Juntos Con Hillary: Clinton Kicks Off Hispanic Outreach
After a swing through Southern California, including a stop at King Taco in East Los Angeles, Hillary Clinton is back in Las Vegas today to kick off her “Juntos Con Hillary, Una Vida Mejor” tour of Nevada. The phrase translates to “Together with Hillary, a better life,” and the tour itself marks yet another attempt to solidify her support among Latino voters in the West.
Clinton kicked things off at the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 88 training center, where she was introduced by Hispanic luminaries such as Sen Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and former HUD secretary (and ex-Bill Richardson supporter) Henry Cisneros — both of whom addressed the packed room in both English and Spanish.
She talked about Richardson in glowing terms in her first public comments since the Latino governor dropped out of the presidential race, saying “Bill Richardson has been a friend of mine for a long time. He is a distinguished, accomplished American public servant.”
“He broke through a barrier by running for president and by being such a tremendous candidate raising important issues for our country,” she said. “I salute his service and thank him for his many kindnesses to me.”
And she stressed the work she’s done on behalf of Hispanics. “I have worked with each of my friends…to try to provide better health care for women, particularly Latina women. To try to cut the dropout rate for Hispanic youngsters. To try to provide better job training opportunities so that anybody willing to work hard can get a job that will give them a shot at a better future,” she said.
(Check out Sen Clinton’s new ad airing in NV and SC, which draws from her victory speech in NH and shows plenty of people of color for the two minority-heavy states.)
Hillary’s support among Hispanics is rock solid; unlike her former strongholds — black voters and women — Barack Obama hasn’t been able to gain a foothold in the demographic. Experts speculate that part of the reason could be racial; the ugly truth is that many Latinos harbor ill-feelings towards African Americans and may have a hard time supporting a black candidate for president.
Sen Clinton isn’t sticking around for the rest of the NV tour; she’ll leave the canvassing and phone banking to her surrogates like LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa while she flies to Reno to address what is the key issue of her Western campaign, the economy. She’s holding a roundtable on the housing crisis at a Mexican restaurant; the campaign is banking on the housing issue resonating with voters in the state with the highest rate of home foreclosures in the country.

Nice ad!
I think Hillary Clinton is probably pretty satisfied with second place in both SC and NV, as long as John Edwards stays in the race as he promised, but remains a distant third.

AND JOB……. IN SOUTH CAROLINA! KEEP IT UP!
Aaron, good story, but that’s just nuts! This is such calculated pandering. Even liberals are not going to like her speaking Spanish (”Latina women” is redundant, btw). She’s talking about Hispanic jobs? What a joke! The whole problem with illegal immigration revolves around Hispanic jobs! The reason illegals come here if for jobs! If there were no jobs they wouldn’t come!
If her position with Hispanic voters is so rock solid why is she doing something that is bound to infuriate the middle class English speakers by campaigning in Spanish? Why pander to Hispanics at the expense of legal Mexican immigrants, blacks and union members who compete directly with illegals for jobs?
I don’t know about Nevada, but she obviously has no idea how much illegal immigration costs Californians, or how angry we are about it. Now polls are putting John McCain ahead nationally? I find that very hard to believe. People here have not forgotten McCain/Kennedy! John McCain is despised for it here. I don’t understand this strategy at all.
It’s still the “I have found my voice” line that bothers me. I write novels, and I’d better know the characters voice before I start writing them. If it only comes to me late in the book, there’s a LOT of rewriting to do, and I’m afraid the characters come off as phony. Why start writing a character ( or why start running for office) if you don’t know the voice to begin with?

Hopefully, voters in Nevada and South Carolina will prove to be as tough and sensible as New Hampshire voters, and that they will choose competence over charisma and action over words.
Hillary has so much experience, it’’s ridiculous:
1970, provided free legal advice to the poor and researched for the Senate Subcommittee on Migratory Labor.
1974, member of the Watergate impeachment staff.
1977, co-founder of the Arkansas Advocate for Children and Families.
1978, board member of the Legal Services Corporation successfully fighting President Reagan’s attempts to reduce funding.
1979, chair of the Rural Health Advisory Committee, successfully expanding health care funding in poor areas of Arkansas.
1982-1992, chair of the Arkansas Educational Association, raising educational standards statewide.
1992-2000. Most important advisor in the White House.
2000-2008. US senator, sits on several important committee.
Meaning Hillary has been a public servant since Obama has been in diapers. He dipped his toe in the Senate, and now a year later he thinks he’s qualified to be President? Really? Change? Change what? Fired up and ready to go…ready to go where? Yes we can…do what? All slogans, no specifics. All words, no actions? All charisma, no competence.
He’s just not qualified to be President, sorry.

That is a great list of accomplishments David! Hillary Clinton has the experience and the know-how to actually change things. Voting PRESENT is not showing change! It is not even showing courage to show what you stand for! I must admit, Obama has a charisma of painting beautiful picture with words, But so are car salesman (I am a car salesman..lol!) That doesnt mean that things will change. Every person that runs for office runs on some form of change, but when someone actually has a record of changing things, that who will get my vote. Go Hillary!!! BTW…King taco is really good. I ate there today..lol!

