Edwards Places Second in Iowa
Presidential hopeful John Edwards placed second in Iowa—a state where he had invested much time, visiting all 99 counties twice in his bid for the presidency.
With 99 percent of the precincts reporting Thursday evening, Barack Obama had 38 percent of the vote while John Edwards had 30 percent and Hillary Clinton had 29 percent.
“The status quo lost and change won,” Edwards said to supporters at the Renaissance Savery Hotel in downtown Des Moines following news of Obama’s victory. He restated his populist message of ending corporate greed and fighting for the middle class, and added that “this march of change continues on.”
The senator also said that a candidate’s message meant more to voters than the amount of money he or she has raised. “We saw two candidates who thought their money would make them inevitable,” he said—alluding to rivals Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney.
Elizabeth Edwards echoed her husband’s sentiments. She called him a “messenger of change” and said that “despite the fact that he was outspent 6 to 2, that message still got through.”
As he left the stage, Edwards shouted, “there is an energy and momentum behind this campaign that cannot be stopped,” which prompted chants of “Go John Go!” from supporters.

John Edwards speech tonight was incredible. The fact that he accepts zero money from big business for his campaign is incredible.
As a nurse years ago I heard Edwards plan for universal healthcare and agreed with him.He was the first candidate that stated a specific healthcare plan that was feasible.
Edwards has the charisma, the actions, the winning record as a litigator.
He has experience as senator, the experience as 2004 VP candidate and what’s more he has the proven record of putting money in American pockets.
Economically, globally we are losing and that needs to stop.America needs John Edwards as President.
“6 to 2″
Is that more than 3 to 1 ?
2nd place is great, considering it is only the beginning of the year and the first poll. Edwards is a front runner and has a great chance of being the nominated. I am as glad for him as I am glad Clinton came in 3rd.
John Edwards looked presidential and struck a chord tonight. His speech was anything but canned and seemed to eminate directly from his soul. In today’s world, where carefully orchestrated rhetoric prevails, he is a breath of fresh air! A throw back to a bygone era, unadulterated by lobbyists, metrics and polls. A time where people actually believed in principles and true values and said what was on their minds, rather than just parroting the slogan du jour. I hope he takes today’s momentum all the way to the nomination and eventual presidency. He’d certainly be a breath of fresh air and would be able to bring this country back to the values that made us the strongest and most powerful nation on earth.

Iowa has shown us that the American people can see through the Clintons’ 2-for-1 strategy, which we first heard from Bill back in 1992. At President Bush’s first inauguration, Bill said, “We’ll be back.” It’s part of Bill and Hillary’s life-long plan. Fortunately, it’s been rejected, and we can only hope the rest of the country follows suit.
I did not ask for 2-for-1 then, nor do I ask for it now. That’s just the life-long Clinton strategy that moves Hillary into a position for which she is not qualified.
Every time Bill moves up (Gov of Arkansas), Hillary moves up with him (Attorney General of Arkansas). Bill moves up again (President of the US); Hillary moves up with him (US Senate). See the pattern, women?
Consider what America got with the first Clinton co-Presidency:
• Abuse of the powers of the office of the President
• Granting Presidential pardons to buy Hillary’s election to the Senate. As a woman who made it on my own, Hillary’s need to ride Bill’s coattails and her sense of entitlement (as in “it’s my turn and Obama should wait his turn”) makes me doubt her capabilities.
• Hillary’s long-suffering marriage to Bill, enabling a lifetime of sexual trysts and trying to contain the Bimbo eruptions, gives me a President without the backbone to stand up to a man. Hillary claims to be tough enough to play with the boys when, in fact, she is unable to leave a cheating husband. How will she stand up to other male leaders who see this in “Mrs.” Clinton and walk all over her?
• Being married to a former President does not make one qualified to be President.
Hillary has less experience in elected office than Barack. She’s held elected office for one Senate term plus one year and has introduced no major legislation during that time. She showed us in the interview about Pakistani elections the extent of her foreign policy experience–she did not know what office the election was for or who was on the ballot! Is this the kind of experience we want in the Oval Office?
I am not a “Hillary hater;” I am an America lover. Please consider very carefully which candidate the Democratic Party puts on the ballot. The future of this country absolutely depends on it.
why is it that even though edwards came in 2nd place, most of the media is still only talking about (or at least focusing on) obama/clinton? i know that it’s news that obama won, and i know that it’s worth mentioning that clinton lost after being the front runner, but it almost seems like edwards is being, well, ignored would be too strong of a word, but at least being brushed off.
i mean, i know his message is more anti-corporate than the the others and that the media is owned by those same corporate interests, but COME ON!
Greta sent me from Gretawire!
Keep the info coming. I will be sure to follow as I want to make an informed decision in our primary and subsequenty in the election.
Thank you.
John Edwards’ speech was EXACTLY what I was waiting to hear from someone.
