Edwards Takes Side in Clinton-MLK Controversy
Speaking before a predominantly African-American congregation at the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, South Carolina, John Edwards criticized Hillary Clinton and her husband for comments they made last week just before the New Hampshire primary vote.
“I’m gonna say I was troubled recently to see a suggestion that real change came not through the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, but through a Washington politician,” Edwards said. “I fundamentally disagree with that. Those who believe that real change starts with Washington politicians have been in Washington too long and are living in a fairy tale.”
Though he did not mention Hillary Clinton by name, Edwards sought to address a statement she recently made, which some thought gave President Lyndon B. Johnson more credit than Martin Luther King for civil rights laws. Edwards’ use of “fairy tale” seemed to be a gibe at Bill Clinton’s “fairy tale” characterization of Obama’s Iraq War position.
The Clintons have since defended their remarks, claiming they were purposely distorted by rival campaigns for political gain—and were not intended to depreciate Dr. King’s influence or degrade Barack Obama.
In his address to the congregation, Edwards praised Obama for his political achievements.
“This may come as a surprise to some of you coming from another presidential candidate,” Edwards said, “but as someone who grew up in the segregated South, I feel an enormous amount of pride when I see the success that Senator Barack Obama is having in this campaign.”
Edwards’ support of Obama continued: “The hopes that both Senator Obama and I have for this nation and this country that we love so much, these are not false hopes. They’re real hopes.”
At a press conference following Edwards’ speech, a reporter asked if he was running for Barack Obama’s Vice President instead of the Democratic nominee.
“I’m running for the Democratic nomination,” Edwards said in response, adding with a smile, “I think maybe he should be running for my VP.”

However, it seems that Edward indeed is running for the VP of Obama
Hillary Clinton tried some “race baiting” and ever though Obama didn’t bite Hillary is claiming that he did. It was Hillary’s plan as a last resort to label Obama as interjecting race into the campaign even if he didn’t… One big thing that has attracted white voters to Obama is that Obama, although black, has not tried to paint himself as a victim or said other things that bother whites… This is Hillary’s failed plan to make it look like he is.
Hillary Clinton insulted the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and she owes the country an apology. She comes across as a typical run of the mill politician who will say or do anything to get to the White House. She should join Giuliani and Romney in the other party.
I like how the Clinton’s got the BET founder to talk negatively about Obama. I wonder when he will feel used???
Change always comes from below, it’s just that radical change takes longer for the public to react. We are used to seeing the politicians putting their finger to the winds, but it is phoney politics. The real winds of change must come from the people.
It is so sad that we the people too often look only to our leadership for change.
All those Clinton critics who think that Civil Rights changes started with Dr. Martin Luther King should reread their History books. They seem to forget that the Kennedy’s, Hubert Humphrey and Lyndon Johnson played a huge role in helping the Civil Rights protestors of the 1960. Without the support ofthese “Washington Politicians” Civil Rights Legislation would never have happened.
How predictable!! Three days after the comments, Edwards is NOW so outraged. Give me a break!
Change is just a word; if you have no plan to effect change or a history of making change.
“Hillary Clinton tried some “race baiting” and ever though Obama didn’t bite Hillary is claiming that he did.”
–The bait was for Republicans too. Nixon played a bigger part than Johnson. Still, noone played a bigger part than Dr. King and the people who supported him, period. Way to go Republicans for not jumping into this.
This are excerpts from Peggy Noonan’s book, “The Case against Hillary Clinton” published in 2000. “The Clintons behave as though they are justified in using any tactic in pursuit of their goals. These include but are not limited to misleading constituents on serious and crucial issues; evading responsibility for governmental and administration mistakes, derelictions, and scandals; taking actions that are damaging to others but beneficial to the Clintons; smearing opponents and critics; ruining the lives of perceived enemies; and lying.” … “The Clintons’ behavior suggest above all a sharp sense of entitlement to power, a sense confirmed by the testimony of their friends.” … “Even the way she looks is a fiction. For the past seven years, as we all know, it has changed constantly. This did not, as Bill Clinton biographer, David Maraniss has noted, start in the White House. He told Chris Mathews in 1999 that Hillary has always been “her own Rorschach test.” You never know who or what she’ll be.” … “The constant parade of new looks reflects an endless attempt to craft a new personna, with new views and new ways to market herself as a commodity.” There you have it folks. The Clintons of yesteryears are the same Clintons we see today. The Clinton’s hatchet machine is is full bloom.
