Labor Day for Clinton v Obama
Labor unions figured prominently in the below-the-surface battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in Nevada today. First, it was the state teachers’ union — which, as Major Garrett reports, lost a lawsuit that would have overturned a law allowing casino workers to caucus at designated sites on the Las Vegas Strip. The law is widely seen as helping Obama, who has the support of the powerful, casino-heavy Culinary Workers union.
The teachers haven’t officially endorsed Clinton, but the folks behind the lawsuit are known Hillary supporters — and sued shortly after Obama won the Culinary endorsement.
The campaign tried to distance itself from the suit, but aides made clear they supported the principle behind it. “While we were not involved in this lawsuit, and have always said that we would play by the rules that we’re given, it has always been our hope that every Nevadan should have equal access and opportunity to participate in the caucus,” said spokesman Jay Carson.
“Make no mistake –the current system that prohibits some shift workers from being able to participate, while allowing others to do so, would seem to benefit other campaigns. More importantly it is unfair.”
Carson even raised the specter of voter intimidation by the Culinary Workers. “We also are concerned with recent news reports about voter intimidation tactics that would further discourage some Nevadans from participating on Saturday. Our strategy remains the same — we want as many people as possible to participate in the caucus, and we are going to reach out to as many Nevadans as possible in an effort to do as well as possible on Saturday.”
The Clinton campaign also lashed out at a Nevada radio ad sponsored by another union backing Barack Obama, the textile and hotel workers of UNITE HERE. In the Spanish-language ad, the narrator says Clinton “does not respect our people” and calls her “shameless” for “[allowing] her friends to attak our people’s right to vote this Saturday” — a reference to the teachers’ lawsuit. The ad calls the act “unforgivable.”
On a conference call, Clinton supporter and Hispanic organizer Dolores Huerta called the radio spot “pathetic,” speculating that Obama’s campaign had to stoop so low because he has no record on Latino issues. She called on Obama to renounce the ad.
And spokesman Phil Singer accused the Obama campaign of hypocrisy, saying “In Iowa, Senator Obama and his campaign went out of his way to attack labor unions for independently promoting other candidates. But in Nevada, he’s looking the other way as they falsely attack his opponents. “
“While we clearly disagree with the attacks being made against us, we do respect the right of labor unions to participate in the process. Senator Obama apparently has no problem with groups running ads as long as they attack others,” he said, adding “while that’s audacious, it’s certainly not hopeful.”
Obama’s campaign shot back with the same line of defense Team Clinton used when discussing the teachers’ lawsuit: distance. Spokesman Bill Burton says, “it’s not our ad,” adding “if the Clinton campaign has questions, they should contact the union that sponsored the ad.”
“It takes some chutzpah” for the Clinton campaign to complain, he said, since they have been “repeatedly launching absolutely false attacks against Senator Obama.”
UPDATE: John Edwards got into the act on those UNITE HERE ads, siding with Hillary Clinton — in part because of a spat he had with Obama over similar ads in Iowa. In a statement, Edwards said “Just three weeks ago Senator Obama was calling on me and Senator Clinton to demand that outside groups not run ads on our behalf. These new ads look like the same old nasty divisive politics that both Senators Obama and Clinton denounced just two days ago. It is extremely important for us to quit focusing on fights between politicians and instead focus on what we need to do for working people, for the Latino community in Nevada and across the country.”

Hillary is a joke.
BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA is America’s True Presidential Leader.
BARACK is experienced and he is ready to do the Presidential duties on day one.
BARACK is well educated and he can get the job done- he graduated from Harvard at the top of his class with a degree in Foreign Affairs.
BARACK is a very hard worker and he will work for change for America. He worked hard to organize the downtrodden on the south side of Chicago, and he’ll work just as hard as President.
BARACK will do great things for America - he is truly committed. He’s been a true public servant- a community organizer, a teacher, a civil rights attorney, and a legislator- for 25 years.
BARACK is a doer. He gets laws passed and gets people around issues that normally wouldn’t even talk to each other, like the ACLU and the police in Chicago.
BARACK respects the American flag, he also saluates the American flag, and she respects the national anthem as well. No matter how much the Clinton camp keeps circulating smear e-mails claiming the opposite, it will never stick.
BARACK is America’s True Change Machine and he is ready to get the Wheels of Change rolling for America as President.
