Huckabee and Bill Clinton Attend Same King Day Service

Atlanta,GA-

Former governor Mike Huckabee was delayed in getting to the Martin Luther King service at Ebenezer Baptist Church, because former president Bill Clinton’s airplane was landing nearby. We had to wait on our charter plane until Clinton was escorted safely away.

Once at the church, where Rev. Martin Luther King Jr was co-pastor with his father( 1960-1968) Huckabee sat in the front pew next to Alveda King, niece of King, and the person who had personally invited Huckabee to the service. Clinton came in a several minutes later and sat in the same front pew. However, neither exchanged greetings, or handshakes that I saw. Huckabee staffers say they will probably greet each other after the service.

The two former Arkansas governors, and Hope, AR natives, are bookended in that front pew, one on each of the far side, respectively, and separated by 5 or 6 people, including members of the King family, in between.

 ***UPDATE***

President Clinton just spoke to the Church. He acknowledged a litany of people, before beginning his remarks on MLK, including his “fellow Arkansan, and a competitor for the presidential nomination. Governor Huckabee welcome.”

” We worked together for several years on something that concerns everybody in this church: trying to turn the tide on childhood obesity, and childhood diabetes,”Clinton said.”A  good man.”But he also said that they didn’t agree much on anything.

Pander away!

Huck–for running a “positive” campaign you sure have attacked a lot of dfferen people–using Chuck Norris to attack John McCain’s age…others to attack Brownback’s Catholicism…on and on…Huck has run the dirtiest campaign–all while smiling and claiming to be a god-like minister.

Baloney!

Huck is a midnight televangelist who takes money from the widow to buy himself new cars.

Huck is not qualified to run the executive branch. He has never started a business, does not understand the dollar and capital markets, and his only answer in Arkansas was to raise taxes and increase the size of government.

We need a leader who understands why jobs come and go, how government restrictions hurt our competition and how to look out into the future to avoid pitfalls.

Huckabee is not presidential.

Obama–? He has zero experience. None. He has never run a business, never hired anyone, never competed in the workplace or been under the yoke of government–and yet he wants to tax businesses? Take away profit? Where do salaries and re-investment come from, my inexperienced friend? profits.
I realize that Obama thinks that government gives us everything, because that is where he has gotten everything his whole life, but it is not the source of ideas, innovation or jobs. Government kills these things.

Obama is not presidential.

Hillary? 35 years experience? Huh? Where? What company have you started? Who have you hired? What experience? Following your sex-addicted husband around the world doing damage control as he had his way with another intern? Please. Are you responsible for Waco, TX? Are you responsible for Elian Gonzalez? Are you responsible for the Enron mess? If you are taking credit for the dot.com bubble and false economic rise, you must also take responsibility for the many failings of your husband’s administration.

Hillary is no presidential.

We need a president who has succeeded in business, in the government sector and in other areas, as well. Only one candidate has worked under the pressures and laws of the federal gov. to make jobs, save businesses and turn around enterprises–Mitt Romney.

Mitt Romney is presidential. He will be an excellent chief executive of the executive branch.

Marie, Huck is not pandering, he was endorsed by th head of the Coalition of African-American Pastors and he is the only candidte who actually attended that service in person.

Huck isn’t using Chuck Norris to attack McCain, that is simply Norris voicing his opinion- and I think Chuck needs to be quiet.

Huck isn’t qualified to run the executive branch? HELLO! He was a GOVERNER for 10 1/2 YEARS!

You may think Romney is ‘presidential’, and fine, you can think that. If you are going to attack Huck, then atleast make sure your attacks make sense.

Marie is right…….

Huck hasn’t won the Chritian Conservative since Iowa, in fact Romney did just that in both NV and NH. Writing is on the wall - Huckabee’s time in the spotlight is long gone. Huckabee/McCain without their aides don’t have a handle on the economy and neither have the level of experience Romney has when it comes to the tough decisions that are going to be needed.

