Yesterday’s Spin Room Hangover:Alan Keyes vs Reporters

Stuck  @ the Cincinnati Airport -

OK….

I was supposed to publish this WAY WAY before my colleagues, the Dem Embeds, started Live-Blogging the debate today, but due to weather delays, gettin’ stuck in Cinci, and almost making it to New Hampshire from Des Moines ( the plane turned around after an hour in midair!) I can finally finally publish. It has to be made public: Alan Keyes ( where did he come from yesterday?) vs the press corps in the spin room @ YESTERDAY’S debate.

MUST SEE VIDEO BELOW !!! Des Moines, Iowa- Let me set the scene: post-debate Spin Room, Alan Keyes, GOP presidential candidate takes part in his first national debate, with only 3 weeks to go until the Iowa Caucus. Apparently, to the bewilderment of even his competitors on stage was allowed to be included in this Des Moines Register/PBS Debate because he met the debate criteria, which in part, included having paid Iowa staff.According to a report prior to the debate , Keyes only has one paid staffer in Iowa…and that’s pretty much it.

The largest media horde in the Spin Room was the one surrounding Keyes. We, reporters in the room wanted to know about a few things: how many paid  Iowa staffers did Keyes actually have? And more importantly, did a Keyes candidacy have any merit with such a late entrance, almost no campaigning in the Hawkeye state, nor organization to speak of? So we asked.

One reporter asked him if the debate organizers” had been more than generous  to invite you especially because you haven’t campaigned here?” A pretty sensible, and valid question.

But not for Keyes: ” Is that a racial remark?!”

Um wha’?!! ..was pretty much the collective, incredulous reaction from the press. Here are some highlights from the sparring with Keyes, and the media from the Spin Room yesterday.  Gotta Love it.

I like Alan Keyes, I wll vote for him if he gets nominated, I’ve felt that way in the last two elections. However, The media does not like people who are truly conservative and stick to those conservative values. Alan Keyes message for this country has not changed since he began running for office. He is some one who will state is position and live up to it.

It is deplorable the way the media treats Alan Keyes. He a passionate, sincere, and dedicated defender of our Constitution. However, the media likes to, as evidenced by this video, to take jabs at him instead of listening and reporting on his positions.

Not once in the video was he asked about his position on any of the issues. I wonder why? Is it because the media really doesn’t want to know?

The process for electing our leaders is in serious peril, because we the American people have turned our rights over to those who want to make it entertainment instead of substance. Ambassador Keyes has my vote and 100% support, along with thousands of other like minded citizens.

Ambassador Keyes is by far the most well spoken candidate in the 2008 Presidential Race. He is the most interesting candidate to listen to, if you get a chance to listen. Unfortunately, our current system of electing a president doesn’t allow for intelligent, think-on-your-feet type of responses to debate and questions. An African-American Republican candidate will not get a fair representation amongst the American news media. We will suffer as a society by the manner in which we choose our president. We will get what we deserve.

I have followed Mr Keyes for a number of years and would support him as a candidate for in the Presidential Race of 2008. Sorry to say the News media does seem to have a clue what this man is about.

Comment by Rob

It was interesting to me that the writer who “… set the scene:” considered the inclusion of Ambassador Keyes in the debate as having been “… more than generous…” on the part of the debate organizers. This is a sensible and valid question? It would be valid for a candidate asked that question to inquire if the question came from a racial basis.

Is it true that our presidential candidates can meet the criteria for running for President of the United States and could be denied that right by a news media group like PBS (Public Broadcasting) for no disqualifying reason? Before I caught myself saying, “Of course not!”, I re-read the part where the news media folks questioned his merit based on his lack of campaigning within their venue they were surprised he had accessed.

It is discouraging to me that a Presidential Candidate can run for office in a manner that shows an understanding of our Constitution, Founding Fathers, and American ideals / way of life and the collective Press Corps response is “Um wha’?!! ..”