Thank you for an article that reports the events without twisting phrases out of context so that it makes one candidate appear less worthy while making the other appear god-like. I’m tired of seeing my candidate shredded in the press out of misogyny and fear of something new.
Please … for the love of the U.S. of A. ….
All I have to say is Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Bush, Clinton?
Are you out of you mind … think and wake up!
Go Barack Obama 2008
Funny how the Billery folks just cant accept that she is seriously flawed.
My vote and money is on Barack and Im taking 100 to 1.
Vote Obama for a Change you can BELIEVE in.
How many Clinton lies must be repeated? 1000000000000000 x 100000000000000
Depends on what the defination of is is!!!!
I did have xxx with that man! and it was baaaaad!
Lies, Lies, tell the USA lies!
Obama is a moron who will get trounced in the general election. He is nothing but an empty suite, overhyped by kids desperate to find an idol. I would never vote for this guy.
John Edwards is the man.
It is interesting, Hillary can personally smear Senator Obama and lie about him. Bill Clinton also smears Senator Obama and belittles him personally. The UNITED HERE puts out an ad telling it like it is about Clinton Supporters, the suit, and Hillary supporting it by not rejecting it and Hillary calls for Senator Obama to pull the ad?? Senator Obama did not put this ad out. What’s the matter, Hillabeasty, cant take it when someone constructively critizes you? Oh I forget, you think you are untouchable, you think you are the inevitable winner, you think we OWE you the Presidency, you think you are best for America, you, with yours and Bill’s scandals and coverups, think you are the Queen and King of America. I have news for you, we do NOT like you, nor do we like what you stand for. Is Bill suffering from senility? His behavior and temper tantrums sure point in that direction. Perhaps instead of dragging him around campaigning for you, you ought to get him some help. And what about you, with the many faces of Eve…oops, of Hillary, how long do you think you can change your personna and expect people to buy your BS? You and Bill ought to take an extended vacation and live us alone. Hillary, your time has come and gone, we do not want you nor do we need you as our leader. Your claim of 35 years of experience id phony; you have held no government office, you have not owned a business, your government experience is 5 years as a New York senator, nothing more. If you are going to claim as experience the years as the wife of the gover of Arkansas and the eight years as First Lady, then release your records and willingly share them with us. Also if you are making claim the good things that came with those positions, then, I would think you would claim the scandals and coverups which occured in Ark and at the White House. You cannot have it both ways. In reality, the best thing for America and her citizen is for you and Bill to just go away somewhere and enjoy your golden years. You both are looking pretty tired and worn, you are hasbeens, accept that gracefully and move on.
HILLARY CLINTON is America’s True Presidential Leader.

Clearly, Obama is finding difficulty trying to be consistent. He cannot expect us to shift with his positions in Illinois and now ‘changing’ his stand when discussing the teachers’ lawsuit. Obamas
spokesman Bill Burton says, “it’s not our ad,” while quick to attack when the shoe was on the other feet in Illinois.
Is this Obamas idea of ‘CHANGE’? His shifting positions is indeed worrying.
WILL THE REAL OBAMA PLEASE STAND UP AND MAKE A STAND HE WONT CHANGE, as much as loves the word ‘CHANGE’?
HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON or just Hillary RODHAM, whats the difference, its just a name. It may as well be Hillary Obama! Get over it. Its her capabilities, experience and proven track record that matters. Its her ability to start from Day 1. Its her grasp over policy details. Its her understanding of world affairs, which, if Obama takes the trouble and inculcates the honesty and patience, too will master. Obama would do better spending precious time learning from Hillary. Obama, please be patient, please be real.
hillaray i don’t know of this experience that you so much boast about. is it being bill clinton’s wife that is the experience. i wonder how far you would have gone in this election if you were simply HILLARY RODHAM
As far as any Sam, Samuel or Samantha and more!
The two people (Blondshag and Silversto) above forget one major experience that Hilery has– a devoted wife for Bill. Even if he sleeps with someone and lied to all Americans, she is still waighting for him at home with cry, not with anger.
To have a woman sworn in as President of the United States would be such an amazing and beautiful, historic sight. I think the fact that men like Bush have run our country, into the ground, has made this amazing opportunity that we now have before us that much sweeter.
