At FL Debate, Huckabee on McCain’s Age: I Disagree with Chuck
q Reporter: Chuck Norris one of your most vocal supporters recently said that at 72 senator McCain would be too old to withstand the rigors of the presidency. Do you agree or disagree?
McCain to Huckabee:” Did you you get my response?”
” I did, and I did hear what Chuck said, I was standing with him, and I didn’t disagree with him at the time, because I was standing next to him (laughter). It is as simple as that. This is a guy that can put this foot, on that side of my face, and there’s nothing I can do about it” Huckabee said.”I have said publicly many times, I don’t think Senator McCain lacks the rigor or the capacity to be president. And I said if you look at his mother, and see her strength at 95 , of all the things we can pick on Senator McCain for, that ain’t one of them.”

How can you not like this guy? He has the ability to defuse tense situations. I’d trust him in the White House dealing with our “enemies.” He’ll make them laugh, and they won’t even know that he’s actually pretty tough. His “see the gates of hell” comment in the last debate showed me he isn’t afraid to use a little force if necessary. Huckabee has my vote.
Mike Huckabee is the greatest communicator of all the candidates, Republican or Democrate.
He’s a solid enough preacher i suppose, but “great communicator?” He’s losing steam, and it’s showing. Whatever else he may or may not be, he surely isn’t conservative.
I agree with the above posts. Huck seems to be the brightest, most well spoken candidate that I have seen since Reagan. Since Reagan, I have always voted under the Independent ticket because I could not swallow any of the other candidates and I have been rather embarrassed of the last two Presidents we have had in office. I can now say, after tonight’s Florida Debate, I have finally found a leader I could be proud of. Think about that for a second. Wouldn’t that be a change in the right direction?
Mac I also agree with you in some small part;however, I think us “conservatives” are trying to find someone (anyone) we thinks has a chance to beat Hillary (or whomever else the Demwits have to offer). But this is the wrong strategy and it will not work (asks the Demwits how that strategy has worked out for them these past 8 years). I believe this guy is the best for our country now and at least for the next 8 years. Let him try his “flat tax” plan. If it fails, we can always go back to our current failed tax system. The “conservative” movement may seem careful by popular opinion (probably simply out of ignorance because of the actual term conservative), but we have never been afraid to make sweeping and very progressive reforms. Why not look at our Tax system!!!
you people are insane…mike huckabee represents everything that is wrong with this country…realize you exist in a world of diverse thought and practice and then perhaps you may be eligible to run the greatest democracy in the history of man…until that time bizarre comments about emigrants from pakistan and analogies of dead unborn babies replacing latin illegals does nothing but lend to an aura of detachment from reality in the world today…
Huckabee scares the crap out of me PRECISELY because he is such a genuine nice guy. His policies are HORRIBLE: wants to ban abortion, wants to amend the constitution to turn America into a Christian theocracy, doesn’t believe in evolution. But unlike a lot of the haters on the extreme right who share these views, Huckabee is a likable guy, and so the country would be in extreme danger of some of these policies actually passing.
Huckabee is a nice man and all, and I would let him baby-sit my kids, but not my country.
He didn’t have the courage to disagree with his personal friend because he (Norris) was standing there. That is quite a statement coming from a man who claims to be ready to be Presidemt of the USA. If he can’t correct a mistatement by his ally how are he going to handle an enemy?
Oops, “how is he……
The court jester gets scraps from the table because he is amusing. Nobody ever said he has to be intelligent. Fortunately, he isn;t going anywhere as the American people, as usual, do learn from their mistakes and will reject this clown in the serious adult world and send him back to the servants quarters over the stable in very short order. 60 days from now the question will be, Huckabee who?
Actually Mike is a very good orator and I think he’d make a very good candidate against the Clintons but he just doesnt have the ability to attract money. The Big money folk want somebody who will scratch their back when the time comes and thats why candidates like Romney and Clinton get so much money. If Romney gets the nomination I’m voting for Clinton.
The Clintons campaigned AGAINST Huckabee four times in Arkansas and Huckabee beat the candidate they supported each time. If he can beat the Clinton machine in their own state, I say bring them on in November!
McCain-Huckabee ‘08
“I agree with the above posts. Huck seems to be the brightest, most well spoken candidate that I have seen since Reagan.”
I really think that folks who make these sorts of claims haven’t heard everyone speak. For instance, check out this interview with Ron Paul at Google headquarters. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCM_wQy4YVg
Anyway, on the topic at hand, it’s good of Mr. Huckabee to defend McCain’s age.
From Vineyard Haven, Martha’s Vineyard, Dukes County, Massachusetts.
Crispin, many people believe that evolution has not been proven. Huckabee does not want to establish a theocracy; he has said many times that there should not be a religious test for office. BUT he has also said that the fact that he is a man of faith should not be held against him. We need to give him the same freedom you claim he would deny others. Abortion needs to be banned except in extreme cases. It has become the birth control method of choice and that is just plain wrong.