As a Conservative Christian my vote is for Romney. Some of us have made the decision not to follow Huckabee off the cliff.

You say huckabee is endorsed by coalition of the African American pators right? Go figure!! Huckabee use to be a pastor! Huck has had the Great majority of his help from evangelicals. since Iowa he glow is wearing off.

Comment by Arky

Chuck is hinting at Huck’s ambition to be McCain’s VP.
Huckabee is a gifted speaker and a likeable person.
Read interesting articles about him in: Plutarch’s Weblog and Judicial Watch Announces List.
Go Mike!

Thompson is silently being thrown under John McCain’s bus now that SC is over. Go figure??? Fred stayed in to help McCain win SC. Now McCain says Fred may not be his Veep. John needs the conservative credentials. Mitt is starting to appeal to me …maybe Mitt will get Thompson’s endorsement after FL.

Huckabee absolutely has to court the Evangelicals. It’s the only way he can win.

Luckily for him, Evangelicals are used to false promises and exaggerated claims–their religious convictions have conditioned them for that. Any man who speaks earnestly (or at least in an earnest tone) and hates all the right people–gays, atheists, Muslims–is bound to garner their support.

Unluckily for him, in every poll that’s been conducted, Hillary and Barack slaughter him in a general election. People outside the republican party are not going to take a serious look at him. He has no appeal to Democrat voters and no appeal to independents. The Republicans may well nominate him, but only if they’re not serious about keeping the White House.

Comment by Claudia

According to the US census, those identifying themselves as Evangelical made up .5% of US population. Those which identified themselves as Baptists made up 17.2% of US population. They did not identify themselves as Evangelicals but as Baptist. There is a difference. Because Evangelicals on television ( as Marie seems to clump Huckabee with) sometimes have views that differ from mainstream America does not mean that all southern Christians and all Baptist have the same views as these same Evangelicals. I challenge her and others to go to Huckabee’s website and see what his real views are; why there are only two conservative social views he is pushing for, namely right to human life and marriage between a man and woman, and why he is significantly polling higher than most of the republican candidates. That many people could not all be fanatical, radical evangelicals. Other candidates purport to be Christian also. Obama presents himself as a “committed Christian” and in his campaign he claims he will be a president “guided by his Christian faith” (as reported by the associated press). With only 1.4% of the US population reporting to be Mormon it seems that Romney is gathering some of the Evangelical or Christian vote. I would bet that a greater percentage of Christians voted so far for Romney in the primaries than percentage of Mormans who voted for someone other than than own religion.

Marie,

Actually you are wrong, Huckabee successfully started and ran two local Arkansas tv stations which included religous messages but also community outreach and local interest programs. He has also managed to run a campaign which overcame your candidate in Iowa using significantly less money while Romney was attacking him on his positions. Mike cut taxes over 90 times, including the first broad based tax cuts in his states history. Yes, some taxes were raised in Arkansas during his 10.5 years as governor in a state that had 80% democrat legislature, but these were used to solve significant statewide problems in the transportation and education systems, and they showed dramatic improvement during his governance (schools went from 49th to 8th in the nation and roads were ranked as most improved). The tax burden per person per year over the 10 years of his governance actually increased less than it did in Massachussets during Romneys tenure, and Mike increased jobs more than Romney did. Over Huckabees entire 10 year tenure the tax burden went up about 500 million, however, when he left there was also a 800+ million dollar surplus, which went directly back to the taxpayers as he left office to remove taxes from groceries. If this surplus is accounted for the net tax burden in Arkansas actually decreased during his tenure. I think that shows that he knows how to run an efficient campaign and and efficient government, and one that actually accomplishes something (despite a highly partisan legislature). Additionally, in regards to the endorsement of these black republican groups, Mike managed to carry more than 45% of the black vote in Arkansas, and he fought for there rights even before he was a governor, integrating churches and reaching out through community service. Mike deserves support from these minority communities because he has and will continue to work with them, unlike most of the Republican candidates.