Women have been told to sit down and shut up for too long! It is time for a woman to take charge and show the world she can lead our great nation as good or better as any man. I like Barack Obama, he has a good message, but he is a “dreamer”, Hillary is a “doer” and the best woman to come along in our history for the job. There may not be a chance like this again for a long time. Obama is very young still and there is plenty of time for him to learn the ropes and run again in the future. Hillary is ready to lead right away, she already knows exactly what to do and you can’t buy or “dream” experience.
Hillary is such a valuable asset to America that we are so very fortunate to have at this moment in time when all of our people so desperately need the kind of caring a woman like her can bring immediately, care we can rely on to be there. The timing could not be more perfect. There is always time for the rest, but right now is Hillary’s time, while we still have her. Hillary has my vote all the way!
We are all starting to wonder if Obama can actually LEAD us in a new direction, instead of just wishin’ and hopin’ he can.
Is THIS what Obama supporters call a “new” direction in politics:
Obama’s campaign shot back with the same line of defense Team Clinton used when discussing the teachers’ lawsuit…”
I hope Obama wins.
I am a union man who was on the fence. Obama’s praise for reagan did the trick for me. I now am on the fence between hillary and Edwards. Obama praises the worst President for Unions in my life time (I am 63), remember the Traffic controllers, and puts Nixon and Bill clinton in the same class. If he wanted to praise a President for vision and change, why not a good Democrat like Roosevelt, or Kennedy. Kennedy’s vision was for civil rights, Roosevelt’s was for economic recovery which he achieved. Praise Reagan and ask for union support? Not mine.
If you are at war, and you had Hillary, and Obama as a choice to lead you, or proctect you; which one would you pick to protect?
In this time of age, we need someone who can communicate with the world. Some one who can bring peace through out the world, and I honestly don’t think Hillary can do that. Most country do not repect women, and do not want women as a leader. How would she be able to communicate with them, if they do not respect her?
I love Hillary, and my families also, but I don’t think she is a good fit for the next president.
Mastermind,
If you need a leader during time of war, and a strong military to repel aggression, neither Clinton nor Obama are good choices.
Oh, and by the way, in the history of the world, there has never been “peace”.
hilary clinton is the biggest ***** you will ever meet! thats why i’m voting for her.
Do not vote base on your heart.
Do not vote because Hillary is a women.
Do not vote because Obama is Black
Do not voe base on rumors you hear from both parties.
Vote base on your mind.
Think before you vote.
Remember where the country is today, where do you want it to be tomorrow?
Do you want someone who can just get up and go?
Do you want someone who does not have a time where their personallity might change do to nature?
Do you want someone who can communicate with any country?
Do you want someone who can lead the country?
Do you want someone whom experience what you are, or had experiece?
Do you want someone who knows what being poor, or rich feels like?
Do you want someone who know how it’s feel like having a lot of bills?
Ask your self these question. Come up with your own ?
skies 11 your right there has never been peace but before you leave this earth wouldn’t it be nice if there was at least a chance.
To Mastermind -
Most countries don’t respect woman leader? Even Pakistan had Buhtto.
Your logic here is that because other countries don’t respect woman, US should not have a woman president until they learn how to respect woman?
Maybe they should learn how to respect woman by the fact US having a woman president!!! And maybe you need to respect yourself first to ask for respect from other people!
Got it, huh?
LISTEN EVERYBODY, PLEASE!! With any luck, one year from Saturday, progressive democrat will be sworn in as President, ending 8 years of Bush/Cheney/Rove?Rumsfeld/torture/shredding of the constitution/unprovoked war/degradation of the environment smear and fear tactics. Whether it’s Obama, Clinton or Edwards, we wil be celebrating a new direction and breathe a sigh of relief. Don’t get too hung up on which candidate it is: ALL OF THEM ARE WORLD’S BETTER THAN BUSH. In a close campaign, all sides say things to try to pull away from the pack. It’s great if you have a favorite among the top three, work for them, het others to vote, etc - just remember to vote for the democratic candidate in November, whomever he or she is. That is the only way you are going to get any meaningful change this year. PEACE!!
by June all the unions will be united as one movement . Against some of the scarist
Guys ever running.
I can’t believe that she would stoop to mudslinging. I can’t vote for anyone like that. her campaign would be so much better if she would look or focus on the needs of the people instead of focusing on Barack.