Seems like the media really want to up the hostilities among Democrats. It was an innocent remark that people were encouraged to take offense at and then Clinton took the bait and took offense at the taking of offense. Edwards isn’t helping. Let’s hear more about getting out of the war, not starting another one.
Clintons’ behavior suggests an attempt to get Obama off his “stump” speech talking points. Translation : where’s The Beef Obama”
The pattern continues with the Clinton machine! I trust that the American voter will not be fooled into believing the Clinton’s objective is what is good for the country rather than for their own self interest.
This story motivates me to share a couple of bits of information in response to the Johnson statements against Senator Obama and Senator Clintons stooping to new lows to attack Senator Obama.
First, lets remember that John Johnson, founder of BET, also founder of JET and EBONY magazines, got his big break from former President John Kennedy, who made a few phone calls to make sure that JET & EBONY received advertisment support from the Detroit auto makers for advertisemnt in his magazine targeted to African Americans.
Secondly, Sentaor CLinton has simply just lost any chance of getting my vote!
Like her or not, Hilary was NOT knocking King or the civil rights movement.
For John Edwards to jump on the out-of-context bandwagon, shows him for what he is - a tired, failing politician.
He just lost a vote - but hey, its a Florida vote so who cares? He has plenty to spare ….
Liberal hypocrites are bending over backwards to kiss black butt while playing the divisive race game for their own gain. Meanwhile, fools like Jorge ignorantly try to disparage innocent GOP candidates regarding this issue. It’s not them, it’s the racist Demos of all colors Jorge, pay attention.
“I think maybe he should be running for my VP”. Shoot down Hillary by taking sides with Obama, then shoot down Obama with the ‘experience’ card. What a jerk…
I think everyone should listen to the whole Clinton quote before making a decision. The press seems determined to make this into way more than it is.
PS; real Americans should be in favor of winning the war, not ending the war. Big difference. One saves civilization as we know it, the other is incentive to learn Arabic.
I’m not interested in the MUD SLINGING, how ever I am interested in where our Country is headed after the embarrassing Bush tenure.
I had hoped that the Democrats would leave the mudsling to others and focus on the changes and where our Country is going in the coming years.
Sadly, it’s becoming politics as usual, with les and less focus on what needs to be done to set our country back on course and more of the debating of moot points
Eugene Sadick: Martin Luther King started his Civil Rights campaign in 1954, long before Kennedy, Johnson or Humphrey were in the Oval office as President or VP. If you reread the history books you will find that the big debate in the Kennedy administration was how far to accommodate King’s demands given the attention it was getting in the press and the black eye the U.S.’s image was getting. If not for the courageous demonstrators putting their lives on the line every day in Civil Rights marches nothing would have been done for a decade or more, and it may never have taken the explicit form that it did because of MLK’s leadership. Change starts with grass roots action, something that has been woefully missing in recent years. We’ve all gotten complacent, and if it doesn’t affect us personally we’re all too willing to let our freedoms and our principals erode. Most politicians are quite facile at taking advantage of that, as the current administration has shown.
Folks, let’s face it, after 8 years of the criminal and inept Bush-Cheney administration and a GOP party that quite probably stole two general elections and has lied so often to the American public that virtually no one trusts the federal government at this time, anyone including Sen. Clinton would be a change for the better. Why about 20% of the Right Wing hate the Clintons so much is a mystery that can only be explained as jealousy over their success. Without doubt President Clinton will be regarded by history as in the top 15 of best presidents while losers like Nixon, Bush I and Bush II will be increasingly disparaged.
Now isn’t this just a bunch of %$^*. If you actually listen to what Clinton said you would realize that she was talking about older times when it did take a white politician to get something done. This is going WAY WAY too far. The only people that should be labeled as racists are the people that are claiming that it was a racist’s comment. I mean lets think about it for a minute, you can say something perfectly harmless that was the truth in earlier times (not the truth now) attempting to compare what it was then to what it is now, and they get attacked for it because some one that has a VERY BROAD imagination twists and turns it against the speaker and makes it seem that the speaker was in the wrong. I my opinion Obama owes Clinton an apology not only for blowing her perfectly harmless remark into a media frenzy but also for stating “you are likable enough, Hillary”. Now as for Edwards, he is only using this to promote his own campaign, speak about this comment why don’t you…
Perhaps some other people should read their history. The segregation laws were actually change by the courts, through the work of Houston and Marshall. The legislation that was created in the 1960s enforced the rulings of the Supreme Court.