Ambassador Keyes is a candidate that responds to the issues we are all facing from a position of Principle that he is not shy about defining or defending. I don’t agree with all the positions he has taken, but because we come from the same principles with our solutions I would at least be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and talk to him about my differences with him. He has my vote in the coming election whether or not he gets the nomination because he is the best person for the job at hand.

I have listened to Keyes on and off for many years and believe he would make a great candidate for president of the US. He has the correct perseption of the way the political process should run. The press should not dictate decorum, policy and money sure should not have any berring on a candidates qualifications for the job he/she is seeking.
I get infuriated lsitening to the questions the reporters ask and even more so by some of the answers the candidates give. The general public is smart enough to understand plain English so quit with the double speak. Say what you mean, then, do what you say. Our country is in a down ward spiral and it willl take a real honest leader to pull us out.
Keep using your voice for the muted American citizen who has no voice.
Only when the Popular vote is used and the Electoral College is gone will we have some small voice.

Alan Keyes totally keeps his cool when under pressure, neither is he SWAYED by pressure to
veer off his course, that alone is an excellent quality! I have voted for him the last time he ran, and I will vote for him again, and if I have to do it in the write-in line!
If the GOP thinks some of us will vote Republican in order to keep the democrtas from the White House, they are wrong. I will not vote as if this was a horse race; I will vote FOR the man I believe to be capable and qualified to sit in the White House, and that man is Alan Keyes.
I have not understood the root of the media’s hatred/contempt of Alan Keyes, till I heard him tell the media, “YOU don’t get to define the principle of politics in this country; you only THINK you do. The PEOPLE define it.”

Paul/Keyes ‘08

Comment by Kris

Wiegand, Paul/Keyes ‘08? You’ve go to be kidding. You’ve got to be kidding! Why don’t you just put together your most conservative Republican with your most liberal Democrat. I’ll bet you mix pepper with sugar in your oatmeal too don’t you.

Comment by sperlaine

I didn’t know he was running. Did you? Did any of the other candidates? Any reference to race is just a smokescreen, to allow him to just keep saying inflammatory statements. If no one paid any attention to him, he probably would have just gone home. Enough said.

I think Ambassador Keyes is our guy for this republic. “SELF-GOVERNMENT” Electing a person who has a standard and will not be swayed! As far as foreign policy experience He is the ONLY one with qualifications. He stands FOR the PEOPLE, not for the politicians!! Gooo Ambassador Keyes and thank you for standing on integrity something the people of this country sorely lack in the leadership in all levels of government as they sell out to power and money.

Comment by Pajo

Alan Keyes handles these clowns so well, I can’t help thinking of some old song lyrics from
years ago…”Face piles and piles of trails with smiles, It riles them to believe that you perceive
the web they weave”. Alan Keyes is who he is, has been for years, these reporters, well, thay’ll
be selling insurance in a couple of years.

Comment by Mark

Stupid reporters! Now think about it, how often do you see candidates get asked questions having to do with defeat?
‘Hey Kucinich, you don’t get any votes, why don’t you quit?’
‘Hey McCain, you lost in Iowa, how can you stay positive?’
‘Hey Huckabee, you lost in New Hampshire, how can you stay positive?’

Have you EVER heard a candidate NOT try to put any desperate positive spin on their situation?? Yet they come back once again to Keyes with questions that basically ridicule his chances and therefore his efforts. What did they expect him to say?

I don’t care what anyone thinks about Keyes’ realistic chances. I celebrate every chance that he (rarely) gets to get his message out to the people. I recommend reading some of his speeches!

Comment by Lanny DeGood

Alan Keyes, too Moral, too conservative, actually too right to get the nomination. How long till the liberal attitudes in this country cause its demise? Even the republican party has left the true conservative views for more middle of the road sin attitudes. Go Alan Keyes!

Comment by ALVIN

I AGREE. I VOTED FOR ALAN WHEN HE RAN HERE IN IL. HE HAD COURAGE TO TRY IN THIS HARD CORE BLUE STATE. SO GO MIKE HUCKLEBEE GO

Comment by Ed

How is that NOT a racial remark? Why else would the debate coordinators be generous?