I’ve come to a realization that the people that read on-line articles and take the time to respond probably aren’t the people that are leading this country but unfortunately make up large voting blocks. Most of the posts come from illiterate writers who want to spout ignorant ideas. If you like a candidate, express your view in proper English with proper punctuation (when allowed since I know some sites limit the # of characters). If you don’t like the candidate, explain how their approach differs from yours. Let’s try to get away from the name calling approach of the main-stream media and actually have an effectual voice in the process. If you agree with this, let’s hear it!
I have heard the claim that Huckabee is a nice guy, but lacks what it takes when it comes to running a serious enterprise such as the national government. Not many doubt his ability as an orator. But can he run the country?
If that is your serious question then I encourage you to read his book, “Character Makes A Difference.” I am currently reading it because I had the same question and now after having read half of the book I am convinced that he can. Within the first few chapters he gives his political history and talks about how he became governor. Read the story and you may just be convinced as well.
Mike Huckabee’s books are a great source of information; I am reading From Hope to Higher Ground and also Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork.
I doubt Mike’s detractors have read any of his books.
Ann,
Letting someone babysit your children, but not your country. How screwed up is that!!! I think you need to go back to the box and rethink your life positions. Mike Huckabee is a nice guy and he has morals. I would hate to see who you think is qualified to run this nation. Hilarious Hillary maybe!! All of Huckabee’s positions are the correct ones, now and for the future. They are the correct positions, because they come right from the book called the Bible.
It’s obvious that you like Mike Huckabee as a person, because he is a genuinely nice guy. I’m not sure that his positions on the issues scare you as much as they convict your conscience. Abortion is murder whether you want to acknowledge it as such or not. Evolution is a theory and a failed one at that it. It has been proven false whether you want to admit it or not. To think that such a complex society started out as green slime at the bottom of a pond is an absolute joke. How educated are you anyway. A three year old has more sense than that. But, if you want to believe that you evolved from and ape, I guess I’ll go with that.
Are you serious? Comparing a Presidential Candidate w/ Ron Paul?
Lowell,
I have read From Hope To Higher Ground also. I agree with you. I don’t think any of his detractors have read any of Mike’s books or even his platform on his website. It’s all good stuff. Not only is he a great orator, he is also a person of high moral character and obviously has well thought out positions. He will make a great president.
You know what would be cool is if Huck was president he could pardon all the criminals because we need more people in the work force, yeah, that would be agreat idea. Then he could change the constitution because our fore fathers didn’t put much time or effort into it. Yeah, cool! Cause it needs to align more with God. Then he could put us all to sleep at night strum’n his guitar, oh how sweet.
One of the biggest falsities that people love to throw around in politics is that: “you can’t disagree with my candidate, you haven’t read their book.” You don’t have to spend four hours reading a biography to learn what operates at the crux of a person’s philosophy. It is in what the say, how they act, and what they support. I’m willing to bet that every person in here that read Huckabee’s book had already decided that they thought favorably of him before they even opened the cover. If you don’t like what someone has to say or what they stand for, then you needn’t bother with reading other literature that they authored. Can you imagine how much time we would all waste if we embarked upon reading every politicians’ latest bestseller before we formed an opinion of them?
After Huckabee finishes with his failing campaign, he and Chuck Norris should go into business together selling weigh loss machine. They should call it,
“The Huck & Chuck Total Loser Gym”.
Huckabee cleaned up AK and rebuilt their economy while being harassed by a highly-partisan ethics commission with ridiculously petty accusations. He may not be as savvy as McCain but he’s still a strong, moral guy. I think he’d make a great running mate for the nominee.
Big Joe,
Teeheeeheee!!
Huckabee has too much questionable history.
It’s astonishing to see so many blind followers of Huckabee. If this man is a strong moral guy, why would there be 14 ethnical violations brought against him? Several of them where related how finances where handled, his personal gain and conflict of interest.
Why would a strong moral governor ordered 83 computer hard drives and 4 servers be erased in leaving the governor’s office to run for president. That’s what crooked CEO do in the business world.
Why would there be accusation of $70,000.00 worth of furniture missing from the governor’s mansion in Arkansas when he moved out?
Huckabee was also named one of the top 10 most corrupted politician in the country.
You certainly don’t see that much questionable history of the other candidates.
Anyone who believes that humans came from apes…and who believes that it’s okay to kill unborn children (which I used to be, and so did you)…doesn’t deserve to vote. Anyone with such anti-human ideas obviously shouldn’t be trusted to pick a good leader of a human society.
Why would we want a religious extremist as our president? Can you people not see the problems that the same thing causes in the rest of the world? This guy should not be allowed to be a politician at all, not even a mayor of a town of 200 people. Some important things to think about follow.