Thank you Mr. Sadick! I do not support Hillary, but what she said was historically accurate. With absolute respect to Dr. King, he was not in a position to legislate change. He did indeed drive the issue to forefront of America’s conscious. He surely was a brave and great man of peace and nonviolence. His name is not being disrespected here. How have all of you people become so fragile and tender that you are offended and insulted so quickly? And as far as “owing the nation an apology”, oh come on - grow up.
Houston and Marshall challenge segregation laws long before Martin Luther King began his work. These people complemented each other. One doesn’t take away from the other.
I have no idea what the Democrats message is since it is so coded that no matter what they say or don’t say they can deny it, fudge it, shuck and jive around their words.
Anyone speak Democratese?
Edwards just lost my respect. he’s done the same thing Karl Rove did. “I’m gonna say”–yes, but he doesn’t just say it, so he doesn’t own it. “I was troubled recently”–but not now?–”to see a suggestion”–that someone made about something they heard; see, he won’t come out and state the author of the words, and it’s true that other people suggested a negative interpretation of what Clinton said– “that real change came not through the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, but through a Washington politician” –which is not what Clinton said; she clearly said that MLK himself knew enough about the real world that he himself campaigned for Johnson because he knew that his principles needed to be put into law. “I fundamentally disagree with that”–and so do I, but “that” is not what Clinton said; he has made the implication that she said something that was actually said by someone else. “Those who believe that real change starts with Washington politicians have been in Washington too long and are living in a fairy tale.” And I mostly agree with that statement; and that’s not what she said. Change starts wherever it can.
One can see how Mr. Edwards did so well as a trial lawyer!
I loves me some Edwards. I would love to see Edwards and Obama together on a ticket…I think they’d take the election all the way to the white house!
http://www.wannasmile.com
I second the notion put forth by “V Racer”
Another case of the press making something that isn’t there. HC never implied that King didn’t do anything, she simply stated fact that the Johnson Administration signed the Civil Rights Act. MLK may have started a movement but LBJ signed it into law.
Second, I am tired of hearing Edwards and Obama talk about “change”. Washington politics are beyond just the President. Whether it’s B Clinton, Bush or whoever it will always be special interests and lobbists. Thats why nothing ever really changes. And Edwards really needs to calm down the “aw shucks I am plain folk” crap. Funny he never did a Pro Bono case and all the millions he made from his “lawsuits” he never gave back to the community. Politicians lie. For votes. For money. For ego.
In 1951 the states ratified the 22nd amendment to the constitution, restricting presidents of the United States to a maximum of two terms of service. The people of this country were concerned about the potential for an imbalance in the separation of powers among the branches of our government. This imbalance could allow the President or executive branch to abuse their power. We have witnessed this in the current Bush administration and I believe it is a direct result of George Bush ascending to the thrown of his father. He has even drawn on many of the resources of his father’s administration. If this is troubling or frightening to you, then please consider what I nightmare it would be to put Bill and Hillary Clinton back in the White House.
The fact is that in 1963, JFK gave his speech in which he introduced civil rights. He was
shot months later, and the flamboyant Johnson became president , he is the one who supported and passed
legislation in 1964 for the civil rights act, and did so very quickly. There were many in
the democratic party (southerns) that no longer supported the party. One Republic, Barry Goldwater of
Az. voted against the Bill. I think it the ones who voted against this bill that should be the
focus. While the biggest part of the job, and the frameworkers of the bill was indeed MLK,
all sorts of people died for the cause (black & white) & the bill made it to the White House.
Let me remind you that the dream began when ROSA PARKS, a woman, refused a bus driver’s order
to move to the back of the bus. With the help of MLK and others, NACCP, they organized a boycott that lasted more than a year. MLK was 26 years old at that time.
