THEMSELVES for the rest of their lives!!!!
It’s time for Mr. McCain to pass the torch. Thanks for your service… NOW ENTERING…PRESIDENT MITT ROMNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not so fast my friend, the best generation was WWII….that was McCain’s father! McCain was Vietnam War!
I vote McCain…(though I could easily support Huckabee or Rudy)!!!!
TO SEE WHAT OTHER TRUSTED SOURCES THINK ABOUT MCCAINS LIES LOOK HERE:
http://thepage.time.com/2008/01/26/romney-demands-apology-from-mccain-for-dishonest-remark/
I’m not saying McCain is from the greatest generation ever. I’m saying alot of his supporters are. My point is that they put alot of of stock into patriots and war heroes when it comes to the making so of a good president. I’m saying that it’s time for a new type of thinking, OTHER than what is present in the greatest generation.
War heroes as presidents were good for that generation, i.e. IKE. But now the world is different; much more DYNAMIC and VOLITILE.
McCain is too stale. ROmney much more agile and creative
Ironically, Ryan, it’s Romney that’s getting the old people’s votes.
Exit polls show he receieves less than 10% of the under 40 crowd.
Huckabee, of all people, ranks highest among the 33 & under set.
Whatever…McCain is still too stale…Huckabee lacks the agility.
Agility? Are we discussing yoga or politics?
Agility..in terms of dealing with a myriad of problems with efficiency and creativity.
Thanks for the clarification…I thought maybe Romney was ‘going for a gold medal’ in gymnastics - He’s actually pretty flexible with those muscles that go flip and go flop.
Rudy all the way!
He’s staying positive and thats important.
But look at the attacks,
McCain is accusing Romney of not having enough experience with foreign policy and terrorism.
Romney is accusing McCain of not having enough experience with the economy.
Simple fact is, Rudy has them both. He turned around the economy of NYC, and he will do the same for America. He cute taxes 23 times as mayor, and got the worlds 13th largest economy rolling again. He created 420,000 thousand jobs in the CITY as oppsoed to Mitt’s 52,000 in his STATE. His message is simple, REDUCE GOVERNMENT. This is THE conservative value. This is what makes us conservative, the idea that people should be repsonsible for themselves and that the government needs to be smaller. Its simple. We need to stop over-taxing, over-spending, over-regulating, and over-suing. We are taxing and regulating business OUT of America, and Rudy is the only one who seems to recognize that.
GOD BLESS RUDY
hey florida…got to go…be back soon…don’t drink all the kool-aid…save me some
Okay, buddy!
Actually, gotta go myself - we Huckabee supporters have church in the morning.
Romney- I support you now more than ever. It is absolutely incredible that everyone is “ganging up” on you. You are the man to beat. They will take out all the stops, but you are holding firm.
You have the experience, the leadership, and the morals we need to lead our nation.
You are the man! We support you overseas.
You will win Florida and you will be the nominee.
Romney 2008!
Mikey,
Thank you for your self-righteous comments. This Huckabee evagalism is disturbing. I am a Mormon and am quite frankly digusted by the constant barrage of the evangelicals telling the rest of us to vote for Huckabee because his an evangelical. I actually was a fan of Fred Thompson until he dropped out. Now, I am going to vote for Mitt Romney, not because I am a self-righteous Mormon, but because I believe he is the best candidate left in the republican party. While I respect the evangelical faith and believe a person with moral principals and strong religous beliefs is vital to leadership, I can’t help but think Mike Huckabee and the evangelicals forgot they don’t have a monopoly on moral prinicpals and strong religious beliefs. Call me after church if you want to talk. I get out ot 2:30.
I just spent the day at Republican Party headquarters in Queens, NY (which has endorsed Giuliani, by the way) calling into Florida to get out the vote. Out of dozens of people I spoke with, most support Giuliani, and the remainder are in the “I’ve got it narrowed down to two - Giuliani and someone else.”
The “someone else” was McCain or Romney, so I spent much of the day telling people that we need a proven fiscal conservative in the White House, someone with a long history of tax cutting and fiscal responsibility. That would be Rudy! We also need a social moderate, someone who hasn’t flipped flop all over trying to figure out what is going to work to get him elected - once again, Rudy! I think most Republicans are like me - concered primarily about the economy and the war on terror, followed closely by immigration (which of course impacts the first two.) Rudy is obviously strong on the economy and the war on terror; and for those who question his immigration policies, keep in mind that as mayor of a city, he had no control over immigration! That’s a federal issue. Let’s see what Rudy does as Commander in Chief to clean up this immigration mess - I guarantee you it will be better than either Romney or McCain.
