Obama’s Las Vegas Revue

At a town hall event just off the Vegas strip last night, Senator Barack Obama debuted a bit of humor and a hint of sarcasm to highlight his differences with his opponents. “When I was 20 points down, everybody loved me,” he started. “Now that we’re tied, suddenly there’s all kinds of stuff going on out here.”

Referencing the debate last Tuesday, Obama told the crowd he was “laughing” when the candidates were asked to talk about their biggest weaknesses. ” I thought, you know, ’cause I’m like an ordinary person, I thought that they meant ‘Whats your biggest weakness?’” he said sarcastically. ” Obama recounted his own ‘ordinary person’ response - that he’s not a paper person. “My desk is a mess; I need somebody to help me file and stuff all the time.”

He reminded the audience his opponents’ answers to the same question: that John Edwards is “just too passionate about helping people,” and Hillary Clinton is “just too impatient to bring about change in America.” He delivered the punch line with a comedian’s panache: “If I had gone last, I would have known what the game was, and then I could have said, ‘Well, you know I like to help old ladies across the street. Sometimes they don’t want to be helped. It’s terrible.’” The crowd howled with laughter. “Folks - they don’t tell you what they mean,” he said, hammering home his humor-wrapped point that his opponents are politicians who will say anything to get elected. “Undecideds - remember now, remember what I’m saying.”

After this anecdote, Obama had the crowd on his side when he segued into a more pointed criticism about Senator Clinton. Bringing up her answer in last Tuesday’s debate during which Clinton said she was happy the 2001 bankruptcy bill she voted for never passed, Obama said incredulously, “What does that mean? No, seriously, what does that mean?” The crowd laughed - Obama grinned. “If you didn’t want to see it passed, then you could have voted against it! People don’t say what they mean,” he repeated.

The riff continued as Obama moved onto local hot-button issue, Yucca Mountain. The candidate explained that while he is against sending radioactive waste to the proposed Nevada site, Hillary Clinton is saying he is for it. A Clinton radio ad airing here in Nevada points out Obama has financial ties to some of the site’s supporters. Obama assured the voters, “Never been for it. Never said I was for it. Suddenly you’ve got the Clinton camp out there saying, ‘He’s for Yucca.’ What part of ‘I’m not for Yucca’ do you not understand?”

It wasn’t all laughs. Obama accused the Clinton camp of playing political “tricks” when talking about a recent Clinton-sponsored Social Security mailer saying Obama’s approach to fixing Social Security would amount to a trillion dollar tax increasing on hard working Americans. Obama pointed out the tax increase would apply only to the top three percent of the population and that Clinton herself had promised a voter in Iowa she’d consider that same solution. “Those kind of tricks, that kind of approach to politics is what has to stop, because what happens is then nobody believes anything. The voters don’t believe what politicians say. They get cynical,” he said as the crowd erupted into applause. “We have to change that politics.”

Senator Obama ended his show with a promise. “You won’t hear me saying one thing one day to one audience and then saying something else another day to a different audience because I think it’s politically convenient,” he said. “I will say what I mean and I will mean what I say.”

Obama’s traveling act plays in Nevada through Saturday before heading east in time for the South Carolina primary.

Many have expressed how they feel Bill shouldn’t be out there campaigning for Hillary. Well, regardless of how this campaign goes, think about this. What if later down the road in another election a famous (bi-partisan couple) is involved in a presidential campaign. Say this involves a certain First Lady of California (of the Kennedy dynasty) and her campaign to be President of the United States. Will we smile then when the Terminator tells all the snotty detractors, “I’m Back”? Think it’s just a “fairy tale”, maybe, maybe not. But Bill and Hillary are paving the way for more changes down the road.

Obama is too glib to be President. He is sarcastic about Hillary saying that she voted for the 2001 bankruptcy bill, but was glad it didn’t pass….indeed, what Hillary was saying was that, in hindsight, she was glad it didn’t pass in light of recent foreclosures. She also said, at the time she voted for it, that it was a good bill with good protections.

Obama is taking Hillary out-of-context and being sarcastic to have some fun with Hillary. He thinks it makes him look “offbeat” and “refreshing”, when it fact it makes him look immature and too glib to be President. Humor does have a place in politics, but not the way Obama uses it.

Obama is a rookie Senator who is unqualified for the Presidency. He wants Hispanics to “look at his record”. What record?! He has been a U.S. Senator for three short years, two of which has been spent running for President.

