Romney Congratulates Huckabee
West Des Moines, IA—
Governor Romney took the stage and congratulated Mike Huckabee “for winning the gold” in the Iowa caucuses. Romney said it isn’t over, using the Olympic metaphors that he is fond of:
“Just because you won the silver in one event doesn’t mean you won’t come back and win the gold in the final event.”
He went on to say when he started he was an unknown from the “bluest state in America” when he was battling against three “household names”: Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, and Fred Thompson- and the presidential hopeful said he is encouraged that he beat all three tonight.
Romney also said that Barack Obama’s win here along with Huckabee and his own second place showing expresses that America wants change in the government:
“You are going to see change in Washington because America recognized that we are not going to change the nation and have a bright future if we send the same people back to Washington in different chairs. We need new faces in Washington and I expect to be one of them.”
This is the spin the campaign is also selling saying they are “heartened” by Obama’s win in the Democratic caucus here because it shows that America wants something different.
Governor Romney, his staff, and the press are scheduled to fly within the hour to the first primary state of New Hampshire–Romney’s next battle for the nomination.

A Vote for Huckabee is a vote for Obama/Clinton. Huckabee cannot win the Presidency. You Evangelicals keep voting for him but please no crying when Hilary is in the Oval Office. He even allienates his fellow Republicans (Mormons). Maybe one day they’ll wisen up and join the Dems. Then again … Iowa GOP … you voted Democrat tonight. Congrats.
The GOP has been absolutely destroyed with this liberal, tax increasing, pardon granting, taking the high road then still going negative pastor. As a Christian, I am disgusted by his politicizing of my Lord and Saviour and think that this country is worse off for it. The man is dishonest, ethically challenged and will ruin this country by allowing Obama/Clinton to be elected.
These so called evangelical christians amaze me. They have voted against Romney not necessarily for Huckabee. They know he can’t win the nomination nor beat the dems. Who cares if he’s a likeable guy. WHAT CAN HE DO>>>>WHAT HAS HE DONE>>>>YOU KNOW…..SUBSTANCE. He still hasn’t “set the record straight” concerning the issues brought up in the CONTRAST ADDS. If Huckabee thinks he’s being attacked ….does the shoe fit??? The truth hurts. Compare his resume to Mitt’s. Any objective observer would rather have the economic fate of the country in Mitt’s hands. He’s spoken strongly on the war and jihadism. He covers all the bases, and has a record of accomplishment. I ask what is his motivation for running. He’s wealthy….not money. Don’t think it’s ego….nope. Maybe because he wants to make America better for his kids and grandkids just like he says. Oh but he’s dishonest …I forgot. He could do whatever he wants but he is subjecting himself to the whole process and WHY? We trust him to showcase the U.S. to the world during the Olympics but no he’s not good enough for the Presidency. NO ONE DENIES HIS COMPETENCE. But I guess he can’t pick a guitar and say those little one liners. What about substance!!! Look at his family. I submit that being a successful father is harder than doing well at anything else. One other thing. If Huckabee gets the nomination he’ll be relying on some mormons to protect him as secret service agents. Didn’t know that did you. Funny how people like the fruits (integrity) of the mormon people on the whole but hate that darn tree (the church).
Parker, Parker, Parker…I’ve seen tens if not hundreds of posts with the same ridiculous implications yours does. “A vote for Huckabee is a vote for the Dems.”
I’m sure comments such as these DO mislead some, but I have a hard time believing that a rational, free-thinking American would be persuaded by these absurd allegations.
Here’s why:
We can all agree that you fall under one of two catagories. You’re either a Democrat, or a supporter/employee of an opposing Republican candidate.
1.) As a Dem, it would be utterly preposterous for you to try and persuade voters NOT to vote for Huckabee in the primaries. That is…if in fact you believe Huckabee doesn’t stand a chance to win the presidency. You would have to be delirious not to hope for a shoe-in like Huckabee (as you have suggested).
2.) As a supporter of a competing Republican candidate (i.e Romney), I can see how this post might serve a purpose, distorted as it may be. If you can convince the Republican voters that Huckabee doesn’t stand a chance, your candidate just might.
In summary, your post is misleading either way you look at it. You sir, are obviously a Democrat who is more than aware of the threat that Huckabee would pose to your party’s Presidential nomination, or you are part of a Republican campaign to curtail the governor’s growing surge in popularity in the primaries…you pick.