Crime
* As governor, he strongly advocated the release of convicted murderer and rapist Wayne DuMond, going so far as to hold a private meeting with the state parole board to discuss placing DuMond on parole (such a meeting is a violation of the state’s Freedom of Information Act).
* Huckabee granted 1033 gubernatorial pardons and commutations while serving as governor of Arkansas — more than the previous three governors of combined — and showed particular leniency to inmates whom had converted to *Christianity* while imprisoned. /*
Who cares if a criminal converted to Christianity? We are talking about government _not_ religion.
The Economy
* His lies of omission about his fiscal record would lead us to believe that he cut spending in Arkansas by $378 million; however, state budget records show that he actually increased spending by $505 million.
* During his tenure as governor, state spending increased by 65.3% (more than three times the rate of inflation), and the average Arkansan’s tax burden increased by more than 50%.
* He begged the Arkansas state legislature to raise taxes in order to meet a $100 million dollar spending gap, rather than cutting or scaling back other programs — i*ncluding hundreds of millions of dollars in welfare and tuition checks for illegal immigrants*. Huckabee could have kept taxes at their previous levels by cutting a mere .77% of the state’s spending in other areas.
Welfare and tuition for illegal immigrants? So who’s paying for that? Taxpayers? I can’t afford my own tuition let alone pay for someone else who is here illegally.
Foreign Policy
* His view on Iraq is that “we bought it because we broke it,” and he claims that America must continue its occupation of Iraq “until we can leave with honor.”
* He believes that the land of Israel was promised to modern-day Jews by God, and that “the Jews have a God-given right to reclaim land given to their ancestors and taken away from them.”
* He supports giving Israel unrestricted access to U.S. research, weapons and technology.
We are not going to leave with honor, we already screwed that up.
P.S. You want your freedom and your liberty? You want to live in this country as it was intended to be? Vote Ron Paul. The media won’t support them because they are supported by the same corporate lobbyists that support screwed up candidates like Mike Huckabee. Maybe you should shut off the tv and read for a change. There is only one candidate that represents the values that our country is founded on; why would you vote for anyone else?
Go Mitt Romney!!! Everyone I know is voting for Mitt Romney! God bless Mitt Romney, his family, and our country.
VOTE MITT ROMNEY 2008
Ted,
Wrong. The most anti-human belief a person can have is in mysticism. It denies humans of all the great achievements that are derived from our minds and our intellect. When you declare that it is not you, but outside forces are what really affects your life, then what are saying about how you value yourself? That is precisely and unequivocally anti-human.
Mitt Romney is part of a religious cult.
Mitt Romney wants to put GPS tracking devices on all felons? Retarded.
Mitt Romney is not consistent and changes views to appeal to what people want to hear. If you are running for president you know EXACTLY what your views are…period. If you change them during your campaign, you are DEFINITELY a liar. If a candidate is proven to lie about one thing, then it is my conclusion that they must lie about a lot more than that. Mitt Romney cannot be trusted.
Mitt Romney will get us into bigger war troubles than we have already. I view him as a modern day Hitler and his supporters as brainwashed Nazis. You people have your heads in the wrong places.
We need our freedom back, we need our money back, we need to be reasonable and get our country under control. Vote Ron Paul.
“Evolution is a theory and a failed one at that it. It has been proven false whether you want to admit it or not. To think that such a complex society started out as green slime at the bottom of a pond is an absolute joke. How educated are you anyway. A three year old has more sense than that. But, if you want to believe that you evolved from and ape, I guess I’ll go with that.”
Actually, Gary, evolution has not been proven false, although I’d be interested to hear why you feel it has. There have been many attempts, but as far as I can tell they have all fallen short upon further examination. For example, the complexity of insect wings was once widely offered as “proof” that evolution is false because obviously wings are only of use when they fully function to allow flight, otherwise they’re of no benefit, and the gradual process of evolution can’t explain how one jumps from no wing to a full complex wing. Then it was discovered that partial “half wings” actually do serve important survival functions by, for instance, allowing insects skitter across the surface of a body of water. Therfore that particular “proof” goes out the window. But those who would like to preach that evolution has been “proven wrong” usually leave out that part. The fact is evolution is widely backed by the scientific community. As for the common sense argument, I suspect we both agree that one can breed dogs to be larger or smaller or have different characteristics. Evolution is simply the same process but over much longer periods of time and with survival as the guide rather than breeders.
To answer your question to another poster in advance, I have a Ph.D. I can’t prove that in a post, of course, so you can believe me or not, I don’t care. All I ask is that you and others please google to see if any of what you think has been proven has actually been disproven.
As this relates to Huckabee, his beliefs on evolution worry me also. I want to be clear that I don’t think people who don’t believe in evolution are unintelligent in any way, Huckabee is clearly a very bright man. Moreover I can see how evolution would be difficult to square with his position as a Baptist minister. But I worry about the extent to which our leaders may tend to allow their beliefs to skew the information they obtain. We all do this to some extent, it’s human nature. But that can be an especially dangerous trait if taken to an extreme in the White House (see: original White House planning on postwar Iraq).
