Not Going Negative, Just Responding
by Malini Bawa
John McCain has some new flyers out in South Carolina and Michigan, hitting Mitt Romney on taxes and abortion.
But McCain insists that what he’s doing is NOT negative campaigning. The Senator told reporters in Kalamazoo, Michigan, that the mailers are a general response to Romney’s attacks, rather than a specific response to a particular Romney ad.
McCain’s mailers accuse Romney of supporting taxpayer funded abortions and raising taxes by $700 million when he was governor of Massachusetts.

This is pathetic. Mr. Straight-talk, “I’ll never go negative,” is going worse than anything Romney ever dished out. What’s more, he’s not even trying to tell a partial truth. And what, praytell, is Mr. McCain responding to? Last I heard, Romney’s “contrast ads” were only big in Iowa and New Hampshire–both old and cold now. Seems like a “desparate” and flailing response to me. I guess Mr. McCain is starting another “tail-spin.” But he’s good at those.
MCCAIN IS A HYPOCRITE!!!! NOT NEGATIVE?? WHY IS IT NEGATIVE WHEN ROMNEY DOES THE SAME THING?? YOU ARE A TOTAL, COMPLETE, POWER-HUNGRY HYPOCRITE!!
Talking about your opponents record is okay, if it’s truthful!!
MCCAIN LIES IN THESE MAILERS–ROMNEY DID NOT SUPPORT TAX-PAYER FUNDED ABORTIONS. THE FEDERAL COURTS DEMANDED IT!! ROMNEY ALSO HAD A NET TAX DECREASE AS GOVERNOR.
I USED TO HAVE RESPECT FOR SENATOR MCCAIN, BUT I AM BEGINNING TO SEE HIS TRUE COLORS, HE IS A WASHINGTON INSIDER, WHO HAS LEARNED HOW TO LIE LIKE A PRO!!
How about voting for a candidate that doesn’t have a wishy-washy record to attack?
With 26 years Congressional experience and being the ranking member on the Armed Services Committee, Duncan Hunter has by far the most consistent conservative record of all the candidates. Additionally, he makes a strong stand on all the issues. Because he is a man of action instead of talk, he has won all previous elections by landslides. He even has bills in play now to better America in the way of jobs, economy, and national security.
He is a candidate that world leaders would take seriously. He is the most qualified presidential candidate! http://www.GoHunter08.com Look at a superior conservative record!
Why are this negative attacks on Romney from McCain not news worthy!!!
It is sickening to see the fabricated polls and interviews being put forward by liberal medias against Mitt Romney saying he does not have a chance against any ‘”Democrap running.”.. In my mind he is the one that they fear the most as he has the intelligence, the integrity, common sense and values that is missing in every one of the democrats as well as other republicans.. The fact that just about everyone is piling on Romney to knock him out of the race early is proof enough… Just what is it that all other candidates, media, campaign Carl are afraid of? Mitt is the only candidate that can be effective as a leader in this troubled time… The rest are just politicians talking out of their a–es!! None of them has a clue how to even begin to solve the problems we face… Just ask them specifically a question. McCain will have his people give you his answer.. Huckabee will dance around the answer and tell you a joke.. both will tell you that Romney attacked them and its not fair to tell people about our records, he a dirty trickster… What about hucks thinly veiled attack on Mitts religion..” I just dont know much about them there Mormons” If he knows so little about the LDS religion and is so quick to attack those who are peaceful law abiding generous people, how can we trust him to know anything about radical Islam that hs sworn our destruction, and how to deal effectivly with that threat….McCain has no idea how to effect any kind of change that will bring jobs to americans that are suffering because of jobs lost overseas… His plan is to throw a little money around Michigan and teach auto workers to flip hambergers.. since they are the only jobs that arent disappearing forever never to return… Empty rehtoric… How does he propose to stop pork barrel spending? He hasent done anything to stop it in all his years in the Senate… No line item veto, He did succeed in putting a muzzle on his detractors with McCain/ Feingold … What was it they taught him in Communist prison camp… If we dont like what you say we shut you up…. Evil Fears Truth… and will stop at nothing to destroy truth…
Too funny, Mac you are definately a politician through and through, in other words you suck!
I would take a Romney, Hunter, Thompson, any day over you!
I am disappointed in McCain. He is a hypocrite. Romney is the better man. He has the best resume and I hope that he beats McCain in Michigan. Then he will have won Michigan and Wyoming. Romney inspires voters. He want all of us to live and have the American Dream. He is the expert on it. I support Romney all the way until he becomes President of this great country. Best of luck to Romney!!!!!
MCCAIN is the biggest hypocrite! MIchigan DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS IGNORANT MAN. HE IS FULL OF LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am Mitt Romney supporter. Fox News is being a little bias here when they do not report McCain’s ads as negative & attack ads. Here you have McCain as being a straight talker and yet he really goes negative with personal attacks. Romney’s ads were ads where he was pointing out differences between himself and the other candidates and Fox News called them negative & attack ads.