[...] Romney Congratulates Huckabee Fred Thompson [...]
Andrew… I am actually a Mormon Republican. And if Huckabee were to win the nomination… I like many Mormons would be in a quandary. Heaven forbid it be Hillary and Huckabee. I will tell you this, if Huckabee wins you will see many Mormons(Utah is the most Republican state in the union) vote Independent or Democrat. I trust Obama more than I trust Huckabee. Listening to talk radio here in Utah today you’d see that I am not alone in my thinking. Even the most staunch Mormon Republicans are feeling the same… Huckabee is a divider and it’s only the beginning of the race.
As a Mormon I’m not necessarily voting for Romney. Yes he is my choice. But if he doesn’t get the nomination I would vote for any Republican candidate other than Huckabee. I think a lot of people feel this way and I think the main stream Republican party knows that. That’s why I think that Huckabee has had his day and will slowly fade to the back. All I’m saying is that he is the worst choice for a strong Republican party. We will not have a unified party if he’s the nominee. Bottom Line.
I will cross party lines and vote DEM if Huckabee is the nominee, although I have no doubt he will be eclipsed in all but the most staunch evangelical states. This is not my GOP. The party doesn’t even like Huckabee. This is pretty low-brow politicking.
Andrew,
I have to respectfully disagree with you. In full disclosure - I am a Romney supporter. I’ve witnessed multiple political analysts (those who devote their lives and professions to the study of these elections) sheepishly admit that Mike Huckabee CANNOT win the Republican nominee. In fact, many Democratic analysts will go as far as to say outright, “Yes, we would love Huckabee as the nominee.” A female analyst said this very thing on causus night off all nights.
Huckabee won in Iowa for one simple reason - 60%, my gosh, 60% of the causus goers were Evangelical Christians!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t have anything against E.C., but they simply voted for their religion and largely ignored the issues that will affect us all, not just them in Iowa. It has been said time and time again, but I think it warrants repetition - Huckabee, and McCain for that matter, have not denied any of the comparisons Romney made in his advertisements - NONE. They respond simply by calling Romney dishonest and “shady.” And on the note of advertisements, Huckabee and McCain will not receive the same “pillow fight” treatment they saw in Iowa. The people of New Hampshire not only accept such advertisements, but encourage them. Imagine that, they actually want to see comparisons between the candidates on important issues such as immigration, taxes, commutations, etc.
The Iowans certainly have their right to vote the way they feel appropriate. I just wish they would have invested more effort into actually getting to know the candidates, instead of seeing the word, “Mormon” in neon lights next to Romney’s name.
Andrew, I do respect your post and your point of view, but again, I respectfully disagree with it.
P.S. Our country is entering, or has already entered (some analysts say) a recession. This is an
extremely important issue for all of us. There is no question, and I think even Romney’s
harshest critics would agree, that Mitt Romney is hands down the most intelligent, experienced,
etc., etc., man regarding the economy and managing large amounts of money.
If anyone has seen any of my posts, I am obviously not a Huckabee supporter. I have seen a lot of pro-Huckabee posts that tell all to find out the truth at mikehuckabee.com. This made me laugh since no candidate is going to point out there own faults. I have gone to the site to see what Huckabee says about the negative things said about him. Obviously it is the exact opposite of what other people are saying about him. So hey, why not do my own research. Good idea, right? Well not so good if you are a Huckabee supporter. One of my main concerns about Huckabee is his battle with the Ethics board. His site, under the link “Truth Squad: Ethics” says, “The overwhelming majority of ethics complaints filed against Governor Huckabee in the state of Arkansas were regularly dismissed and / or proven to be frivolous.” I checked to see if this was true. A majority of them have been thrown out, but not ALL. I find it disturbing that the EVANGELICAL RIGHT voted for a man who had, by his own admission, ethics issues. He never said all of them were thrown out. I wanted to know what wasn’t thrown out. I wanted to know in what areas he had ethics issues. I would suggest that all others do the same. He also tried to get a statute of limitations on ethics issues? Why would he do this. If he had so many issues with ethics why is anyone voting for him? That is a legitimate question. I would like an answer. I assume the answer will be that he will get rid of the IRS. I have done my research there too. It won’t happen. It isn’t possible. Even if the Fair Tax was possible, which i doubt it is, the IRS must still exist to collect that tax. SO why, why is the RIGHT voting for a man that doesn’t have a fiscal conservative record? Why is the right voting for a man that has ethics issues? Can some one answer this?