I’m not planning on voting for Huckabee, but I’d like to say that most of the negative comments about Huckabee on here have been really weak. I haven’t read one thing on here that would be considered an effective criticism of him. Those of you who seem to think you have convincing reasons of why you don’t like Huckabee, you’re going to have to add some pizazz to what you’re saying for it to really be taken seriously. Either try harder or find someone else to complain about. What you’re doing just isn’t cutting it. Once again, as a disclaimer, I want to say that I’m not voting for Huckabee and the main reason I’m not is because of his position on health care. Nevertheless, these cynical comments about him here are rather absurd.
Weak in what sense? He would make our country go even more broke than it is already going. Guess that’s not a big deal though. Maybe we should just start giving our money away, it’s not like it actually represents anything anymore anyway.
The fact that he wants to change OUR constitution to make it match the Bible is one BIG reason not to vote for Huck.
Nothing on FOX news makes any sense.
The crucial issue facing the country is the oil crisis. Who will stand against the criminal oil companies who are draining our wealth and funding our enemies?
There are cars that run on electric right now, and American ingenuity could improve and produce them by the millions. We already have more than enough off-peak electric capacity to replace all gasoline if the cars could plug in.
But none of these candidates dare oppose the multi-national (read: ANTI-AMERICAN) oil companies which seem to control vapid media outlets like FOX. What traitors!
Gary,
If you think Evolution failed. I’ll agree just coz you’re a moron
i have never voted for a repub in a prez election but could support a McCain/Huckabee ticket. They could keep things on ice until 2012. No to hilary no matter what. if you repubs pick a differnet canadiate you will lose me and i’ll just vote third party. PLEASE don’t choose slick romney, that’s a hillary victory for sure. that guy flips on issues more than anyone i have ever seen. no integrity what so ever. at least you can trust what mccain and huckabee say even if you don;t agree with them but romney ughhhh, the only one worse than hilary
Huckabee will make this nation right with God. He knows that the US’s problems stem mainly from our ungodliness — atheism, secularism, other religions — and will see to it that Jesus is reinstated as the rightful spiritual leader of our Great Country.
I agree that Mike Huckabee is the best candidate for this country. Whats up with McCain and Romney taking Huckabees platform on the environment as their own. Parroting what he said about being good stewards of the planet? Thats just one example out of many.
I wonder if he did not have a baptist minister background if he would be taken more seriously. The big G– word scares many folks unfortunately. JM.. Virginia.
Oh Frank, I love it when you talk like that. Huck and Chuck in 2008. God Bless America and Jesus.
Well if everyone you know Steve is voting for Mitt, let me introduce myself my name is Bud Flowers and I am not voting for Mitt even if he is nominated, I would have until I saw the way he used the typical cultic way of enforcing his campaign, He is smarmy and his history is buffed by the so called conservative press, when he ran he ran as “Massachussetts politics” its on video if you look it up!
I have noticed all the conservative radio hosts have the same dribble biased against Huckabee yep he had to spend in an emergency the money it took to fix a Clinton mistake and that was to repair what was a hideuos road system, have you driven across Arkansas in the last decade or are all the folks in your “church” warning you not to.
Now many of the folks I know are voting for Huckabee mostly because where I live these people vote liberal……kinda like Massachussetts!
Lets correct that to not voting for Huckabee because they vote liberal…..sorry
Rob you can’t get more mystic than something came from nothing, the only one I know can do that is God almighty what ever you believe in is your business but I don’t want you to preach it to my kids or force it down my throat as science, it is a religion sure as Mormonism or Jehova Witness but I don’t have enough faith to be an Atheist.
I was undecided before the debate tonight, Huckabee has become my choice ! This guy is quick on his feet, smart, witty and he has some novel ideas. We need new ideas in the white house. The other canidates just said the same old washington crap we have heard for years. Huckabee is amazing, he has my vote next week!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with you Herb^ Mike Huckabee also has more proven executive experience that any other candidate running, democrat or republican. I am going with Huck because of his 10 1/2 years as governor of arkansas, Mike Huckabee has a good resume of a solid performance as governor.
did some reading, and it seems people who believe evolution is a lie also believe global warming is a lie.
i will not be voting for huckabee. he’s nuts.
Chuck needs to stick to pugilism and get out of politics.
Frankly, I think the stupidest remarks come out of the mouth of Ron Paul!
How UN Presidential can you get?
His “Gates to hell” comment is pretty much saying our god is better than theres this guy is a joke he steals his ideas from Paul but hey if he uses them he has my vote.
I really like Huckabees good’ol boy attitude. MAYBE he did good for Arkansas. I guess the fed gov’t forced him to screw up the school system. As a retired teamster he alienated me when he crossed the picket line to be on Leno’s show. I don’t know who I’ll vote for now.