Go Mitt!!!
Mitt Romney unlike McCain is not a whiner! All I hear from McCain is that he is being attacked. He is part of the establishment in Washington DC that is basically pandering for votes and not about the peoples business. To think that he is going to change is foolishness. He is just more of the same sad story coming out of DC. Get smart America and take a good look at what you get with McCain. More of the same. One thing about Hukabee, he is more of an attack dog than a whiner. His problem is that he is just a big bag of words, with no credible solutions to contribute to helping this country move forward. Liberal and just like the democrats. And who does he think he is siccing Chuck Norris on the general public. VOTE ROMNEY!!!! if you want and need a problem solver
This junk makes me laugh, McCain called Romney actually bringing McCains record to play “going negative” and pretended to take the high road. Now he is doing the same thing (bringing Romney’s record into play- which I think is appropriate) and is saying that it’s not being negative. This just shows that McCain really is a political insider and not an outsider and another reason I don’t support him. It’s politics as usual to attack someone for doing something you have done or plan on doing or are currently doing.
Senator McCain-
I hate to point out the obvious (at least to those of us NOT in DC), but a reponse ad would generally clarify YOUR positions on the issues…not criticize someone else’s positions.
Contrast ads are NOT attack ads. If Gov. Romney (or anyone else) were to call you…oh, I don’t know…”Dishonest” like you did to Gov. Romney, that would be a good example of an attack ad. Let’s have a thorough debate on the issues…let’s not defamate the other candidates’ characters.
Newsweek has called McCain’s attacks on Romney as wrong and it says that they are untrue under fact checker. It also says that his attacks on Hillary are not honest either. It proves this in an article. Factcheck.org: McCain’s Misleading Mailer

Summary
McCain is sending out a postcard mailing in South Carolina that is misleading on more than one point.
It says that “Romney provided taxpayer-funded abortions,” a distortion. Romney’s Massachusetts health-care plan faced a court order requiring abortions to be covered.
It says Romney “refused to endorse Bush Tax Cut Plan,” but fails to note that McCain himself voted against it.
It says, “Hillary tried to spend $1 million for a Woodstock museum” until “John McCain said NO.” In fact, McCain wasn’t present for the most important votes on the project.
Analysis
A copy of the mailer was provided to us by the Mitt Romney campaign at our request, after news accounts about it surfaced over the weekend.
It shows a smiling John McCain promising to “fight for lower taxes” and to “veto every single pork-barrel bill that crosses my desk.” Fair enough. Those pledges sound very similar to promises Romney himself has been making. But the mailer goes on to draw a picture of Romney’s record as governor of Massachusetts that is so distorted as to discredit McCain’s claim to be the candidate of “straight talk.”

Campaign Carl, … It’s so obvious that Carl dislikes Mitt Romney … Fox News will have trouble staying fair and balanced!
Mitt Romnay has degrees from BYU and Havard in Law and Business. What other Canadiate has this resume? No ONE. You have McCain whinning about the truth that he is old and a hasbeen a career politician other than his time at the hilton what does he have to offer, but liberal views? And Huckabee, lied to us about his being the “only chirstian leader” with a degree and understands the Islamic/Fascists?????( this was really good when he talked about Pakistan). He has no degree in theology never finished it. And for him to bring in the church agaisnt the “Mormons” is just unamerican. And lets us not forget his, I’m not going to show the ad, but did anyway moment … this was a HOWARD DEAN SCREAM that the media chose not to air.
Carl, your hate for Mitt Romney is obvious in your demeaner of him. Please Fox I am a loyal FoxNews watcher, but cannot go on like this as long as you support his BIASED and UNFAIR treatment of Mitt Romney.
John McCain is nothing but a Blue meanie (of Beatles fame). I see he is using the same negative ad that McHuckabee was too NICE to run for anyone but the press corp in Iowa…so I guess he loaned it to his pal McCain. 700 million eh?…strange the fingerprints one leaves on NEGATIVE attack ads…
Hillarious!
no thanks to the war moger McCain. just Ron Paul. Total Washington change please
While these guys go back & forth in their `attack ‘ ads , head on over to MikeHuckabee.com ,
please take a little time to read about him & the issues he wants to fight for. Try to have an open mind , forget what you’ve heard about him in the media & see what you think about him after you’ve read what he believes in & what some of the bloggers are saying about him. Thank-you
I agree with all the quotes I’ve been reading here today. Let’s just hope that not only the people of Michigan but the rest of America will wake up and realize that Mitt Romney is the candidate with the most integrity in this race, the most education, experience and proven ability to be a strong visionary leader for times of critical change our nation now faces. McCain is an old man whose day is done and an established member of “business as usual” in Washington. Huckabee is a preacher and social liberal. Those 2 are in it for the glory. I’m disturbed by this persistent attitude we’ve developed in this country that a person cannot be a strong leader with integrity if they happen to be “rich”. Since when did it become a sin to be wealthy? It’s the American Dream to be prosperous! Give me a leader who can’t be BOUGHT and CONTROLLED any day! Who’s spending HIS OWN MONEY for the chance to do great service to his country! Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Monroe, Teddy Roosevelt:l wealthy leaders and great presidents! And no, I AM NOT A WEALTHY PERSON, working middle bearing the tax burden class born and still today…GO MITT!!! WAKE UP AMERICA to values of hard work, growth, development, innovation and LESS GOVERNMENT!!