I’m a simply guy - I just need a fiscal conservative (supply sider a la Reagan) and a social moderate, and I’m good to go. The fact is, Rudy is the only candidate who meets both requirements. For those of you who are “abortion firsters” - well, I have no use for you. We all know that Roe v. Wade was an egregious case of “legislating from the bench,” but you know what? That was in 1973! It’s not going to be overturned - get over it! I’m sorry to tell you, but it’s the law of the land, and at a minimum, you can trust Rudy when he says he will appoint strict constructionist judges. That’s all you can hope for FROM ANY CANDIDATE!
You want to know what kind of person makes the best candidate for President? Someone who stood up to the mafia, and won; someone who took on liberal-democratic NYC, and not only won, but turned the City back into the “greatest city in the world”; someone who we all turned to for leadership and hope on the blackest day in American history; and finally, someone who has the guts to make promises and stick to them.
I’ll be blunt - for some inexplicable reason, we are looking at having McCain (Democrat in disguise as a Republican) or Romney (a person who’s economic policies as illustrated by his time as Governor, would be disastrous for the United States) as the Republican nominee. This makes no sense to me. We have a fiscal conservative, a social moderate, someone who attracts YOUNG voters and voters from every race/religion out there, and yet we’re close to losing him! WAKE UP PEOPLE! How can the Republican party torpedo the only chance we have of nominating a candidate who will carry on the work of Ronald Reagan, but who is socially moderate enough to win the general election? Are we crazy? Are we really going to lose this guy because there’s a vocal minority within the Party who can’t stand having someone with an “i” on the end of his name in the White House? Forget the bigots who spend all their time repeating the same tired lies that Rudy’s opponents have been using for over 10 years! Forget the bigots who constantly show their true feelings by calling Giuliani a “fascist” like we don’t realize that what they’re really saying is they don’t like him because he’s Italian.
We have a small window of opportunity to do what’s right for the Party, and what’s right for the country. SO LET’S DO IT!
As a Floridian, with Christ’s endorsement, I’m seeing the momentum build up for McCain! You can tell on the blog that the Romney supporters tactic are to spew hate toward McCain, Huckabee, and Rudy. They’re getting shrill down here in Florida because they’re seeing the millions being spent wasted. Vote John McCain!!!
Rush, Ann Coulter, and Sean Hannity jammed George Bush down our throats in 2000 in South Carolina…now they’re trying to jam Romney down our throats. Let the “real” Republicans choose. I choose McCain, but could easily support Huckabee or Rudy!
CONGRATS MCCAIN AND HUCKABEE!!!!
Republican Presidential Nomination
RCP Average:
John McCain 27.1%
Mike Huckabee 19.4%
Mitt Romney 17.3%
Keith when you gonna learn the ‘polls’ aren’t accurate. They showed Clinton ahead of O’Bama and look at what happened in SC.
Of course, the media favors McCain (a liberal) and you have to give Romney (conservative) credit for doing as well as he is. If it were more of a fair playing field he would have it in the bag.
Romney ‘08 !!
Yeah, I know the polls are very accurate…but it does help explain why the Romney people who’ve spent millions seem to be getting desperate by attacking McCain and Huckabee….
Republican Presidential Nomination
RCP Average:
John McCain 27.1%
Mike Huckabee 19.4%
Mitt Romney 17.3%
I will never vote for John McCain — He is a sham and to use these tactics takes the lowest of low roads.
“The McCain camp sent out a barrage of press releases to back up their attack. None of the quotes sent showed Romney calling for a specific date for troop withdrawal but did have Romney supporting a private timetable for progress on the war to be worked out by U.S. and Iraqi officials.”
It’s a shame the Romney supporters can only attack the other candidates.
“It’s a shame the Romney supporters can only attack the other candidates.”
Anyone that puts out false information like John McCain is a dirtbag and unworthy of my vote. John McCain deserves to be called to task ( or as you call it, an attack ) for this type of garbage campaigning and I want everyone to know McCain is a fraud and needs to be exposed for this type of crap.
Romney is no way called for a withdrawl timetable — McCain F*&Ked up and he needs to take back these comments.
Nice language Mik…getting frustrated that you can’t buy this election?
Romney is a gentleman - it’s too bad the others have to be so jealous and can’t stick with the truth on issues. The last obvious distortion of McCain’s was a disgrace. He ain’t no hero in my book.
Play fair Mc/Huck …. please… it’s tough enough as it is.