Ok, people, if you want the Politics as usual, vote for Romney! If you want CHANGE - VOTE FOR HUCKABEE!!! He stands on the TRUTH!!!
I would love to see a McCain/Huckabee ticket with the Fair Tax as one of their goals. They would be a powerful force to go against Clinton.
“They are the correct positions, because they come right from the book called the Bible.”
Listen to yourself, this is no different from those islamic fundamentalists that you all complain about so much.
“How UN Presidential can you get?”
Laughing at the other candidates during the debate.
When I first heard Mike Huckabee, I thought “Wow, he sounds great, I agree with a lot of what he says.” I thought maybe I should change my intended vote for him. I like candidates who are not ashamed of their Faith, and are willing to take on the persecution of the leftaliban media for it. That is the real Reason the left Hate George Bush so much. Unlike all other recent Presidents when he says he prays, they know He means it. So Mike won some sympathy from me there and with his avowed support of the Fair Tax.
Then I started listening to more of what he says and reading up on his record. Mike Huckabee is just a smooth-talker. Sure, he knows how to talk his way in or out of things, but I think thats all he does, like another Governor of Arkansas who went to the Whitehouse. I think Arkansas must really like smooth-talkers.
Whenever, you have a minister of any faith, He or she is either a shepard or a charleton. Shepards try to feed the flock. Charletons feed their pocketbooks and their egoes. Do you know how Charleton’s do it? Its really simple. Its the same way self-serving politicians do it. Tell people exactly what they want to hear. Tell them what they want to hear, and they will give you money and praise. Its called flattery. Its not as blatent as what most think of as flattery, but its the same thing. All it takes is skill with talking to people.
Thats Mike Huckabee.
I am not surprised he has so many blind followers. Flatterers always have blind followers. Their followers want to believe what their being told, so they close their eyes to all the counterevidence. Look and Slick Willy and Hitlary. Hillary is not nearly as smooth, but she gives 4 different answers to 1 question at the same time. She wants everyone to hear what they want to hear. AND SO MANY DO! Mike Huckabee is much smoother than Hillary, but he sticks to the group he’s been with his entire career. Evangelical Christians.
I even agree with some of his foreign Policy choices. We need to stay in Iraq. The war on Terror is incredibly important for our time and our Future. It is a real WAR. How so many can pretend it isn’t is startling. However, Huckabee’s responce to the Death of Bhutto in Pakistan, show exactly how terrible his heavy-handed foreign relations would be. He undermined the Pakistani government in a time when it was unstable. Pakistan is our ally in the War on Terror. If they lost stability the new regime to rise in Pakistan would be much more sympathetic to Terrorists than to us. Oh, and Pakistan has Nuclear weapons! Lets push a Nuclear ally into more friendly terms with terrorists!, thats a great Idea!… or not. Basically, Mike Huckabee responded the same way, if not quite as horribly, as Hillary Clinton!
Huckabee would be a terrible President. He would be Worse than Ron Paul for Foreign relations.
If that doesn’t hit the nail in the head, there is one bigger reason I wouldn’t want Huckabee.
Going into the Iowa Caucus, Huckabee dropped a line in an interview that got some attention.
After saying he didn’t really know much about Mormons, he says “Don’t they believe Jesus and Satan were brothers?”
On the surface this is just a bizarre line dropped when the interview was about the leave the topic, but I’m a Mormon and I’ve grown up with religious persecution in a small town. Religious persecution from other “Christians.”
That phrase is a code. It is a common accusation in Anti-Mormon Literature. (Isn’t it bizarre that there is such a huge industry in Anti-mormon liturature?) That code told all Christians who are bigoted against Mormons “I’m your man.” I wouldn’t support anyone who will campaign off Bigotry. Against, Black, Asian, Mexican, Jew, Mormon, Muslim, Atheist, or anything else.
The more I’ve studied Mike Huckabee’s Campaign the more this seems central to it. I don’t think he would have a campaign at all if Mitt Romney were not running. He must know he has no chance at the Whitehouse. His surge is localized and short-lived. I think he’s just trying to keep Romney out of the General Election.
Again he is acting like the Clintons! Same strategy! Same Playbook! Clinton’s are trying to paint Barack Obama’s campaign as racist. If they can do that, Obama’s support among non-black voters will evaporate and he will lose. There are not enough blacks to get him elected.
Mike Huckabee is more like the Clinton’s than anyone else in this Race.