All are right, The change took generations. You could claim it went all the way back to emancipation. The fact is it took longer than any one person or persons tenur in the spotlight or in office. I fully support these activist and their work but it took a lot of action from a lot of people. I don’t think Hillary meant anything negative or degrating but I also don’t support her. Regardless of what she meant to begin with she has used it as dirty politics. Of course Obama could come out and say without ambiguity that he was or was not offended instead of taking a back seat and allowing his campaign or supporters do the talking.
Here we go again. Its the Hill-Billy show. The same old machine of yesterday, calling in the chips from JJ. The same old right wing trying to give Hill-Billy a black eye. Thank goodness we are all awake. Hill-Billy has forgoten that many in America remember the pot smoking draft dodger from 96 and the only thing new with them is a fresher paint job. Keep talking Hill-Billy you paint yourselves into the conner once gain.
It is unbelievable how Obama and Edwards are totally manipulating the American country. Edwards is setting it up so he will be Obama’s VP. All these men AFRAID of a female president because when women set out to do something right, they get it accomplished. Hillary should not have to apologize for anything she said about Martin Luther King because she didn’t say anything malicious. Is it not true that if LBJ didn’t sign off on the bill it would not have been passed? Nothing anyone could say can diminish the work of Dr. King. And here is my question since the Obama camp is pulling the race card and twisting it on Hillary? He is not all African American, his mother was white and he was raised by his white maternal grandparents and yet he doesn’t talk about that at all because it is to his advantage to claim his minority side to score the under priviledged card when he had more priviledge than most in this country.
Obama mantra….trying to make guilty to the whole african americans. They are getting forced to run along to select an african american to be their president. They think that this is the oppurtunity.
I would say he will be a good vice president. He could build the momentus for his presidentcy after 8 years. I promise you everybody for the next 50 years you will never see a women president in this country…you are all missing that point. We are lucky that Mrs.Clinton is close to us the african american community. We can wait another 8 yers for a better , experienced Black president.
But to get a women as president….don’t even think for another 100 years for a women president. There is not a single candidate in the near future. We have enough black young people in our democratic wing to be successfull, but not a single women…there with a good shot.
We are here to make history either way…. but we can make history for the next 16 years…how about that. I am excited about that
To John above:
Bob Johnson (the founder of BET) and John Johnson (the founder of Jet and Ebony) are not the same person. Bob Johnson made the comment in question. Bob Johnson, who has done a great deal to advance himself financially but has done little to warrant being viewed as a voice of the Black Community by the media. BET was never anything more than a video channel attempting to masquarade as something more. BET could have and should have been something more. The words and opinions of Bob Johnson are meaningless to the primary race, the country, and to the black community that he does not represent.
By the wy Edwards……he is a fake
It is so sad to see a couple that has worked so hard for indivdual rights of every person be attacked so absurdly by others. The Clintons have been a major stronghold for blacks for two decades. They have never once considered or stated at any time that it was Washington that moved civil rights. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many, many others forced the hand of President Johnson to sign the civil rights act. By the black community’s steady hand and with no doubt caring supportive whites, did Washington finally move on the issue. So King’s dream had started to become a reality by making all the people in D.C. look beyond their own agendas and say, “we need to do something here” and with all the people King brought together, Washington final saw that the Civil Rights Act was a good first step.
This statement is is incorrect:
“First, lets remember that John Johnson, founder of BET, also founder of JET and EBONY magazines, got his big break from former President John Kennedy, who made a few phone calls to make sure that JET & EBONY received advertisment support from the Detroit auto makers for advertisemnt in his magazine targeted to African Americans.”
The founder of Ebony & Jet is the late John H. Johnson.
The founder of BET is Robert “Bob” Johnson.
Two very different men, two very different philosophies apparently!
John H. Johnson leaves a great legacy. Bob Johnson got famous for promoting degrading videos.
When is Hillary going to announce Richardson as her running mate to seal up the latino vote.
I almost forgot. . .
I think all of candidates should move on to something more worthy of discussion as we approach Feb 5th. This line of discussion diminishes them all.