Oooh! So that’s all the “Experience” I’ve been hearing so much about! A lifetime of political appointeeship!
And that “most important advisor in the White House” line? Well, as someone once told me: “If I’ve been a plumber for 20 years that still doesn’t make my wife a certified plumber.”
The article was interesting and I applaud a healthy political banter. Your objectiveness had me until I read
“Experts speculate that part of the reason could be racial; the ugly truth is that many Latinos harbor ill-feelings towards African Americans and may have a hard time supporting a black candidate for president.”
I read the original article that this came from and you may want to link to your original sources if you are really looking for an impact… otherwise you make yourself look…. well for lack of a better word, racist. If you truly believe a statement like this, then support it with unbiased reports/polls/studies etc.
The Latino’s and African-Americans I know, bear no ill will towards each other and are intelligent enough to look past skin color or cultural background when it comes to moving the great country we live in forward.
People wonder why the rest of the world thinks we are so hypocritical and self serving, we can’t even put “race” aside in order to make America a better place. Remember the melting pot & the land of the free… how about free from racial strife. America has given us all a better life. How about we give each other a little more respect?
sincerely

Go Hillary!!!! Vamos Hillary!!!!
This hispanic community supports you!!!
How dare your blogger reporters make such a sweeping stereotype about racism among Latinos.
What we should be talking about is why everyone is given a free pass to denigrate Hispanics, especially Mexicans.
In any case, it was a ridiculous statement.

Hillary Clinton represents real change. The media loves Obama because he is Hollywood flash, the appearance of change without actual change. He makes a good story without actually doing anything except making people feel good for a couple of seconds. He has done nothing! He has no experience. He obviously is at least as narcissistic as Clinton has been accused of being in the past couple of days. If I am wrong, let him prove himself by sticking around and changing America as a Senator for a few more years.
Clinton was the first to take on UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE! That took courage. The forces against her were great, and her plans failed, but she has learned from her experience. She tried to create CHANGE before it was a campaign slogan. Obama has not proven this courage, and lacks the experience. If Clinton fought for such dramatic change as first lady, what will she do as the first female president of the U.S.? Every race knows the power and strength of a good woman. Hillary for president!! IF I am wrong about Obama, my apologies, and he will prove it in 4 or 8 years.
Hillary herself has asked us to look at her past to see what she can deliver in the future. Well, when I look into her past I see a First Lady who tried to reform health care in this country and failed miserably. And there is no reason to believe she will be any more successful this time around.
When I look into the Clinton past I see 8 years of scandal and investigations. For the last 15 years, our presidents - Bush and Clinton - have been held up for ridicule by the entire world. The last thing I want in my future is the Clintons’ past. There’s no way that Bill Clinton will be able to remain discreet enough to escape the tabloids for 4 whole years. And there is no way Hillary Clinton will not be distracted by the world press exposing her husband’s indiscretions for everyone to see. We need a president who will be able to devote the necessary time to all of our country’s enormous problems, not one who has to worry about which intern her husband is chasing.
Hillary also says she is a doer, not a talker. Well, after multiple terms in the Arkansas Governor’s mansion, the Clintons left the state ranked 49 out of 50 states in education - both in dollars per student and test scores. If they couldn’t do better than that after several years in one not overly populated state, there is no way they will be able to address the dismal state of our entire country’s educational system.
There is one thing that Hillary Clinton managed to do almost singlehandedly during her time in the White House. She alienated almost every single Republican in Congress. This is why Bush was able to win by pronouncing himself a “unifier”. She is the most polarizing candidate in the entire field. There have always been fundamental differences between Democrats and Republicans, but never have party lines been drawn so fiercely as since Hillary Clinton tried to force everyone to do things her way. In order to pass major legislation like health care reform, or stimulation packages for the economy, she would need to garner the support of most of the Republicans she alienated when her husband was President. Now, that’s a fairy tale.
Oh yeah, that whole experience thing? Obama has more years of experience as an elected official than Hillary Clinton has. The fact is, if Hillary had not been married to a former President, she would never have had the clout to become a Senator in New York and no one would be taking her seriously as presidential candidate today. All she’s been doing is coasting on her husband’s coattails - which is probably why she has put up with all the humiliation he’s caused her over the years. It’s the legal contract version of sleeping your way up the ladder. IMO, marrying your way up is not any better. As a woman, that is exactly the type of behavior I abhor. There is nothing whatsoever in her experience that makes her a fitting candidate for President, only things that make me dread having the two of them in the White House again. Please, can we try - for the first time in 16 years - to elect a president with at least a little moral fiber?
Everybody takes Hispanics for granted except Hillary Clinton. She has supported us from the very beginning and it’s an honest and since concern for our best interests. I am tired of people taking us for granted. It is time to support the one candidate who has been behind us all the way. Go Hillary!
Amando Alvarez
You know, Tony Robbins really gets me energized and pumped up when I hear him speak. Since that seems to be enough to qualify him as a viable presidential candidate, why don’t we nominate him!!
Sra Clinton,
ARRIBA SRA CLINTON
Smart move by Hillary.