I don’t plan on voting for Huckabee, but some of these comments paint Huckabee as some kind of religious nutjob, and there is very little proof of such a thing. He sometimes tells what his personal beliefs are, but is clear that his personal beliefs will not effect how he runs the government. I swear that some of you never read anything other than websites full of hyperbole and outright falsehoods. The man has specifically said that government should not interfere with people’s personal lives. Here is an exact quote from the man himself. “But Huckabee also said it was OK to say a person’s sexual preference was nobody’s business, “even though it’s not consistent with the Biblical norm of male and female. In 2006, when the Arkansas Supreme Court rejected a ban on gay foster parents that had been put in by a state board, Huckabee said through a spokeswoman: “I’m very disappointed that the court seems more interested in what’s good for gay couples than what’s good for children needing foster care.”"
Some of you should talk a little less and read and listen a little more.
Who is Chuck “I have a face lift with permanent smile” Norris saying someone is OLD?
He should look in the mirror. This smacks of age discrimination.
Norris is a washed up grade B actor who does infomercials to make a living these days.
He picked me up hitchhiking in VA when I was a teen and wanted to break bad on two blacks who were also hitchhiking when I told him that myself and they had a disagreement. I defused the situation by saying I was sure he could do it but he didn’t live here and I would have to live with his actions. In his defense, it wasn’t that they were black that he wanted to attack them. Besides it was in front of the county courthouse which being an out-of-towner he had no clue.
My opinion of this person is that he lacks creditability to making thee types of statements and you folks in the press really need to do your job and dig up some real news rather than relying on and re-publishing old news.
I typically vote democratic but will vote for McCain over all others should he make it past the Military Industrial Complex and Global Economic power brokers and be nominated.
Its like these FLIP FLOP Candidates to change their SPIN Words to Suit any situation,
The only one that SPEAKS Straight is McCain. We need someone that has his experience and he dose not need to show his Character, this we have seen for many decades.
I’m voting McCain or no one in the general elections.
I just want to clarify something that I’ve seen a lot of chat about. Some people seemed to be worried about Huckabee because he’s going to change the Constitution to fit the Bible. What he said was that it is easier to change the Constitution than to change the Living Word of God.
The Constitution is a secular document that was created by very intelligent and inspired minds. It has been changed by ammendments many times in the relatively short course of our history. The right to free speech, the right to bear arms, the right for black people and women to vote, the right to prohibit the drinking of alcohol and then the right to sell and drink alcohol, to mention but a few, have all been rights ammended to the original document. To change the Constitution requires a majority of the votes in each state and a majority of states to ratify any change. That is a very involved process that no one person could do easily.
What I think Huckabee is saying is that it is easier to ammend the Constitution (a very difficult process) to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman than to change the definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman in the Bible. It is easier to add an ammendment to the Constitution that would protect the rights of a person in the womb than to change the understanding of life beginning in the womb that is in the Bible. Those definitions in the Bible haven’t changed with the popular trends of thinking of any particular time and place. People’s behavior or beliefs may not align with those definitions, but those definitions have stayed pretty unchanging for thousands of years. The Constitution, on the other hand, has changed and can change again. The provisions for changing it are provided for in the document itself. Thank you Founding Fathers. Peace.
If you think evolution is not proven, then you should not use most of todays medicines because most of the testing is done on rats and other mammals , which in turn is based on evolution principles.
Straight-shooting McCain is gonna chase Osama bin Laden to the “gates of hell.” Nothing like holy war talk from the President of the USA.
Huckabee’s such a nice guy. Really? He was set up to basically enter the race and take votes away from Romney, the Mormon, because some folks are too bigoted to see past their noses. A Vanderbilt study showed that most people calling Romney a flip-flopper are also the same folks who say they will not vote for him because he is Mormon. Strange coincidence. Back to Huckabee…he wants to do away with the IRS and tax goods and services as much as 23%. How is this “change” even possible? It doesn’t even make sense…you’ll still need some organization at the government level to collect a 23% tax on goods and services. How is taking a bite out of the pocket book of the working middle class going to help. I don’t think he know much about basic economics. What foreign policy experience has Huckabee had? And all you folks keep saying on this board is that he’s such a nice guy. People think. Pretend you are interviewing the candidate for the job of President of the United States. You don’t select potential employees for hire because they were nice in the interview…you pick someone who has skill and can get the job done. Seriously look at Mitt Romney…he’s impressive. He’s turned several major organizations around. He’s your conservative to vote for.
To Doug K-
While oil is definitely a major concern we should all be looking to remedy, the assertion that we could all have plug in cars tomorrow is absurd. First they don’t have along enough distance between charges to be effective for most Americans right now, and the overall cost is still out of reach for a lot of drivers in this country. You may buy a new car every 3 years but most Americans buy their cars on the used lot, where you will not find an electric car right now. The most important issue with electric cars right now is the need for cleaner electricity. If we use our grid to fuel our vehicles then there would be rolling brownouts on a regular basis, especially in the summer. So are we to not drive from May to August? We already are in need of a lot more electricity in the coming years and asking everyone to fuel their cars from the outlet at home will certainly not help. Also a majority of our electricity is generated by the burning of natural gas, which last time I looked is a non renewable just like oil. So although you seem to think the solution is so simple it really is not. I wish people in this country would stop listening to one show of Dateline or watching one documentary and thinking they have it all figured out. None of the many problems this country faces are simple. That’s why we should be so cautious of anyone running for any office that tries to tell us they are.