Mr. Ben Johnson delivered a low blow to Senator Obama. He must really think we’re stupid to imply that his statements meant anything other than how they sounded; that Obama was doing drugs while the Clintons were fighting for the issues of African Americans. In fact, his statement evokes thoughts both of jealousy and ignorance. What was Mr. Johnson doing for African Americans while the Clinton’s were working for their causes. I think he was hard at work on his specialty, providing African Americans with dreams of being rappers and hos, misrepresenting the true dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Clinton’s are Clintonizing again. I think it should be a new adjective added to the English language. I can’t believe that a white woman is using race against a black man. Now that’s never happened before. There is nothing they will not do or say to gain power. This is nothing new.
Here they are trying out for another 4 years of leadership by the poll, leasing out to China what isn’t nailed down while he chases all the interns around the White House. How does the title “First Letch” sound to ya? Charming Rogue? You must be joking.
They are the 21st Century cross between the Clantons and the Clampets with a little of the Wizard of Oz thrown in as a distraction.
Tell me, how are they going to make everyone forget the rest of their actions with a roaring economy without Alan Greenspan to play Cyrano?
I am so glad to hear the truth from Edwards about Obama. I have a better respect for him. I still am worried that it took 60 years for Hillary to find her voice.. It must have been lost very deep inside the real Hillary.. I just wonder how long its going to take for her to forget where she put it again…
Lets face it, for obvious reasons “ the for change” guy can’t never be under attack
So, for obvious reasons “ the for change”guy has become the darling of the entire media
after it was announced that Hillary, was the winner in NH.
For obvious reasons some networks were AFRAID, yup, AFRAID to posted it
(I wonder why???)….was CNN AFRAID that he, would called in the tallibans after his lost!!!!
GIME A BREAK, THIS IS NOT, THE PERSON TO LEAD OUR NATION !!!!!
OUR COUNTRY, DESERVES BETTER THAN THAT…. TAKE THAT FOR CHANGE!!!!
MY VOTE IS 4 HILLARY, BECAUSE SHE IS THE BEST & SHE LOVES
THIS COUNTRY
To Tony: While I agree with your claim that the media has taken Hilary’s quote and blown it out of proportion, I think it is a rediculous suggestion that Barack Obama should apologize to her. She is the one who made the statement and took offense when the accusations started flying. She should have clarified that she was making a comparison and should have challenged the media to stop painting her as a racist politian. She should have but she didn’t, so the public backlash is her responsibility, not Obama’s (or Edwards’ - if he really thinks that about Obama, then get out of the race so we can see what a front runner Obama really is).
Time to get rid of the Clinton and Bushes. Canyou imgine 4 years of Hillary as president and Clinton in the background , even George Bush Sr had more tact thant this.
I think the candidates, Republican and Democrat and anyone else in this race, need to concentrate on the concerns of the PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES instead of bickering over who said what and what that person meant. In the long run, who cares and does it affect that persons abilities to do the job?
We are paying more for a gallon of gas than at any other time in history-OVER THREE DOLLARS A GALLON for regular unleaded fuel and almost FOUR DOLLARS A GALLON for diesel!! Medical care and Medical Insurance are out of reach for a large portion of the population. Parents worry when they send the children off to school-hoping they will be out of harms way and not get shot, stabbed, maimed. In most “middle class” families, both parents NEED to work to provide shelter and food for the family.
We are retired full time rv’ers on fixed income. Our dream of seeing this great nation of ours has been stolen from us because of PURE GREED. How DARE our politicians say this economy is improving and strong! They need to come down to the working class level and pay taxes, etc and feed and care for their family, like the great people who support both the rich and the poor.
Furthermore, our country has FIFTY STATES not just the few that seem to set the rules! Everyone,in all 50 states, should have a say in anything that transects our lives. Everyone should be able to educate their children and be able to seek medical attention if needed. No one should live in fear of what others may do if angered.
Unfortunately, a person has to be a multi-millionaire to run for political office, with any hope of succeeding, in our country today. And for all the talk, these people do not care about the people who matter most; THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES.