I am registered republican, but don’t recognize my party anymore. Our country has been taken over by big business, and I see no great benefits that this fact has brought to me as an average citizen—since I am not in the top 1%, or even in the 16% making more than $97,000 per year.
I can no longer listen to the Republican shock jocks, who follow the “party” blindly into the river—like the mice and the pied piper !
I have a brain, and eyes, and I can hear and see the danger- and it is in the form of big business out of control.
And they do it with high interest charge cards, high gas and oil prices, preditory mortgage loans, and denial of services in our healthcare. They talk us into expensive medications we don’t need, and use our trusted physicians to deal them to us. They have lead us into terrible debt at such high interest that few can afford to take a day off to care for a sick family member or aging parent, or would dare to!
We all have a right to the American dream, however we see that dream, and I see mine slipping away.
I don’t want to be owned by a bank! I want to live free.
I don’t want to freeze in the winter or send my son or daughter- or my neighbor’s child into harm’s way so someone else can move from rank of millionnaire to billionnaire.
I don’t want to put my retirement money into the stock market so swindlers can steal it from me.
I don’t want to be killed off by an insurance company so stockholders can make a profit on my death.
I have decided to support John Edwards for president. I love his insight and his resolve.
Oh and by the way—- Greta sent me !
It’s time we hear more about John Edwards. I agree, he placed 2nd and there is hardly a word about that. Just that Obama/Clinton are strategizing for New Hampshire. Give credit where credit is due. He was outspent by the other 2 candidates and came in a nice 2nd. It’s time the media focused more on him. Media DOES influence voters and ignoring the 2nd place finish is not right. That hasn’t happened with the 2nd place Republican finish in Iowa.
I support Edwards. I was very encouraged by his speech after the Iowa finish and inspired that he is bringing hope and some plans to help out the middle-class.
I like him. He just continues with balance and grace. Don’t like his wealth or his personal injury experience. But he is better than all the other dems, including Mr. “I’m so fresh” Obama.
I too WAS a Republican. Tired of their big business nonsense. We are living in cold homes because we cannot afford heat. We cannot afford to drive to work due to gas prices. We have mortgages that are in disaster. Why would any of us vote Republican? But just voting Democratic isn’t enough. Our family laughs at the Clintons. The poster candidates of big business corruption themselves. The side of experienc we would never want back again. A type of monarchy that we do not need again.
Many are small guys out here are suffering due to big business. Edwards needs to be heard more from because he understands. He is the only candidate that makes sense. I will vote Edwards and that is what Iowa brought to me. I am a conservative too, but want more than a Baptist charasmatic person in the White House. Mr. Huckabee ought to go back to preaching. That was his calling in life and he needs to stay there. Obama is just on a ride. He is NOT who we need as a President. He thinks and acts like Mr. King himself. I wish America would stop being fooled by emotion and it’s delivery in a speech. I wish America would stop being fooled by charisma and it’s bid for power. I wish America would see true and pure leadership desires and honest concern for the millions out here suffering. Where are those real leaders? Edwards is close.
we poor folks in mississippi, need joh edwards the present folks in office is putting us in a third world spot.
s a law student at USC in California, I was a registered libertarian. After consideralble study re. what approaches “Utopian” political philosophy, we have concluded–Communism & Libertarianism looks good on paper , tied up in a nice bow. But there is a flaw. Both philosophies refuse to acknowledge reality; on the one hand there is a refusal to admit selfishness and greed, on the other hand is the refusal to admit Power corrupts & apsolute power corrupts absolutely. Power begets hunger for more power.
Edwards was right in calling the “big drug corporations” the enemy. Listen up. Free Entreprise if absolute is too simplistic. Free Enterprise can work if anti-monopoly, anti-trust laws were enforced. Atlas Shrugged by Rand is a great lesson in the dangers of big government, et. al. But Rupert Murdock has NOT been stopped, wouldn’t you say? The Big corporations are the Achilles heel of purist Free Enterprise. John Burcher philosophy remains rampant in Mormon church .
I think Edwards has got it right. You should recognize the flaw of too “pat” answer to USA. I am no longer a Libertarian, but neither Clinton nor “W” have leaned on the monopolies in this country. There are too many loop holes. . . just like the IRS
EDWARDS PROBABLY WON’T WIN, BUT I WILL VOTE FOR HIM. CLINTON WAS THE FIRST ONE TO GET CAUGHT PAYING BIG BUCKS FOR HIS HAIRCUT.
The thing I find dispicable about the Clintonsk, was not just the woman chasing–it was that he chose women who had no credibility to defend themselves. My husband & I met while working McClean , Va . and D. C. Believe me when I tell you, Clinton had security information on Monique, every woman in any hotel, any women who might work in any building he was in. He picked and chose women he could ruin, who had no power. Hillary is just as bad for she supported him in it and the two of them used creulty to “lean on” any victim who might come forward and make trouble. Hillary is no fine damsel. She is a Bully. Bill Clinton was even worse.
