Romney and McCain: Dueling Internet Ads

Ft. Lauderdale—

This evening the Romney and McCain camps launched dueling ads on the Internet. The Romney campaign put out theirs first, “Waltz.” It shows Senator McCain on Fox and Friends using his own words on tax cuts.

Over music, (I’m assuming it is the waltz) text appears on the screen between McCain sound bites going back and forth on tax cuts:

“I’ve always been for tax cuts.”

“Although I voted against the first tax cuts.”

·

Then the McCain campaign put out a response web ad, “Mittsurfing.” In the release the campaign says, “Waltz” is “a false, misleading attack that distorts John McCain’s record.”

The ad shows a man windsurfing with Mitt Romney’s head superimposed on another body, over the same music as “Waltz.” The ad focuses on Romney’s infamous reputation as a flip-flopper:

“Mitt Romney says he’s a leader, but how do we know which direction he wants to lead? Mitt Romney seems to change positions like the wind.”

“Where does Mitt Romney stand? Whichever way the wind blows.”

Seem reminiscent of another famous ad? My colleague, Malini Bawa points out that McCain advisor Mark McKinnon is behind the 2004 John Kerry windsurfing ad. They are shockingly similar even using the same final line. Click below to see the ad from 2004:

Gosh McCain, can’t you come up with something original?! Copying Bush’s Kerry ad was Not very bright! All Romney did was play some of your actual words. You LIE in your ad because you misstate Gov. Romney’s tax record. So there is less respect for McCain in this household.

Mitt Romney cleaned house by all accounts in the debate tonight. Every analyst agreed. He knows the economy cold. It’s in his DNA. He’s a tax-cutter. He’s brilliant, he’s visionary and an ethical family man.

McCain looked tired and old, and he’s a downright bad debater. He also lied about his former quote that he “doesn’t really know the economy very well.” His campaign has already apologized for his “misstatement”. A little “straight-talk” detour I guess. McCain’s decision to vote against the Bush tax cuts multiple times, fight pro-lifers in court and write the amnesty bill with Ted Kennedy earned him the unenviable position of being endorsed today by the New York Times. Ouch. This guy is the biggest RINO of all time.

Giuliani is irrelevant, obviously.

Romney has my vote in Tampa. Romney will carry Florida and ride that momentum into the general election.

Go Romney in ‘08!

McCain is a pathetic liar and that commercial showed it. America is about paying your own way. I much prefer increasing fees for select services than establishing across the board tax increases. I really like Mitt’s record in Massachusetts that I studied and watched closely during his last year in office (2006).

McCain even denied his own quote about how he has no real economic experience… I remember him saying that about a year ago and it was a direct quote. His desperation is obvious and his campaign is running on empty even after taking out a $3 Mil personal loan for himself. His 2nd (current) wife is worth $50 Mil but childishly makes fun of Romney for having money. At least Mitt earned it by working hard at Bain Capital and not just marrying into it.

I look forward to seeing and even older McCain running in 2016 with yet another new book out. Funny how those books seem to have great timing with his campaigns. Great publicity, I guess. McCain, I bought your FakeTalk Express in 2000, I even bought your book back then, but I will never go down that road again. As a proud, lifelong, Republican, I will never again vote for McCain, even if he makes the general.

GO MITT!!!!

“I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I’ve been a hunter pretty much all my life.” (Romney’s campaign later said he’d been hunting twice, once when he was 15, and once in 2006 at a Republican fundraiser

“I saw my father march with Martin Luther King.” (Romney’s campaign later admitted that they didn’t march on the same day, or in the same city)

This is your leader? PATHETIC!!!

“McCain l… also lied about his former quote that he “doesn’t really know the economy very well.” Comment by Dan

Ahem, that quote quote was from 2005. At least he had the integrity to admit his weaknesses. And that was from two years ago. And a lot has changed since then for John McCain.

And on Bush’s tax cuts, Romney was silent on the matter. So he didn’t support them. Otherwise he would have came out favorable.

And plus, do you know why McCain voted against the cuts? Because there were no accompanying spending cuts. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that when you decrease tax cuts, and increase spending, you get a big DEFICIT, and your currency DEPRECIATES! Which is where we are now.

Comment by Dan “He knows the economy cold. ”

He knows the economy cold? Right. If he did, than he was lying through his teeth in MI when he told those workers that he’d get those jobs back.

