One thing Huckabee said that I resonated with is that their are so many poeple in jail today. More than 80% of them are encarserated because of a drugs or alcohol related crime. When he said that I knew he understood something that is very basic but know one talks about. Whether you think they should be in jail or not the facts are that we have a real problem in this country. Without understanding that most of our societal problems stem from drugs and alcohol how are you going to solve those problems. I believe this is what is causing the break down of the family, and the economy to a small degree. Tax payers have to not only pay their room and board, they have to pay for thier medical, kids, property damage, unpaid bills, and the list goes on and on. Now if you are familiar with substance abuse you would know that it is an extremely complex issue. The only real way to deal with these people to keep it from happening again is to either put them in jail or get them when they are young. Dare programs and others are not explaining the longterm affects well enough for kids to relate. Dare is a joke, nothing of what they told me when I was a could influenced my behavior. I made mistakes but luckily I had good folks to keep me on the straight and narrow. Others are not that fortunate. If the public schools think the dare program makes a difference then they are fooling themselves. They need to talk about the chemical changes that occur in the brain, and how it can effect their family life. This is especially good for those kids that are already in broken homes. If they can begin to understand that what happens at home is not normal maybe they will strive to not repeat their parents mistakes. Sorry that was a huge tangent. But even though Huckabee believes the earth is only 6000 years old, his comments about drugs and alcohol shows that he at least realizes what is at the core of why this country faces problems.

The reason why we have so many people in jail on drug offenses is because back in the 80’s politicians tried to prove they were the ‘Toughest On Crime’ (TM) by passing ever more punative laws. ‘Zero Tolerance’ replace proportionate sentencing, and judges were reduced to arbiters of mandatory sentences. Of course it helped that these laws took a disproportionate impact on scary black people rather than white suburban conservative voters. Unfortunately, long after these politicians left office we’re left with these excessive laws on the books. Only now have the courts begun to undo the damage.
Now the topic used to scare people to the polls is illegal immigration. We’ve replaced scary black people with scary brown people. I can only imagine the havoc the ‘anti-amnesty fence-builder send’em-all-back’ pols will inflict on the economy. Perhaps we can replace all the migrant workers with former crack dealers.

Mr. Giuliani, please try and change your speech to not include Ronald Reagan. Like our children who were teenagers and younger during the Ronald Reagan years, they cannot relate to this. You have many voters in their twenties who cannot relate to the Ronald Reagan years. The parents can, but the children cannot. I think you would be a great president, but our children and there friends have said many times over, they cannot relate since you keep mentioning bringing back Ronald Reagan system of government, etc. You would be President, not Ronald Reagan, so please I ask your speech writers to take out the mention of Ronald Reagan and talk about YOU and what your administration would do.

The references to Reagan are appropriate for a simple reason; voting percentages among older Americans, especially in the primaries, is far higher among people old enough to remember Regan than those that are not (Heck, I data back to Goldwater; I was there for the birth of dirt.). The only ones younger people would relate to are the Bushes and that just doesn’t sell right now.

Problem for Rudy is, Reagan appealed to social conservatives as well as military and fiscal conservatives; Rudy does not. In fact there is only one candidate in the race who can appeal to all three; Fred Thompson. But Fred’s going to have to build momentum big time from his debate win last night (and a double barrelled win it was)if he’s going to have a shot.

Rudy is the best choice for us. And yes he is a fiscal conservative. Not only that he has proven he can reduce crime, reduce welfare fraud, reduce taxes and create jobs. This is what this country needs. A strong Leader who actually has a plan and just not more words.
