Huckabee Wins over Romney

West Des Moines, IA

Governor Mike Huckabee won the Republican Iowa caucuses this evening beating Governor Mitt Romney. Fox News Channel called the win in less than an hour. At Romney headquarters at the Sheraton in West Des Moines the Romney staff seemed tense, but supporters chanted, “Mitt!, Mitt!, Mitt!” while waiting for Romney to come out and address his supporters.

Earlier this evening Romney greeted caucus goers at two sites in Waukee and West Des Moines. The presidential hopeful seemed nervous and told the press:

“It’s the first inning in a fifty-inning ball game. So you know you want to get on base in the first inning, but we’re planning on doing well.”

He addressed a crowd at a caucus site in West Des Moines giving him his last sell before they began caucusing:

“I hope Iowa makes a really powerful choice. I think if you select me I think I will go on to be the nominee. If you don’t well I’ll still go on to be the nominee or at least I hope so.”

About 200 supporters are waiting for Romney to come out and speak which we expect to happen in the next few minutes.

A Vote for Huckabee is a vote for Obama/Clinton. Huckabee cannot win the Presidency. You Evangelicals keep voting for him but please no crying when Hilary is in the Oval Office. He even allienates his fellow Republicans (Mormons). Maybe one day they’ll wisen up and join the Dems. Then again … Iowa GOP … you voted Democrat tonight. Congrats.

Romney will still go on and win! Huckabee is a one time winner. I am so tired of all the attacks on Romney. He never ever makes personal attacks on anyone. Huckabee and McCain are so rude and they say really personal things. Romney contrasts issues but does not attacks!

These so called evangelical christians amaze me. They have voted against Romney not necessarily for Huckabee. They know he can’t win the nomination nor beat the dems. Who cares if he’s a likeable guy. WHAT CAN HE DO>>>>WHAT HAS HE DONE>>>>YOU KNOW…..SUBSTANCE. He still hasn’t “set the record straight” concerning the issues brought up in the CONTRAST ADDS. If Huckabee thinks he’s being attacked ….does the shoe fit??? The truth hurts. Compare his resume to Mitt’s. Any objective observer would rather have the economic fate of the country in Mitt’s hands. He’s spoken strongly on the war and jihadism. He covers all the bases, and has a record of accomplishment. I ask what is his motivation for running. He’s wealthy….not money. Don’t think it’s ego….nope. Maybe because he wants to make America better for his kids and grandkids just like he says. Oh but he’s dishonest …I forgot. He could do whatever he wants but he is subjecting himself to the whole process and WHY? We trust him to showcase the U.S. to the world during the Olympics but no he’s not good enough for the Presidency. NO ONE DENIES HIS COMPETENCE. But I guess he can’t pick a guitar and say those little one liners. What about substance!!! Look at his family. I submit that being a successful father is harder than doing well at anything else. One other thing. If Huckabee gets the nomination he’ll be relying on some mormons to protect him as secret service agents. Didn’t know that did you. Funny how people like the fruits (integrity) of the mormon people on the whole but hate that darn tree (the church).

Something here seems wrong on many levels. I am not sure that I can put it into words but something dishonest seems afoot in Mike Huckabee’s camp. He has made this campaign about religion. It is not nor should it be.
No one else has tried to bring religion into the campaign. Even Mitt Romney tried to explain that religion has nothing to do with electing a president. Our country has had presidents of many faiths. The ads and supposed “questions” presented by Mike Huckabee about Mr. Romney’s faith has been offensive to me as a citizen of the United States of America.
I think it exposes that bigotry is alive and well in our country. I am so sad. I thought we were above it.

Huckabee makes my skin crawl. Evangelicals just dropped quite a few respect knotches in my book.

Sorry to see Mitt didn’t win Iowa. 2nd place is still solid this early in the race. Mitt can lead. He is the “Turnaround” king. Washington needs a leader not a bass guitarist, who raises taxes, lets criminals and murderers off, is soft on illegal immigration, and spews half-truths about his opponents’ record while saying he is staying positive, and complaining he is being “attacked” because Romney ran adds comparing their records.

Myth #1
“Mitt is a flip-flopper.”
Mitt has changed his public stance on 1 issue–Abortion. Privately he has always been pro-life. When he ran for the Senate in 94 and then later for Governor in Mass. he ran for the purpose of fixing the things that he was good at fixing. Abortion wasn’t his issue. He was going to leave it alone. He is not a life-long politician. He admits he was unclear on what the role of government should be on this very, very sensitive issue. Then as governor he faced bills such as “embryo farming”, etc. He came down on the side of life every time as governor. Now he has become somewhat of a crusader whom I believe will work hard to protect unborn children in America. Everyone else will talk about it, but I beleive a President Romney could actually have a significant impact on overturning Roe V. Wade. So, don’t be fooled by the YouTube soundbites Mitt’s opponents use in their media ads. It is dangerous to base your vote on soundbites taken out of context.

Myth #2
“I can’t vote for a Mormon”
Romney is a man of faith. The Bible says, “. . .by their fruits ye shall know them.” Romney seems to have a great marriage and adult children who love and respect him and are all working hard to support their father’s candidacy. He gave a great speech on how his faith would inform his presidency. You can see it on mittromney.com. He gave it at the Bush library recently. It is a remarkable speech whether you like Romney or not.