Any high school economics student can tell you that those factories that have left are not coming back. So Romney was lying. Plus his solution was even worst. He was going to get government and unions involved with industry. Sounds like some kind pseudo communist system. I thought we wanted less government in our lives?

At least McCain had the integrity to tell us the truth and offer real solutions, like job training and reeducation, and tax cuts.

Romney has no integrity, is no visionary, and only a political opportunist. Seems like he pandered to you and succeeded.

“And plus, do you know why McCain voted against the cuts? Because there were no accompanying spending cuts. ”

What a load of garbage!!! I’ll use the analogy of a starving john mccain, he comes and asks for food, you have 1 piece of bread and will only give him half (either cutting spending OR cutting taxes) either half will feed him better than nothing but instead of taking at least SOMETHING and working towards getting the other half of bread, he refuses EVERYTHING and starves his withered old body right out of serious presidential contention! Yes, the spending may have been out of control as he says, but the tax cuts HELPED AMERICA!!! cutting spending ALSO would’ve helped america, but he had the choice at least one of these things to help the citizens and he fought against it. His ad is a desperate attempt to hurt the surging mitt romney.

Romney never raised taxes, he increased some fees, but even at most that was only 250 million, i don’t know where john is getting his 700 mil from? perhaps he forgot to take his Alzheimer’s medicine?

Mitt in ‘08 and beyond!

Comment by Mark in Hawaii

I posted this thought on a different thread but feel it may have some relivence here.

Taxes are indiscriminately confiscatory on all who fall under the jurisdiction.

Fees, while paid to fill the government coffers, are for privileges and therefore can be avoided. The distinction is, that one can choose not to pay and still enjoy the “staples of life” free from prosecution.

You want to drive then pay the fee. You want to advertise your restaurant on the interstate, pay the fee. Some of the fees had not been raised in ten years.

No one has discredited his accomplishment of turning a 3 billion dollar deficit into a positive rainy day fund. Fees are not taxes.

Mitt Romney, President of the United States of America . . . (has a nice ring)

Comment by EZLoafer

McCain said he would still vote against the Bush tax cut if given another chance, and then said he wanted those tax cut be made permanent.

How smart is that?! It’s worse than ‘flip-flop’. It’s called ILLOGICAL.

“Any high school economics student can tell you that those factories that have left are not coming back. So Romney was lying.”

Do you know why Japanese auto industry performs way better than the US one? If you want to be a surrender monkey, please just keep it to yourself.

“He was going to get government and unions involved with industry. Sounds like some kind pseudo communist system. ”

Do you know why he mentioned the unions? The unions is the main factor for the uneven playing field, and Romney probably wants to help address that.

Be imaginative, or at least acknowledge that there are presidential candidates who are smarter than you.

“It doesn’t take a genius” to develope coherent rational arguments. However, it does take a willingness to research the issues. McCain is re-writing history my friend.

In 2001 McCain said he opposed the tax cuts because, “I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us, at the expense of middle class Americans who most need tax relief.”

That’s very original McCain, unfortunately your ad is full of distortions, while Romney’s ad is simply using your own words against you!

“I’ve always been for tax cuts, errr, but I voted against them, but now we need to make them permanent” GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

McCain wants to be President soooo badly, and has wanted to for years and years, that he will not go down without a fight–watch for more dirty politics and lies from him before he falls!

MITT ROMNEY FOR PRESIDENT!!!

Comment by Dan

I think McCain comes out looking like a fool from both of these ads.

Romney’s ad uses McCain’s own words against him, and shows his flip-flop on the tax cuts.

McCain’s ad copies an old ad about John Kerry, and tries to nail Mitt Romney on tax cuts, when Romney has just come out with a huge economic stimulus package that cuts taxes permanantly.

McCain, don’t even try to compete with Romney on this issue, you come out looking like a fool every time!

Mitt is going all the way to the White House!

Romney claims to have saved the 2002 Winter Olympics, but with a $1.2 billion federal bailout, anybody could have saved the Olympics. Also, he never mentions Fraser Bullock, his hands-on COO / CFO and the millions of Mormon volunteers who would have done anything to avoid embarrassing Salt Lake City with a failed Olympics!