Tim, you sound as if Huckabee is the only honest one. That is hilarious. Huckabee effectively aired a negative attack add and didn’t have to pay for it or answer for it. Nice, sophisticated political maneuver for the “guy next door,” eh? That in response to Mitt Romneys contrast adds.
The only honest one is Mitt Romney, and those who call him fake are only repeating hearsay. At least he had the courage to admit he was wrong about choice on abortion, and change his stance. He has never been “pro abortion!” Never! He has always believed it was a grevious sin, but his attitude on the role of government in the choice is what changed. For honesty and integrity, not to mention a resume of successful executive leadership and history of turning things around and reforming them into successful enterprises, from private companies to the Olympics, Mike Huckabee cannot come close to touching Mitt Romney. I hope enough people can wake up and look at the real issues, and get over their religious bigotry. This is 2008, not 1847!

Remember, we are better off if any one of the Republican candidates takes office than to turn Washington over to the democrats. It is Unfortunate that republicans are tearing down rupublican candidates with unfounded, hateful and bigoted comments. Suppose your candidate wins the primary… Well, What does it matter if all the negative campagning turns would-be-voters away from our party in the final election! In light of the war, slower economy, housing crisis etc. the democrats have ability to sway the thinking of the ignorant. You don’t have to be the best candidate to get into the White House. (Remember Jimmy Carter?) There is really only one candidate that can bring the whole republican party together and lead a victory against the democrates later this November. I like all the candidates on our side, but there is only one with proven leadership, morals, knowlege and the record to bring positive fundamental change to Washington and do what is right for America. Be honest and open as you study each candidate and you can’t deny that Mitt is our only chance against the democrats. We need a president that can lead America not just fill a seat. It would be nice if the republican candidates who are most favored by the democratic party would opt out and endorse the strongest candidate to win the White House.
McCain’s ‘Truth Squad’ should go to work on their own ads first! What hypocrisy when McCain digs Mitt Romney as being a ‘Flip-Flopper’! When it comes to controlling illegal immigration, John McCain now claims, “I’ve heard the people; our borders must be secured first.” As one of the grand architects of the horribly flawed amnesty bill, McCain never priortized the need to secure our boders ahead of granting amnesty to 12-20 million illegal immigrants. So who’s the Flipper now?
McCain also boasts he’s Mr. Military, because he called for the surge call in Iran. Some Commander in Chief he’d make —he spares no cost of human life or tax dollars to protect Iran’s borders, but only now ‘hears’ Americans demanding their borders be protected against illegal immigrants. Sure his hearing has improved–it was the deafing sound of the Tsunami sized wave of anti-amnesty phone calls that crashed the Senate phone system. Somehow, having the heart of his campain hopes smashed along with his amnesty bill ironically improved his hearing.
If he, Bush, Kennedy, Clinton and the rest of his cloak room Cronies hadn’t written the amnesty bill in secret, he might have been able to hear the millions of protesting American voices. Actions do speak louder than words, and his back-room politicing is evidence that he didn’t hear anti-amesty sentiment protesters because he didn’t want too — until now. Surprise, surprise! Mr. McCain —is the Biggest Flip-Flopper!
What puzzles me is, how can voters can suffer from such severe short term memory loss about this guy’s immigration plans? Also, now that our failing economy is taking center stage among candidates, why aren’t voters making the connection between illegal immigration and our failing job economy, broken heathcare system, and over-burden schools? As long as we have a poorer-than poor, unlimited supply of workers who are tax subsidized, our economy isn’t going to recover–it’s going to get alot worse unless we elect some who will stop it.
Mitt Romney is the man who will defend the laws of our country and secure our borders-not hand those who breaik laws a ‘get of jail free card’ as Senator McCain will. This is why Mitt Romney must be our next Presidenbt. He’s the only candidate who has had the courage to state—-from the very beginning of his campain— that he will adhere to existing immigration laws, seure our borders, welcome legal immigrants and has demonstarted that he has the business and finacial expertise to turn America around!
Referring to the New York Times Article “GOP Rivals Dislike Romney”
It is really too bad that the man McCain has to stoop so low, because I don’t believe that his statement (when asked about Romney) “Never wrestle with a pig, because you get dirty and the pigs like it” should never be spoken about any other human being. Of course, such statements are not without precedent. Christ himself was hated and despised by the crowd friendly jews (Pharisees, Sadducees and Hypocrits) If that is the kind of restraint that Mr. McCain has, he would in my opinion not be a good choice to represent the people of this great country. Behold the man Mitt Romney!!