Lowlife reporters. . .

Comment by KeyesIsAMoron

Alan Keyes is hilarious, LOL, he would NEVER be our president.

Comment by Cheryl

Alan Keyes is the only truly conservative presidential candidate. He is intelligent, well spoken and is smart enough to surround himself with a good cabinet if elected. I will vote for him. I wish more people would stop saying they won’t vote for him because he won’t win. Well, if we all had that attitude many candidates would never have made it. SUPPORT KEYES for president!!!!!

Comment by Bill

I have voted for Keyes every time he has been on my balot and I plan to continue. Especially this time, since it is the only Conservative protest vote still possible. If not for him we would have to write in Tancredo or something…

Comment by Ruth I. Thomas

Allen Keyes is still “my man.” He is so far above the rat race of candidates running for president, that those who losely follow politics can’t even comprehend what he is. He is honestl He is very intelligent. He is witty. He is articulate. He is a good man. I do not use the word “good” lightly. I mean “GOOD” as in NOT evil or manipulative or sly or untruthful or weak. I could go on and on. I watched him on a talk show where the host was obviously trying to “catch” him with (she thought) tough questions and he made mincemeat of her, without flinching, in a quick, simple, straight-forward answers, without an ounce of malice or arrogance. Of all the atributes above mentioned, you could in good conscience say that not one of them applies to the current roster of candidates!! He would make a GREAT president. His problem? He’s a black REPUBLICAN.

Comment by Alonnie Ropp

Bravo to Alan Keyes for informing elements of the press that they are not in control of the political process. After a another Tuesday of hearing ‘predicted’ winners based on exit polls and not actual ballots, I continue to be disgruntled with a press that continues to manipulate the voting and non-voting public.

Comment by Marilyn Blum

Why am I now seeing Alan Keyes as a presidential canditate? I have supported him for over a decade, but have never seen any information to help a campaign?

Comment by Steven Tipton

Keep up the Godly work Alan, a lot of us realize man persecutes those that speak honestly & sincerely. Your reward may not be here but both of us know that God will not forget you.

Comment by Floyd W. Whitley

I did not realize that this site existed in Fox’s blog stable.

If Alan Keyes would accept the nomination of the Constitution Party’s national convention in late April this year in Kansas city, he not only has my vote but my active support.

An aside, I find it revealing that here most people post under their own true name, or I assume they do. That shows they take ownership of their words, without fear. Wholly unlike elsewhere on these political blogs.

That alone speaks volumes.

Comment by Zita Bennett

It is a shame the way the media and the GOP has treated Alan Keyes. Americans deserve to know which candidate best represents their views on the issues.

Comment by John Bangert

Yes, I love Alan Keys too, but then I’m just another typical white guy.

Comment by John Bangert

excuse the misspelling of last name on my comment above. I know it is Keyes and not Keys. ((

Comment by Butch

Alan Keys is the better qualified of the three that are currently running. He is very honest and sincere. This is the only black canidate that is sincere in their reason for wanting the presidency. Al;l others are only interested in the black community, not America in it’s entirety. Alan is very knowledgeable about foriegn policy as weel as domestic. It is too bad that that he has never been givwen a fair chance by the media that now controls our national elections. Too bad the black community would never endorse him. I guess he didn’t promise them enough.

Comment by Don Rhodes

I watched your hachet attempt on Mr Keyes. You (so called) reporters were trying to be ruthless, but turned out to be so numb-skulled and retarded. You would not let him answer any of your childish remarks, and you could not or would not answer his.
You fruit-cakes have rode the media down to the gutter. What goes around, will come back and bite you in you cheesey Ass. The sooner the better..

Comment by tony wise

this man has my vote .

Comment by Bill McKenzIe

Alan Keyes should be the Republican nominee, since only a Republican or DemocRAT will ever be elected. Alan is far and away the best man running.