As for Bain, it’s easy to get people to work 18 hours a day if that’s what it takes to affect a turnaround in the private sector. I worked for a consulting firm & they fire you if you don’t produce. If you think this translates to getting the public employee unions in DC to support any program of change, you’ve never been to Washington. Oh right - like Romney. A President needs to know how to lead for results in the public-sector culture. Read ‘Citizen McCain’ if you want a taste of what it takes to get anything done there.

Comment by J Potter

The wind is blowing for tax cuts, and that is the way McCain is going. He voted against Bush’s tax cuts but know he would make the Permanent. That is a flip flop. 2002 Winter Olympics are one of 2 Olympics to make money. (LA, Salt Lake). There was money let to keep open the oval, the ski jump and bobsled and they add cross country skiing. The money comes from a trust not the tax payers. The fed did put out some money for roads like interstate 15

Comment by Dano

The thing that I’ve discovered about McCain is he only takes an interest in certain things. If the debate had focused on national security he would’ve done better. However, he doesn’t really care that much about the economy. There’s another debate on January 30th in Los Angeles. I would expect him to come better prepared to discuss the economy then, but really, not by much. It just doesn’t interest him.

Mitt Romney on the other hand has gotten better in every single debate. There is no doubt that after the debate is over he sits down and evaluates what he did well, and where he needs to improve, and then improves. Mitt struggled a bit with Huckabee’s 2nd ammendment question. You watch, in the next debate he will be prepared and polished on the issue.

Since it is widely viewed that Mitt won the debate last night, that doesn’t bode well for his competitors.

Visit http://www.conservativesformitt.blogspot.com to see two instances where the media caught McCain not “Straight Talking,” as he would call it, and several other McCain Flip-flops.

Romney’s next ‘campaign’ will be to become a god in the next life. Even if, God-forbid, he somehow wins this election, he won’t win that one! (The one, true God has no term-limits!) And, for those of you who think such a statement is irrelevant to a political discussion, to millions of Christians in America (most of whom are Republicans), a candidate’s fundamental beliefs/worldview/theological underpinnings are critically important. Who a candidate IS (at his or her core) is of much greater significance than anything he or she SAYS (which in Romney’s case, will likely contradict his previous statements). As a lifelong Republican, I would vote for Hillary before Romney - at least she has (as far as I know) no blasphemous aspirations for godhood.

Comment by Rex in Orlando

Wake up you Romney Robots. A few short years ago your Mitt was a disciple of Ted Kennedy and said he was NOT anything like Reagan and Bush (check out You Tube). Two weeks ago he was hammering Huckabee about “how dare Huckabee not agree 100% with all of Bush’s policies”, and “I’m the only true Reagan Conservative”. A few days later he was shouting “Washington is Broken and I’m the Change Candidate”. What will he say and Who will he be tomorrow? I’ll tell you who, whoever he thinks he needs to be or say to get the next vote.

I guess it depends on what the definition of “SAW” is! “If I imagined it, then I SAW it, same thing”. I’ve been an avid hunter all my life”. HUH?

He needs to take up wind surfing, like his fellow Bostonian!

Comment by Rex in Orlando

Try searching Mitt Romney on You Tube and find him taking almost any position you want. He was for gun control, then against it. He was for abortion, then against. He was for gay rights and gay marriage, then against it. He marched with MLK, then his father did, then he decided neither did. He was against Bush, then for him, then against him again. He raised taxes (OH, wait he raised fees) more than any other Republican candidate, yet he runs ads saying it’s the other guys. Of course he’s got so much money he can say what ever he wants, and say it over and over again. Guess he can even buy the Presidency. He changes his positions with the wind, but he knows he can always out attack whomever he faces, cause he’s got so much money (and lots of it tucked away in offshore accounts) so he can just out smear anybody.

Problem is, if he got elected, which Romney do we get? The one more liberal than Ted Kennedy (watch the Kennedy/Romney debate on YouTube), the one who wants to be like Bush or Reagan, or someone in between. Maybe it depends on how much money you have, or who’s vote Mitt wants.

You Romney haters can try as hard as you like to distort his record, his religion, his life. But it won’t change the fact that his message is resonating with the American people, that he is climbing in all of the polls, and that his support is growing!

good scoop michelle.