I’m not impressed with Barak Obama. He’s too inexperienced, too glib, and too immature for the Presidency.

Go Hillary in ‘08!

For Democrats, Obama is the Candidate of Confidence, Clinton the Candidate of Fear

As Democrats debate on this campaign and on the future of our party, the tone among Clinton supporters has come to differ sharply from that of Obama supporters. While Obama supporters exude confidence, excitement, and the will to win, Clinton supporters seem increasingly defensive; increasingly gripped by the fear that, in debating as we are now, we are fragmenting the party and playing into the hands of the Republicans. Clinton supporters cast Obama as a dangerous interloper who threatens to rip the Democratic Party apart, as an irresponsible dreamer, as a pied piper who is leading the children away to certain disaster. His supporters are cast as misguided idealists, as starry-eyed adolescents who need to give up their “false hopes” of something better than politics as usual and face dull, mediocre “reality.” Surely our unruly behavior is already putting the Democratic campaign at serious risk. Surely even now the Republicans must be watching and grinning as we divide so that they can conquer. “Shhhh…,” we are told by Clintonistas, “Be careful what you say…. The Republicans are licking their lips right now.”

I say if they’re licking their lips now they’ll be eating crow come November. For any Republican who might be tempted to put tongue to lip, think again: I and other Obama supporters will vote for Hillary Clinton in November if she wins the Democratic nomination, as I should expect Clinton supporters will do in kind if Obama is the nominee, because we intend to win. The United States and the world can’t stand another four-to-eight years of Republican insanity. Hillary Clinton is not my first choice among Democrats, but she beats any Republican by far. In the meantime, let the debate continue: Debate is, after all, the essence of that clever little Greek idea for which our party is named. We have the advantage; we can afford a healthy debate. With a field of candidates such as ours compared to the assortment of flawed specimens running for the Republican nomination, and with our enthusiasm compared to the mood of bitterness and gloom among Republicans, I’d say it is we Democrats who should be licking our lips.

Poor Dirk,
What part of Hillary’s sorry response you don’t understand? I voted for the bill, but glad it didn’t pass?
That’s hilariously ridiculous! You want that to be your President?
She wept her way to a slim margin of victory the last time around. Any more crying on the way?
Is she going to lie and cry her to the nomination? You, Clintonites, are flat-out dysfunctional to want them back in the White House. Are you planning on renting the Lincoln bedroom for a couple of nights?

Mark, I’m a Clinton supporter who had just about given up on being able to ever vote for Obama. I consider his supporters’ attacks on Hillary to be same-old-same-old, while he’s promising to LEAD us ALL to something BETTER. Your post gave me HOPE again, and because of YOU, I will support Obama if he wins the nomination.

However, I’d like to say that the interpretation of anything I’ve seen said about Obama by Clinton supporters doesn’t come close to your over-the-top characterization:

“Clinton supporters cast Obama as a dangerous interloper who threatens to rip the Democratic Party apart, as an irresponsible dreamer, as a pied piper who is leading the children away to certain disaster. His supporters are cast as misguided idealists, as starry-eyed adolescents who need to give up their “false hopes” of something better than politics as usual and face dull, mediocre “reality.” ”

Sorry, Mark, that’s baloney.
I worked for Howard Dean. The campaign’s motto was “Hope, not fear.” Some us are old enough to have gone down the “hope” path a zillion times before.

I have hope in America.

But if Obama can’t deliver the Democratic nomination (like Dr. Dean couldn’t) it doesn’t help.
It’s OBAMA supporters who need to prove — as YOU so wonderfully did — that Obama supporters can stop being Clinton Haters when this is all done, no matter who wins the Democratic nomination. So, thank you for giving me HOPE. :-)
Peace!

Am not an american but i did like to point some facts out . 1979-1987 it was Regan/Bush snr ,1988-1991 Bush snr ,then 1992- 1998 it was The clintons/ al gore, 1998-2008 Bush( the american blunder) / chenny. For 28 years its been about one family and one class of americans, another clinton president would take it to 32 years of family dictatorship of a political trend in a democratic country,i thinks is a shame.
If Obama becomes the president he in his naivity will be fair to all and he will make a sound judgement, not anly that it will be a clear message that a common man with a vission could lead the country without coming from the american political dynasty. AMERICA BELONGS TO ALL AMERICANS. It is time for a CHANGE.

