Romney Campaign Launches Attack Ad Against Huckabee

Le Mars, IA—

The Romney campaign has launched their second attack ad of the day, but this one goes after Governor Mike Huckabee in Iowa. The ad, “Ready,” slams the Iowa frontrunner on a variety of issues: government spending, illegal immigration, and pardons and commutations. The commercial looks almost identical to the last negative ad against Huckabee. Like all previous ads that the Romney campaign calls “contrast” ads it starts with a compliment and then hits hard:

“Two good men. But who is ready to make tough decisions? Mike Huckabee? Soft on government spending. He grew a $6 billion government into a $16 billion government. Backed in-state tuition benefits for illegals, and granted 1,033 pardons and commutations, including 12 murderers.”

The commercial also quotes Secretary of State Rice commenting on Huckabee:

“His foreign policy? ‘Ludicrous,’ says Condoleezza Rice.

Mike Huckabee responded to the ad saying, “If you’re dishonest in getting the job, then you’ll be dishonest in carrying the job. I think that’s what really is at risk here.”

Romney continues his “Strong America” bus tour around Iowa today. He has had three stops and has not mentioned any of his Republican rivals yet including Mike Huckabee.

There he goes again. Since Arkansas is among the last in the nation in most programs, they probably needed a billion dollars a year for Gov. Huckabee’s 10 years in office. It may be that the economy grew to increase revenues, i.e. tax cuts produce growth!?!

How does Massachusetts fair? During Gov. Romney’s one term (4 years), government spending increased from $38 billion/year to over $44 billion/year. The Commonwealth also increased the tax burden to over $47 billion/year (+$9 billion). NOTE: The Commonwealth allows for deficit spending whereas Arkansas mandates a balanced annual budget. So if Gov. Romney controls government spending to the rate of +$1.5 billion per year and the other guy less, who is the big spender?

The more these guys reveal how much of a liberal they really are, the more I like Fred Thompson, the one who clearly has the most conservative voting record. The fact that he is not only an attorney, but also the guy who “shepherded” through the Senate Judiciary Committee a very conservative nominee for the Supreme Court makes me think he’ll do the same as President.

Thompson doesn’t slobber all over the voters in an effort to ingratiate himself like Huckabee and Romney, but I think his record speak for itself.

Check the facts. After looking at the CAFR for the State of Arkansas for the ten years ending in 2005, the state spending grew from $6 billion to $10 billion. The lions share was in Health and Human Services ($2.3 to $4.9 billion) and Education ($1.7 to $2.9 billion) to the tune of $3.8 billion. Imagine spending more on health care and education in the last ten years?

Where does Gov. Romney get his figures? Statistics can lie but accountants shouldn’t.

Judicial Watch just released it’s 2007 list of most corrupt politicians. On it were both Giuliani and Huckabee!

The Huckster is at it again calling Romney dishonest and basically a liar. Since when is drawing attention to Hucks record being dishonest.. Notice that he cannot refute the statements in Romneys add? All he does is cry foul and personally attack and accuse Romney of being dishonest… People need to get past the bias that Huckabee has been so carefully cultivating against Romney, AND REALLY LISTEN to his ideas and how he would handle the tough decisions that will inevitably need to be made in a world that seems to be more volitile and in disarray with each passing day… The democrats seem to believe that all our troubles will be over when we pull every last soldier out of harms way and bring them home, and leave the Iraqis to protect themselves against radical Islam, of which is like a cancer that is spreading around the world… They will not rest until they have destroyed all democracies around the world and have in place their own twisted ideology… We need someone like Mitt Romney who has shown he knows how to make decisions based on facts and what is best for all americans, not just what is politically advantageous for personal power, in one party or another..

Why didn’t you state that Romney is touring western Iowa? Rock Rapids to Council Bluffs. That is more important than what Huckabee says about the ad.

I do not know where some of you are making up…..Oops I mean getting your info but according to Cato Mitts number are FACT. Cato Report card list Romney as a High “C” on fiscal issues. Huckabee got a “F”. Huckabee was sixth from the bottom on all Gov. Romney was tenth from the top on all Gov.

Google Cato Report Card.

People wake up- stating the facts that many voters do not have access or time to look up is not negative or mud. If it was untrue Huckabee would be addressing the facts and showing proof to discredit Romney. But Huckabee is not addressing Romneys Facts because he cant. The truth hurts and Huck is running from it. So, stop buying his words or pro huckabee sites. Go to a neutral site like Cato or the National Review and get just the facts.

Thank you Ashley for mentioning the Cato Institutes report. They cite in their Appendix D their reasons behind both grades. Gov. Huckabee gets the axe for raising sales taxes to balance the budget and cover a court mandated education increase.

Gov. Romney gets the axe for “$500 million increase in various fees”, “$140 [million] in business tax hikes”, and “$170 million more in business tax hikes.” They close their analysis with “If you consider the massive costs to taxpayers that his universal health care plan will inflict once he’s left office, Romney’s tenure is clearly not a triumph of small-government activism.”

His boost over the other Governor (C vs. D overall) comes from the only positive listed as “he wanted to cut the top income tax rate from 5.3 to 5 percent.” But then that’s his tax bracket.

Cato slams most Republicans for their failure to cut big government. Slowing the increase in spending is not the same as actually cutting government programs.

A more informative website is http://www.factcheck.org. They keep tabs on the accuracy of “facts” from the candidates ads. Check it out.

Conservative voters need to realize that all of this GOP posturing doesn’t really matter.

The bottom line is Mitt Romney is the only candidate who stands a chance of winning against a Hillary Obama (pres/vp) ticket. Don’t waste your primary vote on someone who has no chance of winning.

Evangelicals:
what good will Huckabee do for your faith when he is deciding what streets to re pave in Little Rock as governor in 2009?

War heroes:
What good will McCain do for your legacy when he is making global warming documentaries in 2009?

People who watched 9/11 from a couch in Tulsa:
What good will Guiliani do for your rural security when he is teaching at NYU in 2009?

***IMPORTANT: A primary vote for Huckabee, Guiliani, or McCain is a November vote for Hillary and Obama. Period.

Republicans need to vote ROMNEY or suck it up until 2016.
