Giuliani disses Green Bay Packers fan

Punta Gorda, FL — Rudy Giuliani refused to sign a potential voter’s Green Bay Packers hat after a campaign stop Monday afternoon, saying it would be “bad luck.”

The loyal New York Giants fan denied the request as he was signing autographs and posing for photos after a meet and greet at the Village Fish Market and Restaurant on day two of his bus tour through the Sunshine State. While Florida has become the campaign’s must-win state, Giuliani is apparently drawing a line as to how far he will go to woo voters.

“I won’t sign that,” he said after campaign chairman Pat Oxford handed him the hat. “No, no, no. That would be bad luck right now.”

The Giants are set to play the Packers in the NFC Championship game on Sunday and Giuliani is a life-long fan of his hometown team.

“I’ll sign it after (the game),” Giuliani told the man as he instead signed another supporters’ Giants visor. But the Packers fan was relentless, again demanding Giuliani “sign it now!” Giuliani refused the request after which the man could be heard grunting.

The former NYC mayor is also a committed New York Yankees fan but was criticized this fall when he opted to support the Boston Red Sox–citing his loyalty to the American League–after his team was knocked out of contention. No word yet whether he might do the same for the NFC rival if the Giants go down on Sunday.

That was stupid - just sign the hat - he’s running for president of all Americans not just new yorkers. That was really dumb

Comment by Jack o'neil

he’s right the Giants are going to need all the luck they can get.
GO PATRIOTS

I think Rudy’s refusal and feistiness is cute! You know Mitt would sign anything! He’d even write “Go Yankees!” on a Red Sox Jersey if you asked him to.

That’s what I want……a superstitious president. “Oh, no, no….I can’t sign that Iraqi National Soccer Team ball. That would be bad luck. We might lose the war.”

god what an idiot.

I agree with Iam Tulsa, isn’t he supposed to be running for president of ALL Americans?

He’s been so useless in the latest debates, I’d never vote for him anyway, but this clinches it.

Go Pack Go,,,,,,,

Lighten up you people!! Not everything in life revolves around politics. We all love our own sports teams and Rudy would be criticized by you same people if he weren’t loyal to the Giants.

Since when is “Disses” proper English to use in a news headline?

Next headline: Oh snap! Rudy say he just be frontin’ yo!

Hey Rudy - I’m a Florida Cheesehead, too … and I VOTE!

I live in Wisconsin, though not a Packer fan. Packer fans are zealots who are very intolerant of all other teams and their fans. I guarantee if Tommy Thompson was still in the race and in Rudy’s position, he would NEVER sign a Giant’s hat.

Rudy has always been know as a big sports fan for his hometown teams and is genuine about it (unlike alot of other politicians)….let him be a fan.

Lighten up. It’s nice to know candidates root for sports teams like REAL FANS.

Brian, I also live in Wisconsin and your gerneralization is not true that Packer fans are intolerant of other teams fans. However my experience has been that some but not all non-packer fans who live in Wisconsin are very intolerant and jealous of the huge Packer fan base. You seem to fit the profile of the some people. Just speaking from experience.

I say let the voters decide on Giuliani.

I hope he keeps putting his foot in his mouth with stuff like this. First he roots for the Red Sox (because they are in the A.L.) and now this. What a silly, silly man. For a guy who mentions the attacks on the WTC as often as he does (remember him running through the streets with his staff, trying to figure out what happened?) he sure doesn’t think all that well on his feet.

Comment by Stav

I think that was a plant. Rudy has already proven he will say anything about any team to suck up to voters. No one will forget your “Red Sox” moment Rudy!

Just sign the hat - he is running for President of the United states - not mayor of New York. Just sign the hat and move along. Making an issue of it does him no good.

Comment by moqui

Good for you, Rudy.

And, btw, he’ll definitely support the Packers over the AFC rep if it comes to that. Especially if the AFC rep is the Cheatriots.

Comment by Ben

I think it shows guts from Rudy not to sign it. Even something as simple as a hat. While I do not plan to vote for Rudy in the primary, I have to say, I am the same as I won’t put my name on something I don’t believe in. I will be routing for the Packers on sunday just because I think the Packers are the only team with a CHANCE of beating the Patriots.

I don’t see how any of you could fault the man for not wanting to sign something that goes against his beliefs.

Go Rudy, Go Pack, Go 72 Dolphins!!!!

Comment by Larry W

Good for Rudy. He isn’t a phony. If I did the same to mitt Romney (with a NY Yankees hat) I would hope he would tell me to take a hike.

To me this is a small example of the type of person Rudy is. Want a more real example. Saudi prince offer 10 million for 911 aid so long as Rudy signs on to Israel bashing propoganda. Rudy tells prince to go where the sun does8zt shine. Or perhaps you might remember terrorist Yassir Arafat trying to attend a theater event while visiting the UN. Rudy kicked him out. Or you might remember the tragic killing of an immigrant (Diallo was the name) Rudy could have cowed to the race baiting inc. (i.e. all Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, etc… ;) and condemned his police for what was a tragic accident. Rudy refused. Infact he even said something to the affect I know what to say to make it all better, but that would be wrong so I won’t say it.

I want a president who represents the country, what I don’t want is a politician who will say or do anything to cozy favor for a vote.

I’m glad to see Rudy has a backbone and stands up for his favorite team even if it is the lowly Giants. All good presidents have their favorite sports team. GO Chargers/packers/Giants

Good for Rudy! I don’t like the Packers or the Giants (or Rudy for that matter) but you have to support your team and draw the line somewhere. Superstition, smuperstition; this is about a guy who is supporting his team. All you haters out there leave the man alone. Heck, this might even make me take a closer look at Rudy. At least he is standing up for something!

It hard to believe how many people care about this nonsense. There are grave concerns facing our nation. Simple question who will best be able to lead us? Answer Rudy. See this link as to why:

Anyone changing their vote based on the signing or non-signing of a sports team’s hat should be let within 100 feet of a voting booth, many of you are just pathetic.

Mixing sports and politics big mistake. I thought Rudy would be more skilled than that.

Hate to be the one to break it to you, Rudy, but unless Green Bay really screws up, the Giants are going to get smoked on Sunday, no matter what you do.

Comment by rudy iacono

Rudy is my man and if you want a phony then elect one who will tell you what you want to hear as opposed to what you should hear. Too often we expect our politicians to meander to everyones wish and when it comes to sports we should be true to ourselves and not pretend to be wanna bee fans for the sake of a vote. It would certainly be a sad commentary that people in this great country of ours could not respect our own human interests and the fact that Guiliani proved himself to be genuine is more the reason that we should respect his honesty and his ability to be just like the rest of America.

The media makes this sound like it’s an outrage. This is basically a non-issue. I am a true Packer fan and woud not feel the least bit rejected by this. Everyone knows that the media is always looking for stories that will help sell their newspaper. Find another story.

Comment by bob graham

rudy would not sign the packer hat but he gladly signed my giants hat…. as you can see in the picture.. go GIANTS and go RUDY bob

Comment by Nadine

I agree with Jeff. The voters should decide, regardless of what he does before the election, what matters is what he does AFTER the election. Besides, being a fan or not of the Packers shouldn’t affect anyone’s vote, whether or not you DO live in Wisconsin. Unfortunately for me, I had to move to the middle of Bear country, so I have to search for fellow Packer fans where I am! That’s neither here nor there - the thing is ALLl fans, no matter what team you love, are usually just that - FANS, meaning they get upset when you “diss” their teams. There’s no news there, it’s as it’s always been since the beginning of the NFL. Everyone else should just get used to it, and be quiet about it, they’re not going to change for you, or anyone else.