Obama has held elected office longer than Hillary, so where is all this experience of hers coming from? As first lady? Yeah, I don’t think so.

Besides that, she was against the civil rights act back in ‘63 when she was a hardcore supporter for Barry Goldwater.

She’s a liar and the only reason she has her career is through her marriage… Horray Feminism.

She should be ashamed, as should everyone who supports her.

But she began attacking him first! Matter of fact she was like a mother bear and the white house her cub. She has attacked him at every opportunity. First it was said that he was to nice because he laid down and took the attacks, no he is mean because he will not stand it any longer. Give me a break! Your mind is already set to choose the she-bear and nothing he (Obama) can do will make you happy unless you have him down at your feminist knees. They (Bush/Clintons)are another dynasty. We might as well give up our rights and have crowns made.

This “experience” thing is such garbage. Obama’s been an elected official for years more than Hillary Clinton — unless we’re meant to give her partial credit for her years as First Lady, in which case you have to lump the bad bits of Bill Clinton in with the good. And I’m not up for another 4 years of the Bill Clinton Sideshow in the White house.

I’m voting Barack because he’s the most straightforward candidate, who espouses my views and has minimal attachments to the red state/blue state awfulness that the Clintons are neck-deep in. Despite being a woman myself, I find it pretty insulting that I’m “supposed” to vote for Clinton out of some sort of gender loyalty. I was raised in a post-feminist age, and the drawback of being a beneficiary of that movement is that while I’m appreciative for it, I don’t feel I have to somehow pay back the original feminists by voting for someone who I find divisive and dishonest and, to be frank, flatly politically dangerous. She’s a woman, so what. There will be other women candidates — this one’s not the one I want.

Barack Obama as U.S. President will benefit the entire world. Love the guy!! He’s funny, brilliant and is a good, honest man. And most important, A LEADER~ A rarity anywhere.

I am a very conservative guy. I still love George W. even though a lot of people dislike him now. I have a college education, and I am very career minded. I believe in conservative fiscal policy, and on down the road of conservative views. However, I love Obama. I like that he really is an average American. His answer to the question of “what is your greatest weakness,” is a reply that if each average American would have heard that question they would have had a simular response. I bet Hillary thought it was a gaffe on Obama’s part for being too honest. I am switching political party’s this election to vote for a guy that not only has the average American’s interests at heart, but a guy that could just as easily be the loveable business owner in your local downtown shopping center.

Jan, I agree with you. I am an enthusiastic Hillary supporter (I’ve waited 8 years for this moment) but you’re right. I will also support Obama if he gets the nomination because another 4 years with the Republicans is unthinkable. I also hope that Hillary (if she wins the nomination) wil choose Obama as her vice president. What a team!!! Go Hillary. And for all of you that still can’t figure out how to use internet…all you do is type in the candidate’s name and several sites Waikipi..sp.?) will finally inform you of Senator Clinton’s qualifications and marvelous history. Barack Obama is a member of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ. Its minister, and Obama’s spiritual adviser, Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. In 1982, the church launched Trumpet Newsmagazine, with Wright’s daughters now serving as publisher and executive editor. Every year, the magazine makes awards in various categories. Last year, it gave the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award to a man it said “truly epitomized greatness.” That man is Louis Farrakhan.

Maybe for Wright and some others, Farrakhan “epitomized greatness.” For most Americans, Farrakhan epitomizes racism, particularly in the form of anti-Semitism. Over the years, he has compiled an awesome record of offensive statements, even denigrating the Holocaust by falsely attributing it to Jewish cooperation with Hitler — “They helped him get the Third Reich on the road.” His history is a rancid stew of lies.

describing the September 11 attacks as a “wake-up call” to America for ignoring the concerns of “people of colour”, and for claiming that Americans “believe in white supremacy and black inferiority . . . more than we believe in God”.
., Obama offers white voters a chance to free themselves from white guilt!

unbelievable and he is running on uniting all people

Comment by Mike

Typically I choose to not engage in internet discourse about the respective candidates. I never show the point in engaging in firvolous name calling and finger pointing. However, it is very difficult for me to ignore comments relative to what Jack has expressed.

I am sure if I looked at every person these candidates have ever associated with or who their associates have associated with, I could find a long line of racists, cheats, liars, criminals, lobbiests and every other non appealing persona you could muster up. I am sure most Americans at some point considered someone who had some pretty poor ideals a friend or an associate.