This is interesting…no disagreement here.
In fact if you look closely, the last four posts unanimously reinforce my previous supposition. Nowhere in my original post did I state that Huckabee was a strong contender for the presidential race (although I DO think it’s clear that he is). My point was speaking to something of a more dubious nature.
As some of you candidly pointed out, your support goes to Romney in the primaries. The original post from Parker indicates that he is a Democrat. Both positions deserve a bit of scrutiny.
Let’s assume for a minute that a Huckabee nomination would lead many Mormons (as these posts have suggested) to “cross party lines and vote DEM,” consequentially losing the election for the GOP. This being the case, why in America would a Democrat (Parker) try and convince voters not to vote for Huckabee in the primaries? I think you can agree with me that this question raises more than some suspicion.
Now, let’s assume that Parker was not in fact a DEM, but a Romney supporter such as you. Of course his candidate would benefit from convincing voters that by supporting Huckabee they were helping out the DEMS. I am in no way surprised by these responses to my initial post. Honestly, it’s exactly what I would have expected…
I urge my fellow Americans to look beneath the surface. Research. Process. Think for yourselves.
P.S. In direct response to the last post (which was very deceptive and misleading): Huckabee has very articulately addressed everything Mitt has thrown at him. I can only assume that your sources have been limited to your candidate’s campaign and those spiteful little ads. This link might provide you with a bit of enlightenment…if not a bit of conviction: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VKYSyIVVCJk
***Correction***My previous response was in regards to the four comments before Ike’s.
So why don’t you respond to Ike’s post? I don’t feel that I am being deceptive at all. I really want an actual answer to the ethics issues that Huckabee has ignored. Saying that most of the allegations isn’t the same as ALL of the allegations. My information did not come from any candidate trying to malign Huckabee. It came from News agencies, several of them, truth watch, and others. I am not trying to attack Huckabee. I want to get an answer. One thing I don’t ever seem to find. How can someone support Huckabee when he has Ethical issues. And if someone believes he doesn’t, can I please get a real reason for why that is. Thank you
Ike,
Your comment hadn’t been posted when I had begun writing mine. Nothing in my last response was in reference to your post. Sorry for the confusion.
To answer your question, the ethics complaints that have been raised have to do with the governor accepting gifts. Governor Huckabee addressed this issue somewhere (I can’t give a link off the top of my head, but I’m sure you could find it with a simple Google search). None of the allegations stuck, and most were brought to light by staunch Huckabee haters (DEMS who lost their jobs in the Arkansas government). Honestly, if these so called “ethics issues” could hold water, don’t you think they’d be all over the mainstream press? Just a thought.
I did google it. Not once has Huckabee ever claimed that ALL of the ethics issues were dismissed. He ranted and raved about how people were just attacking him and MOST of the ethics were frivolous and it was despicable that people try to attack him. I agree that politics is dirty. I dont’ think it should be. Huckabee was fined. It was in the news. Look at politico.com or the washington post or fox news. All have reported on it. It just hasn’t been on TV. Here is just a sampler from Politico, ”
The ethics commission fined Huckabee $1,000 for failing to report that he paid himself $14,000 from his 1992 U.S. Senate campaign and $43,000 from his 1994 lieutenant governor’s campaign.”
Can anyone answer this, other than, I think Huckabee said something once about it from somewhere?
RODNEY:
You don’t get it. The Morman church has many good people. A bodyguard is not a President. What is true, is that American does not want a cult Morman in the highest office in the USA. We may not even want a Baptist. But what is true is that we do not want a Morman influence in the White House with character building cult like traits that could not possibly be shed just because someone becomes President. You ought to talk to to a few non-Mormans in Utah. It is almost a Mafia presence there controlling way to much for the general population’s comfort.
Unfortunately Romney’s free selection of his beliefs will hurt him and rightfully so. This country was built on the true concepts of the Bible as very evidenced by our founding Fathers. If you read your history, they (founding fathers) condemned the then “Reformation” church called Morman and now which very disceptively claims itself to be “Christian”, a claim that couldn’t be farther from the truth and for which is deception in it’s finest Morman flavor. They are a cult. They claim they believe in Jesus… .and they do, as the first spiritually born God on this earth. They also believe that all of them, physical spiritual born decendants of Jesus, can reach this same God status by living right! A blashmeny in it’s most disgusting form. I do not want a President that thinks of himself in a way that he could reach God like status! He has the absolute right to be a Morman. We have the right to know and express our opinions about his faith, not condemn his right to run freely for President, but rather understand his faith and not choose a man that is tied up and held high by one of the most demonic churches in America whose very deceptive belief system will affect every decision he makes.
