McCain Cool on Tax Rebates
John McCain says he supports today’s interest rate cut by the Fed. He thinks lower interest rates and lower taxes are important in getting the economy back on track.
But McCain is cool to the idea of tax rebate checks. The Bush administration is said to be considering rebates of $800 per person as part of an economic stimulus package.
McCain has voiced doubts repeatedly at campaign events in the last week or so. Here’s a sample, from a rally last week in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
done
McCain’s economic advisor, Doug Holtz-Eakin, says it might be months before rebate checks are issued– past a timely window. But he says if the checks could be timely, well-targeted and temporary… and if no other viable option were on the table… then the Senator might endorse the idea.
McCain always insists that any economic strategy should include cutting spending. Some reporters and economists have challenged that theory because less spending takes money out of circulation.

Very interesting interview Shan Hannity had last night with Jack Kemp about McCain’s problems with the conservative base and his record on tax issues. According to Kemp now McCain says voting against tax cuts was a mistake… and he has seen the light and is now for tax cuts. McCain now says the McCain-Feingold was a mistake now he is against it. McCain was against repealing the death tax… now he’s for it. McCain wanted to increase Social Security Tax…now he’s against that. I’m waiting for McCain to change on immigration next.
Kemp emphatically stated the McCain admits he made some mistakes in judgment. Now that these issues are a problem for McCain he has changed his mind. According to Kemp that’s ok because we all make mistakes. I don’t know but are we suppose to believe he really saw the light and changed his mind or is this a flip-flop on these issues for the sake of winning the election.
Can you imagine the headlines if this was Romney!!!
I for one would never trust McCain with the highest office in the land. Romney has been the consistent voice from the GOP. Look for Romney to win in Florida.
McCain’s got problems no doubt, but wouldn’t he be more attractive if Thompson was his running mate? It might just happen, as discussed here: http://politiporn.com/2008/01/22/fred-out-chases-early-bird-special/
Dear Kevn, (January 22nd, 2008 at 10:46 pm)
That sounds very, very interesting. I went to the Hannity web site but couldn’t find a link.
Any help?
Also this quote from the above piece “McCain is cool to the idea of tax rebate checks”; should be his swan song in Florida.
Go Mitt! 08
This is coming from the same guy who said “Economics is something I don’t know much about” (Boston Globe, Dec 17 or 18th 2007). Give me a break, McAmnesty. Thank you for your Vietnam service, but you’re not qualified to talk about the economy.
When it comes to strengthening the economy, addressing our budget deficit, balancing our trade deficit, and turning around our falling dollar there is no question but that Mitt Romney is much more qualified than ANY of the other candidates….on either side.
Mitt Romney wasn’t the CEO of a highly successful private equity firm for nothing. He ran that organization because is incredibly talented when it comes to running an organization, turning around organizations, and making sound economic decisions. He is a very accomplished executive who has delivered impressive results time and time again - in business, as Governor of MA, and with the SLC Olympics.
Mitt Romney - a PROVEN LEADER with the EXPERIENCE to turn Washington around!
CIAO EVERYONE. MSN & CNN JUST READ THE SLANDEROUS QUOTE FROM FOX EMBEDS re. 1. Obama is a Mulim 2, when he was sworn into office he DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Koran. 3, Obama refuses to salute the flag , et. al
Great God Almighty, ALL LIES. ALL LIES. ALL LIES. AS THE ANCHORMAN SAID, “IT DOES PROVE ONE THING, HOW LOW PEOPLE CAN STOOP. WHOMEVER WROTE THE TRASH IS WORSE THAN ANY CHARGE THEY WROTE.
HERE’S HOPING BRILLIANT HACKERS CAN TRACK DOWN THE DESPICABLE TWEEBS & THEY CAN BE TRIED FOR SLANDER. IT FOR SURE WAS NOT “SATIRE” OR “PARADY.”
HELLO. THE END DOES NOT JUSTIFY THE MEANS. PERHAPS YOU BELONG WITH THE LIKES OF LENIN, STALIN, JIM JONES . IT REALLY IS–THE WAY YOU PLAY THE GAME THAT TELLS THE WARRIOR HEROES IN THIS WORLD.
YAHOO. IT IS NOT NOT NOT TRUE; ALL WRITTEN BY SOME PITIFUL, TWISTED.
EVER ONWARD AND UPWARD ! EMPOWER AMERICA!
McCain is a one issue wonder of a candidate. The best thing that could happen for his campaign is for a war to start somewhere so his experience and training would be relevant in the White House.
If you’ll be objective enough to notice, everytime McCain speaks he relates every issue back to military and war. He is going to save tax payers money buy rooting out corruption in militray spending and defense contracts. He is going to keep America safe by, “Chasing Bin Laden to the gates of hell!”, etc…
I don’t know about anyone else, but I see the world from a much broader perspective than military and war. I want the next president to be more than a war hawk and understand more about how government runs than just the military.
The issues we face today require innovative thinking and innovative solutions… not the same old people, with the same old ideas, doing the same old thing.
We live in a republic. Our voice can be heard through who we elect to represent us in government. If we want things to change… then we have to change the people who are making the decisions in Washington.
Vote for Mitt Romney. A person who has spent his life innovating and problem solving. A person who has not been tied into the same old Washington politics. A person who has demonstrated the backbone to stand up to a liberal legislature.
We have a choice. We can make our choice known with our vote.
McAmnesty and lower taxes? In the words of Willoiam Jefferson Bly Clinton :Give me a break …”
Mitt’s the Man!
Romney in 08 and Beyond!
McCain’s in it for McCain - not for America. Same goes for the Dems’ candidates.
Friends of Fred join Mitt now!
If Romney is so much more qualified to strengthen the economy, then why was his plan for all those workers in Michigan just a reworded version of McCain’s?
McCain clearly said that those jobs that got shipped off to China aren’t going to come back, so people should be getting training for new jobs.
Meanwhile, Romney is going on about ‘new research jobs’ etc. He was telling those people to go get new jobs! And excuse me, but don’t you usually need some kind of training to get a job at a power plant? Even if it is solar power. All Romney did was put a nice political spin on things so people will think he’s got some magic wand to wave.
Vote for McCain in ‘08.
He’ll tell you where he stands, without the magic wand.
It doesn’t matter who McCain would choose to be VP. I love Fred Thompson but even a McCain/THompson ticket wouldn’t do it for me.
McCain’s record is no different than the democrat’s. I would rather have a democrat president take credit for ruining the economy and have a fresh start in four years.
McCain can’t be trusted on any level. Not on fiscal issues, social issues, Illigal immigration issues, foreign affairs issues, nor Supreme Court nominations.
“No country for old men”… McAmnesty should mount his army of skeletons and ride off to retirement at “Shady Pines” adult community. Running a little low on cash John? lookin for a bailout? fundraisers in new york with your old cronnies, Kennedy, Kerry and other empty suits wont save you. Ignore the conservative base and your consituents at your own peril.
VOTE MITT ROMNEY 2008!
Will the REAL FLIP-FLOP king step forward…. yes you Sen. McCain!