And to Frank who said:
“Huckabee will make this nation right with God. He knows that the US’s problems stem mainly from our ungodliness — atheism, secularism, other religions — and will see to it that Jesus is reinstated as the rightful spiritual leader of our Great Country.”
That is exactly the kind of talk that terrifies the majority of this country, religious or not. What you describe is exactly what we are fighting in the Middle East. I know you won’t listen Frank because people like you never do, but I hope someone out there listens and at least is enlightened to think about this. The Muslim world is growing exponentially. As a religion it is the fastest growing and Christianity is on the decline. This matters to you Frank, because when you fail to separate church and state you fail to separate all churches and state. If Huckabee or anyone else can force Christianity on the country then it only stands to reason another president down the road can do it with Islam, Buddhism, Judaism or anything else they want. When your kids go to school frank how would you feel if the Koran was required reading before lunch? That’s how everyone else feels about your religion telling us how to live in our country. Our founding fathers knew this and that is why even though they were Christian they did not require any part of their faith to be incorporated in our constitution. They based our laws on the Ten Commandments, but is that really so shocking? I would wager the average person would not argue that, Christian or not, “Thou shalt not Kill” is a pretty good idea. To close, Frank and everyone like him: Stop forcing your God and religion on the rest of the world. You’ve been doing it for hundreds of years and it has only cause death, despair and injury to millions of men, women, and children. Pretty good history for a loving people huh? And Frank since you like Huckabee you probably love his idea that Israel should be allowed the property they were given by your God, right? Well I’m glad you feel that way about divine pre destination, because I worship a god named Joe and he ordained that I should build a house on your land. So if you could move by Friday, I will have the bulldozers there to tear down you house. If it works in one setting it must work in another.
From Conservative Vioce:
“After the South Carolina primary and the subsequent withdrawal of Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter’s presidential bids, the Republican field has narrowed considerably. Barring a Giuliani victory in Florida, the nominee will almost certainly be Romney, McCain, or Huckabee. As none of the remaining candidates can lay full claim to the conservative mantle, how do conservative voters select from among these three without splitting the party and dividing the base?
In the past, the various factions that compose the GOP made common cause based on a set of principles; a muscular foreign policy, free market economics, and promoting a culture that values life. After spending decades in the political wilderness, Republicans chose Ronald Reagan to turn these principles into policy. The order of events was no accident; the man (Reagan) met the moment (the Cold War and the supply-side boom) once Republicans were united in purpose.
In 2008, party unification (and subsequently, electoral victory) hinges on one thing: internalizing the lessons of the past. It is for that reason that conservatives and Republicans must approach the primaries from a different angle. Rather than viewing a choice between the current candidates as a series of trade-offs (Huckabee the social conservative vs. Romney the economic conservative), we should look at the principles beneath the positions. In that light, the current choice is between two conservatives (Romney and Huckabee) and a moderate who leans right on foreign policy (McCain).
In order for the GOP to usher in four new years of conservative governance, its voters must have one priority: to pick the candidate who 1) best embodies conservative principles and 2) is able to put those principles into practice so that they fully address the needs of the nation and its citizens.
For this reason, Mike Huckabee deserves a second look by primary voters who have written him off as “the social conservative candidate” or “an economic populist.” While he has drawn heat from a number of prominent conservatives for his attacks on the Club for Growth and the fact that he raised taxes while governor of Arkansas, there is more to Huckabee than meets the eye. While it is true that he raised taxes five times as governor, he also lowered them ninety-four times.
Additionally, polls indicate that the middle class is trending Democratic—largely over economic issues. While tax cuts are excellent for stimulating economic growth, they do nothing for job security. Huckabee’s overtures to Americans concerned about their jobs have not abandoned the principles of free-market economics; they still emphasize empowering individuals over expansion of government power. Rather, they are an attempt to answer the needs of the voters without resorting to the socialism-lite offered by the Democrats.
The fact is that America in 2008 faces different problems than in 1980, and while principles should not change, solutions must change where necessary to effectively meet America’s needs.
An avowed supporter of the pro-life movement and traditional marriage, Huckabee also offers a fresh perspective on the culture of life. By speaking on the genocide in Darfur and the slaughter of the unborn in America in the same breath, he has effectively linked America’s responsibility to the unborn and its responsibility to champion freedom and protect the innocent abroad.
This moral clarity is vitally important.
To those in the party who would like to put the issue of abortion on the back burner in favor of economic and foreign policy issues, Huckabee’s rejoinder is, why choose? All life is sacred. At the same time, it is an eloquent rebuttal to those Americans who are suffering from Iraq-induced fatigue and prefer a “non-interventionist” foreign policy. As President Bush noted, the terrorists began this conflict, but we’ll decide how and when to finish it.
