Romney: Huckabee is “Too Liberal”
Muscatine, IA
Governor Romney was bombarded by questions about one topic at today’s press availability, Mike Huckabee. Romney said Huckabee was “too liberal” and that he now sees himself as the underdog.
Romney acknowledged that the former Arkansas governor has surged and he’s now the underdog that needs to get back on top, “In this race here? Absolutely. In New Hampshire I’m in a stronger position there. Depends on the state, but at least in this state right here based on what we are seeing yeah he’s the guy in front. “
The former Massachusetts governor also said Huckabee is too liberal on the issues and that voters will start to recognize that:
“So I think over the coming days as people take a closer look at Governor Huckabee’s record, they’ll say, ‘Good guy.’ He’s right on
abortion—he opposes abortion as I do. He’s right on same sex marriage—he opposes that as I do. But on matters related to
immigration, crime and spending and taxing, he’s too liberal.”
During both events today he came at rivals Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee, but made sure to call them both ”friends” before he went after their records on immigration and government spending. He attacked Huckabee on his record of pardons while Governor of Arkansas and was able to contrast his own record at the same time:
“I frankly think that the more people come to know Mike Huckabee the more they realize they don’t know about Mike Huckabee and when they look at his position on illegal immigration, they’ll find that unacceptable. I think as people look at the pardons and
commutations—over a thousand pardons and commutations—12 murderers being pardoned, I think the people of Iowa will say that’s unacceptable. I’ll contrast that with my own experience. . .The number of pardons and commutations I gave was zero.”
Access to Governor Romney is the best of the top tier candidates with at least one media availability a day. As a member of the traveling press I am able to ask the presidential hopeful whatever I want on a daily basis. But, as Huckabee continues to surge and more media trails both Romney and Huckabee that access will be restricted. The media suffers, but the campaign is able to control their message to a greater degree. The embedded press is hoping it doesn’t happen too soon!

Too liberal?
Mike Huckabee balanced the budget in Arkansas every year he was Governor and left it with an $800 million surplus, improved roads, and better education and health insurance for kids. And Governor Huckabee has NEVER changed his position on abortion in order to get elected….Mitt Romney has. He “jettisoned his own beliefs” to gain Massachusetts, if you will. And he did so on an issue that tallies its results in 45 million unborn babies terminated since Roe v. Wade. A number equal to 15,000 occurrances of the 911 attacks.
So tagging Governor Huckabee as a liberal for decisions he made out of a good heart and a desire to help people after abandoning his Pro-Life views to please the liberal-leaning Massachusetts electorate is a shameful case of hypocrisy on Mitt Romney’s part.
My vote is for Mike Huckabee and that will not change.

To those that say Mitt Romney flip floped on abortion haven’t looked at his record as governor. He vetoed pro-abortion initatatives and did everything in his power to block same sex marraige. He lowered taxes and helped the state of Massachusetts out of massive deficits. Mitt Romney’s actions speak much louder than a few words he spoke in a debate one time almost 12 years ago. That’s a lot more than you can say about many of the candidates out there including Huckabee who made a no new taxes pledge and went back on it as governor. Personally I’d rather vote for someone who has a history of following conservative principles instead of just saying they will. I trust that Mitt Romney will veto any pro-abortion bill that comes his way, lower taxes, seek reduced spending, put in judges who will overturn Roe v. Wade and put the decision back in the hands of elected legislatures, and he will be strong on defense (including border security). He has my vote that’s for sure.
Mitt Romney is correct about Huckabee. He is a good guy, but he is soft when it comes to a huge issue of crime and his position on illegal immigration. I pray that as Iowa learns more about Huckabee they will see that while he may do alright in Iowa he will not be able to win the presidency. Democrats would love nothing more than to have Huckabee as our nomination. They realize that is good old boy personality is too much like Bush. Romney on the other hand is the only one that stands a chance in 2008! Just listen to his “Faith in America” speech and you will see the next future President. This is why I know that he will win in IA, NH, MI! America here comes the next President of the United States of America! For this, Romney has my vote!