Regarding some of the specifics of Mormonism: First of all you need to understand that the most sinister kind of lie is a “half-truth.” You know one of those lies that sounds so true and so persuasive because it’s packed with SOME truth? The Mormon Church, was organized in 1830. The name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “Mormon” church is a nickname. Some of the Church’s teachings were different from what was commonly accepted and taught by the average Christian church at that time. All kinds of misinformation and misunderstanding, some partial lies, and some all-out malicious lies have been passed down from one generation to the next since 1830. Many of these lies have been published and re-published so much that many in the Christian world now just take them to be fact. I think if you are a serious person considering voting for Romney but you are somewhat hung up on his religion, you ought to look into it. Be very careful about your sources. There are some really bad websites out there spreading plenty of misinformation. Some of the sites clearly are combative and malicious while others are more discrete and respectful but spreading the same bad info. and old lies. If you really want to know about something, why not go to the source? For starters, the Mormon church has an informative site, mormon.org.

I read a number of comments to this news article that say a lot of negative, ignorant things about the mormon faith. And the authors claim to know what they are talking about. They are full of it.

I’m 34 years old. I’ve been married to one wife for almost twelve years. We have 5 children. I joined the Mormon church when I was a senior in highschool. I have since served a two-year full-time mission for the church and have also served in many different teaching and leadership positions in local congregations where I have lived. And, I read a lot. I don’t know everything, but I have studied the faith indepth. I beleive in Jesus Christ with all of my heart. I live the commandments and the principles of the Gosel of Jesus Christ better than I ever did when I used to go to other churches. My mormon faith has been very good for my marriage and my family. We certainly aren’t perfect, but we are a very happy, law abiding, patriotic, good neighbor-type family.

Here are some TRUE facts about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
*First, Members are often referred to as “Mormons,” “Latter-day Saints,” or “LDS.” The term “Saint” means “member.”
*Second, the Church was restored in 1830 in upstate New York with Joseph Smith as its first prophet and president. Today it is headquartered in Salt Lake City, with President Godon B. Hinckley as the present prophet.
*Third, there are now over 13 million members in 176 countries and territories. About 6 million of these are in the U.S., making it the fourth largest Christian denomination in America. The Church is one of the fastest growing Christian faiths in the world, a new chapel building is completed every working day. Members pay a tithe, which is 10% of their income, making this and other programs possible.
*Fourth, local congregations are led by volunteer, unpaid members. Both men and women serve in assigned leadership positions.
*Mormons are well represented in politics and government. 16 members of Congress–in both parties. Members also serve in high and trusted positions throughout the world in business, medicine, law, education, media, sports, and entertainment. (So, people who say that Mormons are weird, or stupid, or ignorant, or cultish, or whatever are wrong and must have had some kind of misunderstanding along the way.)
*Practicing Mormons are committed Christians with strong traditional values.
*Mormons believe in the eternity of the soul, that God is the Father of our spirits, and that we can return to Him after death.
*We believe that Jesus Christ is our personal Savior, and we try to model our lives after Him and His teachings. We commemerate Christ’s atoning sacrifice in our Sunday worship services, similar to taking communion in other churches. We accept as fellow Christians all who believe Jesus Christ to be the Son of God and the Savior of all mankind. Many Christians do not understand that we have much common ground with them. Joseph Smith taught that Jesus Christ is the core of our belief, and everything else is an appendage to it.
*We believe the orginal church that Jesus established was lost and has been restored again in our day. The priesthood, authority given to man to act in the name of God, with apostles and a prophet to lead us, has been restored as have all necessary ordinances of salvation.
*We believe in and we use the Holy Bible, both the Old and New Testaments.
*And we believe in the Book of Mormon and other books of scripture which support and authenticate the Bible and testify of the ministry and divinity of Christ and of God’s ongoing revelation to man. The Book of Mormon is “Another Testament of Jesus Christ.”
*We have a very family-centered theology and lifestyle.
*We have a deep commitment to marriage (defined as a union between one man and one woman). Polygamy, a limited practice in the early pioneer days of the Church, was discontinued in 1890–117 years ago.
*Families and individuals, whether members of our faith or not, can attend Sunday services in our chapels. In Church we worship together and instruct each other from the scriptures.
*Latter-day Saint families are encouraged to hold “family home evenings” weekly, usually on Monday nights. This provides a regular and predictable time for parents to teach values to their children and to have fun together. (Even if you aren’t Mormon, I invite you to adopt this practice with your own family.)
*The Church has auxiliary programs for women, youth, and children as a support to the family. These programs provide such things as religious instruction, opportunities for Christian service, sports, drama, music, and Scouting.
*There is also much focus on extended family, geneology, and personal family history, providing young and old with a stronger sense of roots, identity, and belonging. The highest and most sacred ordinances of our faith relate to our families, both living and dead, and some of these ordinances take place in our temples.
*Studies show that practicing Mormons are healthier and live longer than the national average. In 1833 the Lord revealed to Joseph Smith the Word of Wisdom, which is the way to live in order to enjoy a long and healthy life.
*Those who are married in and attend the temple regularly have a divorce rate far below the national and world average. (About 6% per an LA Times article published awhile ago. Compared to the 50-60% divorce rate nationally)
*Mormons acheive an educational level that is higher than the national average.
*Over 70,000 members volunteer at their own expense to serve for 18 - 24 months in humanitarian efforts, Church service assignments, and full-time missionary service throughout the world.
*Mormons place strong emphasis on self-reliance and a solid work ethic. The Church encourages active involvement in our communities and providing service to others. The Church continues to donate substantial money, goods, and services to humanitarian causes around the globe, including untold hours of labor donated by members to assist in disaster cleanup and relief.

I hope something I’ve written will be helpful to people who are taking a serious look at Romney. He would be a fantastic president.

(Most of the bullet points under “TRUE facts about the Church” are from M. Russell Ballard’s article, “Faith, Family, Facts, and Fruits.”)