Though the slate of Republican candidates is smaller than ever, conservatives need not despair. There is more than one candidate remaining whose platform is rooted in conservative principles. If, however, conservatives are looking something more—if they are looking for a candidate who can utilize these principles to craft new policies to meet our current challenges, they could not do better than to consider Mike Huckabee. The man from Hope is selling his own brand of optimism to voters—which makes him Reaganesque in more ways than one.”
You can learn the most about a person by observing who hates them.
Reading all these comments are absolutely laughable. People preaching that this country should follow Christianity, Gary’s awful post, and all these ignorant followers are just ignoring the facts. Kevin clearly listed it out for everyone: He spends way too much money and frees felons, then goes on to lie about it. How bad can you get? You want that running your country? … Oh but wait he’s a nice guy and thinks quickly on his feet. You people are idiots.
As for religion, I’m sick of hearing about it when it comes to politics. It’s a apparent that many people are strong believers of Christianity in this country, but it’s really pathetic to preach it to others why yours is the best and should govern this country. Why should your religion be followed by the country? because you say so or feel so strongly about it? Bleh. I personally think people waste their time tied up in religion … live your life and enjoy it, love your friends and family, and make others happy. I feel that when you die it’s just lights out. Like going to sleep and not being able to remember your dream, but just never waking up; Or going under anesthesia … It’s just straight blackout. Why spend your whole life believing in something that could possibly be made up? One thing that’s definite is that we’re here now, so invest your time in your family, friends and people less fortunate and you’ll live an excellent life, along with enjoying it.
It’s your choice to believe in what you want and I have absolutely nothing against that, that’s what makes this country so great. People have the freedom to believe in whatever the choose and not be punished for it. I just find it hilarious that so many people preach their religion and beliefs like they’re right. Huckabee’s track record is blatantly flawed and making this a Christian country would be an absolute disaster. Stop being so ignorant and read the facts
You are all rediculous. Especially the person who evidently wants God to bless Jesus…if you are going to be a christian, you should at least understand what that means.
That aside, Huck cannot be trusted to be president without forcing some portion of his religion on the american people. For that reason, I and most republicans that I know are going out for Ron Paul. We need to return to an america with real conservative values. Conservatism has nothing to do with what religion you are or for that matter anything other than respect for the constitution, the right of states to govern themselves and the right of free enterprise. Being conservative does not mean you are opposed to change, it just means that we agree that there are procedures in place to make changes. We should not allow the president to use his seat as a pulpit from which to further the american empire, but rather a stone from which he can bring us back to a stable and ballanced republic. VOTE RON PAUL! The only real conservative of the bunch. He won louisiana and contrary to the spin Nevada by most accounts. I know that some Romney supporter will say that’s a lie, but look at the delagate counts, Ron Paul won the delegate majority. In this sutuation, the popular vote has no bearing on who gets the most deligates as it is done by precinct. Both Fox and CNN reported this (to my surprise) although they haven’t repeated it since…
Good luck to all the candidates, this is going to be a tough race. Remember, it’s our job to voice our opinions and concerns at all times in america, especially when choosing the leader of our great nation.
To Frank Burns
“Huckabee will make this nation right with God. He knows that the US’s problems stem mainly from our ungodliness — atheism, secularism, other religions — and will see to it that Jesus is reinstated as the rightful spiritual leader of our Great Country.”
Are you serious? You seriously have the audacity to claim that the US’s problems stem from ungodliness? Look at the other theocracies that exist right now or have existed in the past. What do you think Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin (both atheist/partially deistic, along with a large portion of the other founding fathers) were so adamant about a strong seperation of church and state? Because they lived under the horrid oppression of theocracies, and saw what happened when diversity is destroyed. What are you proposing, that every child grow up and get indoctrinated by Christian values and hopefully if we censor the world enough that they can live an entire life without realizing it? Maybe I’ll take you on my next tour to Afghanistan, where we can sit by and see a court sentence a 16 year old to death. His crime? Having ten pages off the internet that was somewhat critical of Islam. You really think Christianity would do any better? Read Deuteronomy 13:6, in which God himself tells us to stone anyone that does not serve him. Or maybe find one of the other hundred quotes I have highlighted that propose intolerance like that. Maybe we can emulate the Spanish Inquisition (or any of the Inquisitions that went on throughout Europe), and torture those who lifted a wheelbarrow on the Sabboth, or wore cleaner clothes on a Saturday (because that shows maybe they have Jewish tendencies). Your idea is idiotic and ridiculous, and that is the most ignorant thing I have heard in quite a while. Maybe we can get rid of science as well, obviously it worked well for the Church in the Middle Ages when there was no progress at all, but they had a full monopoly on the souls of their citizens.