I was really concerned about the new (to me) revelations about Huckabee that he allowed himself and his wife to be lavished with gifts from the electorate while in office, and that his kid butchered a dog at scout camp. Set aside the bizarre statements about AIDS patients, the commutation of prison sentences, the utter lack of discernable experience or training in anything but the Bible. The more I learn, the less I like this guy.
I think the Dems will have a field day with him, and a big part of the reason for his surge is that he hasn’t had the Dem scrutiny of the front-runners. According to the Drudge report of 12/12, the Dems are purposely keeping hands off of Huckabee and see him as an “easy kill” if he’s the Republican candidate.
Too Liberal???? Mike Huckabee is the most conservative candidate out there right now. Huckabee DID NOT let any murderer go free…..that wasn’t his job. If you wanna get ticked off at someody, ge ticked of at the parole board. PLEASE GET YOUR FACTS CORRECT and stop making assumptions! GO MIKE GO!!!
Romney is by far the best Republican candidate out there. He’s the most conservative and has a much better record than Huckabee does. He also has great business sense which is much more valuable to our country than Huckabee’s theology degree. When did it become important that our President have a theology degree? Huckabee plays up the religon card so often, it’s sickening. It’s sickening that people are won over with it. With Romney, we have a strong candidate against any Democrat candidate, with Huckabee, we’ll be sure to lose the presidency to the Democrats. And that’s what the Democrats are hoping.
Governor Romney is the most viable of all the candidates with stable, demonstrated leadership abilities, sound conservative principles, and presidential stature. His lifelong international experience in business and public service will be indispensable in the global political scene. And I am surprised that no one has ever mentioned that he is bilingual with French as his second language.

Huckabee’s $800 million surplus? A surplus does sometimes follow a string of tax increases. Huckabee’s fiscal record in Arkansas was liberal–no doubt. Liberals generally increase taxes to invest in social programs and infrastructure. While sometimes needed, they should come about as a result of a stimulated economy, not a taxed economy.
So Huckabee’s soft on crime? OK Mitt, how many executions did you oversee in your state? Can you count them on one hand… one finger….oh yeah, it’s 0! So don’t say Huck’s soft on crime when he’s overseen more than a dozen executions. Mit and Huck were my favorites, but Mit has now dropped to the bottom of my list, because of his continuous attacks on other republicans. He now seems like a sleezy candidate. ALSO, why does everyone think that Huck can beat the Dems when he’s leading them head to head in the polls?
Romney is more liberal than Mike Huckabee. We need to delve into his past and his strange aberrations in the Mormon cult which dictates his actions. He is a greater threat than Hilary.
The Huckster’s a joke, a flash in the pan. His meteoric rise was from one place–Ghouliani’s former supporters. They saw Ghouliani with several albatrosses around his neck, and bolted. The Huckster was just what the doctor ordered–pro-life but still as open borders and pro-lawbreaker as Ghouliani. In fact, the ONLY difference between Ghouliani and Huckabee is the abortion issue.
Romney’s number fell when Ghouliani hit him with “sanctuary mansion”. Strange that this didn’t help Ghouliani. Anyway, the race is wide open now. The Huckster, liberal though he is, cannot win many states in the Northeast where the population is highest. He certainly can’t win CA or Illinois in the primary. The Huckster is a Southern phenomenon borne out of evangelical’s desperation for a leader. Fortunately, it is a mostly Southern thing.
Ghouliani is finished, kaput. The only man who can seize the moment and run with it–a fresh new face with a tin of money–is Romney. Even if he loses Iowa and Florida in the primary, he still has PA, all of New England with Ghouliani still taking NY State. VA, Ohio, Michigan and Texas are the battlegground primary states for Romney and the Huckster.