If you are in Florida, please go to a McCain event and ask him about this guy, what his opinion is on America’s right to secure our border.

Hey all,

Has everyone heard the sizzling evening underground news about Mike Huckabee tonight?

Mike Huckabee picked his Vice President running mate and a few top ranking cabinet members today.

Huge Huge Huge news!! I mean Huge!!

Wall Street is buzzing with the latest news, stocks are going to surge up for sure with this positive upbeat economic news.

This is going knock the other candidates off their feet for sure. Wow, I’m still shocked, not only is this going to be a huge economic stimulus jolt for stocks to surge up but Iran and terrorists organizations are going to be shaking their knees and sweating when they here the news too.

I mean this is a super huge jolt for his economic and defense team. Big Big Huge news!

You are going to have to wait to hear the news as it is timed sensitive news, wish I can release it, but can’t.

News media outlets are going to be buzzing around the world with this sizzling news. Mike Huckabee really likes pulling out the “Shock and Awe” right at the last minute.

Psshhh. McCain is a phoney. He is a flip flopper. First he says the Confederate flag has the right to wave, then he changes his mind. Then he provides “amnesty” to illegal aliens. And obviously he has reasons. One of these reasons is so he can appeal to people as a nice guy. Wow, fancy using taxpayer money’s to improve your own image. Romney did not increase taxes by 700 million. Baloney. He did increase fees, however, but he enforced laws as they were and filled in the loop holes of big business. Isn’t that a governor’s job? Helping the people he serves? The state only accumulated roughly 200 million from fees. Romney turned around a 2 billion+ deficit into a state surplus. He is the one we need for our economy. McCain is 71-72ish. To dang old in the words of Chuck Norris. Defeatable by Hillary Clinton. Romney for President.

Comment by cj

To Dr. Mike B.

You keep on saying that you are only questioning Romney’s “core beliefs,” but Romney’s belief in God and his potential to become one have nothing to do with any decision he would ever make as president. It never ceases to amaze me how people think it is perfectly legitimate to vote based on religious beliefs. I admit that there are some religious beliefs (sanctity of life, gay marriage) that are applicable to politics, but Romney’s belief in the nature of God will never affect his ability to balance the budget.

Please stop denying the fact that you are a bigot.

Comment by Dr. Mike B. (FL)

cj,

I have no need to convince you that I’m not a bigot any more than you have to convince me you’re not an idiot. A person’s core beliefs have everything to do with who they are and how they function. If a person believes, for example, that God was once a man (because a farmboy in upstate New York said so 170-something years ago), or that wearing certain so-called ’sacred’ undergarments will protect them from harm, that does legitimately call into question his or her fitness to lead our nation. Besides, it is Mormons themselves who make the ‘bigoted’ claim that theirs is “the one true church,” that “all others are an abomination in God’s sight,” and that there is no way to get to the highest level of heaven (the celestial kingdom) without becoming a Mormon. All these teachings are offensive to me because they contradict the Bible and are marketed by a man-made cult that erroneously claims to be Christian. Such issues may not matter to you because: (a) you have no faith, (b) your faith is of little importance to you, or (c) like so many of his supporters, you share Romney’s religion. In any case, “Lord, have mercy!”

Wow, Linda, intelligent argument.
I have nothing against Mormons - I know dozens personally, and they are decent people.
My beef is with MormonISM. In fact, it’s my love for Mormons (including those dozens I know - most of whom are members of my family) that causes me such concern. I hate to see good people deceived. Which is why, on a side note, I hate to see Romney become the Republican nominee. In any event, my opposition to any one woud never cause me to call him or her an ‘ignorant pig,’ as you have called me. I hope my replying to your insult hasn’t sullied or muddied you in any way.

Dr. Mike, thank you for being civiled on this matter. No, you have not insulted me in anyway, I just would like you to be not so bitter against Mitt Romney. I ‘ve followed the LDS church to America from Asia, and I am proud of the choice that I made 20 years ago. I am raising a good family, and teaching them to love and serve one another as the Lord has expected us to do. My son will soon going on a mission to preach the gospel with his own money during the prime of his life, ( just like Mitt Romney did many years ago), I know what is being taught at the church, and I used the same principle that I learned from the church to teach my own family. I am not as smart as Mitt Romney, but I know what Mitt Romney had learned and practiced is of good and high moral. So please stop persecuting Mitt Romney and the LDS church.