Thank you for letting me vent and voice concerns
It is so sad that ANYONE in AMERICA still can find a reason to TRUST the CLINTONS. I HAVE A DREAM…..that one day I wake up in a country where the well financed machine candidate is rejected, eliminated and soundly defeated by the voters who see behind THE CLINTON MASK to the empty soul less blood thirty political pragmatic persona. If Obama presents a “Fairy Tale” than Hillary Clinton’s Campaign presents “NIGHTMARE ON MAIN STREET, USA” Hillary Clinton isthe Freddy Kruger of American politics. The real ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM is that if Hillary is the Democratic nominee not only will she alienate Independents and inspire the Republican base to come out against her but there will be a movement within her own party away from her candidacy. DEMOCRATS AGAINST HILLARY CLINTON. Any Republican candidate will gain my vote and the vote of MANY Progressive Democrats. Hillary is neither a feminist or a progressive but rather a vile political opportunist who has the audacity to place her own political ambition over issues of race and gender for which her predecessors fought so valiantly. Hillary uses the FEMINIST & CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENTS as PROPS in her Campaign. THE CLINTONS KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE DOING. They have opened a wound and are baiting OBAMA and his surrogates into overplaying their hand. IOWA & NH presented a unique challenge to the very survival of Hillary”s Presidential ambition with Nevada and South Carolina on the horizon. Hillary cannot gain access to the Whitehouse without women or the Black community. Her campaign had to go negative to survive. The Plan? Undermine Obama’s status with white voters, women and borderline racists. Go after voters on the left side of the Bell Curve.
Barack Hussein Obama….THAT’S HE’S REAL NAME IN CASE, HE FORGOT TO MENTION
IT….. CAN ANY ONE WITH THERE RIGHT MIND TELL ME WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO VOTE
FOR SOMEONE WITH THE NAME HUSSEIN???????
CAN SOME OF THOSE UNEDUCATED IDIOTS WHO FOLLOW HUSSEIN OBAMA
ASK HIM WHAT KIND OF CRISTIAN NAME IS HUSSEIN????????
@ LEAST HILLARY DOESN’T PRETEND TO BE SOME ONE SHE’S NOT!!!!!!!
it is funny how everyone says the Clintons have done so much for the black community. They don’t mention the fact that they have also done so little for the black community and so little for the American people. OH, can some one please tell me when you can get 35 years of experience being a wife and not actually being in “office” for 35 years?
Where is the EXPERIENCE?
John Edwards continues to come across weak and pathetic as the race progresses. Instead of siding with Obama, how about being original and be your own person John? This tag team game just makes Edwards look small and childish. I too believe that this statement by Clinton was blown out of context simply for political gain. Makes you wonder what deceptive tricks they would pull once in office.
The way I understand this, Hillary made a mistake by saying something that could, legitimately, be construed by some to be racist. This happens. But, she should have apologized for that possible interpretation and then moved on. That she instead twisted/spun it into the fault of the Obama campaign’s playing the race card, is, I think, another example that she is a divisive figure in politics. America does not need that. We need a unifying leader.
My new TV is capable of portraying a rich palette of colors, but for some reason, the news seems still to be presented in black and white. I’m left to guess what’s really happening. My guess is this:
Mrs. Clinton’s shortcoming is not racism, but ruthlessness. The MLK remark was intended to diminish Mr. Obama, not the great Dr. King. Some of the negative reaction is legitimate and some is just as unreal, just as calculated as the original remark. The Clintons’ have cynically characterized all of the reaction as the latter type.
Mrs. Clinton is guilty not of racism, but a habit of cynicism that’s been formed by so many years of struggle against some truly nasty, often immoral, sometimes criminal opponents. I want to see and end this harmful cycle. I think Mr. Obama attractive because he refuses to engage in childish bickering. I sincerely hope that he can prove its possible to succeed this way.
DESPERATE JOHN EDWARDS…
Kevin, your an idiot!
And yes she does!!
Edwards is a complete idiot as he has shown since 2003
The name Hussein is harmless. Your interpretation is dangerous.
How about an EDUCATED person not idiot tell you why they would vote for someone named Hussein. First, I don’t think Barack chose his name, second I don’t think there is a definition of a “Christian” name, why do you have to resort to name calling, that makes you look like an idiot. Where you educated beyond elementary school? That’s where the name calling is supposed to end isn’t it? Second, Hillary is all about being someone she isn’t, for instance, she’s not Bill Clinton, or a representative of change, it would be another 4 years of the same old untrue Clinton machine!
Why don’t we get back to the real issues? This arguement is only selling ads for the media.
All of this just proves that no matter who we elect on either side of the spectrum we are in for 4 more years of politics as usual. There is no one currently running who is a mainstream moderate who has a chance of winning and uniting the country. John McCain is the closest, but I don’t think he will get the Republican nod.