GO MITT ROMNEY. DON’ T HESITATE…GET STRONGER and MORE CONFIDENT……you have the right stuff AND you are not a Washington Insider.
Use your intelligence and analytical skills…….
Mitt Romney would make one of the greatest presidents this country has ever had, if we the people give him a chance. Huckabee is a great minister but would make an awful president. He would really divide our country, running on his religion. Now of all times, we need the right person to pull our country together. Its been so divided ever since Bill Clinton took office. We need a well rounded person in the White House, someone with a family with values, to set an example for the people of our country. GO MITT
The “Meet the Press” interview that Mitt Romney appeared on today was quite revealing, and the long list of nuanced positions or outright flip-flops were not just brought up by Tim Russert…but backed up with print documented or video record from beginning to end. We learned a synonym that Romney used for taxes….fees….to the tune of $500 million during his term as Massachusetts governor. We learned, with video record of a debate during his gubernatorial campaign that he too had less than complimentary things to say about George Bush and Ronald Reagan.
I don’t think Mitt Romney is a bad man….but I believe he made a big mistake in his “contrast” ad on immigration between himself and Mike Huckabee, another area where his comments in the past do not square with his position now, by the way. This only served to dredge up his own changed positions on major issues, which Tim Russert has made into an art form. Democrats will exploit this as easy as it is alleged they’d exploit any issues in Mike Huckabee’s record….and his electability will be no greater, just way more expensive. So his assertion that Mike Huckabee is too liberal looks even more hypocritical in light of the several policy “modifications” Romney has made in just five short years in addition to his abortion flip-flop, which was the deal-breaker anyway.
For me…..I just can’t vote for a man who I have to wonder about when the time comes for him to appoint a Supreme Court justice to a lifetime term. He dropped the ball on this issue once to gain political office and my vote is too precious to cast for him when there is a much more dependable choice in Mike Huckabee. The American economic engine is much, much more than a one-man operation, and personally, I won’t much care about fiscal matters until the killing of the unborn stops anyway.
Mitt Romney understands what this nation is facing. Does Huckabee? I think not, otherwise he would not disrespect its President. Romney is a man of character and is up front about the positions he has changed on over the years. Since when is positive change something that as Americans we frown upon? What shows greater leadership, sticking to an issue that you learn you were incorrect about, or admiting you were wrong and facing the music? Romney clearly isn’t perfect, but as I listened to his “Faith in America” speech last week I saw a man of character that truly wants the best for this great country. Can the same be said about Huckabee? I think Huckabee is way to prideful for my taste. I think it is great that he is a man of faith, but I do not like how he wears it on his sleeve. America in the next several years is going to face a nightmare of issues, and I know that Mitt Romney is in it for the long run, because he understands what the true costs are. Huckabee is not my me, because now we are starting to see his true colors and they look more blue than red to me. Romney my not be perfect, but he has my vote.
I am afraid that CNN and the Democrats want Mr. Huckabee to be the GOP canidate going into the remainder of the year, because they will eat him up. He will divide - not unite the Republican party. We need a canidate that can actually beat Hillary or Obama. Mr. Romney has more to offer than both ot them together. In the debates that will follow, Mitt Romney will look much more like the President that we need. He has the needed qualifications to reign in spending and wants a strong military. He is a devoted family man and understands that only with strong natrual families will we defeat many of the social plauges that are destroying the fabric of America.
I know quite a few Mormons and with few exceptions they are some of the most hard working honest and God fearing people in America. They believe in the freedoms that this United States offers and actually believe that God helped to establish this free nation. Yes we need a good honest man in the White House - one that has had only one wife and yes has made the right decision and changed his mind on abortion. if a man or women change thier minds - that is not a flip flop - a flip flop is when they change thier mind or opinion serveral times in the same speech. (Hillary) Listen carefully to Mr. Romney and you will see the strength and the depth of his intellect and his unwavering love for this country and all it stands for.