Taxes and Fees

A survey of states by the National Conference of State Legislatures found Massachusetts led the nation during Romney’s first year, raising fees and fines by $501 million. New York was second with $367 million. Nine other states raised fees and fines by more than $100 million.

“We renamed him ‘Fee-Fee.’ He was so unwilling to raise taxes that he was wanting to put all these fees in place instead,” Hachey said.

“It’s a shell game,” said Julian Zelizer, professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University. “He (Mitt Romney) can still say he didn’t raise taxes, but fees are taxes by another name. It’s a trick.”

Romney’s fees could also grate on some of those he is courting as he seeking the GOP nomination, including gun owners.

Under Romney’s plan for Massachusetts, the cost of registering firearms would have jumped from $25 to $75. He also called for increases in the cost of firearm identification cards, application fees for a license to carry firearms, and gun dealer fees.

Gun owners said they felt unfairly targeted by Romney’s proposed increases. Democratic lawmakers applauded Romney’s proposal — ultimately raising the cost of gun licenses to $100.

“We certainly shouldn’t be paying anything for our Second Amendment right, because it’s a civil right,” said Jim Wallace, executive director of the Gun Owner’s Action League.

Boston.com - August 2007

2nd Amendment

In his 1994 US Senate run, Romney backed two gun-control measures strongly opposed by the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups: the Brady Bill, which imposed a five-day waiting period on gun sales, and a ban on certain assault weapons.

“That’s not going to make me the hero of the NRA,” Romney told the Boston Herald in 1994.

At another campaign stop that year, he told reporters: “I don’t line up with the NRA.”

And as the GOP gubernatorial candidate in 2002, Romney lauded the state’s strong laws during a debate against Democrat Shannon O’Brien. “We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them,” he said. “I won’t chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety.”

Today, as he explores a presidential bid, Romney is sending a very different message on gun issues, which are far more prominent in Republican national politics than in Massachusetts.

He now touts his work as governor to ease restrictions on gun owners. He proudly describes himself as a member of the NRA — though his campaign won’t say when he joined. And Friday, at his campaign’s request, top officials of the NRA and the National Shooting Sports Foundation led him around one of the country’s biggest gun shows.

Boston.com - January 2007

Abortion

The National Review article, by John J. Miller, also noted that Romney said during his gubernatorial campaign that he would “fully protect a woman’s right to choose” abortion but now says his “political philosophy is pro-life.” And it quoted Romney adviser Michael Murphy as saying: “He’s been a pro-life Mormon faking it as a pro-choice friendly.”

WashingtonPost.com - June 2005

When he ran for US Senate in liberal-leaning Massachusetts in 1994, Romney said abortion should be ‘’safe and legal.” As a candidate for governor in 2002, he said he would keep the state’s abortion rights laws intact and has since said that he kept that promise. But this year, as he began preparing a potential run for president, Romney said he is ”in a different place” than he was when he first ran for office in 1994 and has stressed that he is ”personally prolife.”

Like Frist, John McCain, the Republican senator with the highest national profile, has reversed his position on the issue and now supports an expansion of the research.

“It’s a very complex scientific issue,” McCain (Ariz.) told NBC’s Tim Russert earlier this year. “But for us to throw away opportunities to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and many others I think would be a mistake.”

Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), another possible presidential contender, is a longtime critic of the House approach.

“The vote in the House to allow taxpayer-funded destruction of young human lives is deeply troubling,” Brownback said. “We all have a duty to protect the innocent, and this vote represents a failure to recognize the scientific fact that stem-cell research that destroys embryos kills young human children.”

TheHill.com - October 2005

That doesn’t sound like a 100% Pro-Life voting record to me.

In 2004, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said he opposed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage:

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona broke forcefully with President Bush and the Senate GOP leadership Tuesday evening over the issue of same-sex marriage, taking to the Senate floor to call a constitutional amendment that would effectively ban the practice unnecessary — and un-Republican. “The constitutional amendment we’re debating today strikes me as antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans,” McCain said.

But yesterday, ABC reported that McCain confided to Jerry Falwell that he would support such an amendment:

McCain “reconfirmed” to Falwell that he would support a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman if a federal court were to strike down state constitutional bans on gay marriage.