Once again we will be left with two bad choices, just as we have had for the past few elections.
Two pionts -
1. Listen to the Clinton comment. I am no Hillary fan, but nothing she said was in-accurate, and she in no way belittled Dr. King. President Johnson had to strong arm congress for the legislation that he did then sign. Dr Kings movement helped make this happen, but it did not need to happen when it did. We can thank President johnson for that.
2. Sen Edwards says he grew up in the segragrated south. This looks like another political exhageration. He graduated college in 1974. I am sure he was exposed to segragration in his much younger years, but his teen and older years were without segregration being the law (it is to the law he was refering to)
Wait a second… Obama should apologize to Clinton?
Regardless of the comment itself, Obama never talked about it until this weekend. I’ve been reading about it from the media and hearing about it on news channels for about a week. That Clinton can blame Obama for the fact that a comment she made is being publicized, and then people can demand Obama apologize for her comment being publicized is ridiculous.
Compared to Hillary and the gender card, Obama has done a great job of avoiding playing the race card (probably not for entirely altruistic reasons, but there aren’t as many blacks as women). What the Clinton camp has successfully done, is plant the idea that Obama is trying to play the race card, and emphasized his race, all by her making a poorly phrased remark. He didn’t take the race bait, but the whole conversation still hurts him. That’s great politics (dirty as hell, but great).
I think the funnier thing is the “fairy tale” Iraq war stuff Bill and Hillary keep spinning. If you go back and read Obama’s 2002 speech, it’s practically prophetic. Then, they claim he says in 2004 that Obama “did not know” how he would have voted in 2002. Unfortunately, again using great politics, they leave out the very next sentence to knowingly distort his statement. I’ll include the full quote and let you make up your minds: “I’m not privy to Senate intelligence reports… What would I have done? I don’t know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made.” Then, they claim that Senator Obama did not vote to cut funding to our troops already there, meaning he supported the war. What’s funnier still is that Hillary voted for those war funding bills too.
Wow, those Clinton’s sure do spin a “fairy tale”
Why do these churches never lose their tax-exempt status? Democrats are always popping up in some Baptist church somewhere to get the black vote.
It’s a sad day when people are upset with Edwards for stating his opinion but give a “hall pass” to the Clintons. They are a “win at any cost” duo and we’ve seen how this movie ends.
Remember the press commenting on Bill’s affailrs was a “vast right wing conspiracy” according to Billary. Nope. Hillary, it was your husband being unfaithful to you.
Remember the “TravelGate” papers just happening to appear in her private office. She knew nothing about that or how they got there. She’s either a liar or she has no control on who comes and goes thorugh government papers and her private office. Scary!
Remember the spontaneous tears in NH, which were immediately gone seconds later when her emotion “dried up” and she got back to her talking points (perhaps the tears were also a talking point).
Remember the failed attempt to ruin health care. She said during one of the debates that Edwards’ attempt to get some legislation done (which did not pass) was not a success. Therefore, her healthcare initiatives must also be a gross-failure.
Remember all the other things; Whitewater, lucrative deals in the futures market. her attacks on women who claimed to have been mistreated sexually by her husband, law-firm papers that were distroyed, depends on the definition of what “is-is,” wagging Bill’s finger “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky,…
Come on. Enough already. There’s no core, no conscience, no authenticity, no basis in truth, no intention to live by the rules we all live by. She is ruthlesss and shameless.
She has said far too many times “during my 35 years of experience.” So, what is that 35 years of experience. What did she do? What did she accomplish? Forget, for the moment, her poor performance as a Senator for the past 6-7 years. Let’s see a list of what was done (not merely discussed) for the 28-29 years prior to that.
She’s poison for America. She has had more “reinventions” that Thomas Edison. She “found her voice” in NH last week. What about the last 35 years?
Why does the press give her such a free ride? Someone should figure this out? Look at the transcript of this AM (January 14) on the Diane Rehm show (NPR Radio). She calls her “Mrs. Clinton” but she calls Barack Obama “Obama.” In her openning comments, she twisted her conversation about race and gender to be completely unfail. It’s not journalism, it’s merely a marketing event for Billary.
Let’s not be pushed around any longer. We all deserve better than Hillary Clinton (whoever she is and whatever she believes).