Huckabee is the BEST candidate I’ve seen in years. How many GOP candidates can be (or have been) invited to a black church? He must be authentic and for ALL PEOPLE. I know, there are many African American Christians who are conservatives yet they have been pushed aside by many GOP elites. How about Hispanic Republicans? BW Bush reached out to them in 2004 (kudos to him). And, right now only Huckabee has reached out to them.

I don’t want a corporate CEO to run the country. He might just try to lay off more people.
I don’t want a long term senator to run the country. He has no executive experience.

Huckabee has been two full terms as a governor, plus some. His executive experience in the public sector is longer than any other candidates.

THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HATH MADE - I WILL REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT !! I can rejoice that I have an unclouded and clear vision of who our next president should be and that is former Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas. He went through the “Fire” in the Arkansas politics for over 10 yrs with a 90% Democratic opposition in the state. But as I read, a lot of these former democratic leaders now have nothing but good things to say about Mike and all of the changes he made for the better of which were highways, education just to name a few.

His honesty and integrity comes through loud and clear. What a wise man he is and great communicator. He is not responsible for what comes out of someone else’s mouth but only his own. Aren’t YOU glad that YOU don’t have to give an account of what someone else says? Whew! The pressure is OFF! As Christians we need to try a little kindness. Fine to disagree but being so hateful is SO unlike Christ. Back to “WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?”

MIKE, YOU ARE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR!! AMERICA NEEDS YOU! We do not need a flip-flopper and that you are not! You have a MULTITUDE of followers and doing so well on a few bucks.
It would be interesting to see what you could do if you had the MANY MILLIONS that Romney has. THAT law needs to be changed as we all know, it is totally UNFAIR. BUT greater is our Lord who is in YOU then HE who is in the world……………GO MIKE GO!! Also Sean - please could you just try a little harder not to let your partiality to another candidate come through? Many are complaining about the biases and are switching channels…………………JILL

Gay or atheists are people too, and he doesn’t represent either of those groups, nor could he. I’m not saying this is a bad thing. No candidate can truly represent everyone, but it would be nice, just once, to have a candidate that came close to representing my values.

New poll: U.S. more ready for black prez than female one
A new poll just out from CNN/Opinion Research tied to Martin Luther King Day today finds blacks and whites optimistic and pretty much in agreement — 84% whites, 78% blacks — that a lot or moderate progress has been made toward the civil rights leader’s dream of equality in American society.

But hidden near the bottom of the survey of nearly 1,400 adult Americans Jan. 14-17 is some disturbing news for Sen. Hillary Clinton heading into tonight’s Democratic debate in South Carolina and the party’s primary there Saturday. …

Thaank you for this story and wonderful video. It reminded me of special services in churches in my hometown (we don’t have past presidents).

Bill Clinton’s words were an understatement. What a contrast! Two men from the same hometown, having governed from the executive office of the same state, now sitting in the same pew, truly couldn’t be more different in their plans and hopes for America. This is reflected in the way each governed the state of Arkansas, and by the way in which each has lived his life. We in mainstream America see you, Mike Huckabee, and appreciate your conservative ideals and values. Keep up the good fight!

Huckabee? Is he still running? I thought he went bankrupt because of lack of supporters and only a one hit wonder record to his name. I guess if Ron Paul and Guiliani is still on the ballot why not Huckabee. It seems like Huckabee has realized this and is trying to beg McCain for a job.

In the traditions of David Crockett, Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt we finally have a candidate in Mike Huckabee, who speaks truth with a commonsense wisdom. He comes across, to people of honor and integrity, as the “Real Deal”! The problem is He is trying to communicate with people who don’t really know who they are and who are terribly uncomfortable in”their own skin”. They depend on “talking points” gleaned from their respective candidates as if they were the word of God. These political lemmings are devoid of the ability to have independant thought processes and just go with the flow of rabid talk radio zealots in the employ of the RNC. When Mike speaks people of conscience and faith listen intently. Alas, nowadays these attributes of the american spirit are harder to find and if and when they are heard, they are quickly derided.