Demi,
One comment…yeah most cults I know devote thousands of man hours to giving service and humanitarian aid around the world as well as hundreds of millions of dollars. That darn fruit thing again!!!! Also, I said IF Huckabee were president (not going to happen) he would be in the company of and protected by the secret service, some members happen to be mormon. This isn’t a reference to a mormon’s capabilities and the public’s trust in them to be in the secret service rather a comment on the fact that Huckabee would be protected by mormons. Don’t think their mormonism would offend HIM then. If mormonism is such an evil, blaspheming, insidious, devilish cult then shouldn’t the general public be able to discern that for themselves. Or do those bigots out there need to continue to think it’s there duty to spell it out for the public whose intelligence they insult. You know….once again by their fruits. This isn’t exclusively a religious principle by the way. If people are bad the true colors come out. No skeletons in his closet. Under your argument…good mormon should be an oxymoron. Right? Can’t have it both ways. To see a guy like Romney who has raised a great family and has many great accomplishments attacked on his character is crazy. You can’t acknowledge on the one hand that Romney does have a great family and has been a great father, and has accomplished great things but yet he is dishonest and has no moral compass and belongs to an evil cult. You can’t divorce the two, they are mutually exclusive. If he’s evil..he’s evil. If he’s a good honest man then I ask again, what is his motive for running? Not to pay the bills. He never took a dime from MA for his salary. He has the competence…no one denies that. There’s always a motive for behavior. If it is other than making the country better for his kids and grandkids lets find out what it is.
On the christian issue. If Jesus Christ himself came down right now and observed how Christians treat each other he would have to conclude he’s not christian either. If mormons are wrong then shouldn’t others endeavor to reclaim them in a little different fashion than you just did. Or is this a “break ‘em down before you build them up” strategy???
[...] Huckabee, but I hope that deep down in his caffeine-free, plastic soul, he’s salty as hell. Good. Some of you were joined by people from all over the country that came in to help us in this [...]
Huckabee is a GREAT candidate. It seems AMAZING that he won Iowa considering the fact that he was an UNKNOWN who was outspent FIFTEEN TO ONE. There are REASONS, however, why this happened and only ONE of them is the fact that he was a ” christian candidate” in a state with many Christian voters. The far more important reasons are these: First, he is a “heart and soul” conservative who has demonstrated as much ALL HIS LIFE. Second, he is VERY likable with a great sense of humor. Third, he is VERY authentic and believable - you get the VERY distinct feeling that he is speaking from his heart and not from a list of “talking points” put together by his campaign committee. Fourth, he is a GREAT COMMUNICATOR. Although Obama can give a great SPEECH Huckabee’s OVERALL communication skills are EVEN BETTER I could go on and on but suffice it to say that Mike Huckabee is the ONE republican candidate who has what it takes to go head to head with his democratic counterpart in the fall and WIN the Presidency for the republican party in the fall!
To the Evangelical, born again Christen conservatives who vote on the grounds of a “shared value system of religious belief”: Greetings from a brother in Christ who is a Mormon!
This is an offering of religious perspective as it relates to this political thread. See if we agree and as a result can help soften the anti-Mormon perspective.
I believe there is a common level of spirituality and devotion, which we share. You and I have been taught that God is no respecter of persons.
From the New Testament:
“Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons”. (Acts 10: 34).
Paul offered similar council;
“For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. (Rom. 10: 12)
Both my wife and I are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. We call upon our Father in Heaven in the name of Jesus Christ in our daily prayers. We love Him. Our devotion to the Savior’s teachings, our faith in His grace and willingness to hear and answer our prayers has fostered a sacred trust in Him.
Here’s why;
We are the parents of four children. The two oldest are now married and starting productive lives and families of their own, full of hope and dreams. Only a parent can relate to the gratitude my wife and I feel for our answered prayers in their behalf.
Our two youngest are invalids and will always remain here in our home under our care.
The youngest, Makenna Jo, is also medically fragile and requires around the clock attention.
How many prayers have we offered and how many blessings received . . . how many miracles witnessed.