I do not think it is prudent for voters to find every black mark on a third parties associates record and somehow construe those inadequecies by those backers to be representitive of the integrity of the candidate.

The fact of the matter is the most honest and articulate politician I have seen in my lifetime is Barack Obama, and before you Clinton or Republican backers stop reading, here me out on this. I consider myself to be a moderate republican. I want limited government and little taxation, however, I find Obama appealing because I feel he does represent the majority of Americans. My parents don’t own an oil company, I didn’t go to Yale and receive C minus marks nor did I have every opportunity at my finger tips. Obama does not have that background as well, and neither do the majority of Americans. Here is an individual who went to Occidential in LA before improving his grades enough to transfer to Columbia and then receiving his Juris Doctrine from arguably the most prestigious college in the world. A true embodiment of the American Dream and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps so to speak.

Quite frankly, I am tired of living in an oligarchy where the same people from the same upper class families are given the keys to our REPRESENTATIVE goverment and asked to drive. We (the majority of Americans) have watched the very things that provide us with the opportunity to accomplish the American Dream (education, medical, environmental) slip through our fingers slowly but surely as the rich continue to get richer due to legislation that benefits the upper echelon of the American taxpayer. I want my country back, and so should you.

I want inspired leadership, I hope for optimism and more than anything I don’t want another Clinton in office. Not because I don’t appreciate her candidacy, but because 28 years of two families controlling the most powerful office in the world makes me extremely skeptical. If I wanted tyranny, I would move to Saudi Arabi….

Take our country back!

Comment by A.G. Bradford

Heres the NPR article (the part about the magazine and comments)

I agree with Mike too…

I personally think that Obama - being raised by his mom and her family (white) in Kansas, all his life, he’s not bound to take sides with a person that wants to bash white americans in any way. Its obvious he’s well-rounded, gracious and devoted to success in a way that would make his mom proud. He said that when asked how he felt about the TIME cover. He said he wished she were alive to see it and share this with him. It would have made her proud. Go Obama 08 - Keep Your Head Up like mom would want!

:-)

“Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen, however, is not so crazy about Wright’s message. He writes that in 1982 Wright founded Trumpet Newsmagazine; his daughters serve as publisher and executive editor. And Cohen takes exception to the magazine’s naming of Louis Farrakhan as the winner of the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award, saying he was a man who “truly epitomized greatness.”

Cohen, however, believes that Farrakhan “epitomizes racism” for most Americans. He adds that he sees nothing in Obama’s record that supports anti-Semitism of any kind, or agrees with the award given to Farrakhan. But praise for an “anti-Semitic demagogue is not a minor difference or an intrachurch issue.”

“The Obama camp takes the view that its candidate, now that he has been told about the award, is under no obligation to speak out on the Farrakhan matter,” writes Cohen. “It was not Obama’s church that made the award but a magazine. This is a distinction without much of a difference. And given who the parishioner is, the obligation to speak out is all the greater. He could be the next American president. Where is his sense of outrage?”

But M.J. Rosenberg, writing at TPM Cafe, says Cohen’s demand that Obama repudiate his minister is “idiocy.” He also writes that in the past few days “few Jews active in the community have not received calls or e-mails telling them that Obama is a threat to the Jews.” The Cohen column, he believes, takes these smears “mainstream.”

“Cohen must know that but, in his dotage, he has descended into Ed Koch/Jackie Mason land where the Cossacks are always at the gates. This column will be circulated widely and will hurt Obama, perhaps badly.”

I suppose it is best to get stupid stuff like this out now. Someone within 6 degrees of separation of a candidate says or believes something stupid and a candidate is supposed to comment. Praise for LBJ is stretched ridiculously to be interpreted as demeaning to MLK. A quaver in the voice turns into a gushing river of tears. This stuff is really stupid.

This message got out in NewsMax and it makes Oboma sound like a Farrakhan enthusiast. Do I see another “Swift Boat” in the works? I’ll be looking forward to seeing how he handles this. He certainly can’t afford to be perceived as antisemitic or for that matter as an anti American black race revolutionist. This is sad, and I hope he’s able to fight back.

So ‘ “While Wright works his magic on enormous congregations, with the basic message of liberation theology, that we are everywhere in chains, but assured of deliverance by the living Christ,…” ‘

There has in the past on some of the right wing blogs and talking head shows an accusation that Obama is a Muslim. If he attends this church where Christ is taught to be the deliver, he is a Christian or at least a non-Muslim as they would not listen to such a teaching.