We Mormons, (just like you of other faiths who question and ask us with sincere interest and concern), do have a testimony Jesus. It is alive, dynamic and most satisfying. We have answers to our prayers that give us guidance, direction and when needed, comfort for our wounded hearts. He is the Son of God and the Savior of our eternal souls. Of course, He is our personal Savior.
Mormons say the same thing as you do regarding the need to receive Jesus as your personal Savior. We use the same words. But the Evangelical pulpits declare Mormons “mean something very different”. No that is not the case. We mean exactly the same thing and offer our own experiences and testimonies, (as faith based evidence), of our devotion to Jesus Christ.
However, there is a theological difference which may be at the core of your issue with Mormons. But it doesn’t have to be a division amongst us. We are all true believers.
True, we do not believe in the Holy Trinity, (first defined in the Nicene Creed of a.d. 325) *, as a definition of what God is, but we do share the same belief of who God is ! And that, I would suggest, is our common ground of global Judaic/Christen testimony and experience.
Why believe the bitter fruit offered by those who warn from the pulpit by quoting the scripture;
“As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed”. (Galatians 1:9).
The Mormon church is not accursed. Those who believe in and practice the doctrines of the Mormon church are not accursed. I have never felt accursed.
To those who may say, looking at our two handicapped children, that perhaps you are accursed and you simply don’t see that you are misguided and have lost God. I say it is because of this trial that I have found God. I have found Him in my Mormon Sacrament meetings while partaking of the Bread and Water. I have found Him as I worshiped and pondered in the Mormon Temples and most importantly and personally I have found Him to be loving and comforting to me in the late night hours, on my knees pleading that my wife may have strength and my children health.
Choose whoever you want for president based on what they stand for and the good that they have done. That’s the harsh comparative process of the political campaign. But to exclude a candidate because of religious bigotry or the inflammatory half-truths preached, implied or whispered from the pulpit is wrong. It’s this same social oppression of the 1600’s. Our religious forefathers sought to escape from this by coming to this continent and establishing a land of freedom. Romney’s “Faith in America” (**), speech should be listened to one more time before you write him off because he’s a Mormon.
In closing, I return to my opening statement with this addition to make my point;
Mitt Romney was pronounced dead at the seen of a head on traffic accident while serving as a young missionary in France. Ann Romney has Multiple Sclerosis. Yet they seem to be in good health. I believe there is a common ground of spirituality and devotion, which you and I, from different denominations share. And let that be enough in this public forum of politics.
God is no respecter of persons. Any man of piety who was a patriot was good enough for Samuel Adams and deserves our consideration based not upon his religion but his character.

Taken from http://www.lds.org
In the year a.d. 325 the Ro man emperor Constantine convened the Council of Nicaea to address—among other things—the growing issue of God’s alleged “trinity in unity.” What emerged from the heated contentions of churchmen, philosophers, and ecclesiastical dignitaries came to be known (after another 125 years and three more major councils), as the Nicene Creed, with later reformulations such as the Athanasian Creed. These various evolutions and iterations of creeds—and others to come over the centuries—declared the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost to be abstract, absolute, transcendent, imminent, consubstantial, coeternal, and unknowable, without body, parts, or passions and dwelling outside space and time. In such creeds all three members are separate persons, but they are a single being, the oft-noted “mystery of the trinity.” They are three distinct persons, yet not three Gods but one. All three persons are incomprehensible, yet it is one God who is incomprehensible.

Look through his “Awe Schucks” act and see him for what he really is. Mike Huckabee is a wolf in sheep’s clothing that uses the religion card to push his own agenda.
I want people to realize all of the negative ads that have been put out against Romney by not only McCain but Huckabee as well, and what Romney’s response has been. Huckabee has an average of using the word “dishonest” in interviews against Romney 2 to 3 times per interview. While McCain calls Romney a “Phony”! After these personal attacks occur what has been Romney’s response each time? ( Something time and time again such as the following ) “I feel sorry that they are resorting to personal attacks, they are both good men, but we just differ in political opinions.” Who then, I ask, is the better man of the three? Who is being more “Christian” I wonder, to turn the other cheek rather than to retaliate with personal attacks? I believe Mitt Romney is a great man, and would make a great President, and that he shows it by staying true to his beliefs, no matter how popular or unpopular the media makes it out to be, and being enough of a man to campaign fairly and honestly. Romney should win this campaign, and even if he doesn’t, it will be because he is the better man.
